Furthermore, consideration having also been given to the petition submitted by the first sworn clerk and secretary of the honorable Court of Justice, Willem Hoeffman of Hattem, who arrived in India Anno 1738 per the ship Hogersmilde as an ordinary seaman at 8 guilders for the Amsterdam chamber, and was subsequently in Anno 1740, under his current contract, promoted to junior assistant at 16 guilders, requesting to be increased in salary due to expiration of his term; it is deemed proper, in consideration of his duties, which he has already performed for a year to satisfaction, to promote him to bookkeeper with a salary of thirty guilders per month, in order to enter into a new three-year contract for the same.

Surat under date 12 April 1743 From to serve, as well as the junior assistant Carel Hen of Amsterdam, anno 1738 for the said Chamber, having arrived in India as a sailor at 9 guilders per the ship Hogersmilde and having been increased to 16 guilders on his running contract in the year 1740, to promote him upon the expiration of his contracted time under a new contract of five years to absolute assistant at twenty-four guilders per month. Lastly, upon the proposal of the lord commander, it was further resolved, instead of the ensign Johan Andries Kurtze who has departed for Batavia, to let the sergeant Christoffel Smal Johan command the military present here, for as long until regarding this it shall have been further disposed by their Honors, the lords of the High Indian Government, and also to make to him, on the liability of this, a proper transfer of the Company's armory. Surat, dated 17 April 1743 The skipper of the small craft Michiel Kust having requested this assembly by petition that, on account of the ample expiration of his time, he may depart for Batavia with the ship Domburg presently at hand, it is resolved to grant his request and, since that vessel is properly provided with officers, to let him make the crossing as second boatswain. Furthermore, the petition of the master of the equipage Barent vander Het is approved, who, having shown in writing that a quartermaster and an arquebusier among those stationed here on shore cannot get along well with the native sailors, very politely requests that those two may be sent away from this directorship, and in consequence thereof to release the quartermaster Abraham Walle and arquebusier Jurriaan Hop, but in return to take off from the said vessel Domburg and put ashore Samuel Fris, quartermaster, Dirk Cramer, sailor, and Sander Cornelis de Vos, also sailor, in order to perform service here on the Honorable Company's vessels. However, the petition of the pay bookkeeper and curator ad lites Mr. Johannes Labertus Radder to request, in the outgoing letter to the Right Honorable the Gentlemen of the High Government of India, that by their favor the creditors of the deceased bookkeeper Hendrik Ribbens and Sergeant and Engineer Carel Swaartfeger might also be placed on the list of authorization, in order thus to obtain their legitimate debt, it is decided to turn down until further orders in that regard shall have been received, seeing that from an extract of the letter from the Fatherland of 21 April of the past year received here over Ceylon on the 30th of the past month of March, it has appeared to this assembly that their Right Worships in the Fatherland have been pleased to suspend what was ordered in that regard by an earlier extract of a letter dated 13 December 1741, and to postpone the disposition thereof until further opportunity. The Company's brokers Roederam and Kissourdas, following what was recorded at the meeting on 21 March past, have had themselves announced and made known to the assembly, appearing there, that after much effort exerted they had finally found buyers for the unsold merchandise at the following prices, namely: The merchant Zaaldas Herridas: For the powdered sugar, the maund of 35 5/8 at rupees 3 — For the benzoin, the maund of 34 1/2 at rupees 14 — For the spelter, the maund of 34 1/2 at rupees 6 1/2 For the gumlac The merchant Sessoe: 10 leagers of arrack, each at rupees 135, with the further addition that this was the utmost to which they had been able to persuade those people, and that they did not believe anyone was to be found in the entire city who would offer more; which having been taken into consideration, and the prices compared against what was written in the invoice, and it also having been found that the spelter and gumlac do not by far fetch the purchase cost, nor the benzoin and arrack fetch any noteworthy profit, and the second-quality Bengal powdered sugar can only fetch 41 23/14 percent, thus 3 3/32 per hundred less than the next fixed price, the director submits for the consideration of the council whether, regarding the sugar, one ought to act according to merchant style and practice, and to accept this rather generous offer, all the more because it is already turning heavily to syrup, so that one had to fear that in case of delay they would not get nearly as much for it; but the members having unanimously testified that, although necessity seemed to demand such, they [illegible]

From Surat under date 1 April 1748 However, because the positive order not to dispose of those sweets at less than a 75 to 80 per cent advance could not be resolved upon for fear of own loss, it was resolved by unanimous vote, after mature deliberation and consideration of the foregoing, to refrain for the time being from the sale of the before-specified goods in hope of improvement, and in the meantime humbly to request their High Excellencies to grant most favorable authorization to be permitted to follow the market, which noticeably rises and falls here according to the smaller or larger supply, at least regarding such goods that are subject to decay and which the Honorable Company has in common with all other nations, since otherwise the Honorable Company's competitors, who are satisfied with a reasonable profit of 30, 40, and 50 per cent, will import so much of all kinds of merchandise that the Honorable Company will be left sitting with its own to great prejudice. Recently, or on the 26th of the past month of March, the sergeant and stable master Christoffel Rosendaal of Halberstadt, after having been sickly and disabled for some time, went out in the early morning and has not reappeared to this day, From Surat under date 10 April 1743 without anyone knowing where that man has gone, which is noted herein, and it was simultaneously resolved to have his wages written off in the pay books as of the undermentioned date, but in the meantime to have the necessary investigation made as to where he might be staying, without having taken any of his goods with him. The ship Domburg being completely unloaded and lying ready to take in cargo, it was resolved upon the proposal of the Director to grant the said vessel her dispatch as soon as possible via Malabar to Batavia, with instructions to the officers that if, due to an adverse voyage, they might not be able to make the Cochin roadstead before the lowering of the flag, they are then to make for Tuticorin and deliver the goods along with the papers for Ceylon and Cochin there. Souratta under date 17 April 1743 From with these express conditions that they, during their stay at Batavia, shall receive the same ration that is given to the Bengali sailors, and that upon their departure four months of wages must be paid to them in advance, for which the boatswains shall bind themselves to be responsible in case one or more of them should happen to die or run away in the interim; furthermore, that two months of wages must be paid annually to their wives, as well as that at the appointed time, when their contract has expired and they having no inclination to serve the Honorable Company any longer, they must be sent back to these lands. Upon all which terms and conditions the undersigned having engaged the aforementioned number of persons solely, however, under no longer a contract than for two years, he very politely requests of Your Honors that, when they are taken into the service of the Honorable Company, everything may be observed as punctually as possible, as these men will only enlist in order to make a trial of this, and if they should be deterred the first time by ill treatment or by the non-fulfillment of the contract concluded with them, the Honorable Company will not be able to be accommodated therewith in the future. It is thus resolved to send with all deference the samples, as placed in the box and sealed by the members of this council together with the ship's officers, per the ship Domburg, along with the mentioned report and the further documents pertaining thereto, to Their Noble Excellencies, the gentlemen of the High Government of the Indies, and to record herein that the last-mentioned order has been duly fulfilled. From Surat under date 12 April 1743 of the passed month of March of the Company's armory and dispensary, having been properly confronted against the trade books, and in the latter administration four bottles of Batavia distilled waters were discovered missing, his Honor now presented the following report: To the Honorable Jan Schreuder, Director and Supreme Commander of this Directorate. Honorable, Worshipful Sir, The transfers made as of the ultimo of the recently passed month of March of the Company's armory and dispensary having been exactly confronted by the undersigned against the current trade books, he found that of the armory to be in good order according to the said trade folios; but in that of the dispensary, 4 bottles of Batavia distilled waters were discovered missing, of which, according to the statement of the commissioners, 1 was missing and 3 were found broken. Herewith the undersigned shall await your Honor's respectable command, and in the meantime takes the liberty, with all high esteem, to remain, Honorable, Worshipful Sir, your Honor's humble servant. From Persia, 30 October 1742 may redound to the glory of his illustrious person, furthermore bestowing the favor of sound bodily health so that this burdensome and momentous government may be borne patiently and fortunately, to the support and comfort of those who shall find themselves under His High Right Honourable's then blessed administration. On the appointed day of this assembly, or on 6 August, the change in the chief administration was announced to the people with the requisite solemnity according to custom, and the Act of Authorization and the formula of the oath were presented to them after this had been carried out before or by us in Council, as your High Honourables, the Right Honourable and Right Respectable, will be pleased to deduce from the original resolution drawn up on that day in conformity with the formidable order, which accompanies the appendices under No 3½. Meanwhile we have also not failed to make these highly esteemed orders known to the servants at Bassoura, Boucher, and Spahan by letters of 31 July and 6 August, as well as to prescribe to them the introduction in conformity with the order and ancient custom. Furthermore, in the hope of an honoured and favorable reception, taking the liberty to congratulate the Right Honourable Hermanus van Suchtelen, as First Councillor and Director-General, likewise most submissively herewith, and, after supplicating the Lord's precious blessing, to wish that he may hold that glorious and no less important office in the possession of perfect health, to the fame of his esteemed person and the Company's interests in particular. On this occasion we collectively recommend our very humble persons to the powerful and most favorable consideration of your High Honourables, the Right Honourable and Right Respectable, expressing our humble thanks for the support received in merchants, writers, and servants. To our sensible regret, the Junior Merchant Assayer Anthony Knol passed away on this side of Cochin on 22 March aboard the ship Cornelia, so that we have again remained destitute of such a highly necessary person. We therefore take the liberty to petition your High Honourables submissively anew for such a person, so that upon changes in the coinage we may be constantly able to know its true value, since no fixed reliance can be placed on the coin species currently circulating here, and this, according to our humble thoughts, will only last as long as His Majesty remains living and triumphant. However, should he come to fall, we are certain that all the coinage struck by that monarch would no longer be current, as examples in this empire have repeatedly taught us. For your High Honourables' gracious approval of some of our humble undertakings and improvements made, both ashore and aboard the ships, we are submissively obliged. Meanwhile we shall carefully guard that henceforth no more flag cloth is issued to the shipping, or that other such goods will be bought from the English, to avoid your High Honourables' formidable displeasure.
