From Persia under date 31 March 1741. already recommended to the residents the upcoming new harvest, and now that we are informed by Your Right Honorable Worships that the wet sort must be renounced, we shall, as already stated, also give orders regarding this; meanwhile it has come to our grateful and very joyful knowledge that the same had still achieved 71½ and the dry 227 per cent advance, wholeheartedly wishing that it may also turn out reasonably well with the 88000 lb delivered by Steenhoven, and concerning which we have all the more hope because Your Right Honorable Worship has so kindly been pleased to support us to recover the damage that the money causes here, and for which we are most cordially obliged. From Persia, dated 31 March 1741: which is customarily used in illness and, in all likelihood, corresponds with that which the grandees in Hindostan use. This, Right Honorable sirs, is what, to our knowledge, is considered and required here and in Spahan for a tent, provided that the same is manufactured to be transportable and also carried by men and beasts. If, as said, we could be accommodated with such a field tent, it would always be something in reserve upon the arrival of a traveling grandee of the realm or generalissimo that could serve to the great esteem of the Honorable Company, in case all the previous requirers did not keep the same in mind, of which, however, we do not doubt at all. Whereas it has favorably pleased Their High Excellencies to dismiss the Administrator Koenad from this region, and in his place, on the other hand, to appoint the Honorable Senior Merchant and Administrator George Gutchi, in order to receive and take over from the hands of the former the chief management of the Persian Directorate; therefore, His aforementioned Honor takes the extraordinary liberty, with the former, in this present communication, to respectfully assure Your Right Honorables, both at present and in the future, of wishing to exert every possible effort that will be required for carrying out Your Right Honorable's commands, alongside the pleasant cultivation of an amiable correspondence. We are, meanwhile, of the mind that various occurrences of the aforementioned predatory rabble, truly persistent storms, the toil at sea, and the extortions that the rulers have firmly resolved to enforce upon the coolies and other laborers as well as the simple craftspeople, have at present frustrated our plan to dispatch those two small keels today, From Persia, dated 31 March 1741. to dispatch them, so that we find that exercising patience appears to be the only means that may be used, with a noble-minded indulgence, for giving and taking is entrusted to a higher hand. Regarding the tamarind that is still expected, we hope in due course to receive pleasant news, and concerning the returned drugs and naphtha oil, we are very much obliged, as this was handled in such a manner that the Honorable Company has suffered no disadvantage; and concerning the requested asafoetida, we would gladly have given satisfaction at this time, had the price of the same not appeared far too excessive to us, since the 6 lb, instead of 26½ mamudis at 11 guilders, 5 stivers, 4 pence, had risen to 31 to 32 mamudis or 13 guilders, 3 stivers, 8 pence, or even 13 guilders, 12 stivers for the aforementioned weight, of the sort that the Company is accustomed and willing to purchase for trade. However, should we succeed in this hereafter, all possible means shall be employed towards its fulfillment, as well as with regard to the goods still lacking, just as we can now also satisfy—although slightly more than was demanded from Spahan—the request for fresh madder root seed, to the quantity of 16½ lb, with the wish that the same may thrive in time. But regarding the required 10000 lb of madder, the residents at Bassoura having made the purchase after the departure of the ship Middenrak, or their only opportunity, we are thereby rendered unable to accommodate Your Honors therewith at present, which we nevertheless deeply regret. For the courteous distribution concerning the settlement of the two stable grooms and how that was handled, we are very obliged, and likewise for the kind notification concerning the randzaen regarding some soldiers who remained at Batavia, the authorities having also been ordered in that respect to render their account. Concerning the kind sending of the Ceylon cassia saplings, cardamom, ginger, and turmeric: From Persia, dated 31 March 1741. Regarding the kind sending, we are likewise obliged to Your Honors, and shall hereafter provide communication regarding those small goods as to how they have been delivered here and their condition, since ship and souls were practically anew in mortal danger near Ormus due to a horrible storm and took in much water; otherwise, the amounts of the invoice and expense account have been handled according to custom. From Isfahan ministers mentioned in the transmitted extract from their answered demand, meanwhile thanking your Honours kindly not only for the delivery of the 10 chests of rosewater and almonds and raisins also received here with the Binnewijzent; but also for your courtesy in offering some gums, oil, etc., of which nothing is needed at present, and further for the transmitted copy of the advices addressed by your Honours to the High Indian Government at Batavia, as well as for the successive reports concerning the war and the state of affairs in that country, wishing that heaven will once be pleased to cause all those disturbances to cease and that your Honours may thereby enjoy a wished-for rest and peace. Concerning the 24000 lb of cinnamon demanded by your Honours in the previous year, upon the completion and fulfillment of which your Honours still insist, we must to our regret report that the same had already been sent with one of our yachts to Cochin, in order to obtain further transport from there with the ships from Batavia, but destined for your Honours' direction, due to the sailing past of those vessels without touching at Malabar, they were sent back at our request and employed by us to satisfy the petition made by their High Excellencies, for which we would otherwise have been unable, and which we judged to square better with the interest of our lords principals than that this fragrant bark should remain lying in the Cochin warehouses for nearly an entire year awaiting transport, which was still just as uncertain as now, unless their High Excellencies expressly made one of the ships that will make the Persian voyage this year touch at Malabar for its collection; besides which we also could not know whether your Honours' petition for cinnamon had been fulfilled directly from Batavia or not, and therefore we also remained in doubt regarding that matter; nevertheless, if the harvest here succeeds well, we shall endeavor to fulfill in the coming autumn the 16000 lb newly required by your Honours, as well as the 10000 lb of coffee beans most recently demanded, the 9000 lb previously demanded lying already prepared in 36 bales at Cochin, awaiting transport. Furthermore, we still express our friendly gratitude not only for the sharing of Your Honors' copy advices to the mother country and Batavia, but also for the kind provision of the horses mentioned in Your Honors' aforesaid missive, of which the two mares and the foal with the [illegible] arrived in good condition at Tuticorin, and the three stallions shipped in the Steenhooven were brought from Coromandel, where that vessel put into harbor, to Jaffnapatnam. Along which way, through the friendly care of the Nagapattinam ministers, the small box of papers addressed by Your Honors to us has also already arrived, just as the goods to be found in the above-mentioned bottom, intended both for this capital place and Malabar, have already been delivered to the aforesaid Commandement. The latter we shall not fail to provide transport for to Cochin in due course, as has now been done, following the given instruction of Their High Nobilities, by the Galle servants with 9000 lb Ceylon coffee beans on behalf of Your Honors' directorship, which we hope will be found to be of the required quality. Meanwhile, we request Your Honors to send us no more broodmares henceforth, with which the Jaffnapatnam stud farm is currently sufficiently supplied; but instead to send annually on all occasions good breeding and present stallions, by which our friendship and the Company's service will be served. Serving further in response to Your Honors' friendly proposal to put the dates on the market here, that since no noteworthy sale of that fruit is to be hoped for on this island, we are therefore obliged to abandon that idea entirely, and likewise Your Honors' proposal to give the ships that, coming from Persia, must touch at Tuticorin, one thing or another to take along that could be sold there, as we can think of nothing that would be useful for that purpose or desired by the Madurese merchant. Honourable Sir and particular good friends, On 6 June of this year we recently wrote to your Honour, sending our requisition from Persia for the coming year; and thereby communicated the receipt of your Honour's letters of 25 December of the past year, as appears further from the enclosed copy of our said letter. Since then, the Persian goods not yet received at that time have reached us from Ceylon, sent with the ship Binnenvijsend, for which we thank your Honour with this announcement: that the dry dates from that time have been sold with an advance of 227 percent and the wet with 77 1/2 percent. And although 4000 lb of each sort was demanded in the aforesaid requisition, one will nevertheless keep only to the dry in the future, as the wet is not only too poor and inferior a commodity for the trade of the Honourable Company on this coast, but also because it would become unsaleable with annual arrivals, as may be gathered from the decline of the dry dates upon the arrival of the same with the ship Steenhoven, which came on 23 September directly from Persia to this roadstead; which will have to be sold for much less than the former ones, and will require quite some time before the parcel of 88000 lb is sold off. This will not cause us to refrain from demanding them annually as stated, so long as any profit is to be obtained for the Honourable Company, even if it were only, as your Honour indeed says regarding those inferior and other trade goods, to prevent the loss to which the Honourable Company is otherwise subjected in the export of coin species from that directorate. Their High Mightinesses have been pleased to demand, in the Indian requisition from this government, a chintz field tent for the Beglerbegi at Gamron, for which we have been unable to make a contract for lack of a model required for that purpose, both regarding the external form and the design that will need to be observed in the painting work; with which your Honour will please provide us, both by drawings and by descriptions of some details which cannot well be shown to the eye as required by drawing, unless the same is presently not needed because of the probable disgrace of that regent at the court. After discharging that which it contained for this government, Ceylon, and Malabar, the ship Steenhoven continued its voyage from here directly to Batavia on the 8th of this month. The 3 stallion horses sent therewith have been dispatched to Jaffanapatnam with the remaining goods for Ceylon and also those for Malabar, for onward transmission; and since your Honour's further pleasant missive of 11 August last has reached us by that vessel, together with the copies of your Honour's Netherlands and Batavia advices of the very same date and the last of July prior, we express our gratitude both for those received papers and said goods, while we also enclose the copies of our Netherlands and Batavia letters of 27 October, 5 December of the past year, 3 June, 11 July, 9 and 27 September, and 8 October of this year, to which we refer concerning the Company's interests on this coast. And in reply to your Honour's aforesaid missive of 11 August prior, we further state briefly that if the melting of the old copperwork into plates is not quite practicable, we shall then expect the same in their former state, provided that your Honour will please have the bent and crushed scrap copperwork cleaned as thoroughly as possible not only from rust and dirt, but also from a quantity of old nails, pieces of scrap iron, etc., which are often found in the hollows of the dents and bends. The two Persian stable-grooms who were sent here from Ceylon are now sailing to your Honors, and during their stay here up to the current month they have enjoyed 140 guilders, 5 stuivers, which has been charged to Ceylon. Meanwhile we have the honor to inform your Honors that their High Nobilities have been pleased to appoint the undersigned Commander as military commander on this coast. Although their High Nobilities qualified us to unload from the said vessel the rations for such military personnel as were to travel to this Commandment per De Ketel, and who had to remain there on account of the rebellion of the Chinese, yet owing to the numerous occupations and other reasons one was unable to proceed with this, but had to resolve to leave the same therein, for which they will have to be further accounted for by your Honors' authorities. Your Honours shall therefore in the future have to look out to the utmost of your ability, so that in proportion to the expenses, more reasonable advantages may also be encountered which can make the damages forgotten, and in those good expectations those expenditures have also been passed by us. And in reply to Your Honours' two aforementioned letters, we report for your reassurance that all the accompanying enclosures were complete according to the register, and furthermore the returns sent to us via the middle reach, in accordance with the invoice amounting to f128,839:3:8, also turned out well and have been entered into the books in your favour according to custom. On the aforementioned day, namely the 4th instant, the necessary deliberations were held in the council regarding the findings sent thither concerning the delivery made yonder by the cited ships' officers of the arrived merchandise, etc., and at the same time the arguments of Your Honours as well as those of the officers concerning the discovered shortweights were properly weighed. So that Your Honours will be fully informed by an extract from that resolution which is still being prepared, on a closer occasion; therefore in this matter, such can only be done provisionally regarding entries that have received some relief through a debit, or ought to obtain redress, and concerning which, entering into communication on account of Your Honours' transmitted distribution assigned to the head accountant, according to the calculations found concerning this, we can say nothing else than that we must once again recall to memory Your Honours' own promise not to introduce such considerable fractions any more, but according to the order to let such numerical parts of fractions flow in that a reader of documents can simultaneously pronounce and understand. However, that Your Honours maintain that they should have left the same pepper untouched even before delivery and moreover, appears somewhat incomprehensible to us, as to why the same was not effected before the findings were drawn up, and in the present presence of the officers or their authorized representatives, the one as well as the other might have been concluded, in order to be able to know with certainty, and in accordance with custom, the actual substance as well as the discovered shortweights of such merchandise which is poured loose into the hold and transported everywhere. From Persia, dated the ultimate of March 1741. As long as the products in returns from Bassoura and Boucheer do not become equally profitable for the Honorable Company, it will, in our opinion, be best in such weighty matters to remain on the good old footing, particularly to maintain the price of the spices, provided the dearness of money remains as it currently is, and besides this, above all to be mindful that always, in conducting trade, the most sought-after gold and silver species are bargained for at the recommended prices as far as practicable, and to ensure that Your Honour sees to obtaining the ducat for 18 mamudis instead of 20 mamudis, this being the price for which the Commission Agent negotiated the same. The reasons given for not supplying the tamarind for the government of Coromandel we have been able to understand, but by no means those which Your Honour puts forward regarding the retention of the 150,000 lbs of wheat already purchased and lying ready for Batavia upon the departure of the said vessel, and that out of an opinion as if we had virtually projected sending the chaloup for its collection or making a voyage thither, which, however, will nowhere be found recorded or seen to have occurred. And even assuming that such had indeed been done by us, whereas our dictating regarding such a small craft, even in Your Honour's reply, indicates the contrary of the said opinion and thus rightly satisfies the requirement, sound reason, in our opinion, would nevertheless have required, with that retention and in view of its spoilage, to consider first what time was bound to elapse before the chaloup could make the round trip, and whether a ship would then happen to be ready to take over the wheat immediately and depart therewith toward Batavia; likewise, having let slip a good available shipping opportunity that was ready to load, instead of risking that grain upon the uncertainty of the chaloup's arrival through retaining it without reason. We believe that, beyond the cited dispassionate reflection, we also did not exert the least influence in our written instruction sent with the Middenrak, or after that date, that could cause such a hasty return, without detracting, however, from what the respected orders in this regard entail, because we quietly relied upon Your Honour's years of experience regarding the fulfillment of the venerated requisitions as well as the contents of the high orders, which, with prudent observance, mostly also produce the greatest interest and pleasure for their illustrious giver. When we now consider in addition to this that if the wheat had been embarked in the ship there, some days or enough time could thereby still have passed so that there would have been an opportunity to supply the 10,000 lbs of required madder and the other sundries, since our letter of 6 June was delivered to Your Honour only 4 days after the Middenrak's departure; and now, moreover, through its deficiently loaded return, that little vessel encountered, on the very same day, although no one could have foreseen it, news that the fleet of the prize was overpowered by the Arabs who had been stationed upon it, of which Sheikh Rahma is said to be the cause, the naval admiral Mir Ali Khan and several others massacred, and that they had fled together with the ships and vessels. Since we hope that, before the receipt of this, the receipt of your letter of 5 April will already have appeared from our writings, we shall make no further mention of it, and likewise not concerning your information regarding the trade conducted by public auction by the English with their coarse and other linens, since such was also learned locally by word of mouth, and it is assured that no party profited thereby; but as regards your expectations of the samples of linen, both old and recently sent thither, that some of them might shortly still be sold with some profit, it serves for your information that, after our notification previously made concerning the reasonable From Persia, dated the last day of March 1741. reasonable sale at Spahan of those cloths, it would not be bad to confer with the residents of that place as soon as possible, whether thereby a means might not be obtained as desired by sending the same up via Boucheer, and all goods reported unsaleable at your place via the last-mentioned place; but in case one and the other at the last-mentioned place should bring some good turnover upon arrival, the sending up could be omitted, but otherwise be sent upwards in that manner, to the end that, the most advantageous being intended and tested, that it is good in the future to have a route to be able to avoid their lying too long in the warehouses of merchants. From was also pleasant to learn, the more so as we presuppose that the greedy rulers there have been entertained with no less, and the first is found indicated in the said document, and from which various matters have arisen, with the wish that in time, through a thrifty hand, both such and all further arising expenses will be seen to be increasingly cared for and reduced, in view of the fact that the annual house rent no longer needs to be paid. Concerning the expenses incurred on merchandise in the same year, and found upon the journal under No 27 to amount to ƒ2262: 3:12, after weighing the arguments given in the letters we have marked them as inevitable, and also to have been in accordance with the license granted by us heretofore: the making of a new silver bridle, the purchase of some new, and the repair of some old horse harnesses, in which regard these incurred expenses From Persia under date of the ultimate of March 1741. expenses, along with the loss of 12 matticaals of silver, may be written off according to custom, and furthermore the receipt of the one and the other be properly handled; concerning the discovered short weights which you, by declarations under dates of the 15th and the ultimate of August last, indicated to have been discovered—the first upon an offer of, and the other under confirmed oath upon some pounds of goods and spices—we have validated them after deliberation; but as regards the difference in tare likewise discovered there, we are filled with hope that in the same instance, by the benevolent order of their High Excellencies, the High Indian Government, gracious provision will be made in the future. From Persia under date of the ultimate of March 1741. the further sale at the designated treasury in total up to ƒ65828:5. – was devalued, it being to be wished that an occasion may soon be experienced to have that capital and what belongs to it fetched here soon in tranquility, as this would fulfill our heartfelt wish completely. From Your Honor's letter of the 20th of October in answer to that of the resident at Spahan, we have seen the notification concerning the vent and poor hope of the remaining sample linens; we trust therefore, through the addition of reciprocal zeal, that something good will flow therefrom; however, with respect to the final rejection of their request and assignment under the transmission of the principal documents concerning Petrus Galdaer's debt in favor of the shipwrecked Greek named Constantijn Succa, amounting to 2060 mahmudis, we consider it to have been better to have undertaken a search into this, and, having found it to be in vain, the servants might have satisfied themselves with the consolation.
