From Persia under date 31 March 1741. as in such a time everyone finds various signposts presented to them serving for their preservation, so we pray the good God in all events graciously to grant Your Honour the very best. Meanwhile we recommend Your Honour to communicate to us in answer hereto the most remarkable news, if anything might be learned there of the fleeing ships which were pursued by Cronenburg and Middenrak on the 7th of this month in order if possible to bring them back into the King's hands, immediately by the best runner, and also to give notice of this to the Basra ministers, since one cannot know where the rebellious Arabs might at any time make an incursion. But from the course of the present circumstances of the time it does not appear to us that the ministers can be relieved by the Valk of their 50,000 lb of wheat not sent hither, and thus it will be best that they take care against loss before the same spoils, Your Honour having to send a copy of this thither, and for the rest trusting in God, as being after affectionate greetings, Underneath stood: Honourable, pious, discreet. Honourable, pious, discreet, Since, besides the safe delivery of our letters of the 3rd and 10th of September just past, we also make no doubt whatsoever that Your Honour there is fully informed, yea better than we can be, of the decline of the King's fleet and where the rebels now find themselves, hearing here already of several trankies of the merchants with merchandise from Basra robbed by the same on the way hither, and that they intend to persist in such a posture; and on which account, upon the instances made by the Sea Admiral, also the Sardar Imam Verdi Khan, and other Netherland grandees, in order to make the friendship and further increase of the Persian Monarch with our Right Honourable Lords and Masters, together with the entire welfare of their trade in these regions, grow and remain flourishing, on the 26th just mentioned, after having estimated and weighed everything, we felt compelled, for the seeking out and recovery of the King's ships that ran off, to lend the Company's vessels Cronenburg and Middenrak in that manner for the second time for an expedition, as appears by a copy of the translated bond annexed hereto; and whereas the lord Ali Sultan, as well as the said Sea Admiral Mohammad Taqi Khan through the same, and the chappar who arrived the evening before yesterday in the name of the aforesaid Sardar, have not less urgently requested us to be allowed to obtain the sloop the Valk, if it should be needed, with an order to that effect to Your Honour; so we have in that weighty point, having similarly considered all circumstances and seeing what a refusal might ultimately bring about, and therefore could not avoid, for the welfare of the realm's interest and the destruction of the new sea rovers, granting the same Valk to His Highness Imam Verdi Khan by this Persian missive; adding thereto the condition to wit, if it might still be lying at anchor there; but if on a voyage, or having sailed, then to excuse it. Which has also been learned here from the said Sultan and the chappar-bashi, so that Your Honour, upon a forthcoming request, can arrange his conduct in such a dangerous time in an accountable manner, so that the high esteem of our noble masters in Batavia may not be impaired, which God forbid. And since His Highness Imam Verdi Khan is a blood relative of the Nadir Shah, we recommend to Your Honour all prudence for the preservation of everyone's favour and the attainment of one's own. Further we order Your Honour that upon the arrival of this, notice be given as soon as possible to the ministers at Basra not to proceed with the sale of the 150,000 lb of wheat already harvested, but to delay therewith until the ship Cronenburg or Middenrak (one of which Your Honour upon arrival, to wit, the one that is most convenient according to the condition of the times, can employ without having to fear any resentment from the realm here) has arrived with Your Honour; since we have found it good, as said, after the aforesaid accomplished expedition, to send a vessel thither for the fetching of those grains and 4,000 lb of dry and 4,000 lb of wet dates for the Coromandel Government.

1279 Heer From Persia under date 31 March 1741. to employ and make use of, in order thus to use that vessel both in the service of the Honorable Company and of the realm, and thus kill two birds with one stone; yet the aforementioned ministers shall have to be mindful that all extraordinary expenses of gifts, etc. shall be left to their account, in order thus to keep the Honorable Company free of all damage, since it would have been their bounden duty to send off those grains in accordance with our order previously given by letters of 6 June last per Middenraak and not by the said keel after unlading, and to keep that crop there until the arrival of the sloop De Valk, as we do not know to recall that a similar order was ever given thither, nor is it to be expected before and until we can see for certain that our writing has been well understood, and the master's interest is to be advanced. The safe delivery of our letters sent under dates of 25 August and 3 September by the sloop De Valk and the patamar Achmet Kocherdie came to our particular pleasure on the 4th of this month from Your Honor's missive of the 18th of the said and most recently expired month of September; and although we do not wish to doubt our letters dispatched after date, nevertheless the copies of the 10th of the most mentioned and 1st of this month go alongside this, in order to serve as a guideline for your reports upon subsequent delivery and as time requires. 1281 From Persia under date 31 March 1741. On the day of receipt of Your Honor's missive, which we received just before the meeting with its contents, and upon opening was also found complete according to the register, after reading those writings and taking into consideration that which deserved reflection, the expenditures of the 2 months of July and August amounting together to m:s 1219:-:- or 5518. 1:8 were preliminarily approved by us, as it is presupposed that such was inevitable and also could not have been avoided, which in one year had to be spent on merchandise expenses to the amount of f 398: 14: -. Furthermore, after due consideration, the advance in salaries up to f 657:1:- or manr:s 1546.- was also accommodated, and for which everyone's account was debited according to custom, in accordance with the received valid receipt. Merchandise, of which Your Honor mentions that the batch obtained previously with the said vessel, together with the bar iron, was selling well, there was good hope that what has now been obtained would also change owners shortly in good returns, pointing out the gold and black peysas coins already in hand, together with the hope for the latter proceeds before the departure of De Valk, etc., are items that were read by us with pleasure, and therefore make us wish that Your Honor, after dispatching your letter, may have succeeded even better than expected in gaining honor in the lords and masters' interest, while Your Honor's requisition for bar iron as well as whatever else might be required in addition shall be complied with as far as possible at the first opportunity, provided that one does not appear too much opposed to daring to risk, in the old copper works, an equal compliance with the competitors and to level a moderate acceptance with them, for then the Honorable Company there shall by no means achieve that aforementioned advantage, and another shall in the meantime have gained too much ground; Your Honor shall therefore have to pay close attention whether that product cannot be negotiated through one or another merchant and the returns can be given a respectable appearance with the same, which brings an advantage, for otherwise, as said, Baucheer will not amount to much, as the price is too excessive at 12 mamaldies; therefore, consider what in this regard upon calculation is most advisable to do or not to do at this opportunity for the lords and masters' service. From Persia, under date 31 March 1741. as well as some of it still lying in dispute at Bassoura, so in this subject case, on this occasion, it has been written briefly to those ministers with the transmission of an extract of a requisition, in the trust that Your Honour, after reading both, will to the utmost of your ability also keep watch over what is required for a reasonable turnover, to the end of helping to change the prolonged lying-over of the linens as far as practicable and seeking means that focus everything beneficial towards their sale. Regarding the good promise concerning the namad in all respects, and now made concerning the refreshment days, we hope that a successful outcome will follow to provide us with satisfaction; and notwithstanding Your Honour's supposition that upon the arrival of fresh merchants it would not well be avoided to offer a small gift to the regents, we nevertheless wish that such may be the less the better, since the Honourable Company is indeed entirely and permanently deprived of whatever was given away, and it sometimes does not even achieve the actual objective for which Her Honours' ministers must essentially act in order not to be further deprived of friendship itself. Regarding the wheat and Your Honour's request as to how to proceed with the more than 30 lasts ready for shipment, we trust before the receipt of this, from our aforesaid letters in reply to Your Honour's queries, that our intention will have sufficiently appeared: that we dispatched the shallop to collect Your Honour's returns (having indeed not found reason to abandon hope that nothing more was to come in addition to the 20 lasts or 60000 lb already on hand at that time), and since that small vessel can now obtain 90000 lb along with the specie, and thus was not to be expected to be laden with nothing; so it would indeed cause much hesitation to have held it up contrary to this our order, and similarly it would not suit us if we left Your Honour's produce lying and employed the Valk for the Bassoura 180000 lb or 60 lasts according to the notice Your Honour gives of it resting there; since we might well establish for certain that then that grain, through the time required for this for two voyages, would only be expected to be received in loco very aged, infested with mites, and possibly half spoiled. Therefore, we shall hope for the best with respect to Your Honour's management in this troubled juncture of time; and as for the consignment of the 10 lasts to Bassoura, it seems to us, given the unprecedented accidents with the King's fleet and the present condition in which we find ourselves, that nothing certain can be boasted or relied upon with any foundation; nor likewise regarding Your Honour's accepted 340000 lb or 80 lasts over 6 months, considering that in the meantime these traversed lands can still be subjected to so much alteration by the back-and-forth roaming grandees of the realm with their troops, that one could obtain enough cause for hesitation before undertaking anything in which much delay resided with risk. Meanwhile, we are very sorry that we will only be able to come to the aid of the Bassoura ministers casually when the Company's ships might arrive near Baucheer, and that in such manner as will appear to Your Honour from the copy letter (of which the original will be enclosed and sent at the first opportunity) to the bookkeeper Mr Willem Slaars; further under that condition as we recently stated, and otherwise we know of no means to devise. Therefore we will rather remain confident of Your Honour that in this and all further important matters that might occur, you will exert yourself to the best of your ability. In this manner we have taken to heart what has happened to the bookkeeper Mr Danid Buskens, and it will likewise appear from the said copy together with the translation of what we have written to His Highness Mhamet Takkie Chan concerning that and other affairs; although we cannot see otherwise than that Your Honour, given that state of affairs and the satisfaction obtained thereafter, has properly upheld the Company's high esteem. However, it serves as guidance for the future, if contrary to hope reasons for complaints should again be given to Your Honour, not to pass by His Highness Smoem Werdie Chan, as he is the King's First Minister over the lower lands; and furthermore Your Honour must be prudent in all things as far as practicable. Among the enclosures we have caused some translations to be attached for Your Honour's speculation and guidance, to the end of having the knowledge and being able to give it upon the occasion of a necessary reply, according to the requirement of the time. It also remains to be seen how it will turn out with the promise in the extract daily journal of the competitors, since from the consequence already perceived regarding it nothing extraordinary promises to come. However, we shall not dwell upon that, but only in reply express hearty thanks for the wish of blessing on behalf of us all caused by the aforesaid removal, punishment, and deliverance, especially rendered by the signatories who thereby advanced their share and congratulate themselves further, which we now also collectively desire.

Honorable, pious, prudent. — After sending off our last letter on the day that we received Your Honour's short letter dated 11 October, which was 13 days later, Your Honour's further reports of 9 November on 25 ditto were again duly brought to us, and along with them, with the trade books, the packet of 1295 From Persia, dated 31 March 1741. Bassourase writings and the documents sent herewith concerning the completed financial year, and thus everything complete according to the registers received therewith, just as the same has been described in our present and herewith openly transmitted missive for the ministers there, with orders to act as prudently as is feasible in sending it over by vessels, because the Arakierse pirates at that corner let little slip by that their power can overpower in order to make booty; and therefore this serves for your information. The annexes received with Your Honour's first-mentioned letter we have taken into consideration at the session of primo November, and according to the received findings concerning the cargo brought to the coast per the sloop, it was found to have been delivered short thereon: 2½ per cento, roughly, or 309 lb out of 12256 lb powder sugar; 2½ per cento, strictly, or 298 lb out of 12000 lb sappanwood; 3⅓ per cento, roughly, or 1021 lb out of 30000 lb pepper, which is quite excessive in proportion to the distance from here to Boucheer, considering that with its receipt and shipping at this From Persia, dated 31 March 1741. place, all possible care was indeed taken, as done before, to prevent theft, and yet it was of no help. For the 63540 lb wheat amounting to m:s 83747 at ƒ3558. 19:— Your Honour has been credited, and on account of the reasons brought forward by Master Wischer, the short delivery made here of that grain to the amount of 1623 lb, or according to calculation 2 ¾ per cento strictly, has also been validated. In particular, the same visibly stems among other things from the miserable gunny bags that Your Honour bought for 1297 From Persia, dated 31 March 1741. its sacks; but if the same had been as opaque, tight, and good as the sample sack, nothing at all would have been spilled. In respect of the provisions made during the stay of the Valk there up to m:s 1068:- or ƒ 453: 18:—, but together with the 2 pieces of gerassen issued to the master making ƒ561:10:8:—its necessity having been considered, and that the master had also requested the firewood in writing—that expenditure has been validated under the assumption that it could not have been set at less, as far as the other expenses are actually concerned. As we have just this moment become aware that a native vessel is to set sail thither today, and that its nakhoda will go on board in an hour, we have seized this occasion in all haste to inform Your Honor that we have here, for the price of 8½ abbassis or 3: 13 4 florins per man of 82 lb, contracted for the Honorable Company 50 lasts, or 150,000 lb, of wheat of such quality as the sample enclosed herewith in a sealed box will show Your Honor, and to which we most kindly refer; with the polite request to forward the said sample, along with a copy of this letter, at the first opportunity together with Your Honor's writings to Gamron, so that Their Honors there may be served all the sooner with this report, whilst with special speed and referring to our previous letter, sent already on two different occasions and dated 25 July of the current year, we remain, in the most affectionate manner. The ship Middenrak having been dispatched from here toward Gamron on 8 August, and having duly received, on the 12th thereafter via the Company's courier Mohamed Ali as well as on the 14th of this month by a native trankey, Your Honor's particularly pleasant letters of 15 and 19 July last, some days have nevertheless elapsed before we could apply ourselves to answering the same; but now beginning therewith, we shall first inform Your Honor that their enclosures have reached us in full, and in addition, with much obligation, the samples of such wheat as Your Honor had contracted there for the Honorable Company; and since we have judged its quality to be sound, and likewise the prices with the incidental expenses falling thereon on both sides to be approximately equal with Your Honor, we have here contracted for the Honorable Company, following Your Honor's notification, further lasts in addition to those mentioned in our last letter dated 28 July last, and thus we have here in all a quantity of 60 lasts, or 180,000 lb, lying ready for shipment, on which Your Honor can then rely; but in case it is not possible for Your Honor to procure the remaining 40 lasts, or 120,000 lb, of wheat in full, please inform us thereof at the earliest opportunity, so that we may then still arrange to look out for the missing amount before it becomes dear here. Regarding this, I attest in all seriousness to the truth that frugality has always been, to the utmost of my ability, and will also henceforth faithfully be taken to heart, and to that end, in accordance with Your Honours' earnest recommendation, efforts and practices will be made to bring about some reduction to those cited entries as far as possible. But concerning the gifts, the Honourable Company will not well be able to avoid presenting each time, upon the arrival of new merchandise, a small floral offering and sample of sweets, etc., to the regents, although in this regard I likewise promise, as mentioned, to promote economy as much as feasible and within a man's power. Nor shall I in future make any more withdrawals from the ship's stores, but if anything is needed, request the same in advance from Your Honours and Worships, just as I shall also cancel the lease on the house rented at 36 mamudis per month as soon as it can be spared and will no longer be necessary for the storage of the merchandise. Concerning the main point of trade, I have the honour to inform Your Honours and Worships that the Honourable Company's merchandise previously brought with the sloop has already been collected in accordance with the previously designated cash sale, and the iron has also been sold for the old price at 3 mamudis, or 1 guilder, 5 stuivers, and 8 pennies, the maund of 6¼ lb. There is likewise still good hope of being able to raise the price of some other wares and yet achieve a quick sale, which would have been an entirely indubitable matter had Your Honours been able to provide me with somewhat more sweets and some Malacca tin, since those wares, alongside the spices, cloves, and nutmegs, are currently extraordinarily in demand. For this reason, I could also have wished that the Basra ministers, according to Your Honours' letter, had sent me a parcel of their remaining stocks, as they still exist there in a fine quantity. Regarding the return products, and giving priority among them to the copper pice coin, I most obediently serve to state that I shall use every effort to acquire as much of it as possible (although it is currently scarce to obtain), and after that the old copperware. From Persia under date 31 March 1741 observation may by your Honor's favor be deemed worthy for the reasons known therewith. Subsequently, there is another matter of importance to impart, but of an entirely different nature than related before; consisting of an insulting incident that befell the bookkeeper Busskens here inside the Honorable Company's residence just eleven hours before the sloop De Valk dropped her anchor in the outer roads, in the following manner: The assistant Huijbert van Poot having gone on board the sloop to fetch the Honorable Company's papers, in the meantime a prominent merchant named Hadje Seraff arrived inside this residence and at the broker Natta's, in order to weigh some iron that he had bought from me a few days prior; whereupon that heathen immediately sent for the scribe of Sheikh Maskoer to be present in order to collect the toll that the merchant must pay from it. Who having then also appeared, he came to ask me if he might proceed with the weighing; which being granted to him, and the bookkeeper Buffkens being ordered, in view of the absence of Van Poot, to deliver and register the same. In the meantime, the scribe of the said Sheikh had gone outside, but returning immediately, and the porters and everything being ready to weigh, he began to use insolence toward the porters, to curse, and to ask who had ordered them to come into this residence and work goods without his permission. Buffkens replied thereto, though in amicable terms, that he did not know that our workmen were obliged first to go and ask him for permission, that they would never do so either, but that it was enough if he was notified when we were ready to deliver goods. Whereupon that rogue took the floor again and said that he now needed the porters for his private service and did not want to weigh. Whereupon Buffkens added that he would not have them until our work was done. Whereupon, words at first rising a little high, that scribe then had the insolence (after he had fetched a stick from outside this residence) to beat the workmen, etc. Buffkens, unable to tolerate that affront in the Honorable Company's residence, and pointing out to him the privilege with which we were favored by His Majesty concerning freedom, this was, however, just pouring oil on the fire, so to speak; until finally Buffkens, protecting the porters, ordered him, while adding some abusive words, to leave the residence. Which he complied with, but a moment later, with his master Sheikh Maskoer (who had been sitting next to this house with Monsieur Salby along with the well-known Aga Abdalie), returning again, Sheikh Maskoer asked Busskens why he had cursed him. Busskens replied thereto that he had never thought of cursing him, but that he had cursed his servant because he had displayed unheard-of insolence in this residence, and requested him in amicable terms to sit down so that he might relate the incident to him. But having no ears for this, he left again for whence he had come, where having sat for a little while and being incited by the said Abdalie, a great enemy of the Honorable Company, he suddenly returned inside with an even thicker stick in his hand, wherewith he dealt Busskens a blow on his shoulder from behind. Having been seized upon this and thrown outside, this incident was made known to me, who keep my quarters on the other side of the house. Whereupon I, having calmly understood and well perceived everything, and also having deliberated very seriously with the Messieurs Busskens and Van Poot, decided that this affront merited a speedy redress, revenge, and satisfaction, and that the consequence was necessarily to let my complaints regarding this proceed to the newly appointed commander of the seaports, Mahomed Sackie Chan, as well as to the governor of Shiraz, Hattium Chan. I therefore sent for a Persian scribe and had everything properly prepared for that purpose, and resolved further to send the bookkeeper Busskens along in person. However, in the meantime, Sheikh Maskoer, noticing what was brewing, raised quite enough of a stir in order to ask my pardon for his committed offense. So that, to be brief, one day thereafter, through a visit of all the merchants together, I was persuaded to grant it to him in the afternoon upon his own request and confession of his wrongdoing, which the eldest of them publicly delivered in his name (while he himself, blushing red with eyes cast downward and without making a sound, remained seated in the gathering), thinking that the Honorable Company has received well-doubled satisfaction according to the nature of this country's character; and we also hope that this conduct of mine, considered by your Honor according to the weight of the case, will also be approved.

Which I request may be favorably validated and also approved by your Honors; that I have shipped that grain and provisions since they were to be obtained at a reasonable price of mann:s 2 or ƒ—:17:— each, to preserve them from spoiling. But concerning the shipment of cash peijsas and European ducats, I felt a little uneasy on this occasion and found it best to hold them until a further opportunity with that small vessel. And regarding the remaining wheat still resting here, I request your Honors' further orders whether I shall dispose of it again, as there is a chance to do so without loss, or keep holding it. Persia, dated 31 March 1741. [illegible] on the grounds that after transacting the ship's affairs, he intended to come hither in person. Having subsequently on the very same day, as the chaloup de Valk stood ready to haul round at Hallila in order to take in there one Mir Asmed, who had been sent thither from the Eerd: deemed it necessary to send to the bookkeeper Buffkens an extract from Your Honours' above-mentioned revered letters, along with a ditto of the contract made by Your Honours regarding the Company's ships lent for the service of the Crown, and therewith to recommend that upon coming to His Highness, he should bring it about that the said vessel, in case of a longer detention there, may also be included in the latter. Furthermore, on the 27th of the often-mentioned month of October, by the Company's lapper Mhamed Alie, were also duly delivered to me Your Honours' and Your Honours' much-honoured missive dated 15 days previously, with its enclosures in agreement according to the register, and among them a packet of writings, under cachet volant, for the ministers at Bassoura, which per first Persia, dated 31 March 1741. per first occasion is to be dispatched thither, just as in the meantime the previously received writings for that place have already been sent, as appears from the accompanying covering letters, a copy of which is enclosed herewith, to which I also beg leave to refer. Passing on, further, to a respectful reply to the above-mentioned respected letters, I first of all render my humble thanks for the lately passed monthly and yearly specifications, cleared pay, and occurred shortweights, as well as that Your Honours have been pleased favourably to take to heart the misfortune that befell the bookkeeper Buffkens, and to approve my proceedings in that case. Further, I have the honour most respectfully to present to Your Honours herewith the single copies of the recently closed trade books of this commission (which I very humbly request may be copied over there for Batavia, because in loco, due to the extraordinary pressing amount of work and the departure of Persia, dated 31 March 1741. of the bookkeeper Monsr. From Persia, dated 31 March 1741. that nation could gain an advantage thereby, but rather the opposite, and on which account I am perforce obliged to watch how the cat jumps for some time yet; however, should it please Your Honours to grant me some latitude regarding this important point, namely to proceed according to the condition of the market, one might sometimes promise oneself a reasonable success herewith. Therefore, for Your Honours' speculation, three different prices are compared below against that at Castij of 12 mamoodies 39/20 the maund of 6¾ lb., thus showing that against the price of 11 mamoodies it would differ 10 1/1 per cent, against 11¼ mamoodies 8 per cent, and against 11½ mamoodies 5 1/23 per cent in our favour, regarding which I most humbly implore Your Honours' consideration. And as regards further the exchange of the golden European ducats at 18 mamoodies each, the same come in daily in small parcels, and I do not doubt but that upon the first occasion a fine quantity thereof can be dispatched to Your Honours. Furthermore, I have the honour to present herewith submissively to Your Right Worshipful Honour and Your Honours a memorandum of gifts, both on the occasion of the sloop's arrival to the town governors, as well as upon the congratulations of the proxy of the sardar Mhamed Backerbeecq on his arrival in loco, as well as delivered to the bearer of Your Honours' above-mentioned letter, named the Sjappaerabasbeecq, amounting together to 173 guilders 9 stivers 8 pennings cost price and 385 guilders 82 stivers selling price, with an earnest request that the same may be deemed worthy of Your Honours' favourable approval, as frugality has been observed in this regard with a sparing hand to the utmost of my ability. Furthermore, I offer my heartfelt thanks for the translations in kind recently sent, as well as for Your Right Worshipful Honour's letter written to the vice-admiral of the Persians, Mhamed Tackie Chan, and the Sultan Alie Beecq, which, whenever those gentlemen might casually arrive here with the Company's vessels, I shall not fail to hand over and furthermore with the utmost deliberation endeavour to effect that one of the said vessels may be dispatched to Bassoura, upon which Your Honours may be pleased to rest assured.
