245 From Persia under date 31 July 1740. return from Boucheer had been received, which we guess had been recently shipped off: so too, according to ancient custom, the further stock of this mineral purchased here was not kept under the administrators, but under the supervision of the brokers, for which reason the below-named commissioners separately, reflecting upon and inspecting those galley books with ever-increasing astonishment, at the same time suspected with mistrust that the excessive shortages of up to 28 ½ lb. item 648 ¾, or together up to 1275 ¼ lb. on the copper works per the Bouche and the yacht Binnewijsen delivered ashore here last year, had apparently mostly resulted solely from a fraudulent treatment that had previously taken place upon delivery and re-weighing through a premeditated act of the adjunct warehouse master Crapkon, and consequently produced at that time the undeserved charge against their pay accounts; Wherefore also presently, after prior closer information, Your Honorable and Esteemed Orders have been no less promptly obeyed, as From Persia under date 31 July 1740. — as strictly carried out with respect both to the aforementioned copper, as well as concerning that which in addition of that nature has been retrieved from Crap's own residence—consisting of copper pots, pans, lids, etc.—for greater and full conviction of the committed iniquity, serving therefore still herewith for respectful notification, that 6 found sacks filled with old copper works yielded net on the scales lb. 1012. —. —. taken from his house in addition lb. 88. —. —. together lb. 1100. —. —. to balance the aforementioned 2 bad entries: 175. — ¼. — still short. — added together comes to as above: lb. 1275. ¼. — Herewith then, as we hope, having satisfied a part of the aforementioned commission, one will for the present be obliged to leave it at that, and according to the nature of the matters in question, concerning the house search conducted outside the lodge together with the finding of the suspected spices in due time and after performing the inventory of these goods, likewise not fail to give Your Honors in the same manner a further and such clarification in writing, as was already done orally on the aforementioned day of the meeting and now as the further circumstances From Persia under date 31 July 1740. — will come to require, while in the meantime we make bold to remain with much respect and a deep reverence / Honorable Esteemed Sir and Esteemed Gentlemen / lower / Your Honors' humble servants / was signed / G=l H=k Terre, W=m A=s van Jongstal / in the middle / in my presence / signed / J=n G=r Schemming / in margin / in the presence of me / signed / C=n De Haan Gamron the 8 January 1740. Esteemed Sir and Esteemed Gentlemen, Whereas the business and that which has been performed to date in the commission assigned to us last year, though not entirely in vain, is also, in accordance with what was reported under date of the 8th instant, entirely insufficient, so that by right and reason the search already conducted outside and yet to be conducted inside was no less unavoidable than necessary, in order to achieve, if possible, the most essential part of Your Honors' required objective, and right away quietly free ourselves of the burden annexed thereto, therefore one shall then, in accordance with the obligated promises of the aforementioned date and the contents of what was written and resolved under the ultimate of the past month of December /: namely over and concerning the suspicion raised by the native of alienated, as it were, and secretly carried out cloves :/, now further elucidate to Your Honors, and thereby bring to your honored knowledge, that we at that time first conducted an accurate house search outside the lodge, or rather at the rented dwelling of the dispenser Jacob Carelsz /: where a certain Camaal, one of the Shabandar's servants, together with 4 porters had brought us directly :/ and found in a chest about ½ lb. of cloves, which we then sealed inside, and a little

Took little with them for display, subsequently also for the purpose aforesaid proceeding to the inventory of the suspected spices, and that firstly to the cloves, wherein the Company was said to have been disadvantaged and defrauded; however, recently after the matter was executed and the confrontation held, found this aromatic fruit proper in quantity, but some other such goods to agree with the books in the following manner, namely: Cloves, the remainder at the end of August of the past year was 25474:¼ lb. Whereby it appears the suspected spices turned out reasonably From Persia, dated 31 July 1740. reasonably well, and beyond that there were still found a surplus of 27¼ [lb.] nutmegs and 257.¾ lb. of mace, with everyone attributing the mace surplus to the most plausible reasoning, since the 8 suckels recently sent were charged and shipped to the General Office according to order at the standard weight of 154 lb. net from the remainder left over at the end of August, consisting then of 10 closed and 2 open suckels, of which the former amounted to 1460 lb. gross, or by calculation 1283 net pounds, and the latter 177.¾ lb. net, although this was committed by the warehouse masters (without evil intent, as each of us feels) to set down clearly upon the finding, as was done by their predecessor Mr Clement upon the inspection of the warehouses under date of 4 November 1738; and because from the said surpluses the good handling was evident, it was nevertheless resolved regarding that aromatic fruit to allow the aforementioned underweight of 44.5/8 lb. or 1/40 per cent [illegible], as being not too excessive in 4½ months, and when no further indications might come to From Persia, dated 31 July in the year 1740. come to light, to let the further inventory rest at that; all the more because the current warehouse master, Mr Christoffel de Haan, felt at ease regarding the rest and stood surety for all other remainders; but the manifest fraud with the old copper work will in due time be surrendered to the fiscal for investigation, and the surplus spices will be entered into the books for the benefit of the General Office without monetary amount, and the aforementioned underweight will be written off against the profit and loss account. The event on the 6th of the current month between the aforementioned civilly arrested provisional assistant warehouse master and this Council, which until today has remained pending in the minutes, is now, as having reference to the matters of Crap, granted this place; to wit: how on the said day, being Wednesday, between 12 and 1 o'clock, when His Right Honourable with his accompanying party intended to go to table, report was made by the Junior Merchant Jongstal how, while he was just before walking in the gallery, he was called by the said arrested Crap, and having gone to him, he was told

From Persia under date 31st July 1740: was, sir, while Your Honour is a council member, so I tell Your Honour that you tell the lord commander that I do not understand any private goods to be brought into or out of the warehouses, but that I understand the same must remain sealed? Upon which received insolent report His Honourable Worship ipso facto had a meeting convened, wherein it was jointly approved to ask Crap, through the gentlemen de Haan, Terre, and Jongstal, what he wanted, and what kind of a report he had caused to be made to His Honourable Worship through Mr Jongstal; with an admonition that he should keep quiet and carefully refrain from such insolent reports, or that otherwise another place could be assigned to him, but since he, Crap, then replied that what had been said was done out of despondency, and that he therefore begged for forgiveness, likewise that he would take care that such would no longer happen in the future, and requested grace instead of rigour being used with him, it has therefore remained at that, in the hope that all that has been done in this regard will in due time be crowned with the benign approval of their High Noble, Stern, and Great Worships at Batavia. Thus done, resolved, and decreed in the Honourable Company's office at Gamron, date as in the heading aforesaid (was signed: C. Koenad, Sr. Clement, C. van Berglijck, J. de Haan, A. G. Schemming, G. H. Terre, councillor and provisional secretary, and W. A. van Jongstal. Resolution taken in the Council of Policy at Gamron. Thursday the 28th January Anno 1740, at the stroke of 12 o'clock, all present. Yesterday in the afternoon, a ship was seen drifting near the Island of Ormus with a prince's flag, and which on this morning at the stroke of 10 o'clock (God be praised) dropped its anchor in this roadstead, whereof the ship's officers, coming ashore, reported that the same was the Company's ship Middenrak, which had departed from the capital city of Batavia in company with the ship Steenhoven and the sloop De Valk, also bringing a duplicate missive from their High Excellencies the High Indian Government dated Batavia 19th October 1739, along with such appendices as were specified in the index annexed thereto. Therefore His Honourable Worship had these assembled members summoned, who appeared at the ordinary meeting place, and the prayer having been said, were congratulated by His Honourable Worship on the safe arrival of the aforementioned small vessel and also on such esteemed writings as we now had the honour of receiving through the goodness of their High Excellencies. After which, proceeding to the resumption of the aforementioned writings, we perceived among other things, to our sensible regret, the formidable displeasure that their High Excellencies had conceived over the hiring into service of the provisional assistant Anthonij van der Wal of Malacca at f 10 per month, and therefore positively ordered that we might not grant the aforementioned van der Wal more than 9 as salary etc. Therefore, in compliance with the formidable orders in the case at hand, it is approved and understood to order the salary bookkeeper to charge the current salary account of the aforementioned van der Wal for the excess receipt of f 1 per month from the day he was accepted into service until today, and that he subsequently shall run in the salary books at the wage of 9 per month, therefore demanding back from him his already issued deed of 10 per month and handing him a new one of 9 per month, with the understanding, however, that his bound term of three years shall commence from the day he was accepted into the Honourable Company's service; an extract of this resolution shall also be handed to the salary keeper so that the write-off may be duly effected. Furthermore, His Honourable Worship produced a certain ship's resolution and declaration made by the crew of the ship Middenrak that arrived today, concerning the leaving of their aforesaid mates at the North latitude of 19 to 20 degrees, the same reading verbatim: The Ship's Council of the ship Middenrak assembled. Thursday the 7th January 1740. All present: The Honourable Skipper Pieter Monk Chief Mate Hendrik Koster Second Mate Leendert Vooijs Boatswain Gerrit Goole Provisional Boatswain's Mate Jan Martensz and Gunner Bastiaan Crauw. On the day and date aforesaid in the afternoon at 4 o'clock, the ship's council having assembled, after prayer was said, it was brought into deliberation by the Honourable Skipper Pieter Monk that, whereas they had now inspected the full and half water leagers, which is accompanied by a declaration herein, and they presently had only a good twelve leagers of water left, and secondly they were still 80 miles from the Gulf or Cape Ras al Hadd, where one could sometimes still struggle for a long time due to contrary winds, which Almighty God forbid, what we all together thought and judged thereof in order to provide in time. Whereupon we strictly considered together that if one stayed with the sloop, since the same fell behind us 3 to 4 miles each 24-hour period, and on the other hand that one always had to sail with slack sheets, or otherwise one was in the morning easily 2 miles of water to windward of it, and that one for the most part of the time had to keep our spritsails, spritsail topsails, and further small sails furled if one wanted to stay near it, since the same was poor at sailing and holding the wind.

From Persia under date 31 July 1740. will be completely obtained for half. Tenth And concerning the wheat, that it must consist of a good, sound, pure, and not adulterated sort, and that for the price recently communicated by letter of 15 November of the past year, being m:t 8 or 13: 8:— the maund of 108 lbs.; and in case the contractor should see no chance of acquiring the entire quantity, he is hereby granted authorization to assign half, or 50 lasts, or whatever is deficient, to the ministers at Bassoura, with the same stipulation of price and quality as mentioned hereinbefore, he being required, after performing this, to give us the necessary notice thereof. Furthermore, the Honourable Members were reminded by His Honour of the resolution taken on 29 August of the past year to have local liquor served instead of said beverage until such time as we were provided, through the goodness of the High Noble and Stern Great Honours, with wine that could serve for rations; but as there was currently no good Persian wine near the city and consequently the serving thereof had not yet been possible, and we, through the gracious provision of the highest-mentioned High Nobilities, were provided with reasonably good French beverage, whether it would not therefore be better that we resiled from our previous resolution taken in this regard, and instead of serving the wine brought from the upper lands of Persia, which was projected and sent for rations, before the same might once again turn sour and undrinkable through long storage in casks; which proposal, as being reasonable and not contrary to the orders or interest of our Lords and Masters, was accepted by each of the members; wherefore the purveyor shall be ordered to serve the collective gentlemen from the first of September of the past year up to the end of the first of this month, or indeed the period of 6 months, of the said French beverage, or as far as the same can extend proportionally. From Persia under date 31' July 1740. Thursday the 11th of February 1740. All present. At the beginning of this, the Honorable respected Lord Commander exhibited a certain declaration delivered into His Honor's hands by the officers of the ship Middenrak, which was executed by the officers stationed thereon at the request of the said officers regarding the throwing overboard of about 1600 lb of cadjang and 600 lb of pepper, which had been stored in the gunner's room because there was otherwise no room in the said keel, and which, due to an unexpected leak, became wet and, to prevent calamities, were thrown overboard, reading verbatim: Declaration made and taken on the ship Middenrak the 15th of November 1739, how true it is that we the undersigned, Hendrik Koster first mate, Gerrit Goole boatswain, Jan Martensz boatswain's mate, and Bastiaan Krom gunner, noticed that water came running forward from behind out of the gunner's room to near the galley, whereupon the skipper Pieter Monk had the Honorable Company's goods brought up, both of cadjang and some sacks of pepper, to see where the leak might reveal itself, and found then that at the rearmost port as well as the two on the port side in the gunner's room water was coming in at some places, which according to experience had remained standing among the goods for some time, for the sacks of cadjang that had lain underneath were completely rotten, so that according to estimate around sixteen hundred pounds of pepper which one had to throw overboard together with the cadjang, because keeping it in the ship until that place where we were destined for was impossible, while it cast off such a fearful stench and oppressive heat. All of which aforesaid we the undersigned declare to be the pure truth, and remain prepared to confirm the same with oaths if further requested to do so. He therefore inquired whether anyone on the council had a better concept or opinion regarding this matter, but since everyone agreed with the sentiment of His Honorable Respect, it was therefore approved to let the swearing take place, as was also carried out during the drafting hereof by the attestants into the hands of the Honorable respected Lord Commander, except for the second mate Leendert Vooijs of Amsterdam, who on the 2nd of this month had already gone the way of all flesh. From Persia under date 31 July 1740. matter may be treated thus, as the nature and quality thereof entails, in the hope that all that has been performed herein in the meantime will be crowned with the highly esteemed approval of their High Noble, Severe, and Mighty Worships. Thus done, resolved, and arrested in the Netherlands Office at Gamron on the day, month, and year aforesaid; was signed: C:r Koenad, P:r Clement, C:s de Haan, A: J:sz: van Berg Eijk, J:n G:s Schemming, G:t H:k Terre, Councillor and Principal Secretary, and W:m A:s van Jongstal. Resolution taken in the Council of Policy at Gamron, Saturday the 26th of February 1740. All present. The ship Steenhoven having through God's mercy anchored in this roadstead yesterday afternoon, and the original papers having been brought ashore, His Honorable Worship today had the members of this board convoked; and after they had appeared, His Honor congratulated them on the arrival of the said vessel and the receipt of the honored original writings, which upon opening were found, together with the annexed register, to be all in good order and complete. And whereas we now saw positively that their Well-Noble and High Honorable, our Masters and Lords in the beloved Fatherland, no longer wish to be served with Kirman wool, as much on account of the excessive high price as because of its poor value; therefore, on the grounds of this prohibition, it was deemed by everyone in the Council that the stay in Kirman of the Armenian wool merchant Godja Auwannees is unnecessary and dangerous to the welfare of the Honorable Company in this perilous juncture of time, on account of the daily extortions, etc. It was approved to order Auwannees at the first possible moment to come down hither as quickly as possible for a final accounting, or that in case of remaining there, everything that is extorted from him or which he gives away as gifts, after the receipt of this our order, shall be left strictly for his own account, since the Honorable Company, for many and weighty reasons, has seen fit to interdict the wool trade, and consequently his stay is also unnecessary. And whereas we, on the one hand, considered their good management as well done, and on the other hand their request for the melting down of the said bridles for the making of a proper one, as well as for the purchasing of such stable and other necessities, to be necessary, therefore the first was granted to them Persia under date 31st July 1740. From Persia under date 31st July 1740 at the end of the fasting month of Ramadan or the great annual feast day of the Turks, although it is true that such expenses were previously borne by the chiefs and not by the Honorable Company, for the good reasons given for it the write-off has been permitted to them; with the recommendation, however, that they shall have to carefully guard against harmful novelties or else, if not acted upon thus, it will be left for the account of the giver, and they shall also be ordered to write off the advanced salary to the interpreter Jacob Jan Sahid amounting to 320 mamudis at 136 guilders for the period of 4 months at 34 per month in their books to such an account as is proper, since the highly esteemed orders require, and it has also anciently always been practicable, that each office bears its own burden, and as regards the residents' demand for merchandise, it will be satisfied as promptly and as feasible. These two items are and remain deferred until such time and while the ship's crew at Bassoura have accounted for their withheld cargo, and the findings thereof come to serve. Japan wood Siamese, according to invoice: lb. 40000. Thereof brought ashore: lb. 25000. Still left therein for Bassoura a quantity of: lb. 15000. Total: lb. 40000. Which fragrant bark turned out in good condition, and reached its weight. Black winnowed Bantam pepper according to invoice and bill of lading should be: lb. 147157. Until the whole quantity at Bassoura is discharged, it is suspended, but the 4148 lb. dust and sand shall be thrown into the sea by the fiscal and judicial commissioners, and this short weight of fully 5 9/10 per cent is caused by the syrupy leakage, as also by the bad condition of some canassers, and also in the loading and discharging, weighing, etc., a certain loss is to be assumed. And here ashore unloaded from that vessel: lb. 72150. Upon winnowing found of dust and sand: lb. 4146. Making of pure pepper that is deliverable: lb. 68004. Winnowed as said: lb. 4146. And according to sworn declaration of the ship's officers of what they had to throw overboard: lb. 600. So that there remains in remainder in the vessel for Bassoura: lb. 75000. The 27 lb. short delivered spelter must, according to the buyout price of the 6 lb. at 9 1/2 mamoodis or together to 40 mamoodis, f 18:5:8, be paid by the ship's crew, because that mineral is not subject to spillage; as the said ship's crew will also still have to compensate, with 75 per cent advance, 390 lb. nails or 12 per cent, amounting in money to 238 mamoodis, f 101:13:-, but because that mined material is essentially subject to rust, therefore the other 3 1/5 per cent or lb. 124 is credited to them. The medicines which were found short according to the report annexed hereto shall, in conformity with the highly revered order of Their High Excellencies, be charged to the head office Batavia on the outgoing invoice.
