From Persia, 31 October Anno 1742. will have reached the right objective by the Cornelia. Therefore the same persons were very humbly supplicated, and on that account we are also destitute of the emanated orders as to how such unfortunate persons must be dealt with in the subject case, all of which has occurred solely according to our meager comprehension; nevertheless, one hopes that regarding one thing and another it will yet have been handled according to Your High Excellencies' true aim and intention. And whereas the following persons, namely: Willem Basse of Sas van Gent, assistant, Simon van Veen of The Hague, provisional [illegible], Daniel Uijlenbroek of Amsterdam, bookbinder, with the Ketel, Claas Heeren of Amsterdam, boy, arrived here with Ridderskerk, are destitute of their pay accounts last closed at Batavia, as well as for the reason that they continue to run formally in the pay books of this directorship and those of the sloop de Valk, therefore the said persons come in the most submissive manner to plead that they may obtain their said accounts through the benevolent order of Your High Excellencies, so that hereafter, along with others, they may enjoy that which has already been, and is still being, earned by them. With the ship de Cornelia we received from Ceylon a certain memorandum dated 21 July of the past year, whereby this directorship, by order of the Honorable, Respected Mr. Willem Mourits Bruijnink, former Governor and Director of that renowned island, together with the Council, was debited at cost price for certain 4 small flasks of rose water found short there, which are charged at f 3:7:8 per flask, or the said 4 flasks at f 13:10:-, and 1 hide of Persian upper leather at f 2:12:8, or together f 16:2:8. However, upon revision of the invoices, it being found that the 4 flasks of rose water, with their charges from here, are only charged at f 2:14 3/15 per flask, or the four pieces at f 8:3:10 24/25, but set at f 8:3:8, and the hide of upper leather only amounts to f 1:13:2 1/125, but set at f 1:13:8, which reckoned only amounts to f 9:17:-, and that charged in the Ceylon memorandum, as already stated, amounts to f 16:2:8, from which it appears that this directorship has been overcharged by f 6:5:8. Therefore, at the meeting on 31 May, it was approved to write back the excess amount to the Government of Ceylon and, in the interim, to have the merchant and then Warehouse Master Christoffel de Haan debited for the actual cost of f 9:17:-. But since everything that the crew members receive here is delivered to them as well as unpacked and weighed by themselves or in their presence, therefore the said de Haan, together with the currently serving Willem Allard van Iongstal, comes in a very submissive manner to beseech Your High Excellencies that the goods loaded into the ships may then also be accounted for by the officers sailing on them, as they have signed not only the unpacking notes, but also the bill of lading; because whenever they have anything to object against their cargo, they can properly have such noted at the place where the inquiry regarding the receipt thereof is made to them in council, as—respectfully spoken—an administrator cannot possibly be responsible for what is lost or broken due to the careless handling and neglect of some crew members. Therefore, regarding this point, a gracious decision from Your High Excellencies is most humbly requested. The pay accountant Claude Anthonie Stoffier has, by petition, made known to us his claim of Ms 62 at f 27:18:- on the estate of the late cook's mate of the sloop de Valk, by name Johannes Wijnkamp, with an indication of what the debt arose from, supplicating besides that he might be permitted to deduct that amount from the deceased's outstanding wage credit of f 37:2:-; and because the validity of this submitted claim of his was clearly proved by him, authorization was therefore granted to him according to our resolution of 11 July. In the meantime, concerning the domestic management, we take the liberty to denote to Your High Excellencies that, since the remainder of the rice according to the calculation and statement of the former provision master Jacob Carelsz as of the end of February only consisted of 8585 lb, and we had obtained firm reports regarding the scarcity of that crop at Cotty, from which we could well perceive that no support with the ships coming hither

Persia, the 31st of October, Anno 1742. from the finding was observed, because that liquid always and instead of support of that highly necessary food was to be received, and because on the other hand a substantial quantity was brought in by our English neighbors from Bengal and Malabar, whereby that grain had dropped to a fair price of m=s 1½ per 6 lb, therefore it was resolved in the session of the 10th of February to qualify the purser for the purchase of 40,000 lb; but since by the findings submitted in the recent session of the 12th of this month it was shown that not only the above-mentioned but also the aforesaid 8,585 pounds, except for 11,225 lb, had been consumed, the purser Cornelis Bijlevelt was consequently ordered to make a purchase of 60,000 lb at the aforementioned price, taking into consideration that we were to expect no relief for the time being, and yet for reasons of orderly text were nonetheless obliged to provision the ships properly, as well as the men stationed at this shore, in order to avoid and prevent murmuring; in respect of which motive, upon the receipt of arrack, an alteration was also immediately made to the resolutions taken on the ultimate of October and the 1st of December of the past year, because according to custom that liquid has again been supplied to them instead of money, From Persia, the 31st of October, Anno 1742. being disbursed for that, the which have been successively spent by him. Furthermore, upon the proposal of the Provisional Fiscal, it was approved in the session of the 10th of February to discharge a Caffre from service by the middle of that month, since he testified that he could be spared, and also to have 5 pieces of Persian cleavers with their baldrics purchased for the other 5 pieces of ditto, in order to be able to distinguish those of the court from other native servants, for which was disbursed M=s 300 at f 127:10. Further, pursuant to the resolution of the 28th of March, upon the written petition of the Toek Ibrahim Sahid, it was determined to reimburse him for such M=s 1,204 ƒ 511:14 as, according to the specification submitted therewith, were disbursed by him during his voyage and stay at Congo with the Honorable Company's ships de Ketel and Ridderskerk in the service of this crown, as well as on various journeys by order of the oft-mentioned commander Koenad for treats to chappars, who had come here expressly for us with letters from His Majesty or other powerful Regents; and since the further reasons are expressed in that resolution, we take the liberty, with your highly honored approval, to refer to our resolutions concerning this, and meanwhile, From Persia, the 31st of October, Anno 1742. meanwhile to inform Your High Nobilities that, notwithstanding the report exhibited under date of the 5th of July by the Fiscal and two judicial members showing that two of the recently brought 19 casks of beer, namely one J. The poor box of this trading post having been opened by the frequently mentioned Fiscal and two judicial commissioners in the presence of the secretary of that court, there was found therein, according to the report dated the 11th of this month inserted in the resolution of the 12th, 68 pieces of rupees, which, in a sealed little bag marked B. D. A., were handed over loose to the ship's crew, but nevertheless are entered in the invoice and bill of lading; regarding which we most humbly request that those funds, together with the accompanying letter, may be delivered to the Reverend Brethren Deacons of the Christian congregation there through Your High Nobilities' gracious benevolence. Regarding the Company servants, it should be notified with all due respect that the bookkeeper and former provision-master Jacob Carelsz, upon his written petition, by resolution of 28 March, was granted not only his discharge from that post but also his dismissal from this directorate, departing on the ship the Cornelia together with the assistants Petrus Johannes Crappoel and Gerard Godfried van Aschen, released pursuant to the decrees of 4 September and 12 of this month, as well as Sergeant Daniel van Heetveld and Soldier Barent de Bruijn, because the term of indenture of the first three mentioned persons had expired, and the two last-mentioned, both through old age and persistent illnesses, could not acclimatize here, [now departing] over to Your High Nobles. In the meantime, at the first-mentioned session and later by decision of 31 May, the vacated post of bookkeeper was absolutely disposed of, and From Persia, 31 October Anno 1742. in the first-mentioned place was appointed, and thereby favored at his own request, the junior merchant and provisionally secretary Cornelis Bijleveld, for the reason that such has repeatedly been practical here, and it was not suitably possible to arrange otherwise. But considering that the chief mate and commander of the sloop de Valk, Claas Visser, on 12 June, and the captain of the ship the Cornelia, Gerrit Scheepbouwer, on 27 ditto, have gone the way of all flesh, and these vacant posts needed to be filled again with competent persons, therefore at the session of the 21st following, the second mate Bastiaan Molenaar was appointed provisional chief mate and commander of the said sloop, whose written petition for obtaining and confirmation in the said capacity now goes over to Your High Nobles. Meanwhile, on the 28th ditto, the last-mentioned post was disposed of, and for that was elected the captain of the wrecked vessel Ridderkerk, Jan Zion; the said vessel having been handed over under a proper transfer by the officers who were aboard her, while the ship the Cornelia was handed over to them in the presence of the Fiscal and judicial commissioners for further accountability. And since the said papers accompany the annexes to this, we shall, 289 From Persia, 31 October Anno 1742. to avoid further extension, most obediently refer to them, while also respectfully communicating that, due to the excessive negligence and daily debauches in drink of the chief surgeon assigned to this office, Arnoldus Johannes van Cuijlenburg, we were forced at the session of 31 May last to take measures by removing him from this shore and placing him as chief surgeon on the ship the Cornelia, and on the other hand appointing in his place the provisional ditto Abraham de Jonge, who had been assigned to that vessel, as he is a person of reasonable experience and good conduct. For these reasons, after a test given in the council of this office on 11 July following, he was also promoted from provisional and 24 guilders to absolute chief surgeon at 36 guilders per month. But since otherwise no noteworthy alterations have occurred among the servants at this office, nor on the ships, except solely some who, upon the expiration of their indenture time, were increased and improved in capacity and wages, we shall, with your kind permission, take the liberty of humbly referring to the enclosed copy of the record book along with the resolutions of 16 and 28 March, 25 April, From Persia, 31 October Anno 1742. 25 April, 31 May, 28 June, 11 July, 4 September, and 12 of this month, with the further information that the salvaged crew, mentioned earlier herein, of the ship Ridderskerk were properly placed on the cited vessel the Cornelia and the sloop de Valk; and all the Company servants assigned under this directorate as of the ultimate of June were found upon general muster to consist of: 213 heads, namely: 84 at Gamron 3 at Bassoura 2 at Boucher 3 at Spahan 100 on the ship the Cornelia, and 21 on the sloop de Valk. These qualified 213 persons, as stated above, make up according to custom the qualified muster roll for the esteemed speculation of Your High Nobles. Meanwhile, according to decrees of 31 May and 28 June, the youths Barend Karseboom of Enkhuizen and Simon van Veen of The Hague have been discharged from the seafaring service and transferred to clerical service, considering they are young boys of a fair wit and promise, and neither of them having yet reached the age of 14 years, consequently being quite able thoroughly to [learn] the Persian language.

291 Persia, the 31st of October, Anno 1742. humbly petitions the adjacent [request] to be able to learn to read and write, and from whom the Honorable Company in time may still expect much service in this Directorship, for which reason we nourish the hope that Your High Excellencies will graciously be pleased to approve this arrangement. Among the enclosures, there is respectfully presented to Your High Excellencies the petition sent to us under date of the 24th of August last from Bassoura by the Merchant and First Resident, the Honorable Abraham van Suchtelen, for further address, whereby he makes instance with very great earnestness and emphasis, that if, by the gracious benevolence of Your High Excellencies, he should not be appointed Senior Merchant and [illegible] authority, he may then obtain his discharge from this directorship on account of his pining away under many sicknesses and ailments, as also because his bonded term has already expired for three years. The ship's bookkeeper of the ship Cornelia, Galenus van Oordt, has, in conformity with Your High Excellencies' highly respected order, after having first discharged the cargo sent with it and accounted for by him, been relieved from that vessel in order henceforth to perform his service at the secretariat here. From Persia, the 31st of October, Anno 1742. And whose place was again filled by the aforementioned assistant from the wrecked small vessel Ridderskerk, by name Jan Hendrik Scheffer; likewise, through the death on the 10th of August of the second mate Bartholomeus van der Woude of Amsterdam, after examination held, the steward Jacob Cleebou of Dronthem entered into that service at a salary of 22 guilders, in whose last-mentioned place was again appointed Frans Verbauwen of Bruges, who, upon the expiration of his term, was favored with a new three-year contract at the appropriate wage of ƒ 20. The gunner of this trading post, Abraham van Giften, having gone on board the repeatedly mentioned vessel the Cornelia on the 23rd of September after long consent, was upon his return knocked overboard by the boom of the boat and very miserably perished. His body, having drifted ashore before this lodge three days after that sad event, was duly inspected by the chief surgeon, together with the fiscal and in the presence of judicial commissioners; but no malicious or suspicious wounds having been discovered, it was properly interred. And since by this fatal accident that place became vacant, and the boatswain's mate of the aforementioned vessel, Erasmus van der Meulen of Copenhagen, made petition for it, 293 From Persia, the 31st of October, Anno 1742. and came forward, he, being a vigilant person capable for that service, was favored with it, and in addition, by split of salary, was granted ƒ 20. His place as boatswain's mate was again filled by the quartermaster's mate Roelof Serk of Carelskroon, and he in turn was replaced by the quartermaster Coenraad Fredrik Somer of Lubeck, the former of whom was favored with a split of salary at ƒ 17 and the latter, by reason of expiration of term, with ƒ 14. In like manner, for the aforementioned reasons, the provisional second mate Petrus Adrianus van Oosterzee was promoted to absolute [second mate] at ƒ 26, and also on the sloop [illegible] to allow Marten Wout to pass over. From Persia the 31st of October Anno 1742: having taken that path, was under his flag, but that he would nevertheless subsequently cause a careful search to be made on board the ships, with the promise that in case he should discover that vagabond, he would then return him. But since the transaction in this matter is recorded more at large in a report submitted concerning it by the said officer in the resolution of the 4th of September, we shall therefore take the liberty, in order to avoid a too prolix extension, most obediently to refer thereto, with the further notification that likewise the assistant sailmaker of the vessel just cited, Andries Anker of Dronthem, having also taken that path, and having saved himself on board the European English ship the Britannia, we through the said officer made our serious complaints regarding this to the aforementioned English agent, pointing out that this was directly contrary to our concluded agreement, with threats that if this fugitive, whom we knew for certain was on board that ship, were not returned, reprisal would then also be taken by us by force, and thereby the cultivation of a good harmony would be broken, which we nevertheless assume would be estimated by the said Briton at more than ten such scoundrels. From Persia the 31st of October Anno 1742: continuation. Upon this he first caused us to be assured by the said envoy, but the next day in the morning by his interpreter, that if the mentioned deserter was on board the frequently mentioned ship, he would return him, provided he had received assurance beforehand or through us on parole of honor that we would do that person no harm in the world, because he would otherwise consider the contract broken; which we caused to be assured to that chief with great emphasis. Notwithstanding this solemn assurance, he sent his interpreter again in the afternoon with notification that the fugitive had been brought from on board to the shore in their lodge, and that he, Mr. Whitwell, was also prepared for his restitution, whenever we should once more assure him on word of honor that no harm would befall that person; which having been effected as already said above, shortly thereafter that perjured person was returned under an escort of 6 English grenadiers together with a sergeant and corporal in a very honorable manner. But because for the honor of our nation one could not let this generosity pass without some acknowledgment, From Persia the 31st of October Anno 1742: therefore the said military men were presented with a gratuity of 8 pieces of gold Moorish ducats, being at 18 mamudis each 144 mamudis, and which, calculated at 9 stivers the mamudi, being f 64:16, was debited to the account of the frequently mentioned deserter. Regarding judicial matters, little of note has occurred, other than solely that Lieutenant Frederik de Wild on 22 January, upon his departure for Batavia, and the book- and accounts-keeper Jacob Carelsz, pursuant to the political council resolution of 28 March of this year, were discharged at the session of this court on 18 April following, and on the other hand on the last-mentioned day, in accordance with the first-mentioned resolution, assistant and pay-bookkeeper Anthonij Scoffier was introduced and granted a seat as a member of this court, after he had first taken the oath pertaining thereto; while already previously, on 23 February, the donation causa mortis made by bookkeeper Jan Hendrik Puls to his colleague Frans Canter was approved, pursuant to the instrument executed for that purpose at this office on the 20th of that month before the First Clerk and certain witnesses. The same was likewise done upon the exhibition and examination of the powers of attorney executed on 5 May 1740, 3 and 6 November of the past year, and 1 March of this year, both at Batavia and Cochin as well as locally, on account of the death of the Junior Merchant and Assayer Anthonij Knol, Persia, 31 October Anno 1742. the provisionally appointed chief mate and commander of the chaloup De Valk, Claas Visscher, the skipper of the Cornelia, Gerrit Scheepbouwer, and the sick-visitor of that vessel, Claas Karseboom, on 14 May, 18 and 28 June, and 6 July; but as there was nothing to object thereto, the persons nominated by the aforementioned instruments were granted authority to enter upon those estates. In the same manner, the testamentary disposition dated 23 July of the past year made by the second mate Bartholomeus van der Woude was likewise upheld, having been approved on 11 August thereafter for the reasons just stated following his death. Meanwhile, certain creditors who had addressed this court and had a legitimate claim upon the estates of the assistant Pieter Roselaar and second mate Thobias Pieter Schrooder were not left unheard, but what was genuinely due to them from those inheritances was disbursed in accordance with the resolution of 18 April of the past year. in such manner as is also done with the claim of a certain Armenian woman named Chanum Jan, widow of the late Armenian Godja Gadjeik, amounting /: as has already been stated previously in humility :/ to the sum of M=s: 8613 7/10: at ƒ 3660: 17: 7 1/5: in principal, and with its accrued interest at 9/20 percent per month to M=s: 25677½ or ƒ 10942: 18: 12, together with and in addition to such M=s 6220: at ƒ 2642: 10: as were enjoyed by the aforementioned Van Leijpsig (deceased) from the estate of a certain Greek Christian, Constantijn Succa, but were likewise consumed; From Persia under date 31 October 1742 Further findings concerning the unweighed pepper transferred into the sloop de Valk, which remained aboard from the brought Batavia cargo with the departure of the yacht Ridderskerk on 12 October of the past year, together with an indication of which goods still remained aboard at the departure of that vessel on 5 January last, after the transport of the Commissioners Moesassar Alie Chan and Fat alie Beek, namely: black bantam pepper, according to the recently submitted findings, net lb 93518:- ergo, upon re-weighing and unloading of the pepper transferred from that vessel into the sloop, no more was found than - - lb 75016:- so that the result shows that the shortage, or what has still remained in Ridderskerk, is . . . . . . . . . lb 18502:- or calculated on the entire cargo of lb 250000, roughly 7 3/5 per cent. This shortfall must notoriously be attributed, on the one hand, to the defective unloading and the inability to unload that keel completely, successively caused by these insolent and wanton native oppressors; on the other hand, to a considerable quantity of dust in which this grain lies virtually buried, and therefore the sieving thereof is utterly necessary, as was cited at large and confirmed in the findings previously submitted here. But the most principal cause of all that has brought about this considerable underweight is the defective unloading at night, when the thievish hamals know how to play their role in a wondrous manner by stealing, no matter how much attention is paid. Also, the transfer from the ship into the sloop and the re-unloading thereof could not take place without spillage, on all of which points the undersigned humbly requests that consideration may be given. But since everyone was of the opinion that no decision could be taken in this regard before and until the said vessel Ridderskerk should have returned here to the roadstead, and it should truly be discovered how much had really gone missing, since it appeared that pepper had still remained in the ship; therefore the final disposition has been delayed and postponed until the return of the more-mentioned vessel Ridderskerk. On the other hand, consideration was given to the request and report of the Warehouse Master Willem Allard van Jongstal regarding the extraordinary dustiness of that grain, as had already appeared to him by experience; for upon testing of 3000 lb, he had discovered 25 lb of dust, or 75 per cent; therefore, for his peace of mind, instead of that grain being handled as is, it might be sieved by the Fiscal and the Committee members, because otherwise From Persia under date 31 October 1742 it was otherwise undeliverable, which was fully granted to him, with the dust falling therefrom to be dealt with according to custom. From Persia under date 31 October 1742 still entertained hope of being able to send along the remaining gold fabrics and velvets, but that there is little prospect of obtaining the still missing guineas. This matter having been considered, the same was approved, and those Residents shall be written to, that they must make every effort to obtain the goods that still remain unfulfilled, so that at last the honored petitions may be properly and completely fulfilled. Furthermore, the Honorable Commander brought to notice how he treated the matters in the dispatch on the 5th of this month of the couriers Hossein Pollat and Derwiet Hossen to His Highness Nihamed Tackie Chan with the copies of the letter of complaint to the King, item what had previously been written to him regarding that matter; the servants at Spahan having ordered the molla to remain at Casbien and not to go toward the court as the order had been set down by letter of 18 November of last year, so His 539 From Persia under date 31 October 1742 Honor submitted for consideration how one may best handle this matter for the welfare of the Honorable Company and for rectifying the affairs muddled by the said Spahan Residents, since assistance in this was partly requested from His Highness; he therefore thought it would be best to delay the continuation thereof until such time as an answer thereto shall have been received. Furthermore From Persia under date 31 October 1742 Furthermore, the commander brought before the members for communication how the shahbandar Mersa Haddie had come to make a request to purchase some pieces of cambric cloths for the beglerbegi Mhamet Tackie Chan (according to the raqam shown thereof to the commander); whereupon it was unanimously approved, since those cloths are not sent here for sale, but rather as gifts, to deliver 2 pieces to that gentleman for His Highness as a present, while making known that we have no more of them remaining, as we dare not undertake to refuse such, since at times a heavy burden could be brought upon our necks through such trifles. Furthermore, the Honourable Lord Commander submitted for reading a written report presented by the fiscal and judicial members concerning the pepper winnowing according to the Resolution of 10 February of last year, whereby it was found that out of a quantity of 231498 lb, 6015 lb or 2 1/0 percent of dust was collected; item that during that winnowing 2619 lb or 1/10 percent was wasted/spilt, which first-mentioned quantity of dust has, according to the aforesaid decision, been sacrificed to nothingness, as the report inserted below clearly shows.
