From Persia under date ultimo March 1741. labor, yea, finally the Persian coins having also practically stayed away, not so much through unheard-of extortion by the regents, as well the Company's disinclined acceptance of the goods, in general that they were able beforehand to bring in and deliver at the cost of 10 4/5 m:s to f4:11:12 2/5 the 6 lb net locally, whereupon the Honorable Company has still only been able to gain from 11 to 13 per cent on average, seeing therefore that the said mineral trade, through a lack of abundant transport from the upper country, becomes scarcer, and, while maintaining the closest prices, even becomes yet dearer, the little that comes to show itself here and there, consequently it is to be expected in short that nothing of note will be obtained of it anymore, whereby at least not so much could be hoped to be discounted against the actual monetary losses in returns to Coromandel, besides and in addition to one in these regions, upon a sale of wares, being obliged to accept the money that has been made current in the land by the ruler thereof; in order then to help prevent more than ordinary damage From Persia under date ultimo March 1741. damage to the best of our ability, we have, with respect to so important a matter, at the said session, after everything had been considered back and forth with the utmost deliberation, as well as that undoubtedly the competitors must be of a similar opinion, since they seem rather willing to continue therein according to their ability than to aim at other specie for the welfare of the Honorable Company, resolved to permit Your Honor and the merchant the Honorable Jacob van der Woert to purchase the 6 lb of purified copperwork, when such, conformable to Your Honor's last writing, is impossible to obtain cheaper, then to be allowed to go from 11 to 12 mamudis for the said 6 lb, but no higher, because upon calculation the Honorable Company then (on the presupposition indeed that the previous purchases at 10 4/5 mamudis for 6 lb only profited 12 per cent as has been said) would now gain less, namely 9 per cent, and retain the value of the money, and thus might still see their loss of money on Coromandel completely recovered; provided the price there remains as before, and is not diminished, From Persia under date ultimo March 1741. diminished, provided also that the well-inclined writing of the Right Honorable Governor Jacob Mossel (in order to be able to hope for somewhat better advantage) could be kept in mind and fulfilled, to wit: To send thither the undamaged, old, pure copperworks found among the purchase, just as they might be, and without further breaking, bending, or flattening together, etc.; item Instead of cakes, to provide the copper cast into plates, if possible. (yet lower:) Agrees (signed:) A:sk V:n Es, Honorable sworn Clerk: Bassoura To the same as before Whereas, owing to the manifold occupations with the arrival of the Company's sloop De Valk on the 6th of the past month of June, and which navigated towards Gamron again on the 14th of this month, only now having obtained the opportunity to answer Your Honors' agreeable letters dated 16th February and 25th June of the current year, which were delivered to us on the 1st of May and the 11th, together with the duplicate thereof on the 15th of this month, I now proceed to that effect by expressing thanks to Your Honors for the sent samples of wheat and the communication of its price; and since I have likewise been ordered by the Gamron council respectively to correspond with Your Honors about this, I have, in compliance therewith, enclosed herewith a similar sample, from which (as I believe) it will appear that its quality matches; but regarding the price, the maund of 108 lb with the expenses here will amount to at least mam:s 12½ or ƒ 5: 6: 4, which, compared to what Your Honors paid there at m:s 8½ for the 82 lb, or otherwise for the equal weight mam:s 11 1/5, shows a difference of mam:s 1 3/10 or ƒ— 11 23/5; but considering Your Honors say that the price is at the bazaar, and that on top of that there will certainly fall excessive expenses for porterage, lower weights during processing, and export toll, I believe that in the final calculation there will not appear to be much difference; wherefore in my opinion it will be most advisable for Your Honors to proceed with the provision of 50 to 60 lasts to be safe, while I do not doubt that I will be able to procure the remaining quantity of 40 to 58 lasts here, as having about half thereof already lying ready at present. Furthermore, pursuant to previously made due promises, Your Honors receive back, with kind thanks, the copy of the respective detail recently sent from Gamron to Batavia, together with such a packet of the said council's much esteemed writings as arrived there for Your Honors on the 25th of July last by the Company's runner Mhamed Alie; as well as the copy of what I communicated thither in all humility upon the departure of the sloop De Valk, from which Your Honors will see that trade regarding almost all imported goods here has enjoyed a fair success, and with which I wish that Your Honors may likewise succeed there to satisfaction. Bassoura To the same as before By the return of the Company's runner Ahametalie on the 9th of this current month, I duly received Your Honour's particularly pleasant letter of the 25th of August, preceded by a packet of writings from our respective head office Gamron, and which, after having taken proper reading thereof, was yesterday conveyed and offered in all humility onward to the Honourable, highly esteemed Lord Commander and the Council there, just as I now most kindly present to Your Honour herewith such highly esteemed writings as were delivered to me for Your Honour from there upon the arrival of the Company's sloop De Valk on the 13th of this month. To my singular joy I have learned that Your Honour has succeeded to satisfaction with the purchase of the ordered 60 lasts of wheat, and were still in a position, if required, to acquire more, for which reason I then most amicably request Your Honour to please enlarge that parcel with another 10 to 15 lasts, since I, having secured circa 38 lasts here, was urgently requested by the regents to cease further purchases because otherwise, with that grain rising even higher in price, the poor inhabitants would not be in a position to obtain a bite of bread; which reasonable request of theirs I could not well refuse, but rather granted it and gave way to the reasons therefor. Having further learned with much astonishment from Your Honour's above-mentioned documents that Your Honours, before-mentioned, have dispatched the ship Middenrak directly to the head office, without shipping Your Honour's ready-lying grains or ordering that vessel to touch at this place to take in what has been made ready here, since neither from Your Honours nor the Gamron Council respectively has any counter-demand in that regard appeared to me; on which account I then very kindly request Your Honour to please elucidate that mistake to me, and also upon a good occasion, according to order, to send hither as much of Your Honour's remaining cloves and nuts as Your Honour can most conveniently spare and cannot vend there, since there is great embarrassment for them here. The news from this quarter entails mainly that the day before yesterday word came in here that the entire Persian armada (others maintain it would only be ships) has been overrun by Arabs assigned thereto, the Persians and among them Duke Mhier Alie Chan killed, and furthermore those vessels carried to Musquetta; what the truth may be, that best of teachers, time, will shortly reveal. Finally, I refer to the enclosed extract of my respectful letters dispatched yesterday to our head office Gamron regarding the recently received sample cloths. Bassoura To the same as before These few lines serve to inform Your Honors that upon the decease of the late Honorable Mr. van Leijpzig, a bill of exchange was found among the estate papers, concerning which the Honorable, Worshipful Mr. Carel Koenad, senior merchant and commander of this Persian Directorate, together with the Council at Gamron, has long since written to Your Honors' residency, relating to the well-known affair of the estate of a certain Greek Christian, the late Constantijn Zucca, the assigned amount from Souratta amounting in total to 7738 mamudis, and the interest at 1/4 per cent per month since the 28th of August, the year 1737, as the money had to be reimbursed then, calculated up to the 4th of July, the year 1738, amounting to fully 342 florins. From Persia under date of the last of March 1741. would have happened long ago, but through the lack of the Company's couriers who were kept back on the road, we have to this end taken into service the runner Ambersia, who is the bearer of this, hoping to learn thereafter whether anything will have come of that payment, and if before the presentation of this he might already have departed, please have the goodness to forward the said bond toward Bengal, as the interpreter Elias Sahid, while copying this, came to report to us that he, Petrus Galdaar, still has some money outstanding with his proxies in Bengal in Surat, whereby we then hope to see an end to that private affair. On the 10th of July, the bookkeeper and provisionally Second of this office, Steven Prumelaar, in the company of the interpreter David Sahid, arrived safely here with 34 cargas, both gift goods and first-rate sample clothes. And to impart further to Your Honour the news recently arrived here from Persia under date of the last of March 1741. concerning the Viceroy Reza Colie Miersa: that he was deposed by his father, that Welie Mamed was appointed, and after everything was taken from him, appointed commander of his army, and likewise that Nadir Shah had acted very rigorously toward his son's councillors Miersa Boggie and Miersa Nahiem, and, God be thanked, presently a great change for the better has occurred here, for now the merchants can sit in their shops in peace and trade quietly, whereas for some time they were very miserably mistreated, which disheartened many. The former governor of this city, the lord Hattembeek, received a rich robe of honour from His Royal Highness Nadir Shah, is now named Hattem Chan, and has been appointed governor of the entire country of Fars in place of Mhamettackie Chan. Iman Werdi Chan, former naser of the King, has been appointed over the King's troops in the lowlands, but has need of no one other than the aforementioned lord Hattem Chan, who will have to pay his troops, from Persia under date of the last of March 1741. and as we have heard, is also a good man. Since he, Petrus, had departed for your residency to assign that matter to you, we could not, regarding your Honour and concerning this, act otherwise than has occurred. Furthermore, we note with gratitude the prices both of the sample cloths sold and of those bid upon that remain in balance at your Honour's residency. It was with sorrow that we perceived that the English gentlemen over there, with their public auctions, have so greatly ruined the market for Bengali linens that your Honour is of the opinion that most of those cloths will have to be returned, which is truly very lamentable for the Honourable Company, and it were to be wished that those harmful traders would put an end to their underhand dealings, for which we hope for the best for the interest of our lords and masters. 939 From Persia under date of the last of March 1741. could not endure, and currently there is still little demand, for which reasons also the English supercargos have disposed of the coarse linens that had been lying with them for three years, at public auction and for whatever the merchandise would fetch, in a very disadvantageous manner, and converted 100 packs of the same on indifferent voyages in order to prevent further interest accruing on their masters' goods, and thus simply to obtain cash and effect their departure. From Persia, dated the last of March 1741. traded for the new Persian currency, currently commonly known as nadries, and that for the prices set upon it by Your Honours, partly because we could make no other calculation on that specie than what that venerated resolution so wisely dictates to us, and partly because the merchants, through the greater abundance of nadries, come to fetch those precious wares somewhat more eagerly to the masters' advantage, and consequently also seem to find their account better therein than at the assessment of chialottes and piasters, which we then hope may also be considered as such by Your Honours, and our conduct in this matter graciously passed over; as well as that it may be regarded as well done that we have not sent the remainder of the nutmegs, which at present consists only of 627½ lb., to your parts with this vessel according to Your Honours' highly esteemed order, but have retained them here on account of their insignificance, yet principally because From Persia, dated the last of March 1741. because we can thereby still dispose of some cloves. From no acceptable prices have been offered, but hope nevertheless remains to dispose of some of it shortly with profit, which profitable presupposition we could wish might also be made regarding the sale of the Javanese coffee beans, since that sort is not in demand at all here because of the abundant supply of Mocha coffee, as Your Honors will be able to examine this in detail, as well as the necessary matters concerning the trade in cloth (if you please), from our humble replies in the margin to the highly venerated extracts from the Homeland, inserted herein in the following manner, and to which, for the sake of brevity, we quite humbly refer. Highly venerated extract from a letter written by the High Honorable, Highly Respected Gentlemen Seventeen in the Homeland to the Right Honorable the Governor-General and the Councilors of the Indies at Batavia, dated 10 September Anno 1738, concerning the matter of Persia. From Persia, the last of March 1744. put into effect, in order to give Your Right Honorable and Highly Respected Honors the required satisfaction by retrieving what is superfluous. A short and clear style of writing, with the humble response standing alongside here, in observance of this highly respected extract, much less passing over to Persia. Regarding Persia, we cannot engage in answering all the letters that we receive from that directorate, for we have merely looked over or skimmed through them as much as possible with the eye without being able to read those articles, not only because of the tedious and all too vexatious tale of occurrences not worth mentioning, but especially because of the unusable small script, etc., which, combined with the burdensome manner of writing of the ministers contrary to our so numerous prohibitions, seems continually employed to throw sand into our eyes, so that we would make great efforts, read much, and understand nothing at all. 951 From Persia, the last of March 1744. If one does not have so much authority over the Company's servants in the Indies that one can keep them to an orderly merchant style, who are accustomed not only to state everything briefly but also to make known everything that pertains to matters of importance, in a legible hand, without holding one another up with useless tales of indifferent matters that do not concern trade nor themselves in the slightest part, what then shall one say of their management itself, and how is it then possible to set any order at offices where one has seen, for so many years consecutively, that the Company's interest has been neglected, the merchandise and cash misappropriated and plundered away, or to keep the employees in any way to their duty? But it is not worth the trouble to plow this shore any longer. However, in order to demonstrate once how the Company has been treated, and how, upon our heavy complaints, we have each time with the utmost patience, yet each time in vain, awaited the hope of improvement that was then promised as faithful and honest Company servants, as they style themselves, we shall not go back to what happened many years ago, 953 From Persia, the last of March 1741. but only bring up a few examples of what occurred in the space of 2 to 3 years, and which we have briefly gathered from all the wastepaper and sand-letters of the ministers of this directorate. Thus, in the first place, there appears the excessive underweight of 2283¾ lb on the copper pice brought by Valkenisse and Noordwijkerhout, which Your Honors indeed ordered to be reimbursed by those on whom it falls, and who held such unaccountable and slack management with the goods of the lords and masters; but who they are and where they are to be found, time must tell. Meanwhile, the Company is left with the loss. Persia, the last of March 1741. And in another case, noted in our letter of 12 September 1736, where an underweight of 1263¾ lb had occurred on 1879 bags of similar pice, one did not hesitate to offer as an excuse that a great number of the bags in which that copper coin had been kept were found suffocated, rotten, and wholly unfit, and wishing to make Your Honors as well as us believe that the copper had also disappeared through the rotting of those bags. Here in Bassoura, Javanese coffee has never been in demand since the year 1724, or the re-establishment of this office, to the present day, since a trial was already made with it in the year 1728 by sending hither a quantity of 10 bales or 2500 lb, which were returned again the following year or Anno 1729, for the reason that there was not the slightest prospect of its sale, and which we presently also cannot accomplish. In our letter of 11 September 1734, we made it our business to point out to the Persian ministers, and to convince them from their own letters, that Javanese coffee through.

In respect of the sale of the woolens at Bassoura, we can impart nothing advantageous to Your Right Honourables, since of the 12 pieces of Emperor's assortment brought here in the year 1737 per the yacht Anthonia, 7 pieces were sent back to Gamron in the year 1739 in order to prevent their further ruin, seeing that the same could not be sold with profit, and the remaining 3 pieces were still disposed of for mamoodis 22 or ƒ9:7, which yielded a clear profit on the net return of 12¾ percent. They did not settle the matters wherewith they upon their return ruin the market for everyone to make a purchase, which we cannot prevent them from doing; because he then subsequently sells an ell of English cloth here currently measured out for 16½ m:s or must expose the same to heavy expenses and risk to which caffilas are subject on account of tolls and other vexations; and concerning the small parcel that might still be disposed of in the hot Gamron climate, that the English and French have ruined the market thereabouts, selling and bartering the fine red and green cloths (which sorts were most in demand there) against tutia, mastic, etc. for ƒ5:19:— to ƒ6:3:4 the ell, and that moreover on credit of 4 to 6 months. From Persia under date of the last of March 1741: to accommodate somewhat. But on Persian money there is a great loss, and if one examines the cargo of the ship Stadwijk recently received at Batavia as a return, it consists, besides the cash, wheat, wool, copperwork, and paisas (which last-mentioned coin was moreover stolen to such a considerable degree), of a parcel of fruits, pistachios, rosewater, cracked almonds, and similar trifles (of which many kinds can be obtained abundantly enough at the Cape of Good Hope), amounting to no less than ƒ419,109:10:8, which cargo, however, upon sale will in all likelihood bring more loss than profit, because it consists more in consumption than in trading wares. It is therefore so far from the case that we could consent to the proposal of the ministers to extend this dismal trade still further to Baghdad, to Constantinople, and Aleppo, or authorize them to sell goods on 2 to 3 months' credit, that we are daily minded from time to time to abolish all such offices as Persia and others, which make the Company's business large and unmanageable and cause more harm than profit, unless Your Honour or the Persian ministers could demonstrate to us how that enterprise could in any way be kept going with profit without falling significantly behind, which we would then still be willing to await for the last time. Regarding the Kirman goats, one might speak further now that it has finally become known that the mange is the cause of the mortality, against which here in this country washing with tobacco or saltpetre water is used, which one might perhaps also do in the Indies if it were for private individuals. But since experience teaches that everything done for the Company turns out badly, the ministers must refrain from purchasing and sending over all such animals and from all new enterprises that have been proposed for the profit of the Company, namely from wool-dyers, turbans, painted spreads, and fine nettlecloths; for if it does not succeed with the common, ordinary merchandise such as coffee, broadcloths, etc., what else is to be expected from the uncommon than heavier damage. Our orders regarding the collection of Kirman wool are to be found in our latest demand for returns, to which we refer, in the expectation that the same will be followed precisely. Regarding the fulfillment of the demands, we can mention with much respect that concerning the required 50 lasts or 150,000 lb of wheat we have completely succeeded, and have assessed the same, of such quality as the sample thereof in a sealed small bag sent herewith, at mt 82 or ƒ3:12:4 the 102 lb, and have it lying ready here for shipment by the sloop De Valk according to Your Honours' kind notice, while we have also communicated the most essential parts thereof to Bushehr under date of 25 June and 21 July last, copies of which we present to Your Honours herewith; however, on this shipping opportunity we have left the respective Coromandel requisition regarding wet and dry dates unfulfilled, and preferred to delay it until the dispatch of the aforementioned sloop, or rather Your Honours' further orders, for reasons that this fruit is now nearly a year old, and the new harvest is fast approaching, after the collection of which we shall be able to fulfill that requirement in fresh and good quality, and also before the departure of the Batavia ships, much better to satisfaction than at present; therefore we most humbly request that this may be accommodated by Your Honours on those grounds, and also approved that we, in our small letters sent herewith in copy and the small demand attached thereto under date of 8/7 June last, have most humbly requested, above the linens of Bengal demanded in the previous year, namely: 1,200 pieces of coarse malmuls of Radhanagar, 1,200 pieces ditto of Shantipur, and 400 pieces of coarse khasas of Jagannathpur. From Persia, under date of the last of March 1741. We implore forgiveness for the mistake in drawing up the demand for merchandise sent from here under the date of the last of January of the current year, since our intention and petition extended essentially only to being excused from those goods excluded therein, insofar as possibility permitted. Concerning the still outstanding debt of the cloth merchants, we can now most humbly report that we have done everything possible to collect it, but have so far received nothing of it; nevertheless, their present inability, yet evident inclination to pay off that debt in installments in due time, has not yet left us entirely without hope. Old copperware, driven up here unpurified by the English nation recently to 58 mamudis or 24 guilders and 13 stivers per man of 27 pounds, could not be obtained purified without small pieces and clippings, and of which we have mostly cleared ours by means of smelting and refining inside the Honorable Company lodge, as well as having it transported in cakes and paying the laborers so much that this cleaned mineral in cakes costs the Honorable Company 63½ mamudis or 26 guilders, 19 stivers, and 12 pennings per man of 27 pounds, in order thereby to prevent, as much as possible, the noticeable wastage during transport and processing, regarding which undertaking of ours we therefore also hope to receive Your Noblenesses' favorable approval in due course. To speak now regarding the presentation of the gifts to which we would be subject here when sending a sloop hither, as opposed to a ship laden with merchandise, according to Your Noblenesses' wise desires contained in your highly esteemed letter of May 5th of last year; we shall now most obediently serve and state in reply that in case only one sloop were to land here in an entire year, the difference in the usual visual offerings will not be nearly as great as the difference in the supply of goods brought by a ship or a sloop would be. This is because Achmed Pasha and other city authorities, according to the greedy nature of the Turks, nevertheless want to have their customary annual recognitions and cannot be satisfied without them; but once they have enjoyed these once a year, whether upon the arrival of the one or the other, the said gentlemen regents, when another ship or sloop appears in that same year, are quite a bit more civil and can be satisfied with a proportionate small gift according to its charter and cargo, as is witnessed with the English and French nations, who each sometimes receive 3 to 4 ships here in a year, just as has been shown to us again this season to our sensible regret, given that the English recently received a ship from Bengal and one from Surat, and the French received two ships and a brigantine from Bengal, with which they have greatly accommodated and still accommodate the merchant here. And since after the discharging of the cargo from the ship Middenrak, visits were paid to the regents of this city according to custom, and upon making these visits on August 6th last were draped with robes of honor, we have nevertheless not been able to deliver the customary gifts to those covetous people so far, because gold fabrics and fine shawls, which appear most pleasing to those gentlemen, could not be obtained so quickly, as the cargo from the Surat ship was brought ashore very late. That is then also the reason why we have not yet been able to prepare and send the memorandum thereof with this letter, though we do send the findings on the cargo from the said vessel, which we hope may meet with a favorable consideration from Your Noblenesses for the reasons stated therein along with the declaration annexed thereto; since we could not discern whether the ship's officers had taken the required precautions to prevent the shortages cited therein, although the sappanwood was brought here exceptionally dusty, which the crew members say was principally caused because the dust of the entire batch loaded at Onrust, through the working of the ship, settled downward, and consequently the cleanest had to be discharged at Gamron, which indeed merits its consideration. On the voyage from Gamron hither, the bearer of this, or the ship Middenrak, encountered no disasters, except that it lost its bower anchor in heavy weather somewhat on the other side of Bandar-e Bushehr, around Cape Bardistan. According to the precautions taken and the vessel's remote distance, no desertion of the crew assigned thereto occurred, but some were snatched away by death from this perishable life, namely the assistant surgeon on June 12th, and the cooper on the following day.

Persia, under date ultimo March 1741. had fallen short of the declaration, yet having found after its accurate reweighing that its weight came out correctly, the customs officers had to depart again with shame, which all arose from nothing else than because those people are, and still are being, severely tormented and urged in a dreadful manner to furnish money by their haughty and very spendthrift Agmed Pasha at Bagdaat; just as it is repeatedly supposed here that this Pasha causes the cash of all sorts of merchants who wish to pass Bagdaat with an appreciable sum of money and come hither to be taken away, and gives in its place a bill of exchange on his deputy here at Bassora, who subsequently must also take care to satisfy those bills of exchange upon receipt out of the customs revenues or some other fund. From Persia, dated ult:mo March 1741. being relative to the enclosed layers, since the duplicate of that writing without the same has already been dispatched from here with the ship Middenrak; meanwhile, furthermore most humbly annexed hereto, the account of repairs, or what from the 26th of Janu: to the 25th of the current month has been expended on building materials and labor wages for the Hon. Company's Lodge and horse stable (after obtained license, in the most frugal, yet at the same time necessary manner) to the amount of ƒ585:11:8, and for whose favorable approval we come very humbly to request Your Honors, with the assurance that everything thereby has been completed firm and strong and for long durability under strict supervision.
