From Persia, the 31st of October 1742 To our sensible regret, we had seen that in Batavia at the public sale of the 2354 pieces of rastapaats returned per the Opperdoes, a loss of ƒ4219:7:— was incurred on the purchase amount. Reflection was also cast on the old orders of Your Right Honourable Grand Worships given in the year 1718, respectively by your esteemed missives of the 19th of July and the 15th of October 1718, wherein Your Right Honours were pleased to note that the orders previously given in no way intended to regulate the trade in merchandise—which was brought in by other private merchants as well as the Company—so strictly, but that, as far as was feasible and the Company's interest could bear, one ought to act according to merchant practice, time, and circumstance to dispose of the packaged goods to the best advantage, even if it were with only 20 percent advance, without holding them back if it came down to 2 to 3 percent, as it could not be seen that it would be in the Company's interest to leave the same lying longer in the warehouses and to expose them to further deterioration. In the meantime, after receiving Your Right Honourable Grand Worships' dreaded orders, we have regulated the linen trade and also the increase of the four chief sorts of spices in such a manner as shall hereafter be stated in the text under the subject of trade. Therefore, passing over the same here in silence under God's gracious blessing and Your Right Honours' approval, with the humble promise that in the future no more linens will be demanded by us unless a 50 percent advance can beforehand be calculated thereon; the officials at Bassoura, Boucher, and Spahan having been notified of this order, as well as that of the increase of the piece goods and spices, by letters of the 22nd of June and the 6th of August of the current year. Thus to fulfill Your Right Honours' esteemed intention, we shall furthermore not venture to send ships with merchandise directly from here to Coromandel, but shall ensure that, if goods are demanded from there and supplied by us, the same are unloaded at Cochin or Tuticorin as the monsoon permits, and further transported from that place to Nagapatnam, conforming to Your Right Honours' respected command. For even if—according to our most obedient proposal—we were licensed by Your Right Honours to send a ship or ships thither, we would be at a loss to provide the same with a worthy cargo, since the Right Worshipful Councillor Extraordinary of India, Governor and Director of that Coast, Jacob Mossel, and Council, notified us by their missive of the date 21st of June of the current year of the poor sale of the old copperware, as well as the 79860 lb of dried dates (tammer) sent per the Steenhoven, for which reason also the purchase of

From Persia, the 31st of October 1742 with the Hidreguw stands under the article to be, but one shall make no expenditures, also as far as practicable one shall labor to the utmost on that mineral and crop. The Passourase and Boucherse servants, by the more-mentioned missive of 6 August last, are prohibited. Regarding the state of the realm and the Minab debt, it is situated as will most obediently be presented to Your High Excellencies hereafter under the realm's article, so that no further account is given here in that regard, but only humbly assuring Your High Excellencies that henceforth no gifts will be solicited for the pocketing of that debt, and much less for any private interest (which has also never occurred), just as it will also not be neglected, but in the future, when summarizing the gifts made, it will be shown how much the expenditures of two years prior amounted to. However, regarding one and the same person, this will not well be feasible, considering one seldom sees that the regents of name presently remain so long in their station. Notwithstanding this, the observance of these honored orders will be followed with all exactitude as closely as possible according to duty. For the gracious remarks which Your High Noble Severe Grand Worships were pleased to make concerning our complaints about the extra tare of the sugar canassers, we find ourselves in the highest degree obliged, as also for the most wise order how in the future, upon receipt of that sweetness, action must be taken to discover whether the net and gross weight corresponds with the stated invoices; we shall then by no means fail to supply the true findings to Your High Excellencies in our humble outgoing letters. We take the liberty, begging a favorable interpretation, to demonstrate to Your High Noble Severe Grand Worships in all humility the misconception which (spoken under highly honored correction) we trust Your High Excellencies intend concerning the brokers' account. For as we come clearly to perceive from your highly respected letters of 9 November of the past year, it is presumed by Your High Excellencies that the considerable sum of ƒ355918:13:14, noted in the settlement of 17 May 1740, remained under their keeping at that time. That is far from the truth, for if Your High Excellencies would be pleased to pay regard to what is mentioned at the foot of that settlement, it will clearly appear that the said broker's debit at bottom is nothing other than the money which comes into the cash box through the sale of goods, whereby their account swells when no ships depart, but decreases again upon the dispatch of specie; there being also included under the aforesaid debit the old plundered Spahan bill-of-exchange debt amounting to ƒ106058:6:8. However, the money of the true cash box is not only under the brokers, but rests jointly under the Commander and the trade bookkeeper, all three of whom each have a separate key to it. The said account is debited for all incoming monies from sales, etc., and credited for the outgoing amounts of daily expenses, etc., by reason that the cash account has no currency in the Gamron trade books. However, considering that from Your High Excellencies' honored letters we could not rightly comprehend the will and desire of Your High Excellencies regarding this point, it was therefore found good at the consultation held on 31 May last, for the prevention of abuses and confusions, for the time being to let the brokers' account take its course in such manner as before, without making any change therein, until such time and while we shall be further reinforced with Your High Excellencies' honored orders on this subject. If Your High Excellencies should now think fit to separate the aforesaid account of the Banians from that of the cash box, we then humbly request that permission may be granted for the appointment of a cashier who keeps the cash and the expense book square, to the end that everything may be properly and clearly shown to Your High Excellencies and thereby prevent all such disadvantageous sentiments wherewith Your High Excellencies were pleased so undeservedly to accuse us in the said letters. The dismay and grief that strikes every one of us to the soul regarding some striking and painful expressions contained therein is indescribable, and we would fall into the uttermost despair of the world if we did not hope for the justice and gracious indulgence of Your High Excellencies. And since no more money rests under the Honorable Company's brokers than is needed for the daily expenditures, therefore those who are especially burdened therewith were not affected without the greatest joy that the contrary has been found, and whereby we have also remained excused from carrying out the demands of Your High Noble Severe Grand Worships. From Persia, the 31st of October 1742. that sustained that these would find extraordinarily little acceptance in the minds of this reckless and God-forsaken nation, among whom the Royal firmans concerning such matters are esteemed only as long as the ink remains wet. Indeed, upon a positive refusal, this reasonless rabble would not hesitate to compel a poor servant of the Honourable Company to do their will, or to offer a small gift, by inflicting a thousand sorts of affronts, and sometimes even blows with a stick, since they are confident that their doings will not reach the ears of His Majesty, as it is far too distant. But we consider it firm and certain that once the sovereign lays down his arms and peacefully occupies the Royal seat at Isfahan, and should come to properly hear of the extortions and turbulence of the local regents everywhere, it would cost the lives of many who are now held in high esteem, and the government would be placed upon a different footing, whereby trade would also become somewhat more flourishing. Since the silk trade will be discussed at length under the affairs of the realm, no further mention of the required 20000 lb of silk trade will be made here, with Your High Excellencies' permission, but we shall most obediently conform to what is to be reported there. In the meantime, we communicate to Your High Excellencies that upon settling the deceased van Leijpzigh's account, he still had a credit balance with the Honourable Company of ƒ10519:15 5/8, as Your High Excellencies, if you please, will find more circumstantially noted in our resolution of 31 May of last year. Wherefore the ordered compensation on this point has been honored, since the Honourable Company suffered no damages or affronts in satisfying the private creditors, which certainly would have befallen us had we refused to satisfy them before their true claims were proven to the satisfaction of the judges and deliberated upon by them. For this nation does not at all subject itself to the laws and ordinances of our courts, but in this case we must subject ourselves to theirs, as the Honourable Company is here merely a guest friend and completely without sovereignty. For, under correction, the Persians would not only mock a summons before our court and its verdicts, but would also find means to secure their indemnification, whether the Honourable Company liked it or not. And we still fear this in the event that the mamoodies 6220:— at ƒ 2693:10:— received by the deceased on account of the estate of the Greek Christian Constantien Lucca, together with the widow Gadjiek, whose true claim amounts to mamoodies 8613 9/80 at ƒ 3660:16:7½, and at 20 per cent per month since the 1st of March 1731 until the 12th of November 1739 in interest alone mamoodies 17063 2/3 or ƒ 7252:2:4 4/5, or together mamoodies 25677:½ at ƒ 10912:18:12, are not paid. Seeing that this will be treated more extensively under the judicial section, we shall most obediently refer thereto, and further report that Resident Pieter Aalmis, according to Your High Excellencies' honored order by letter of 22 June, has been notified to reimburse the gift presented by him to the ecclesiastical judge for the quashing of the claim which the concubine of the said van Leijpzigh made upon that estate according to the laws of the land. For the most obedient elucidation to Your High Noble and Right Honorable Excellencies concerning the paid agio on the Isfahan bill of exchange rate, we shall have the extraordinary honor to report in all submissiveness that this arose from the previously circulating copper coinage, since the agio on a silver mamoodie was only 25 per cent in Gamron and 50 to 75 per cent in Isfahan. So that the holder of the bill, when receiving 100 white mamoodies here, or at 25 per cent 125 black mamoodies, was obliged to pay out 100 mamoodies in white coin at Isfahan, which with the agio then in vogue there yielded 150 to 175 mamoodies. So that at times we were still greatly embarrassed to obtain bills of exchange here, because the merchant could find better profit in transporting his cash in copper coin than in advancing the same to us by bill of exchange with such a small advance, since after deduction of all expenses he could expect at least 15 and more per cent. But because at present, by order of the King, the white and black coinage has been made equal, bills of exchange are drawn without any agio or brokerage, and in like manner from that quarter to here. 63 From Persia, 18 October 1742 Therefore, henceforth not much money will be needed except for the daily expenses, although we can testify, because fruits please to, that henceforth not much money will be needed there either, except solely for the daily expenses. Oh, the evil suspicion that Your Right Honourables suspect of us, as if we held any intrigues with the Spahan servants regarding those procured sweetmeats, pains us to the very depth of our hearts, since we can safely testify to have never had any thoughts thereof, let alone to have carried such out; for if this or the like could be proven against us, we would not be worthy to enjoy good treatment as honest servants. What reason, then, would have moved us to forbid the resident Aalmis from further procurement by letter of 7 August 1740 as soon as we saw the excessive dearness of the dried cherries, when 1868 pieces were still deficient from the honoured requisition of Your Right Honourables? For in case we had committed any unfaithfulness and thus concluded a monopoly with him, we surely would sooner have condescended to the purchase, than to have prohibited it ipso facto on account of its dearness. Yet we can clearly judge from everything we are accused of, that such contrived and collected lies are solely concocted in the brains of such false and malicious people who, although undeserved, seek not only our utter ruin and destruction, but on top of that also attempt to injure our good name and reputation. But because the truth does not always remain hidden, we live in hope that those who eagerly dig a pit for us will plunge into it themselves before long, and thus reap the consequences thereof. We have repeatedly summoned the Armenian Godja Auwannees, but he has always remained in Kirman at his own expense and without prejudice to the Honourable Company's service under one frivolous pretext or another. But considering that he has an open account with the Spahan interpreter Elias Sahid, and which person in turn owes a pretty penny to the estate of the late Van Leypsigh, we shall compel Auwannees to appear and settle accounts, to the end that this interpreter may obtain what is his, the estate its own, and the legitimate creditors their claim without harm to the Honourable Company. As soon as we found ourselves honoured with Your Right Honourables' formidable order to appoint a private gauger, the choice fell on 31 May on the assistant Wilhelmus Boelhouwer, as being a person of quiet, sober, and polite conduct, who then, conforming to the custom of the land, took the prescribed oath during three sessions in the hands of the principal commander. And although the confrontation and adjustment had been performed by the fiscal and the judicial commissioners on the ultimate of August according to custom, conform to the report submitted thereof on 3 September, nevertheless, the further gauging and calibration was performed de novo by the said new gauger in the presence of the fiscal and the judicial commissioners, and of the effect of which such proper report has been made as Your Right Honourables, if you please, will find inserted in the resolution of 10 June, to which we shall most obediently conform regarding the findings of the scales and weights; and, as this has always been practicable here, the confrontation of the same shall take place twice a year conforming to the formidable order. The deed as junior merchant for the assistant Jan George Schemming has already been sent back per the ships Kronenburg and Middenrak pursuant to our resolution of 23 March of the past year, wherefore we trust that the same will have reached Your Right Honourables long ago, while we assure Your Right Honourables that in the future we shall proceed with greater circumspection in granting councils, in order to avoid Your Right Honourables' formidable displeasure.

The first-named comes to address Your High Nobilities in the most humble manner, petitioning to be absolutely confirmed in his acting office, with the promise that this benevolence to be obtained from Your High Nobilities will be shown throughout his life by zealous application to merit such. The addition to the aforementioned regulation concerning the taking into service of native children, as well as the improvement of the Honourable Company's European servants, we have caused to be inserted by the Secretary at the back of the duplicate resting at this office, to the end that the same shall henceforth serve as our guiding rule without deviation. For the kindly transmission of the adjacent letter, along with the highly esteemed extracts mentioned therein, we are greatly obliged, as well as for the dispatch of the extract from the demand of returns for the year 1742, which, duly answered in the margin according to custom, accompanies this letter; while we respectfully offer below our reply to the first-mentioned, according to revered order, to Your Noble High Esteemed, and will let all the commands contained therein serve unswervingly for our guidance and observance, so that thereby we may obtain Your Noble High Esteemed's benign favor, being sufficient next to God, over us, Your Noble High Esteemed's poor and sufficiently languishing servants in this miserable and distressing [place]. From Persia, the 31st of October 1742 6 1/2 pounds at 5 mahmudis at 2 guilders, 2 stuivers, 1/8 penning, or per pound at 6 stuivers, 4 2/3 penningen, were sold with a profit of scarcely 101 1/2 percent according to the books. Yet, notwithstanding this fortunate result, we dare not be so bold as to assure Your Noble Right Honourables of the same in the future, seeing that this vent was caused by an extraordinary lack of the Mocha sort. And whenever the scarcity thereof continues, we flatter ourselves that we shall soon be so fortunate as to be able to communicate to Your Noble Right Honourables a desired outcome regarding the 11843 pounds of Ceylon coffee beans sent on the 6th of August of the current year per the ship Duifje to Basra and Bushehr, in fulfillment of the requisitions made by those servants, of which 2000 pounds were for the first-mentioned place and 9843 pounds for Bushehr. We would hold ourselves assured of a favourable sale if those beans were to correspond with the sample sent in the year 1739 as an obligation by the Noble, Valiant, Right Honourable Lord Gustaaf Willem van Imhoff, upon which our requisitions were also founded. But the beans obtained now for two consecutive years have completely failed to meet our expectations, as they are of a very poor value. Indeed, even the packaging of those brought on the 12th of May of the current year with the ship Cornelia was, according to the testimony of the warehouse keeper, overheated and musty, so that one can easily comprehend from this how the fruit enclosed therein must have been conditioned. This infection, however, cannot be attributed to the air of the sugar, since no sweets were brought with that vessel; wherefore said spoilage must have been caused either by bad stowage on board or in the warehouses from where they were shipped. The first mentioned one would most likely have to believe, assuming that no seafarers would be so innocent as to receive damaged goods without entering their protest on that subject. Although the officers of said vessel, for their excuse, upon inspection had it alleged and recorded as reasons for the bad condition of the aforementioned bales that they had received them at Cochin sewn with bad and rotten Tuticorin gunny. Concerning this point, we have given knowledge thereof to the Malabar ministers by our letter dispatched under today's date, as well as on the 22nd of January of the current year, regarding the quantity received there in the past year per the Ketel, and very earnestly requested that whenever in the future a demand is again made by us, we might then be accommodated with greenish beans, because the native is very confident in them, as we then flatter ourselves with the hope that in the scarcity of Mocha beans, as is the case at present, a good vent will be brought to said crop between the Mocha and Javanese, which we desire from the bottom of our soul, so that we may once be so fortunate as to be able to comply in this case with Your Noble Right Honourables' worthy goal and wholesome intention, as well as the repeated orders received. That said coffee should have been shipped in such bad condition by the warehouse keepers in order to dispose of other private coffee all the better, we will not think so maliciously for the present; but on the other hand, we also cannot believe that this spoilage inside the ship's hold would be caused by bad stowage, or that it might be caused by the air of the sugar, and that the bales had possibly lain immediately upon the sugar canassers, in which manner it has been experienced on a certain West Indian shore that the same was infected and spoiled by the air of the sugar. There must therefore be a fraud lurking, and a design by some malicious servants to prevent the Company from profiting from this trade, which, having been maliciously put into practice for many consecutive years against all our dispatches, is now the cause of the Company at Batavia being so heavily overstocked with that fruit, and still being overstocked through the daily supplies, as appears from Your Honors' general letter of the last of June 1739. From Persia the 31st of October 1742 To this was added what the ministers had imagined to still conquer if they had been provided with the right sort of linens according to their petition, but when one sets against this for consideration the great decline of the Isfahan factory to the amount of ƒ 38470:3:3, being ƒ 29315:10:- more than the year before, caused, as the ministers report, by the extorted gifts, we must say with Your Honor, according to the said general letter of the last of January 1739, not only that it is scarcely, but even that it is not at all worth the trouble to maintain so large an establishment for such small profits as are made on the merchandise, which cannot make good the shipping expenses and burdens of the factories, having in total for the entire directorate in the financial year 1738/1739 amounted to only ƒ 98578:8:8. It would be very different if this advance had been substantial, yet we nevertheless want to trust with good courage that these profits [illegible] Your Right Honorable [illegible] would be sufficient to well support the unbearable decline and [illegible] We have the honor to inform you that most recently, or on the 6th of August just passed, the ship De Duif departed thither with a notable cargo of ƒ 61896:1:8, in order to ensure that the employees were not lacking the right sort of linens desired there. Therefore, out of consideration for the direct navigation thither to Bengal, in conformity with our decree of the 23rd of April by letter of the 27th of May 1739, it was ordered and licensed to annually make a requisition themselves from that directorate for such suitable linens as are desired here, provided that a copy thereof is sent to us each time for speculation, to the end that the constant complaints which the said employees make to and fro about each other may thereby finally be relieved, whereby we surely remain suspected by Your Right Honorable and their High Excellencies at Batavia as if that factory were left destitute by us of the merchandise desired there, and of which gross mistake those employees, when writing as they ought, will in no way be able to accuse us, wherefore we are at ease, as our innocence will then shine forth all the clearer. In order to check and prevent the decline of this factory as much as possible, we therefore sent thither on the 14th of August of the previous year, under the conduct of the bookkeeper and appointed second, David Bafkens, together with the assistant Anthony van der Wall, a suitable cargo of ƒ 25088:3:8. These persons, without having suffered any hindrance of note along the way, arrived there on the 21st of October with the said goods. However, further concerning its good or bad outcome we have received no report, and since we would nevertheless gladly know its condition and what hope there is regarding the sale of those goods, the Isfahan employees have therefore by letter [illegible] bad outcome, along with their remarks in that regard, in order to be able to give Your Right Honorable a further dutiful elucidation in due time, but indeed that the expenses at the said factory in the year 1740 were ƒ 1990:14:4 more than the previous year in the year 1739/1740. But how the outcome of the balance of the years 1741/1742 will turn out, one must await from that time, with a heartfelt desire that at least enough profit is made there so that the expenses of that factory can be met and amply paid from it. The profits and expenses of the aforesaid years being shown hereafter in a short compendium, we shall, under hope of Your Honorable's high-esteemed approval, refer thereto for the sake of brevity, merely noting here that the expenses of the year 1740/1741 were ƒ 29957:14:5 less, while on the other hand the profits were ƒ 9339:12:3 1/10 more than the year before, thus together changed for the better by ƒ 39297:16:8 1/80, the general expenses per directorate in the said financial year of 1740/1741 being only ƒ 186733:8 and the profits on the other hand having been ƒ 381891:2 2/5, so that the profits still exceeded the expenses by a reasonable sum of ƒ 195158:- 12/5, and to which (as has already been said in humility beforehand) the factory of Isfahan brought many expenses but no profits.

Because before the receipt of the adjacent highly esteemed order that commission post was provisionally established, as their High Excellencies were also informed in our humble letter of 4 April 1737, and after deduction of the expenses there still remained a sweet little amount to the good, we therefore made scruple to lift that small trading post, wherefore it still remains provisionally established as heretofore, until such time as we come to receive further orders concerning this, the profits in the year 1740 having been ƒ33919:17:4 and the expenses ƒ8316:16:3, thus the profits in this year were more than the expenses by ƒ25543:1:1. The complaints of the servants about the inhumanity of the native princes—and if it is not the prince himself, then it is the Berquelang or administrator of the realm—are so manifold that if one could rely upon them, one would not need to hesitate at all to abolish entirely the navigation and commerce to Siam, Japan, Persia, and other trading posts of the Indies where things go the same way, just as one has already been forced to do with Mocha. Salt measures fitted with double bottoms, taking out the top bottom when receiving salt from the native and putting it back in again when they had to measure it out, just as in various places in India and even in this very Siam false weights were used, besides other such tricks which, insofar as they have come to our knowledge, were communicated more fully and set down in our letter of 3 August 1732 and 10 September 1738 under the matter of Mocha. On the other hand, one may well think and believe that most of the inconvenience and resistance is caused by the Company's servants themselves. From Persia, 31 October 1742 Because of the lack of money, we received so little that we were compelled to dispatch the aforementioned ship poorly supplied with cash, as the monsoon for Bengal was beginning to pass rapidly. Shortly thereafter, an order came from Mhamet Tackie Chan for the merchants to lend 400 thomas or f 17000:—:— for the period of one month, since there were only 600 thomas or f 25500:—:— in cash in the treasury, His Majesty having bestowed 1000 thomas or f 42500:—:— as a present upon 500 soldiers because they virtually ruined the Huwala Arabs at Sohar; and Tackie Chan was ordered by the monarch that he had to pay out those moneys immediately upon the arrival of the chappar or post courier. Blows with sticks were not lacking for the poor merchant until those claimed 400 thomas were fully collected; from which specimen Your Right Excellencies can gauge how trade stands here. But since this tyrant, in accordance with the King's order, will shortly leave with the entire army and court retinue for Arabia for the conquest of Muscat, about which further details will follow; and as it is then the best time of the monsoon for the merchant, we live in hope that trade will then begin to revive, all the more if the rumor of the monarch's departure down to Isfahan is true. At least we heartily desire the best for the welfare of the Honorable Company. And since the brokers as well as we still maintain good hope for a meaningful period, we therefore take the liberty to request for the trade of the year 1742/1743 such merchandise as is known by the accompanying humble requisition list, to which we take the liberty most obediently to refer ourselves, with the fervent wish that the Chinese troubles have ceased and the sugar mills have been restored to their former state so that we can be supplied with that sweet commodity, since some profit could still be gained from it, as due to this circumstance little was brought by our competitors either, so that the Persian, suffering from want, has made much inquiry for it; wherefore there is a very great probability that when supplied with a sizable quantity, it will change masters in a short time.
