1087 2 From Persia under date of the last of March 1741. there being utterly no expectation of payment, and moreover, at the time of the first signatory's presence in Gamron, an order was issued to your residency on behalf of the Company to make no further mention of that affair until it was concluded, and only to mention it in the daily register. Therefore, we also return herewith the copy of the obligation, together with its translation, in the manner received, expressing that we are heartily sorry that things have gone so poorly over there with the Honorable Company and Mr. Malius in respect of the late Mr. van Leijpzigh. Furthermore, there have been sent to us here by the Honorable Respected Governor and Council at Gamron the extracts from the letters exchanged between their Honors and you regarding the linens sold over by you with good profit, and we have additionally been ordered to correspond with you concerning this essential point of trade, as well as to discover, by sending the prices obtainable here, where those cloths might be disposed of most advantageously. For what has been communicated both regarding the arrival of the Company's caravan with the provisional second Steven Pruijmelaar and the interpreter David Sahid at your place, as well as the further imperial news, we are very much obliged to you; meanwhile, we heartily congratulate Mr. Aalmis and the second Steven Pruymelaar, namely the former with the provisional administration as head and the latter with that of second, and moreover wish them a blessed satisfaction, while in return we can communicate nothing else to you concerning Nader Shah than that his ambassador with twelve elephants, one of which he presented in the name of that formidable monarch to Achmed Pasha at Baghdad, and about fourteen days ago with his entourage, after having enjoyed many honors from that generous pasha inside Baghdad, traveled on from there with a suite of six hundred men and under escort of some people of the said Pasha to Constantinople, as is claimed here, and as you also confirm, to demand the city of Basra, Baghdad, and half of the holy places in Mecca from the Grand Signior or Turkish Emperor for the Persian King.

1691 From Persia under date of the last day of March 1745. to claim his master, and upon whose return one here truly expects to learn whether war between the Persians and Turks will be declared or not; however, the former is indeed to be presumed, since the city of Baghdad has recently been reinforced from all sides from Constantinople with munitions of war. Finally, nothing further remains for us than to request Your Honours in the most serious manner that, should Your Honours happen to learn that any hostile enterprise against the Persians is about to take place at this location, to give us notice thereof at the earliest opportunity by means of a vigilant courier, to the end that we may all the more promptly direct our necessary measures for the best service of the Honourable Company. And concerning the esteemed order of the Gamron Council, to the end of learning whether some goods lying here unwanted and unsaleable might not still be sold over there with tolerable profits after deduction of expenses, etc., it serves in satisfaction thereof that the merchandise lying unsaleable in loco consists only of pound goods: 400 lb. From Persia, under date of the last of March 1741. and, God be thanked, until then everything has still been bearable; therefore we will not doubt in the least that the small goods dispatched with the said Casselah on 12 June will have been properly delivered and handed over by the muleteers to Your Right Honorable Worships' satisfaction before the appearance of this letter. May this modest letter then serve in turn as a most humble reply to Your Right Honorable Worships' ever honored missive, first with heartfelt thanks for the sent extracts from the resolution and several other enclosures according to its register, by which we shall conduct ourselves in the most humble manner; and we inform Your Right Honorable Worships that on 10 July the provisional second of this trading post, Steven Pruymelaar, and the Gamron interpreter, David Sahid, arrived safely with the Honorable Company's Cassilah. It should also be reported that the packs containing the forwarded goods arrived safe and sound, though with a great difference in weight, which Your Right Honorable Worships, if pleased to do so, will be able to perceive from a sworn statement made by the said second; and the pieces of linen etc. have been received properly in accordance with the invoice, with the exception of the radix China, which indeed came out to 20 lb in weight, but upon inspection 9 lb turned out to be black from worms and completely reduced to dust and debris, so that the same can find no employment for the desired purpose of making small presents to those who desire them, other than solely to be offered up to the fire, as the copy of the statement provided by the commissioners and included herewith can demonstrate at large; wherefore, subject to Your Right Honorable Worships' approval, we have placed its amount, in the sum of ƒ 6: 13. 2, to the profit and loss account, just as care was not neglected to credit the main trading post, as is customary, for ƒ 6451. 9. 8, being the amount of the goods sent and charged to us by invoice; but, on the other hand, there has been debited to the account of forage and expenses of horses and travel necessities etc., in the previous manner, that which was expended yonder for the travel gear; and those which were still somewhat serviceable have been entered under the unappraised effects; the tarpaulin and paband, which were found to be of no further service, were written off to the profit and loss account, with which we hope to have given satisfaction to the ancient order; following which, according to honored command, the remaining freight charges in the sum of m:s 552 or ƒ 234:12 were fully paid to the muleteers, the bringers of the aforesaid goods. From Persia, dated the last of March 1741 to trouble your honors with such matters as can be settled without injury to the Company's honor and harm to the estate. It caused us heartfelt sorrow to learn of your honors' perplexity that, since our letter of the 21st of April, you had received no reports concerning the state of affairs here, from which to communicate what is necessary to their High Excellencies the High Indian Government, as well as your honors' anxiety regarding the caravan. We therefore hope that our last letter and the caravan with the goods dispatched on the 12th of June will have arrived shortly after the departure of your honors' aforementioned esteemed letter, and that the bales and cases will have delivered properly what was packed into them, and that all will have been found of good quality. As regards the court news, we must share with your honors the rumors regarding the viceroy Resa Koeli Mirza, that he has allegedly been deposed by his father the Wali Nimat, who, after taking everything from him, appointed him charkhchi-bashi of his army; and likewise rumors have circulated that the Wali Nimat treated his son's counselors Mirza Baqi and Mirza Rahim very severely, though he did not put them to death; and 1209 From Persia, dated the last of March 1741 and God be thanked, the merchants can at present sit peacefully in their shops, whereas for some time both high and low were very miserably harassed. The former Governor of this city, the Lord Hatem Beg, has received a rich robe of honor from the King and is now called Hatem Khan, who has been appointed Governor of Fars instead of Taqi Khan. We hope that thereby more services will be rendered here to the Honorable Company and your honors than Taqi Khan did in his time, for everyone speaks with great praise of him, Hatem Khan. The Honorable Company has also had a great friend in him during his presence here and at court, and we have often heard it told here that he himself spoke to the King with great praise of the Honorable Company, and greatly hated Taqi Khan for his conduct toward the Honorable Company and your honors. They are, as we hear, to this day sworn enemies, and it is possible that with his arrival in the lowlands some of the tricks of this Taqi Khan will be brought to light, which, in our opinion, he will have to pay for dearly enough. And the King has appointed Taqi Khan as mirza bashi and, as it is said, taken 25,000 tomans from him. Hatem Khan, as we understand, is From Persia, dated the last of March 1741 greatly esteemed by the King, and if it should happen, according to rumors, that he comes here to Isfahan before his departure for the lowlands, we shall pay the said Hatem Beg a visit in all proper decorum for the welfare and honor of the Honorable Company. Imam Verdi Khan, former nazir of the Wali Nimat, has been appointed sardar over the King's troops in the lowlands, but needs (as the Nawab told the interpreter) nobody but the Lord Hatem Khan, who will have to pay his troops, and as we have heard, is likewise a good man; whom we then sincerely wish may not become a burden anew to the Honorable Company and your honors, praying God Almighty that He may graciously deign to deliver your honors' worthy persons from all troubles. Of the rumors that previously circulated that the Wali Nimat would declare war against the Grand Signior, nothing more is heard, and we have made inquiries in this regard with various good friends of the Company and ourselves where we thought we might best learn the truth, but they were rumors of that time, as we are informed. 1225 Persia, dated the last of March 1741. not give as a gift to the Honorable Company; on the other hand, without prior knowledge or a license from the king, one could not send off much of that spikenard unless one employs a trusted Banyan for the purchase to keep it quiet, because on such a footing no purchase can be made through the Company's offices, as the matter would very soon come to light through the payment of duties and, moreover, some hands would also have to be greased, whereby that yarn would become much more expensive for the Honorable Company, and which could then at best happen only once; and should this come to light without one being able to show the freedom of its transport with raqams, a matter of great consequence might possibly arise from it. Therefore, nothing good is to be expected from beginning such a thing under this present government, and as before, in our humble opinion, we deem it best to make a request directly to the king without giving any outline thereof to the rijxhansen here, so that this may remain concealed from the Muscovite, for that nation currently trades most in it, so that the one present here would agitate not a little against it to prevent it; and thus it is presumed that Persia, dated the last of March 1741. neither the governor nor any of the native gentlemen present here would dare to interfere with it, though everything remains subject to Your Honors' respected orders, which we shall await in all subservience. Meanwhile, we did not fail to question the Turk Elias Zahid in the presence of the Banyan Wissendas concerning the 280 tomans mentioned in the letter of 30 June 1739 that had expired, who said that he did not know about this, and that he could declare before God that the deceased had never rendered him any account of one thing or another, but that around that time he had paid some debts, which the Banyan Wissendas admitted to be true and that it would amount to approximately that much, paid to the Banyan Bessentendas Naring, and Pretendas to Nagha Morwarij, and to Agha Ther, uncle of Agha Mhamed, which Your Honors could verify if desired; which three bonds together amount in principal to a sum of 230 tomans, and concerning which they declare they cannot or do not know how to give any other reasons. For the rest, we shall not fail to comply with Your Honors' respected orders whenever we might learn here of any change 1227 Persia, dated the last of March 1741. change occurring between this court and the Turk or that of the Muscovite, by informing Your Honors promptly, although after many inquiries among the Company's and our good friends we have up to now heard nothing of this, except that the Muscovite currently, as said before, trades the most in silk; and the import of woolen cloth likewise continues in the same manner without any change, so that one cannot give Your Honors the least assurance of the king's designs other than that he is now said to have subdued the Uzbek country, except for Urgench, against which no battle was fought, because that prince voluntarily declared himself a subject to him. This having been brought this far in readiness, there arrived here the private express Ibrahim with a very respected letter dated 25 October, and two days later the Company's express Mahmed Gosrouw Beet with a ditto dated the 17th preceding, whose long delay on the route was caused by his continuous illness; and the first-mentioned's delay of twelve days was caused primarily by the numerous beatings with sticks inflicted under his feet by the Lors roaming the road, which prevented him Persia, dated the last of March 1741. from marching. Nevertheless, for that reason, with due respect to Your Honors' approval, the 50 mahmudis were handed over to him, in the hope of obtaining Your Honors' approval in that regard. Furthermore, to that end we sent Monsieur Elias Sahid expressly to the Lord Nabob three to four times to inquire after that gentleman's health and to see whether anything could be discovered by that means, since His Highness had received three mandates from the King in rapid succession. The Nabob had also related that it had come to the King's ears that the Empress of Russia had a sister with a very fair and handsome daughter, and that he had fallen in love with her, desiring to marry her; whereupon the King had previously caused the Resident residing here to be addressed on the matter, to ask whether such a thing was possible and might happen, who is said to have answered that it was not impossible. To that end the King expressly appointed a great ambassador named Sardar Khan with a stately present for the Empress's sister's daughter, consisting chiefly of fine jewels, etc., said to be worth more than 200,000 tomans or 85 tons of treasure. Honorable, Pious, Discreet, The bearer of this, the sloop de Valk, returned here safely, God be thanked, on the 24th of July just passed, with which we duly received Your Honor's letter of the 12th, dispatched however on the 14th of that month, complete with its enclosure and the cargo of peysas, as well as other coins, which Your Honor sent to us therewith and which were found to be in order. By that advice it was also noted with pleasure that our letters up to and including that of 6 June were safely delivered, wherefore we hope that the accompanying small packet for Bassoura has already safely reached its destination through Your Honor's care, and which we now again recommend regarding the present enclosure, to be put into effect as soon as possible with the best runner or first presenting opportunity to From Persia, dated the last of March 1741. which Your Honor can safely entrust the same, in view of the importance thereof from its contents, as Your Honor will clearly see is required since it also comes completely under seal. And to observe brevity in this, we shall hereby refer thereto with respect to applicable matters concerning trade. As soon as we were informed of the delivery to satisfaction of the aforementioned cash sent amounting to ƒ23711:7:12 (though had it been taken here as ƒ23711:8:— it would have been more in accordance with the orders), the examination of Your Honor's activities was undertaken according to the documents sent hither on the last of the just-mentioned month. And after due consideration of everything, the amount of the first specifications was passed beforehand, in which it was shown that ƒ750:5:8 or mam:s 1765: had been disbursed. To the sloop's crew, who lay there for more than a month and also received something for the voyage, an allowance was granted according to the signed From Persia, dated the last of March 1741. 1263 expense account amounting to man:s 1393: or ƒ592:8:—. Added to this the gifts made to the rulers of Your Honor's place of residence to the amount of ƒ277:7:—, and purchase and sales expenses of ƒ530:2:8, one and the other amounts to quite a sum, and caused us no less reason for consideration in that meeting for the purpose of redress, since these 3 items are considered to be best capable of being reduced by Your Honor yourself through a better purchase of sheep or stable provisions by having a stock laid in in due time, as ancient orders command this; but in case Your Honor should fall short in the necessary means thereto for the improvement or greater satisfaction of the housekeeping, which we cannot however believe, we shall, upon receipt of a reply, declare ourselves on what has now still been passed on that footing. And concerning the account of gifts, Your Honor must above all ensure that upon the arrival of the sloop or ship, no levies are unusually imposed on the same, as otherwise not much profit would remain, and the rulers would ultimately fix their eyes too much upon From Persia, dated the last of March 1741. a continuous tribute. Therefore it is necessary that Your Honor also in this case uses your utmost effort in good time to wean them from this with civility before that harmful custom becomes too deeply rooted, if it can indeed be done. Regarding the shown shortages occurring at the unloading of that cargo there, this serves as notice that the chief mate thereof had to take the oath regarding spices, and regarding the others he was acquitted on the consideration that the powder sugar and sapanwood had remained in the sloop from Batavia, as well as the two kinds of gumlac from here having been handed over to him again unexamined just as they had been received; so that this will appear in more detail to Your Honor from the extract of that resolution. The 9 pieces of spotted gerras must, if possible, be made deliverable again by having them washed, as is customary here. Furthermore, Your Honor's requisition of a mainsail and the renting of a house at 36 mam:s a month, for the reasons given, have been approved. Regarding the agreement made with the merchants concerning the wares other than the iron and the sjoukouriasses, to collect everything within 2 months for cash, it was not altogether disagreeable to observe, because some security resides therein; but it would nevertheless have been much better had Your Honor been able to avoid that condition through greater eagerness of the merchants for the same, or an abundance of specie etc. among other merchants who had come forward for it with equal inclination, to the end that in so important a point the first should not have had to be granted such a condition, wherein they are given too much time for changing their minds, and meanwhile, besides that a bad custom could arise therefrom, or in case any of the contracting parties should happen to renounce his quota entirely

Regarding the prices of the ceded goods, and the reduction to 2 mamoodis of the common bleached salempores, we had to assume that it was not otherwise possible for Your Honour. But regarding the spelter, Your Honour must try to set the price at 9½ mamoodis in order not to spoil our market, since there is now hope of being able to sell that mineral again for that price, provided it is honoured, among other things, with Malacca tin; and on the other hand also because it is not subject to spoilage. And if it were brought here from there by English or French interlopers at 8½ mamoodis, they would still manage to make an advance of 111 percent on it from the master's own products, which then serves for Your Honour's direction. 1267 From Persia, dated 21 March 1741. serves; and concerning the completed exchange of the 500 maunds of old, cleaned copperware for the peisas currency at 35 percent, we do indeed acknowledge that a little more profit resides in that than if such had not happened. However, it would have been an even better matter if the latter could have been obtained without having to undergo the said exchange, since both products still afford some profit to the Honourable Company on the Coast of Coromandel, and should therefore be kept just as close as the competitors in that trade, the concern being too great in that capital point to concede all too much to others, let alone to disregard it entirely. And on that account, Your Honour must diligently exert yourself in conscience according to duty, as well as remain mindful to have all old copperware that is to be seized first annealed, in conformity with the superior orders enclosed herewith, to which we refer. Copperware, however, that is whole and still usable, From Persia, dated 31 March 1701. the Honourable, Respected Lord Governor of the aforementioned Coast, Jacob Mossel, has required to be further spoiled or bruised, since they believe they will be able to obtain even more profit thereby, of which annealing also entails the least damaging method. And if newly manufactured goods are to be obtained from there, Your Honour may initially send us a set of 13 to 14 maunds in weight, in order to arrange the same later for samples. In such manner His Honour has now presented an extract from Your Honour's letter concerning merchandise exported by foreign nations, in the hope that net goods may be found among them for the master's interest. And concerning the wheat, we have, at the said session, compared the received samples and Your Honour's approach to the Basra ministers, as well as the further reasons for Your Honour's expectation of how much could still be secured and the prices thereof, and taken everything necessary into consideration. During his layover, Your Honour shall also, instead of three refresh days per week, provide only two, but in place of the one that is lacking, a half-day portion of bacon or meat (in proportion to what the provisions can best bear), in order to let the crew consume the rations while still in good condition. We have deemed it fit to put this into effect in our administration from today onwards; the master, Claas Visser, having declared himself satisfied with the receipt of the said goods upon such inquiry at the estimates just held, namely that he had not the least objection to anything. And since we take it for certain that the capture of most of the King's naval fleet, including also the capital flagship De Fattesjahi, by the doings of a certain Sheikh Rame and his Arab adherents, will have been made known to Your Honour prior to the arrival of this, both by daily messengers and principally from Sheikh Mascoer, because his son Sheikh Nazir and the nephew of Sheikh Rasjet, named Sheikh Goeloem Alie, unwilling to agree with the conspirators, were respectively deprived of life and freedom, the latter being taken along as a prisoner; we have nevertheless not been able to omit giving Your Honour notice by this of these unprecedented royal occurrences, and recommending in the most serious manner to be and remain constantly on your guard, to the utmost of your ability, against any upheaval among the Arabs residing over there, or other unforeseen inconveniences, for the preservation of Your Honour's persons and the Company's effects; as well as to investigate as covertly as possible whether Sheikh Mascoer is truly loyal to the Crown or not.
