1379 From Persia, dated 31 March 1741. 198 pieces of sjacklassen at 40 mamudis each or 17:5:- guilders, and 91 small chintz spreads at 42 each, 17:17:- 160 pieces of dark blue salempores at 21½ each, 9:2:12 2 pieces of red silk at 34 each, 14:9:- 2 pieces of coetenijs at 20 grains each, 3:10:- 2 pieces of the same, thopje, at 24 each, 10:4:- 160 pieces of mixed bleached salempores at 16 each, 7:16:- in total amounting to 1063 mamudis 5 or 15209:7:8 guilders. Added to which the remaining cash balance as of the last day of August of last year, according to the books, amounting to 1005:33½ mamudis or 42726:14:12 guilders. Thus it appears that the same today amounts to a total of 206908½ mamudis or 87936:2:4 guilders. And although some of these above-mentioned entries, to wit: fine unbleached linens, raw guinees, salempores, Japanese camphor, Java coffee beans, presently have no demand here at all, I shall nevertheless make every effort within human power to dispose of them as soon as possible, and thus before they become subject to decay; as I also, with that intention, on the 11th of this month via the Basra route, have written to the respective ministers at Isfahan in reply to their Honours' letter dated 17 December of last year, as Your Honours will be able to see further from the copy accompanying this, if so desired, and to which I beg to refer. Persia under date 31 March 1741 Having learned more from that side. Furthermore, it has appeared to my joy from those respected letters that Your Honours have passed in a favorable manner the shortweights discovered upon the delivery ashore of the Honorable Company's merchandise recently brought by the sloop De Valk; and as regards Your Honours' honored order in this respect to see to it in the future that better care is taken so that in the delivery ashore, storage, and salvage of the goods nothing falls short, I shall always attend to this to the best of my ability, just as I do not know otherwise than that this has always occurred in proportion to the place and circumstances, and upon the discovery of damaged wares I shall likewise observe Your Honours' respected order so that in the future, if need be, it can always serve as proof through declarations that there was nothing to be said against the stowage, and subsequently offering my very humble gratitude for crediting this commission with Persia under date 31 March 1741 the wheat recently sent over up to 8374 mamudis or 3558 guilders and 19 stuivers, it having been, however, very distressing to me to learn that a shortweight of 1643 pounds or 2 3/5 percent was discovered thereon at your end, and that Your Honours presume this to stem from the bad condition of the gunny bags, wherefore I promise in the future to look after that as well to the best of my abilities; meanwhile, I feel my obligation for the validation of the supplies to the said vessel, as well as joy that the trade booklets sent over were found to agree with the general ledgers, and that furthermore the goods handed over as gifts to the local grandees and city regents were passed, together with the additional charges in the most recently closed financial year, and which I heartily wish together with Your Honours may henceforth be in a state rather to be diminished considerably than to be increased, and towards which, as well as towards the increase of the profits, I dutifully promise to exert all my strength to attain Persia under date 31 March 1741 greater satisfaction and to achieve the salutary purpose of this commission, placing therein my greatest glory. Furthermore, the head office has, according to Your Honours' notification, been debited for 880 mamudis, less the traveling and dispatch expenses to the amount of 320 mamudis, together 600 mamudis, being the amount given along to the bookkeeper Kuskens; while I also render my dutiful thanks for the favorable accommodation regarding the loan made for the careening service of the sloop De Valk, and the having the commission booklets drawn up for Batavia. Regarding the trade, it has to my regret been noted that the recent increase in the prices of powdered sugar and spelter had not pleased Your Honours well, wherefore I also promise in this respect to ensure in the future, so far as it is at all feasible, that in loco no goods shall be sold for less than at your end, although the spelter Persia under date 31 March 1741 will then slip out of hand poorly here, as it is currently being sold by the English at 9 mamudis or 3 guilders, 16 stuivers, and 8 pence the maund of 6 3/4 pounds, or rather the maund of 6 pounds at 8 mamudis or 3 guilders and 8 stuivers. I furthermore very humbly request excuse for not having better understood Your Honours' previous writings concerning that mineral, while I subsequently, for greater convenience, shall henceforth always calculate in the outgoing letters and price currents the price of the shortest maund at 6 pounds net. Item, to refrain henceforth from making such proposals whereby the burdens of the commission would come to increase or in some respects the profits and advantages to decrease, but much rather to manage in a somewhat restricted manner for the time being, until such time and while it shall please their High Noble and Stern Right Honorables, the High Indian Government at Batavia, to permit a permanent establishment or domicile here and to send merchandise annually for this commission expressly to Your Right Honorables and Your Honours, and whereby I hope in time that the growth of the profits will diminish what otherwise seems to be a great burden of expenses. Regarding the wheat, I have the honor to communicate to Your Honours that the small lot of 10 lasts, which remained lying here upon the departure of the sloop, has been further augmented by me with a purchase of 15000 pounds or 5 lasts, for the reason that upon Your Honours' letters I had no doubt but that the ship Middenrak would soon be able to appear here to take in those wares; however, this having now failed, I have had them placed and attended to in such a manner that neither moisture nor any spoilage is to be feared therein, and should it now please Your Honours to requisition more of it, satisfaction will thus be possible in new crop, and that at a much more reasonable price than that grain has fetched this year, or rather by all thoughts for 10 mamudis or 4 guilders and 5 stuivers the maund of 108 pounds.

From Persia, dated 31 March 1741. pounds. — Furthermore, I express my obliged gratitude for Your Honors' and Your favorable promise to have me supplied again with fresh goods at the first opportunity, hoping therefore that the Batavian ships have already arrived there and Your Honors have been enabled to satisfy this, among which I then request to receive: 1: suckel of mace; as the remainder thereof was traded while writing this. Regarding the city rulers and native grandees residing here, I cannot refrain from informing Your Honorable Honors and Your Honors that I daily receive uncommon courtesies and civilities from them, and all this by order and at the written instruction of His Highness the General Lissemis Imaumwerdie Chan, having on the 18th of this month, together with the English Captain Grand, again been very honorably entertained for an entire day at lunch and dinner by His Excellency Mhamet Backer Blecq, and on the 28th thereafter likewise in the castle of Handria 1391 From Persia, dated 31 March 1741. Ahadria by the Naib of the stifthoen Kossain Chan Beecq, and although such visits, as Your Honors can very well understand, are considerably troublesome for me, their courteous invitation could nevertheless, in my humble opinion, not well be refused, on which account I therefore also hope for Your Honors' much-esteemed approval; as well as for the arrangement that on 22 November last, upon his manifold entreaties, I advanced on loan to Sheikh Moskorer a small sum of 48 thomans or f 2040:-, against which I have received a bond on the thallen, so that it involves not the least peril, on which Your Honors may please be reassured.
