103 From Persia, 31 October 1742 as well as the fine Cassas and ditto Santipore muslins sent thither could not properly be known whether the costs could be recovered there, but how the pepper sent thither had to be handled, 100000 Boucher, 100000 guilders instead of 50000 could rightly be held assured. Therefore, the servants there have been ordered to first, before unloading those cloths, sound out by taking a sample whether the desired profits can indeed be obtained on them, and if not, that they shall then leave them as they are in the said vessel to save customs and further expenses and send them back hither to Bushire; in like manner it must also be dealt with regarding the surplus pepper sent, if it could not be sold there. For in order to dispatch the small vessel thither quickly, it was approved in Council on 31 July—since there was a shortage here instead of an abundance thereof—to send to Bassoura 150000 lb instead of the demanded 100000 lb, and to Boucher 100000 lb instead of 50000 lb of pepper, because we were assured by private merchants of the scarcity and high demand for those corns at both places, so that we hope to hear of a desired success regarding this shortly, as well as From Persia, 31 October 1742 at least the best [illegible] the four sorts of spices, which aromatic fruits with currency loss and [illegible] also that this our handling will be justified by your High Nobilities for the reasons known in the attached estimate. From Persia, the 31st of October 1742 Concerning the sent perpetuans, no definite report can yet be made as to what price they, in the rough, will fetch according to the order, but it is to be hoped that with this increase the aim and desire of Your Right Excellencies will be achieved. Yet, under most esteemed interpretation, we are obliged to say that very great objections are held as to whether the fine and coarse mullmulls, the chintzes, the soesies, orong sjahy, the brown blue salempores, and coetenis first sort will indeed be sold for the newly fixed prices. Nevertheless, we will apply all possible diligence toward their sale. Regarding the sent 25 pieces of broadcloth in sorts and 50 pieces of perpetuans, we can give Your Right Excellencies no definite report, but the brokers have good expectations of their turnaround, and we likewise harbor no small hope that as soon as the winter season approaches and the merchant arrives from up-country, the same will quickly change masters, notwithstanding the fact that on the 11th of August last an English Company ship named Britannia arrived here at the roadstead directly from England in 5 months' time, the cargo of which consists principally of English broadcloth and perpetuans. Because the Dutch trade of that weave is preferred by the native over the English one on account of its heavy body—for from the English broadcloth they can make nothing other than cabayas, but from the heavy Dutch broadcloth, called by them begras, caps, stockings, raincoats, cattabies (coats not lined with fur), and cordiel (also small fur-lined coats without sleeves)—there would be an extra good trade in Dutch broadcloth for the Honourable Company and a good sale, were it not that the same is brought from Amsterdam directly through Muscovy over the Volga by private merchants cheaper to Isfahan than by merchants who transport it up from here; so that the broadcloth which the merchant trades here is for the greatest part transported to Kerman, Herat, and Khorasan. From Persia, the 31st of October 1742 Upon the delivery of 62 lb radix China as a gift for His Majesty, it was found that this root was for the greatest part very heavily infested by worms, through which some pieces had become completely decayed and unusable. On which grounds it was resolved at the session of 13 May, for the preservation of the good, to sort out the bad and throw it away, but to have the good packed in containers for preservation, which was also duly performed, as appears from the report submitted by the upper and under-merchant of this trading post dated 16 May. The completely useless 180 lb noted therein has been written off to the profit and loss account, according to custom, at f37:7:—. The account of the brokers is watched by us as much as possible with constant settlements kept between them and the Company's cash office, as Your Right Excellencies, if you please, may see from the accompanying accounts kept under the ultimo February (in copy) and 31 May last (in original), which accompany this. Their debit at the closing of the commercial books under the ultimo August last was found to consist of a significant capital of f496209:14:2. Against this, they must be credited in the new books for that which in cash, etc., has been shipped off by the bearer of this, to the amount of rs 36916:1 1/3, being f156893:19:2, whereafter their debit still remains at rs 79839:13/8, being f339317:19:2. Deduct herefrom the Isfahan bill debt amounting to rs 249549:—, being f106058:6:8, so that the brokers' total debit, or more properly speaking the funds which remain under them in cash today, consist of a capital of rs 14584:2/8, being f357:12:10. The reason that such a significant capital is retained here is solely to be attributed to the lack of transportable specie desired in your parts, since at present we have been able to obtain virtually no European or Moorish gold ducats, Persian rupees, etc., in exchange for Thatta, Delhi, or Agra ducats. On the other hand, we cannot entirely deprive ourselves of cash, because we do not know how it will turn out with our presented petition to His Majesty regarding the free trade in silk on the old footing. For in case that trade is now permitted to us, one will need a significant capital of rs 4000 to rs 800 for it; wherefore, should that trade be granted to us, we have chosen the safest course to prevent embarrassment for lack of cash. And in case this trade turns out contrary to our wish, we shall then immediately rid ourselves, upon the departure of the Duyf, of the excess cash which we will then have in the cash office over and above what is needed for daily expenses. Further, according to the estimate of the council of 31 May, the said offices were debited for the cost of 84 pounds of borax, amounting with the incurred charges to 176 4/18 mamoodies, or ƒ 75:1:—, which was delivered by them and sent from here with the ship 't Slot te Kronenburg to Coromandel for testing, and returned by the Honorable, Highly Esteemed Mr. Jacob Mossel together with the Council at Nagapatnam under date of 21 June of the past year because that gum was not of the proper sort and no one was found at the Coast who knew it, so that, as already stated above, this was placed back into their hands and they were sharply reproached in that regard. Concerning the administrators, we humbly take the liberty most obediently to notify Your High Noble Lordships how, by the principal trade bookkeeper mentioned more often herein, Christoffel de Gaan, it was made known at the session of 4 September that in the bookkeeping of the Batavia invoice brought by the ship Cornelia, he had discovered an error in the addition of the crimson cloths: that instead of ƒ 957:15:8, only ƒ 857:15:8 had been counted, and thus exactly one hundred guilders too little, so that the said invoice, instead of the recorded ƒ 131762:5:—, now amounts, with the 2 percent Batavia charges, to ƒ 131869:5:—; and since this error has been properly redressed here, we therefore humbly request that the same may likewise be done at the Coast by Your High Noble Lordships' revered order, in order to prevent much confusion. From Persia the 31st of October 1742 to have some armory and equipment goods that somewhat needed repair fixed, item to melt down the silver mountings of the aforesaid horse bridles, and also to have a long and strong pair of the same made with the addition of some more silver, so that there would be no deficiency and confusion during the exchange of native visits, for all which reasons the leather of some silver-gilt bridles, which had rotted and decayed from sweat, will also be replaced with new leather. The Lieutenant Frederik de Wilt, who departed on the ship d' Pietel, duly transferred the Armory before his departure to the ensign Wilhelmus Lindeman who remained here, as recorded in the Resolution of 22 January of the current year. However, the inventory thereof, as well as that of the artillery and equipment goods, and also of the medicinal shop, was duly carried out according to custom by the ultimate of August, and since all those papers were granted entry into the resolution of 4 September last, we therefore take the liberty to refer ourselves most humbly thereto, with further respectful communication. 117 From Persia the 31st of October 1742 That the ocular inspection of this fortress by the appointed commissioners, namely the Warehouse Master and the Fiscal of this Directorate, was carried out in accordance with annual custom, as more fully demonstrated by the report submitted by them, wherein the dilapidated condition and other defects of this Lodge are specified by name, which report was examined at the session of the 12th current. The already mentioned Assizer Wilhelmus Boelhouwer having been placed at his own request as a warehouse assistant, he has not only been discharged from the said office but also from the oath formerly taken and attached thereto, and in his place the assistant Frederik Beeling has been nominated and elected, who at the meeting of 4 September took the oath established for that purpose solemnly, and also afresh dutifully checked all balances, scales, and weights in the presence of the Fiscal, item in the presence of two specially appointed judicial committee members against the standard weight, and found them to be as the report inserted in the Resolution of the 12th current will further demonstrate to Your High Nobilities. From Persia, the 31st of October 1742 As is known by the cargo, together with sulphur for the Batavia offices, costing the 6 lb with its charges 1 1/10 or f. 10:-:- or /680 at f. 1:12 7/9, and it has been in vain due to the commotion of the whites to transport it; in satisfaction of the requisitioned on date from Basra and Bushehr, it must be said to be sent by the bearer of this to Your Right Honourables and the said Western Company's respective western offices, with and along with 105237 lb of sulphur, as: 60237 lb for Batavia, 20000 lb for Ceylon, and 25000 lb for Coromandel; 105237 lb as above, which, with the charges incurred thereon until on board, come to cost per 6 lb mrt. 1 8/80 at f. 10: 13 3/5, or per pound 869 mrt. 14080 at f. -: 1:12 23/30. We would, if it had been possible, gladly have dispatched more of this combustible material, but because of the bustle which the English make hereabouts, such has been impossible, as they exchange their goods for the said sulphur, which they accept without purification and in that manner transport to Madras and Bengal, so that we hold for certain they know very well how to turn a profit thereby. In satisfaction of the 8000 lb of dry and wet dates previously demanded from Basra; and from that said government, to desist from the purchase of the aforesaid mineral because of the apparent rise in price; and the 300000 lb of wheat demanded from Bushehr, the servants were prohibited by letter of the 6th of August from the further collection of old copperware at such excessive prices of mts. 11:- at f. 4:13:- per 6 lb, as the copper recently sent to Coromandel came to cost, together with the 4000 lb of dry dates and 4000 lb of wet dates previously demanded from the aforementioned government of Basra. Because the said Noble, Highly Esteemed Lord Jacob Mossel, Extraordinary Councillor of the Indies and Governor of Coromandel, together with the Council at Nagapatnam, notified us by their cited letter of the 21st of June of the past year that the old copperware, due to its expensive purchase price and which might yet rise, began to reach such a high price that it could no longer be turned over at their place with profit, wherefore their Honours considered that for the service of the Honourable Company it was better to desist from its further purchase, unless it could be obtained against more profitable prices. From Persia, the 31st of October 1742 And as the dates brought there, although having yielded good percentages at that time for a small quantity as is known by our letter, yet their Honours were still left with a large remainder of the 88000 lb sent from here via Steenhoven, so that it would be very much if, upon the sale of the entire quantity, the stated purchase amount were retrieved. However, since the Malabar ministers persisted in their requisition of 10000 lb of madder from Basra made on date 18 February of the year 1740, the servants were therefore instructed only to procure that. Through the arrival from Madras via Malabar of an English ship named The Jenny on the 24th of January, we were informed of the dire condition into which the city of Batavia had fallen regarding provisions of life due to the Chinese troubles, such that almost no bread or rice was to be had there. This matter was taken into serious consideration by us during the session of the 10th of February, when it was resolved that, since the ship Ridderskerk was daily expected back here from the crown's service, we would fully load the same with wheat as soon as possible and dispatch it to Your Right Honourables, because the 6 pounds at that time were to be had for mans 9/10, and the charges falling thereon calculated in gross were only mamoodies 1/10, so that the man of 6 pounds with all charges of wastage etc. up to on board would come to mamoodies 4 1/10 or f. -: 9: 12 2/5, or the pound at mamoodies 1/10 or f. -: 1: 10 1/15, which would give a difference with the wheat previously purchased and dispatched from here in the year 1736 via the ship Stadwijk of 8 1/3 per cent to the good, but against that recently sent from Bushehr via the Middenrak an advance of 42 per cent. From Persia the 31st of October 1742 their repair and restoration under earnest recommendation to attend to thriftiness, together with the exchange of some old for new copperware, provided that the worn-out ones were sent hither, was permitted; meanwhile, the repair done there on the last of February of last year to the amount of f 430:3:8 was passed in the assembly of the 4th of September on account of its necessity, as no excesses were observed therein. But on the other hand, it was thought proper to refuse the disbursement concerning the purchase of rice, wheat, and wine for rations, for the reason and from the consideration that the Basra Resident never enjoyed any emolument of wheat, nor ever brought up wine for gifts, or bought rice for rations, etc., because with the departure of a ship occasion their arrears are always compensated out of our stores, in such manner as was recently effected with the Duyfje, and therewith their ordinary ration of rice, French wine, and arrack for the period of two years, or from the last of February 1741 to the last of February 1743, has been satisfied; although, regarding the gift wine, one must well believe that this liquid was consumed abundantly by the Turks, as some Ottomans are pre-eminently lovers of the juice of Bacchus, yet because the same is marked as a novelty, we could not well or dare not condescend therein, but have deferred the same to the gracious indulgence and pleasure of Your Right Noble Lordships. However, their request to be allowed to drive an old, decrepit riding horse unworthy of fodder onto the dike, and in its place to take into use the young grey stallion horse gifted to the Company by the Captain Pasha on the 9th of November of the past year, has been granted to them, this having been put into effect on the 15th of April following, as can be viewed more broadly in their letter of the 19th of July, as well as the report of the first-mentioned date, if it pleases you. From Persia, the 31st of October 1742 not yet daring properly to trust as brokers the heathens newly taken into service, his dispatch hither was repeatedly ordered and directed by letters of 28 February and again on 6 August last past, as we assumed that the servants long since could have known whether those Phytagorists are suitable or not, and furthermore that he would indeed be needed upon the arrival of His Highness Mohammad Taqi Khan, so that we expect him here upon the return of the Duyf; the young assistant Hendrik Diedelof Bax having departed for that place with the said small vessel according to the resolution of 3 September past to assist in the clerical work, together with all such letters, orders, and writings as were brought by the goodness of Your Right Honourables with the Cornelia and the Duyf for the guidance of us and those servants, sent thither in such manner; furthermore, by letter of 14 August shortly thereafter, in conformity with Your Right Honourables' honoured order, the restitution of the overweight losses that occurred excessively under the last of February 1740 was ordered and enjoined upon those servants. Since this lord was out of power, he could do nothing regarding our petition other than to submit it in writing to His Majesty, upon which he obtained such a regam (written order) from that monarch as will be described more fully below with respect under the article on the silk trade. The servants, by letter of the 22nd of June next: he must reimburse in cash what was rendered through him, David, in order by this example to cause other lazy and slow servants to be somewhat more diligent in the service. The said servants also understood by their letter of the 5th of May that it appears to them he, David, has little inclination to return here. Thus, in our outgoing letter, orders will be given to them to urge him, David, once more to depart; but when they see that this is fruitless and he finally does not intend to come this way, to dismiss him then from the service in our name as a rebellious subject, since, respectfully spoken, it is ill catching hares with unwilling dogs; and as we on the other hand have already appointed the Basra interpreter Jacob Jan Sahid at the session of the 4th of September of the past year, upon the esteemed approval of Your High Nobilities, as Gamron interpreter, being a person of good testimonials, who, as we had the honor to report, is expected here according to orders upon the return of de Duyf. With our letter of complaint to His Persian Majesty concerning the treacherous and godless treatments by Imamwerdi Khan and other lower-country rulers experienced by us in the past year, things have likewise turned out very badly, beyond our expectation. For the same was sent in secret on the 8th of November of the past year to the Isfahan servants for further forwarding to the court, with one of the two interpreters who should be deemed the most capable for it, under recommendation to add thereto such an accompanying letter as should be directed according to the contents of our writing, so that if it might have happened that His Highness Muhammad Taqi Khan was dismissed from office or had passed away, the same could then always be delivered, along with our letter of complaint, to such a powerful lord as the envoy might think fit and see to have power enough over the mind of the monarch for the pressing of our complaints. By later letters of the 6th of December, the speedy forwarding of our complaints with the utmost caution and circumspection was once more recommended to them, to the end that we might obtain the highly necessary and wished-for satisfaction thereon the sooner the better. In reply to the first-mentioned letters, the servants wrote on date the 9th of the just-mentioned month that because the interpreter David Sahid was still in Tabriz and the other, Elias Sahid, was excused on account of his extreme old age, they therefore had assigned this commission to the Company's newly engaged Persian writer, Mirza Muhammad Reza, as he was a shrewd, upright, and quiet man, who then, after having obtained disclosure and instruction of everything, departed upward on the 26th of that month; the interpreter David Sahid being likewise ordered that, if his previous commission was finished, he should then report in writing on his experiences and return with the mullah back to the court. Greatly desiring to obtain satisfaction, in the meantime, to bring an end to those pressing matters, we deemed it proper to present to His Highness Mhamed Tackie Chan, by two swift runners under date of 5 February, all the copies of the writings sent with the molla to His Majesty and him for his perusal, and likewise to request his advice regarding the same. But since he answered very evasively thereto by a letter of 15 March received here, and came to advise us to wait with it until he had arrived in loco, when, after he had spoken with us and if we then still considered it necessary to dispatch our complaints, he would himself give us a chappar to that end, at which time we could be firmly assured of their secure conveyance; and since, according to the rumors then current, the King was supposed to be surrounded at Derbent on the Caspian Sea by the Lesghians, and the Ottoman was said to be prepared to invade the Persian Empire in two places at once, Persia, the 31st of October 1742, namely on the side of Erivan and Hamadan, to which end he had already mobilized two mighty armies of 300000 European janissaries; therefore, this matter was taken into consideration by us at our session of 16 March, and at the same time it was deemed proper to give the Isfahan servants notice of the news circulating here, and likewise to order them, if the same were true, to recall the said molla—if he should still be at Kashan—before any more money was squandered unnecessarily, because we supposed that if the said rumors were true, the King would then be so embarrassed that he would be able to give little hearing to our complaints. And Moorish trade; the remainder are ipso facto common sailors, for most of the officers drowned. As soon as the principal skipper of the said vessel foundered, he immediately did his best to hire vessels in order to salvage as many people and goods as was at all possible, but the effort was in vain because the nation residing there on the shore, namely the Baluchis, were themselves intent upon that booty, so that he could obtain no vessels for money. Also one Ali Sultan, vice admiral of the Persians, who in the said storm at Bandar Laurie also lost his ship the Tatta Janghy, being a Surat merchant vessel, the Catta Ghayer, which had been hired by the English gentlemen and likewise lent to the Persian, was stranded at Karachi, so that only a few Persian vessels that were lying in the river at Bandar Laurie have been preserved.
