From Persia under date of the last day of March 1741. Writings with the Isfahan residents since three years past regarding the present prices compared with those of the years 1683 and 1715 do not seem profitable to undertake, even if one had all freedom, aside from and beyond the fact that the considerable overweight noted in those of former times—which generally cannot now be counted upon, but one would have to be satisfied with a net weight. Therefore, after mature deliberation, it was judged to be justifiable to await the small parcels of the Isfahan residents with their considerations before dispatching what is due, and then, according to our humble capacity, to aim for the very best for our noble paymasters, if at all possible, as well as to fulfill the repeated and highly venerated intentions of Her Right Honourable and High Indias Government, which equalizes with the aforesaid Her High Excellencies. The comparison of the ordinary and daily used weights against the standard weight kept here at this office was properly carried out by the provisional fiscal and specially appointed judicial council members, in accordance with the printed order. Likewise, a written report having been rendered in this regard, space is granted here for the verification of what is stated above. Report rendered and respectfully delivered to the Honourable Mr. Carel Coenaad, Senior Merchant and Commander of this Persian directorate, together with the Council. Commanding Sir and Honourable Gentlemen, In obedient compliance with Your Honours' esteemed order, we, the undersigned judicial commissioners, betook ourselves to the Company's warehouse, and there, in the presence of the provisional fiscal Willem Allart van Jongstal, compared the weights kept at this office upon the scales against the standard weight sent hither by Her High Excellencies from Batavia per the ship Valckenesse, and found them to agree, the same consisting of 144 pieces at 50 lb each. Wherewith, Honourable Commanding Sir and Honourable Gentlemen, we hope to have fulfilled this our commission to satisfaction, on which account we take the liberty of signing ourselves, Your Honours' humble and faithful servants, signed F. de Witte and G. S. Sas; in the center, In my presence, signed W. A. van Jongstal; in the margin, Gamron, the 3rd of September 1740; beside the heading, Exhibited in the Council of Policy at Gamron the 5th of October 1740, signed E. de Poorter, provisional secretary. Furthermore, upon written request and good likelihood of his competence, as well as out of consideration of the expensive times locally, Jan Clevius of Batavia, engaged for a soldier in the year 1737 on a 5-year contract at 9 guilders per month, was advanced to 16 guilders per month in order to serve out his current contract therewith. Jan Christoffel Sakie of Oosthausen, provisional house carpenter, who arrived in India in the year 1739 with the Coxhorn as an ordinary seaman at 7 guilders per month, was, upon his urgent request, as well as out of consideration of the service he presently performs, promoted on his current contract to 13 guilders. Likewise, Pieter Roeloffz of Hoezum, provisional mason, who arrived in 1738 per the Petronella Alida at the Cape, subsequently per the Parel in the year 1739 in India, as well as on the 25th of February of the current year per the Steenhoven as a sailor at 9 guilders per month locally, and because he has already given reasonable satisfaction for four months in the first-mentioned post, is now confirmed therein and granted an increase in pay to 14 guilders per month, in order to serve out his current contract for that amount. All nevertheless subject to the highly respected approval of the well-mentioned Her High Excellencies, the strict and Right Honourable Gentlemen of the High Indias Government at Batavia, into whose benevolent approval we also request to be favored regarding the further business conducted herein. Thus done, resolved, and determined in the office at Gamron, on the day, month, and year aforesaid. Was signed Carel Coenaad, Clement, De Haar, W. Tuesday, the 6th of September in the year 1740, in the evening at the striking of 9 o'clock. All present except the first and last signatories of this document. Upon the friendly invitation of the provisional council member and also trade bookkeeper of this office, Mr. Simon Clement, the members still present appeared at the ordered meeting place, took their seats, and the holy prayer for God's assistance having been offered, it was set forth by the said gentleman with very earnest and pertinent expressions relating to the matter how, according to the general rumor, the Arab seamen of His Majesty had rebelled, murdered the sea admiral Mir Ali Khan along with 460 to 470 Persian soldiers, and after the remaining warriors, astonished by such an event, had saved themselves by flight and leaping overboard, they had taken the said vessels along with all the craft into their disposal; that the naib of His Majesty, Mohammad Taqi Beg, had confirmed the fatal news this morning by a letter to His Right Honour and had related everything in greater detail, as the gentleman members would further learn from the translation thereof, which was simultaneously submitted for exhibition. From Persia, dated the last of March 1741. In the way of pure and sincere friendship, I write this: that whereas previously the order was given to the former sea-admiral Mir Ali Khan to take the ships and vessels of His Majesty and depart with them to Bandar, during the time those vessels lay at anchor there, the vessel crews colluded with a certain Sheikh Rahma, whose vessel had been seized. Together they conspired, surprised the King's fleet, killed him, and, according to a report received, also took away the batelas such as Fath-i Shahi and two others. This news having been brought here for certain, and because the Captains of the High and Mighty Dutch Company and their other gentlemen have always been ready and willing to render services to this Crown and have not failed in the least, and especially his Excellency has endeavored in all respects to do so, I do not doubt that your Excellency will not wish to diminish the same now, but to lend me two ships of the High and Mighty Dutch Company currently riding at anchor in this roadstead, in order to counter the aforementioned well-known enterprise by the cursed Arab rabble, as this is most necessary for the service of His Majesty, so that I and my men may be placed aboard them and steer towards Larak as well as Qeshm, in order that by God's favor, the good fortune of the King's person, and the aid of the High and Mighty Dutch Company, those aforementioned rebellious scoundrels may be overtaken and the ships delivered back into the hands of that monarch. If through God's blessing this undertaking succeeds, it will not only serve to the satisfaction of the King, but also to the brightening of your Excellency's countenance, the aggrandizement of the High and Mighty Dutch Company, and the renown of its servants, and it will also not a little increase His Majesty's favor toward the Honorable Company and your Excellency. Whereupon I shall navigate with them to Larak, but finding nothing there, to Kung, and if that also be in vain, to Bandar Kung, where the rebels' actual dwelling place is, in order, if it pleases God, to recover the ships of His Majesty. However, as that ruler was still not satisfied with this, fearing that when news of this incident reaches His Persian Majesty (who according to rumors is in Little Tartary), he might well lose his head, even though it was through no fault of his own, he appeared this morning at eleven o'clock very unexpectedly at the Company's lodge on a visit, accompanied by a chapar of His Highness the generalissimo of these lower lands, Imamverdi Khan, named Hossein Khan Beg, with a very pressing and at the same time urgent request for the loan of the two ships lying anchored here in the roadstead, Het Slot Cronenburg and Middenrak (which only returned from Basra yesterday evening). The said Baqir Beg, together with the aforementioned chapar, addressed the Heer Secunde himself in the Persian language and very emphatically presented the distress in which they found themselves, requesting that we might be pleased to consider of what grave consequence this enterprise could become if the means to crush this cursed plan were not smothered, as it were, in its infancy. For at present they were not yet joined together, nor agreed upon the division of the spoils, and were devoid of powder, shot, and other ammunition of war (in the opinion of the said ruler), and therefore still powerless and without a leader, lying anchored at the islands of Larak according to reports. For if time for deliberation and consultation were granted to them, and if they were permitted to provision themselves with everything and gain sea-room, then it might well happen that all navigation in this Persian Gulf would be obstructed and made unsafe, since their power would grow daily and increase with capable Arab vessels. Thus they would also take Kung, as well as Bahrain, and could wrest these along with all other Arab and adjacent coastal places from the King. Furthermore, that nation, being by nature very fickle, thievish, and mutinous, would all rebel, and thus bring a very great detriment to the realm and to merchants in general. However, all these misfortunes could be prevented by the loan of our ships for the transport of some Persian soldiers to the islands of Qeshm and Larak, the ships recovered, and deemed as good as presented as a gift to His Persian Majesty (whereas otherwise they were considered lost to him). For he held it certain that the Arabs, at the sight of the Dutch flag, would be terrified, seek to save themselves by flight, and abandon the ships currently drifting in helplessness. From Persia under date ultimate March 1741 for the Dutch nation in general by that monarch would be given; likewise that great prerogatives and privileges were to follow out of gratitude, seeing that thereby the loyalty and unadulterated friendship, help, and assistance of the Netherlanders could shine and be displayed before that monarch; and moreover that this weighty service would dig up and bring to mind all other rendered Crown services, although far surpassing all of the same, and would be esteemed so highly by His Majesty as if we had brought the whole of India and Turkey to bow beneath the yoke of his obedience; that otherwise such an extraordinary and bloody affront inflicted upon this second Alexander by a band of crude Arab pirates through the murder of the sea admiral and Persian soldiers, likewise the abandonment of his naval army, would embitter him and make him very angry, as well as cause him to take firm vengeance, from which you would also not remain exempt if the Crown were not now assisted with all might, but the possible help were refused and thus abandoned under all kinds of frivolous pretexts, since no other ships than ours lay here in the roads; therefore it was dutiful that you, as guest-friends, also lent a helping hand in this delicate matter, for at present no assistance could be requested, hoped for, or obtained from the English or French; that he therefore requested that all the above might be ripely considered by him, the Second, whereupon he hoped that he would indeed obtain a favorable apostil, etc. Furthermore the said gentleman Clement disclosed that he in person had presented to him, Backer Beek, firstly: The absence and stay in the village of Ormund, situated about 3½ miles from here, of His Honorable Worship, and that consequently it was an absolute impossibility that he, being only the Second, could or dared to take upon himself such weighty matters of state without first having written about it to His Honorable Worship and spoken and consulted with the other gentlemen of the Council as to what was possible to be done, as this could become a matter of greater consequence than he, the Naib, might perhaps imagine. Likewise that they, if they had any lack of war munitions, powder, bullets, hand grenades, scrap shot, or muskets, could report the same, whereupon they would be accommodated therewith. This reading having been found correct and clear, an authentic copy thereof was handed to the merchant and linguistic bookkeeper Slaars, so that he may make use of it when time and occasion require. After which, His Honor the Acting Director and the Provisional Secretary De Poorter having been properly informed of this decision taken by us and the reasons for it, His Honor the Acting Director and the said Secretary joined the other members during the drafting hereof and fully approved their Honors' actions. Therefore, it was agreed and executed to undertake this performed expedition with unanimity; only in the instructions already issued some alterations were made by His Honor the Acting Director, as can further be seen in the Instruction Book of this trading post, which altered document was also, during the drafting hereof, in accordance with the honored order of His Honor the Acting Director, sent after the ship’s crews on the 9th of this month via an indigenous commissary vessel into the hands of the Company's interpreter Ibrahim Sahid, because the said vessels had weighed their anchors and set sail between the 7th and 8th of this month. From Persia under date the last of March 1741 so that His Honour had to regard and look upon them as enemies of our state as well as of the realm, which was answered by the undersigned (acting as linguist and in these affairs) with civility, by order and as previously indicated in Dutch by His Honour, namely that His Honour and the other gentlemen could as yet give no reply thereto, because the ships had been in the service of the King and had only now arrived at this roadstead, and one was therefore still unaware of what the condition of those vessels was; and that for this reason the ship's officers had been ordered to depart for their vessels to carry out an exact inspection and immediately to make known the condition of their vessels and how they were found; that after receipt of the report they would not fail to inform His Highness of the same. Whereupon His Highness replied: "What! Those vessels have already been here at the roadstead for three days, and does the Captain not know that yet?" From Persia under date ultimo March 1741 Arab had committed against this realm would not only be forgiven and no harm or injury done to him or any of his people, but that in addition he would be favored with a magnificent robe of honor and the Kalantarship of Jeseret draes Kissem, following the office which he served before his rebellion, but that in default or non-appearance he had bound himself and sworn in the holy presence of Jesus Christ to pursue the said sheikh with the aforementioned ships and vessels upon the arrival of his batels and bring him back, even though he sought a hiding place for himself in the Indian seas or at the other end of the world, etc. Just as then this Englishman, in order to give even greater evidence of helpfulness to this realm, has taken it upon himself to equip one of the two barkentines brought back here by our batels on the 23rd of this month with ammunition of war, likewise to provide it with men, artillery, powder, lead, etc., and to have it made ready to sail, to the end that upon the departure of our keels the said barkentine, combined under the English flag, would also be sent along. Just as then this Briton began effectively to fulfill his made promise, as his Honor was firmly informed, by taking his small cannons, up to twenty in number, with which the ordinary salute is customary to be given, away from before his lodge and having them placed on the said barkentine, just as already some native soldiers under the supervision of the European gunner of that nation from his garrison were stationed on that little keel for the aforementioned purpose, just as we, for even more convincing evidence of the truth, during the drafting of this, saw the English flag waving from that small craft. From Persia, dated the last day of March 1741. Whereas recently Rahma bin Jaber, together with the other Arabs of Huwala, unexpectedly killed the former naval admiral, my Lord Ali Khan, and captured the King's ships, with which they fled; and whereas I, slave of the King, arrived some days ago at Bandar Abbas, through which some Royal vessels which that accursed rabble had left behind were prepared; item, the ships of the High and Mighty Dutch Company were granted by the Captain and the further Council upon my urgent request, to the end that, combined with the King's vessels, under God's blessing and the supreme fortune of His Majesty, we may pursue that accursed and unworthy rabble, so as to recover the King's stolen ships from them through God's blessing; yet, since the Captain and his notables have requested that I, slave of the King, should give them some assurances, it is for that reason that I write this following contract: First, that if the two ships of the High and Mighty Dutch Company that depart with me should suffer any damage or other misfortune in a battle (which God forbid), such shall be for the account of the King. Secondly, if it should happen that, upon overtaking the King's stolen vessels which are in the hands of the said accursed thieving rabble, the same are set on fire or sunk by cannon fire during the battle, or any other damage should be inflicted upon them, the Captain and the other servants of the Honourable Company shall not be held liable for it, nor shall they suffer any molestation. Thirdly, that if—which I hope God will ordain otherwise—His Majesty's ships are not seen or engaged by us around the region of Bahrain, Bushehr, Nakhilu, and further places lying thereabout, the ships of the High and Mighty Dutch Company shall not be taken to any other places. Fourthly, on the said two Company ships, no one else shall be placed for transport other than the mace-bearers, saber-bearers, attendants, and servants, but no soldiers. Fifthly, in case of an attack, none of my people, whoever he may be, shall interfere therewith, but they shall let the Europeans attack in their own manner, in order to prevent all confusion thereby and not to cause them distress. These few rules were written and granted in the form of a contract on the 6th of the month Rajab al-Murajjab of the year 1153, or according to our style the 27th of September 1740. Below stands the seal of His Highness the Naval Admiral Muhammad Taqi Khan Mashhadi, pressed in black ink. Item, because of the weakness of our ships, there shall be placed from our present garrison onto the first-mentioned vessel 1 sergeant and 10 privates, along with 1 surgeon's mate, and onto the last-mentioned vessel 1 corporal and 8 privates, as they can be spared here and are most urgently needed on the ships. From Persia under date the last of March 1741 having run aground, we were compelled to set out a kedge anchor in order by this means to get afloat again, but having wound back home half a cable-length of the two that were fastened to the kedge, the same broke; although the kedge was well provided with a good buoy and buoy-rope, the same was kept under by the severe storms, so that the kedge then lay entirely hidden; but on the 23rd of the same month we made our utmost endeavor to fish up both the kedge and the other half cable-length which had remained attached to the kedge, but everything that was attempted was in vain, so that we have never seen either the kedge or the cable again; which we declare to be the sincere truth and remain willing, if necessary, to confirm further; thus done and passed on the Company's ship 't Slot Croonenburg on the 23rd of September 1740; signed C: Fredriksz, B: Molenaar, W: v: der Vooren, signed with a small cross beside which was written: this is the mark of L: Hendriksz, I: Weesel; in the margin: present before me, signed A: Hilkes. The skipper of the Slot Croonenburg, Hendrik Gerritsz, having found himself aggrieved on account of the tare of 27 lb per canasser demanded from him here, had for that reason requested of his Honour that he might be permitted, in the presence and attendance of such persons as should be nominated for that purpose, to have some of the canassers brought by him dumped out immediately and tared in his presence for peace of mind, so that upon inquiry and arrival at Batavia he would be able to give an untroubled testimony of the truth thereof if questioned or called to account about it. From Persia under date Ultimo March 1741 Continually beats upon it on both sides and is entirely buried in the sand. The parapets under the windows, stairs, and descents, as well through the firing of many unavoidable salutes as the salty vapors of the seawater, have become devoid of lime and thus defective, as have the embrasures on the bastions, the greater part of which likewise need to be plastered. As likewise must necessarily be done to the Company's horse stable, the point of which also requires some repair, as does the floor in front of all the mangers, because through the constant kicking and stepping of the horses etcetera, the same has become entirely broken to pieces and filled with large hollows and holes. The plastering of the walls inside this lodge, both inside and outside the residences, item the pillars, because through the sharp air and vehement heat of the sun they bulge out and fall off almost everywhere, also require repair, as does the gallery below on both sides of the lodge in front of the rooms, which are found to be mostly full of large pits and holes. Furthermore, subject to your Honors' wise judgment, it is also highly necessary, to eliminate the annual expenses for mats etcetera which are otherwise customarily erected in front of the residences of the sergeants, the hospital, and that of the gunner and others to avoid this horribly strong air and sunshine, to have a lean-to roof of planks and beams constructed in the same manner as was effected in the past financial year on the west and east sides within this fortress. Further, there are also some slight defects in the kitchens etcetera, which do not merit a place here, that have been noticed by us upon close inspection to require some refurbishment and are annually unavoidable. On the small garden of Naibang, some necessary repairs were likewise required, since the front side-wall of the same, through old age and heavy wind, has been entirely blown down and its foundation has sunken; it must therefore be rebuilt de novo from the ground up. Item the talars below and above the bastion, the water cisterns and their conduits, as well as in the rooms and front gate, also require some necessary refurbishment for preservation and to prevent greater decay and expenses.
