From Persia under date ultimo March 1781 Persian translation Letter written by the honorable respected Mr. Carel Coenaad, senior merchant and director of this Persian directorship, to Shiraz, to the Sardar of the Lowlands, His Highness Imam Verdi Khan, dated 25 September 1740, and dispatched thither on the same day by two shappars of that lord. After preceding high compliments and honorary titles. In the spirit of pure, sincere, and unadulterated friendship, I write this to make known that in pleasant times I have duly received Your Highness's 3 letters, and from them it has also appeared, to the heartfelt joy of my eyes, that Your Highness is in good health, constantly wishing that God may be pleased to multiply Your Highness's years and blessings. Concerning Your Highness's writing regarding the loan of the ships of the High and Mighty Dutch Company, let it serve to inform you that as soon as the news regarding the capture of the King's ships was learned here, His Excellency Mohammad Bagher visited me in person to request those vessels for the service of the Crown. And notwithstanding that the orders given to me by the superiors of the High and Mighty Dutch Company are that I must send those vessels toward Batavia as soon as possible, and also because a ship from its voyage arrived here at the very same time that the aforementioned news was received, and the other vessel as well as the first were provided with water, firewood, and other goods necessary for an expedition, I have nevertheless, out of the pure friendship that has always been maintained between the superiors of the High and Mighty Dutch Company, His Majesty, Your Highness, and myself, lent the aforementioned 2 ships to His Excellency Mohammad Bagher Beg for the service of the Crown, just as he then departed with them along with his men. But on account of a lack of water, etc., as already mentioned, both of those vessels returned yesterday with the aforementioned Naib Mohammad Bagher Beg, with 2 masts, alongside the further trankies, dinghies, and other craft that were found at Larak and elsewhere, which I believe will already have been made known to Your Highness. In this time, when His Highness the Admiral Mohammad Taqi Khan arrived here, I paid him a visit, and the loan of the ships was discussed at length. And since it has already been said that the vessels are not provided with water or firewood, and no one knows where that rabble of Arabs has taken the King's ships, it is therefore an entirely impossible matter. On the other hand, I am very much afraid that my High and Mighty superiors will take it extremely amiss of me if I do not observe their formidable orders regarding the dispatch of those ships to Batavia. Yet I shall nevertheless, as far as possible, for the sake of the pure and sincere friendship that has always been maintained between His Majesty, our High and Mighty superiors, Your Highness, and myself, support His Highness Mohammad Taqi Khan after due deliberation, while for the rest I am prepared to assist and support him in all possible services for the Crown. To my particular joy, Your Highness's worthy letter, written on the 27th of the month of Jumada al-Thani of the year 1153, corresponding to 19 September 1740, was delivered to me at a favorable hour, from which, to the relief of my sight, Your Highness's good health fully appeared, constantly praying to God that He may multiply Your Excellency's years. Concerning the writing regarding the loan of the ships of the High and Mighty Dutch Company to His Highness Taqi Khan, I have made known what is necessary to Your Excellency by a letter dispatched with the shappar Qalb Ali Beg, a copy of which is enclosed herewith. Yesterday, the 6th of the month of Rajab al-Murajjab of the aforementioned year, His Highness the Sea Lord, Your Highness's dispenser, and the regents residing here were with me, and the necessity of lending the ships was discussed. I do not doubt that the further proceedings concerning this will have already been made known to Your Highness by the aforementioned Admiral, since, for the sake of the pure and sincere friendship that is constantly maintained between His Majesty, our High and Mighty superiors, Your Excellency, and myself, I have granted the request to lend those vessels, so that the repeatedly mentioned His Highness Taqi Khan may depart with his men in order to carry out what is possible. In the way of sincere and unadulterated friendship, I make known to Your Highness that via the chappar Calbalie Beeca I have written the necessary reply to Your Highness's received letters, which I also hope will have reached Your Highness long before the presentation of this letter. Indeed, such that some European servants of the High Mighty Dutch Company lost their lives and some were severely wounded, while the ships were so damaged in their masts, topmasts, ropes, and what not, that completely helpless and unfit for further defense, they drifted away from their adversaries due to a strong wind that arose at nightfall, and arrived at Bendher Congo. And because many of the said vessels were disabled on all sides and shot through because they had not been able to withstand the force of the enemy's artillery, From Persia under date of the last day of March 1741 they finally returned to Gamron in order to be repaired as much as possible. During this time, His Highness Mahamed Backer Caap, according to orders received from His Highness the Serdaar Iman Werdie Chan, made known to me that the troops at Sulphaar were in lack of provisions, powder, and lead, and that such therefore ought to be forwarded to them in whatever manner possible. From Persia under date of the last of March 1741 and Administrator of this Persian Directorate to the Sardar of the lower regions, His Highness Iman Werdie Chan at Bendher Congo, also on the 6th of December dispatched thither by the Company's Chief Courier, Hassan Rabie. After preceding compliments and titles of honor. Out of pure and sincere friendship, I write this, that a few days ago the shatier bashi Hassan Rabie, having been sent to the Minab in order to ascertain whether any monies were being received there or not, the same upon his return related that as yet nothing had come in, wherefore the muhassil Mahmed Tackje Beeg, who had been dispatched thither by His Excellency Mahmed Backer Beek to obtain the monies, also returned empty-handed, so that all the effort which His Excellency Mahmed Backer Beek applied to the aforesaid end is without any benefit. And as I find that it turns out in such a manner, I have consequently called back toward Gamron the servants of the High and Mighty Dutch Company previously dispatched thither, who are to arrive within 2 or 3 days. I always rest my hope upon Your Highness's favor, on account of which I then request that Your Highness will make such arrangements that those monies may finally be delivered into my hands, so that I may not become further ashamed over this before my High and Mighty masters, as such has already been caused thereby many times. A few days before them, a gallivat of His Majesty having arrived here from Julphaar, a letter was brought with the same by Mahmed Beek, Governor of that place, regarding the lack of provisions which the people there suffered, and likewise the men assigned to that vessel informed us that on both the outward and return journey they had detected no enemies; for which reasons His Highness Mahmed Taekje Chan brought it to my knowledge and at the same time requested that the vessels of the High and Mighty Dutch Company might sail thither with some vessels of His Majesty which he wished to dispatch with the necessary supplies for that place. Whereupon I gave His said Highness in reply that if he were secure in all matters, then the vessels, being fully laden with victuals, powder, and lead, could easily be dispatched under convoy of 2 gallivats; upon which the Sea Admiral replied in turn: I do not have much to object against that, but if I were to send those vessels with the aforementioned alone, and the same were to fall into the enemy's hands (which God forbid), it would be completely disagreeable and inexcusable for me. Wherefore I then weighed everything with the council, and on account of the aforementioned news decided, out of pure and sincere friendship, to send the battels of the High and Mighty Dutch Company to convoy the aforementioned vessels to Julphaar, so that the enemies should do them no harm and the provisions can be properly transported thither.
