To obtain the 12 lb of madder root seeds requested by your Honors, we have done everything within our power and have sent out the Company's interpreter and broker several times to trace them; however, we received the report each time that the said madder seed was never gathered here, and for that reason was also not to be had, but that for the cultivation of this madder root, the smallest unusable runners or fibres, when dug up from the ground, were collected while still fresh and used for its propagation: so that we sincerely regret that we cannot accommodate your Honors therewith. And whereas we have now been favorably instructed by your Honors to send the Javanese and Ceylonese coffee beans to Bender Abbouscheer if they would not sell here, and since we to date have exerted all efforts in vain regarding the Javanese coffee remaining here (while the Ceylonese, see our report of 8 August 1683 From Persia under date of the last of March 1741. 8 August last, has been sold), this shall accordingly be effected at the first opportunity, and along with it shall also be transferred all the cloves that can be spared at this office; however, the small remaining stock of nutmeg that was still on hand here has on the contrary (as evident from the sale demonstrated herebefore) been entirely converted into ready cash. Since we, with regard to the vent of the Javanese coffee beans, in humble replies to your Right Honourable High Esteemed missive of 10 September 1738, as far as was possible and known to us, recently have declared and consequently perceive no change therein, we shall, requesting a favourable interpretation, most obediently refer thereto. They complain that the recently received powder sugar had been so wet, black, and syrupy that a great scarcity of that merchandise must have existed in the city if the same could only have been disposed of for a reasonable price, whereas the English and French sugars, which far surpassed the Company's sugars in quality, had been disposed of so cheaply that it resembled giving away rather than selling. In like manner it had also gone with the coffee beans that the French had imported and managed to sell at 13 stivers 9 1/5 pennings per pound, but when one offered the Company's beans at 11 stivers, the same are unsaleable, even if one should come to the extremity of alleging, as the Basra servants do in their letter to us of 18 May 1736, that the 100 small bales recently sent to them by Your Honour, and also sufficiently recommended, had been heated and spoiled on the inside, just as the same have also said here before concerning the sugar. Of the Dutch cloth we receive the same advice, but as true as it is that the English and French nations import so much sugar that is so much better in quality, and which they can also deliver much cheaper than the Company, we must ask from where then the French and English manage to obtain such sugars, and indeed where they also get the coffee from, if it is not from Java. For they want to say that they obtain the sugars from China, which does not agree with what we have previously had under the subject of China. And likewise on account of the vent of the cloths, although we have nothing to add thereto except that the same are presently worth more per ell than before. The Dutch fine fabric is currently paid here at 24 mamudis or f 10:4, which would differ 2 mamudis or f —:17 for the better with the recently and previously mentioned sale shown in the inserted return. Thus we now request Gamron to be provided on occasion with some pieces consisting of red, purple, green, and coffee colour according to ability, because few cloths from Aleppo were imported here this year and therefore that merchandise, though principally the cited colours, is currently in better demand, as the dark blue and light yellow cloths are not esteemed here at all. Currently, fine English cloth is also paid here at 17 mamudis or 7:4:8 per ell, and for the French ditto 16 mamudis or f 6:16. The hail-white candy sugar that is sometimes imported here by the English and Moors from Madras and Surat in small chests is, so one tells us, said to come with their ships from China, and the common candy and white powder sugar the English and French bring mostly from the Malabar Coast and Madras. From Persia under date of the last day of March 1741. have noted, namely that Your Honors yourselves sent 700000 lb to China, from which it appears that the Chinese empire does not of itself yield such an abundance of sugar that foreign nations could play with it in the manner that the Honorable Company's servants assert. And with respect to the coffee, it is unthinkable that the said nation would fetch it from Mocha, since, according to the servants' claims, they would have to spend more on purchase costs there than the Company offers it for in Persia. And so the Indian reports frequently run contrary to one another, so that we no longer know what to believe or think, much less what measures to take or orders to issue. For, for instance, when the ministers in the above-mentioned letter of 1 October 1737 had said that, if they had been provided with merchandise in their time, the profits of the book year 1735/6 would have been rather greater, they continue in their letter of 10 November 1738 that trade in that place was declining, and the merchant was so miserably situated, and that the profits in that year had turned out even less, as having amounted in the book year 1737/8 to no more than f 30455:19:8, and consequently f 4267:7:- less than in the year 1735/6, when there was a lack of merchandise. We can therefore, at the request of the servants, express our satisfaction regarding what was written by them to the Lord Ambassador Kalkoen at Constantinople, through whose good offices they had obtained from the Ottoman Court to be allowed to enjoy within Turkish territory the privileges of Dutch merchants, and especially also the Capitulation concluded between the Turkish Emperor and the State of the United Netherlands in the year 1612 (the said placcaat being found for their information in the large book, folio 3 or 383); but what help are all such commands and privileges when trade is in decline. The same is indeed not to be imputed to Your Honors' direction and zeal for the service of the Company, for from Your Honors' writings dispatched from time to time we are sufficiently convinced that Your Honors have not failed to do all that was possible, and have placed their duty before the ministers both at Gamron and at Bassoura in all seriousness, although Your Honors have seen no more effect from it than we from ours. And we can therefore recommend nothing else, just as we also do not doubt that Your Honors will persevere therein until one day the long-desired success will be perceived, or else one must also resolve to break up the factory at Bassoura. Your Honors' established orders to prevent the short weights on the old copperworks and peisas, which were so considerable last year, as we made known in our letter, meet with our approval, but Your Honors should continue in that regard whenever, from above, for gum galbanum, mastic, or madder root, in order to avoid the loss of interest on their money and merely to depart again quickly, and thus, we say, they cause much damage to the Company's trade here, and it is also noted that those nations are yearly the first on the market with their sugar and have already supplied the merchant for a large part before the Honorable Company's ships appear here. Furthermore, we submit for consideration whether annealing and burning off would not be just as good for purification as beating off or scouring, both of the peijsas and of the copperworks, but we leave this to Your Honour's discretion. Overland we have received another letter this year, dated 10 October 1738. It cost a great deal of postage, but if there are no more pressing matters or matters of greater importance to write about than the contents of that letter were once again, we wish in the future to be excused from all such writings, which bring more confusion than light to the matters, in order to save those necessary costs of letter postage in these bad times. You will again be pleased to look upon the monthly specification for November annexed hereto, which in ordinary and extraordinary charges amounts to m:s 964 or f 409:14, and whereon we also hereby supplicate Your Honors' most favorable approbation. Because cloves, since their sale for Nadiris, but principally because the merchants have learned that in Bendher a Boucher little or nothing more is on hand, have had a rather better vent here than before, as has been duty-bound made known hereinbefore, and no further spices remain here; so we are now also of Your Honors' opinion, however, not to reduce the prices of these precious wares here at present, and our request to sell the same uniformly with the commission of Bhendera Boucher was solely founded upon the 8 per cent which each accountant, after subtraction of all monetary and other losses, comes to show clear upon its net yield, in slight consideration that from Bendher a Boucher the ducats and Spanish reals may not be charged respectively higher to the main office than is done from here, and consequently thereon (if it is not as much as here) at least some loss falls, and for which, however, nothing is charged in that commission; yet we shall bow our sentiment to that of Your Honors with much respect, and will not venture further on this subject (in the hope of gracious interpretation), but on the contrary most humbly implore Your Honors for pardon if we have erred in that regard. On 13 November last, the new musallim, or governor, appointed by Ahmed Pasha of Baghdad, by name Yahya Aga, made his entry into this city with much pomp and outward state, and for which magnanimous purpose that regent stayed after his arrival a whole day in the village of Minawi with the Captain Pasha for preparation; and notwithstanding we have first caused this new governor (who is acquainted with the old customs and in that same capacity was here once before in the year 1737) to be welcomed by the Company's interpreter Jacob Sahid, and thereafter also went to welcome him in person, we have nevertheless postponed the usual gifting until today, in case the Company's vessel promised to us by Your Honors' uncommon goodness should still happen to appear here within a few days, to the end of then being able to manage with the giving of a moderate gift to that governor for his welcome and the ship, and the Company thereby be advantaged.

From Persia, dated the last of March 1741. Middenrak for the service of the Crown; obtained transport for himself and his soldiers to pursue the enemy, and what was accomplished with the Company's keels appears in one of the Persian copies sent to Jmoem Werdie Chan. But that single loan seems not to have been sufficient for the Honorable Company, which after all draws no annual quota to clear the Gulf of enemy rabble and therefore is not obliged to keep a ship or ships here. Consequently, the Company's vessels come solely with orders from the ministers, and with goods to stimulate the prosperity of trade, and not to wage war. As stated, notwithstanding what is implied in the aforementioned grounds, they are in no way obliged to assist the king with ships in occurrences of such nature; and on that basis a refusal ought to be justified even by His Majesty himself, since granting a ship takes place contrary to the high orders of our High and Mighty lords. From Persia under date of the last day of March 1741. merchandise and the directive subsequently issued on 22 April of the recently elapsed year, a very contradictory interpretation was applied, which caused the books to become inept, and for the redress thereof two remedies served to be demonstrated upon that finding, in order to set the same right again and make them balance with the main books of style, at least in proportion to their confused condition, as well as to prevent further loss of time. Therefore, after weighing the nature of the matter, considering the remedy proposed in this case, it was found good to accept the latter of the two found in that finding as the easiest, to the end of proceeding accordingly here and there, and to achieve an end to such a strange book error. Furthermore, the local finding is enclosed herewith for the present, and hereafter your Honour shall receive an extract from the main books, in order to be able to proceed accordingly thereafter, with orders to pay somewhat more accurate attention in the future to what is written from here, for the prevention of errors, and also to spare us the trouble of encumbering our agenda with unnecessary work, as we have enough to do besides that. As regards the sworn certification sent hither by your Honour From Persia under date of the last day of March 1741. sworn certification concerning the underweight indicated therein on some spices and other pound goods occurring within a full year, the necessary consideration took place in the same meeting and was also approved; provided that it is believed that such prominent shortages could not have been prevented by better supervision, which one is obliged to exercise when opening the warehouses and delivering goods, for if it occurred then, the goods are lost nonetheless, even if the losses are sworn to, since care could have been taken against that, so that everything did not occur out of an appearance of nonchalance, which easily happens. On the 18th of February of the current year, your letter of the 15th of January past was safely delivered to us through the goodness of the Right Honorable Director Carel Koenad and Council; however, the appropriate answer thereto can only be given once we come to see what the household furniture and two horses, etc., remaining over there, have yielded upon sale, in order to then be well founded not only to make an assessment of what one may permit you to receive without prejudice to the Honorable Company and its precious honor, but also to bring an end to this delicate estate matter. To which end, on the 30th of January past, all the sent-over fine gems, rings, clothes, etc., still belonging to the estate of the late Mr. van Leijpzigh, were publicly auctioned and sold to the highest bidder, except for A ruby of eleven and three-quarters carats, according to your valuation worth m:s 3000. A heart-shaped cut diamond, weighing 5 carats, likewise valued at 3600. A long emerald, weighing 12½ carats 900. and 3 stones in kind, which together are considered worth m: 7500. Honorable, Pious. From since no interested buyers were to be found for them in all Gamron, on which account we have mutually agreed, in the best interest of the estate, to ask you herewith whether no inclined persons might be found over there, as we are certain that there will be more of them, and especially now that the king is about to arrive, than here; in which case we would then send them thither by the first secure and safe opportunity, but if not, by the first maritime opportunity to Batavia to be placed at the disposal of their High Noble, Severe, and Grand Worships, since we by no means dare take it upon ourselves to relinquish them below the appraised value, to achieve which we have little hope here.
