The commission has been conscientiously executed and I have fulfilled my duty, so that it only remains for me to subscribe myself, underneath was written: Honorable Commanding Lord and Lords, lower down: your Honors' ever obligated and humble servant, signed: Frederik Beeling, in the middle, signed in my presence: Isacq de Poorter, to the side, as commissioners, signed: Cornelis Bylevelt and Wolfert Lindeman, in the margin: Gamron, this 8 September Anno 1742, beside the heading: Exhibited in the Council of Policy at Gamron on 12 October Anno 1742, was signed: Cornelis Bylevelt, member of the council and provisional secretary. Hereafter a report was submitted by the dispensier and specially appointed commissioners concerning the poor condition of the horse harnesses, which paper contained the following: Honorable Commanding Lord and Lords. Pursuant to your Honors' esteemed order, we the undersigned, having been specially appointed thereto as commissioners, betook ourselves to the Honorable Company's horse stable, where the dispensier Cornelis Bylevelt showed us such suffocated, unusable, item very battered riding gear as is specifically recorded below: 1 piece English saddle of which almost all the straps are broken 1 piece leather saddle 1 piece green velvet saddle of which the top of the seat is completely in pieces, as is also the previous one thereof, saddle cloth and holster caps rotted and perished 1 piece Hindustani salpicado saddle, like the previous 1 piece Persian saddle belonging to the Honorable Company's interpreter, completely unusable 1 piece silver bridle, the 6 pieces complete, but the leather rotted and new is needed 1 piece ditto Homeland bridle, completely ditto 1 piece gilded bridle of which some small pieces are missing, leather new needed 1 piece ditto, as above 1 piece ditto of which a large piece is missing and the leather newly needed To the Honorable Lord Simon Clement Director of the Persian Directorship along with the Council From Persia under date 31 October 1742. The saddlecloths needing some repair, the same was found by us in the presence of the said storekeeper, underneath was written: Honorable Commanding Lords, we hope to have executed the commission imposed upon us to satisfaction, wherefore we presume to take the honor of being and remaining, underneath was written: your Honors' humble, obedient, and faithful servants, was signed: Jan Hendrik Dankers and Pieter Kuypen, in the margin: Gamron, 6 September Anno 1742, beside the heading: Exhibited and served in the Council of Policy at Gamron on 12 October Anno 1742, was signed: Cornelis Bylevelt, member of the council and provisional secretary. Thus, after this was deliberated upon at length, it was resolved to have the said storekeeper perform the necessary repairs thereon in the most frugal manner, since it could very easily be verified that through continuous visits these harnesses were bound to wear out, and note was also taken that this ought to be done for the preservation of the Honorable Company's precious prestige, and for all which reasons the melting down of the old silver bridle known from the said report, as well as making a new ditto in its place with the addition of some silver, was also resolved, since this riding gear could not be dispensed with in the welcoming of guests or the paying of local visits. Honorable Sir and Gentlemen, The manner in which the undersigned have obeyed the known orders of the Honorable Company and on that subject the instructions received from Your Honors is hereby evident, for we have, in the presence of the provisional Fiscal Emanuel de Poorter, inspected as thoroughly as possible the ship Cornelia, lying ready to sail for Batavia, but discovered nothing irregular therein, although the same draws 17 feet forward and 19 feet aft, and likewise, upon the mustering of the crew, no one was found absent. Persia, 29 June 1743 Although we have sent the duplicate by the Cornelia, we nevertheless take the liberty, for the sake of certainty, to offer most humbly the duplicate thereof, together with this our obedient report, to Your Right Honourable, Highly Esteemed Sirs, with further dutiful reply by English notification that since that time, namely on 16 March last, with the English ship the Cerem, supercargo Cradox, via Malabar, we have seen ourselves honoured with the receipt of Your High Noble Honours' esteemed letter of 30 September of the past year in original and duplicate. All the esteemed nominated appendices are in accordance with the general register, and among other things we found added thereto, out of obligation, two extract letters by the Right Honourable, Highly Esteemed Gentlemen Directors, dated 28 September and 13 December 1741, to Your Right Honourable, Highly Esteemed Sirs, together with an original circular letter written to the Governors and Directors of the Western Offices. Moreover, on the said day via Ceylon, we were honoured with two sealed packets brought there by the ships 't Wapen van Hoorn and 's-Heeren Arendskerke, in which, according to the registers that had been attached thereto, we found two extract letters of 15 March and 13 October 1741, likewise addressed by Their Honourable, Highly Esteemed Sirs to Your Honours, in the company of two identical demands for the year 1742, a yield concerning the sale of 4960 lb of Kerman wool with a profit of 56 5/8 percent, together with various sales notes, bills and price currents. And whereas from the extract of 13 December 1741 we have learned, to our particular obligation, of Their Right Honourable, Highly Esteemed Sirs' honoured decision concerning the momentous chief government of the Indies, and among other things the honourable election of His Honour, the High Noble, Right Honourable Sir Gustaaff Willem Baron van Imhoff to Governor-General of the entire Netherlands Indies, and as, upon the request made by the Lords and Masters, the said His High Honour was to undertake the voyage to the main seat of the Indies with the Easter ships in that highly distinguished dignity, we are in full hope that the frequently mentioned His High Honour, long before the delivery of this letter, will have enjoyed a speedy and prosperous voyage in health and contentment, and will have already obtained the transfer of the general government from the hands of His Honour Johannes Thedens. Therefore, we most obediently take the liberty to congratulate the frequently mentioned His Honour van Imhoff most heartily from the bottom of our souls on his safe arrival and the assumption of the chief government, wishing him Jehovah's bountiful blessing, good fortune, and prosperity, so that the state of the General Company may once again flourish as in days of old under his blessed administration, to the well-being of the Honourable Company and to the singular honour and glory of His High Honour's illustrious person in particular. Furthermore, we were pleased to learn from that highly esteemed extract of the promotion to ordinary councillors of the Right Honourable, Highly Esteemed Sirs Elias Guillot, Mr. Nicolaas van Berendregt, and Maurits van Aarden, as well as to extraordinary councillors of the Right Honourable Sirs Mr. Jacob Lakeman, Julius Valentyn Stein van Gollenesse, Thomas van Spreekens, Daniel van Overbeek, and Johannes Mattheus Cluysenaar. But that the 5082 lb of cinnamon sent from here with De Ketel was found to be in such a state as appears from a certain report of the 16th of June, as well as the citations in the repeatedly mentioned honored letter of the 30th of September of the past year, has affected us particularly. We would have called the provisional warehouse master at the time, Willem Allard van Jongstal, to account regarding this committed negligence, but he was in a mortally weak condition, suffering from dropsy, by which his brains were so troubled that he was not in a state to give satisfactory and cogent reasons concerning this conduct of his, he having also, a few days after the receipt of the aforesaid letter, namely on the 28th of March last, gone the way of all flesh, and thus become freed from all further inquiry. 23 From Persia, the 29th of June 1747. We most obediently request that it may not displease Your High Right Worships that it be demonstrated and shown by us in all humility that the gift presented at Bassoura to Agmed Pasha of ƒ6598:2:8, to the restitution and compensation of which Your High Right Worships have been pleased to condemn us, with recourse against the Residents residing there, was truly spent for the benefit and well-being, as well as the great honor and respect of Persia, the 29th of June 1743. For the so gracious release and discharge of the 108 lb cinnamon found short at the discharge of the Steenhoven, the soundness and truth of which was verified with solemn oath according to the order in council on 11 April last by the then acting warehouse master Christoffel de Haan and the Under-Merchant and ordinary committee member Egbertus Legrand; as also for the discharge of the excess charged beyond a capital advance on the 600 lb suffocated pepper from the cargo of Middenrak; item 2 capitals of 323 pieces suffocated gunnies and 75 percent of a barrel of soured beer from the cargo of Steenhoven, we are exceptionally obliged to Your High Noblenesses, with the humble wish that further, with similar grace and reply to this by Your High Noblenesses, for the relief of Persia the 29th of June 1743 our poor servants, they may be benefited. The prolongation of the Charter, item the prohibition concerning the private opium trade, as well as the act of Impunity concerning the purchase of offices, was made known to the people by publication and posting the day after receipt of the honored order, namely on 17 March, to the end that everyone will be able to govern himself accordingly; but of cooperage one is entirely destitute here, since the arrack leggers and smaller casks are constantly being employed for the service of this lodge for fetching drinking water, so that to our regret we cannot comply with this order. From Persia, the 29th of June 1743 continuation and hiring English, French, or Moorish vessels is not only impossible because those hulls, for the most part heavily freighted by private merchants here in passing, call here and, thus laden, have departed for Bassoura or Boucher, since they were hired for those places; should it now happen that they partially unload here, the profits would scarcely cover the freight charges, considering that the Honourable Company's merchandise consists exceedingly of large and heavy voluminous goods. On the contrary, agreements are made with merchants permitting them to ship a certain valuable portion with a much smaller quantity of large packaging in such vessels; namely, a merchant has a small box of pearls or diamonds, for which he must pay as much freight charge as if it were large packaging, and then only a certain quantity of voluminous goods is granted to him. It is also well understood that the freight charges must be regulated, because otherwise those merchants would find it impossible to make their voyages profitable. When it now happens that a vessel of those nations is completely unloaded here, they will not readily lease it to us, since they then commonly From Persia, the 29th of June 1743 commonly intend to be in Bengal or on the Coast early in the season, or indeed in China. We have already made a trial of this in the aforementioned year before the ship Cornelia was, through leakage of the chaloup, routed via Boucher to Bassoura. However, the effort we applied was in vain, as we had the honour to inform Your Right Noblenesses by our humble letter of 30 October of the past year. And as to what relates to pre-advising the ships at Muscat, we most obediently submit that this would not be advisable, because presently Muscat, alongside [illegible], belongs to the Persian. But it would be good that the ships remain anchored behind the Island of Ormus until the commanders, by means of the boat or bark sent to us by them, obtain word whether they can safely come here or not. And it would be even better if we annually received a small vessel of 110 to 120 feet expressly for Bassoura and Boucher, outside the demand for this factory, in which all the goods required for the said factories were laden; whereupon we, if we noticed any difficulty, could immediately dispatch it with From Persia, the 29th of June 1743 a letter of conveyance to one of the two places, and give the necessary orders to the servants overland with couriers. In which case the chaloup and its crew could well be dispensed with here, and the expenses of hamalage, bark freight, leakage, etc., saved, whereby we would also be freed from the borrowing of the same. If difficulties should now arise regarding the demand, we could have it unloaded as swiftly as possible (properly understood, if assisted with the aforementioned vessels and Moors), and send it back in ballast to Your Right Noblenesses with a short letter of conveyance, since we will not need to fear any monsoon; and then a complete report of this directorship can be delivered with the Bassoura ship. If it were now the case that we suspected any danger in its calling here, we would send our humble reports for Your Right Noblenesses to the overland residents, and in addition give them orders as to how they should act with the dispatch of that hull. Meanwhile, we hope that our lengthy reply added hereto will not displease Your Right Noblenesses, as the importance of the matter requires it. From Persia, 29 June 1743 Wherewith etc. Extract from the missive sent by the Assembly of the Gentlemen Seventeen to the Governor-General and Council of the Indies, dated 15 March 1741. Honorable, Valiant, etc. Our last letter to Your Honor was dated 2 December of last year, and having been dispatched with several ships, we do not doubt that it will have reached Your Honor's hands before the receipt of this one; wherefore we refer to its contents, etc. And since the state of the Honorable Company, particularly in the Indies, has now fallen into such great decline that it seems to portend the total ruin and downfall of the Company, and consequently, if it ever was time, it is now time to put the hand to the plow and— As soon as the adjacent formidable order reached us, we commissioned and instructed the Fiscal Emanuel de Poorter and the Secretary of the Court of Justice Cornelis Bylevelt to investigate and provide an exact written report of how many servants—in accordance with a certain regulation established by Resolution dated 20 August 1678 by their High Nobilities, according to the statement of the Director of Persia at that time, Fredrik Lambertsz Bent—were deemed necessary for this directorate and consequently permitted; as well as how many are presently on hand, to what services they are employed, and how many are truly needed, or which could easily be spared. This assigned commission was duly carried out by them, and a written report thereof was presented at the session on the ultimate of May of the current year. Following which, begging for a favorable interpretation, we shall take the liberty to conform most obediently to this report, which together with this accompanies the other annexes; and in the meantime further request to be excused that, due to the absence of the known regulation of the year 1678, our humble remarks— From Persia, 29 June 1743 —aim, with fervent prayers, and true intention and necessity, that it may please His Divine Majesty to inspire such blessed expedients in Your Noble High Reverences, as well as all of Your Noble High Reverences' servants, whereby not only the total ruin of the Honorable Company may be prevented, but its state made even better than in former times; and to free the Company therefrom, if God wills, and on the contrary, with God's blessing, to cause it once again to revive and restore it to its former flourishing state. Thus, for the attainment of that wholesome and so highly necessary aim, with which we here in the fatherland are currently occupied, we have seen fit to order Your Honor to take into serious consideration and examine exactly what abuses have crept into the management of the Company in the Indies against the known regulation of the years 1680 and 1688, and which, over and above these, are presently still in vogue; as well as what means of redress have already been put into effect against them, and could and ought still to be put into effect. 7 From Persia the 29 June 1747 Persia Some of the adjacent equipment goods have been sent to us through the goodness of Your Right Honourables with the ships Kronenburg and Ketel, to the amount of ƒ 18140:19:—, which have been sold to the Crown for ƒ 54570:17:—, thus with an advance of 200 14/3 per cent, or ƒ 36429:18:—. But of the said ƒ 54570:17:— only ƒ 48637:—:14 has been collected so far, so that on the part of the bearer of this there still remains outstanding ƒ 5937:16:2. Regarding the collection thereof, no difficulty resides to this day, as the thought money comes in daily with 10 to 15 tomans, ƒ 425:—:— to ƒ 627:10:— at a time, so that we have hope to see this debit cleared soon. But we are very pleased that no ship was built, because not only would we have had great trouble and effort to satisfy the costs thereof, as presently appears by the collection of the aforesaid cash on account of the delivered equipment goods, but also because we fear with sound reason that when His Majesty comes to discover the deceptions practiced by the English in their ship sales, it will turn out very badly for them and for all ship sellers. What happened recently can already serve as a warning for the future to the English, as recently by order of the King 2000 tomans or ƒ 85000:— were taken from them by force, because in their recent ship sale they charged His Majesty more, but shared the same with the Beglerbegi Tackie, which was reported to the King by Duke Calabie Chan, who thereupon ordered that they be made to pay the said money or else that the said ships should be returned. But because before the arrival of that order one had already remained lost, the English remained unmolested by payment of the mentioned ƒ 85000:—:—, but how it will turn out with them in the future one must await. What was resolved by Your Honour, contained in your missive of 12 January 1740 to us regarding the exorbitant demand of the Beglerbegi on the Gamron ministers, which is not only done to have a new ship with its appurtenances and on top of that various equipment goods such as anchors and rope, iron, etc., we can rather approve and accommodate, as Your Honour acted therein according to the circumstances of the time, than that we could grant such approval over what was written and executed by the said ministers concerning the further trade. Extract from just as above dated 28 September Anno 1741 containing the matter of the aforesaid missive, was signed Nicolaas Hartman. and From Persia the 29 June 1743 The consumption of mace is not only sober, but in this entire directorship no more than 60¾ lb was sold, whereof 15 in loco, 56¼ at Bushire, 67¾ lb just as Your Honour Right Venerable may see in more detail in the annual returns, the costly fruit being used by the native only for the preparation of medicines, since they otherwise know of no use to give to it, because instead [illegible] For not to speak of what they come to mention in their letter of 25 February 1739 regarding the mace, that its consumption everywhere in this directorship is sober, since in five years no more than 1223 lb was sold; item regarding the cloths, that their consumption at Gamron had nevertheless succeeded tolerably, in which the outer comptoirs [illegible] by the large supply of the English (which we take the liberty and leave to place under the old and known song) is what we leave in its place (yet it is not to be understood with sound brains, much less to be reconciled with the truth) what the abovementioned ministers use in their letters etc. regarding the mace. As regards the consumption of cloths, we had good hopes thereof at the dispatch of our general demand dated 31 March 1741, which was why we requested 200 pieces of Dutch and 50 pieces of English ditto from Your Right Honourables. Hereupon we received 25 pieces with the ship the Cornelia, but upon inspection they were found to be very bad in assortment and extremely expensive. Besides this, on 12 August of the past year an English European ship, the Britannia, directly in 5½ months' time from England brought a whole shipload, which was followed on 2 September by the Salisbury, whose cargo also consisted of nothing other than cloths and perpetuanas, which was dealt with so poorly by the English, as will be communicated more broadly hereafter in the article of trade and that of the foreign nations, which we take the liberty and leave under submission to conduct ourselves accordingly, while we must testify to our sorrow that for the present there is very little buying of cloths here, because of the heavy supply from that area by our repeatedly mentioned competitors in Isfahan; item the arrival of two ships mostly laden with cloths directly from England through Muscovy over the Volga for the newly established English Company at Gilan on the Caspian Sea, whereby these lands are becoming overcrowded with that manufacture. Therefore, for the ruin of the said new British Company, their agent here, Mr. Nathanael Whitwell, has been ordered in writing to sell [illegible] by the newcomers at Gilan, even though only a small profit might fall on it, because they hope through this to trip their feet, but whether that will turn out according to wish time must tell. 9 From Persia the 29 June 1743 stated disasters in this trade, so will the ministers in another letter of 18 May 1739 in the marginal reply to our letter of 17 September 1737 regarding the coffee again bring forward, firstly that the Ceylon sort would find a better sale than the Javanese, and secondly that this fruit would be subject to decay, wherefore they again had not dared to demand more than a remnant of the 1843 lb sent to Bassoura and Boucher of 9000 lb, since currently in Europe the well-dried Javanese coffee is preferred by the enthusiasts over the Ceylon, and the reason is clear, since the Ceylon is never so dry, and especially in such a small trajectory as from Colombo to Souratta, cannot possibly be so dry, besides that the Ceylon coffee finds a better sale than the Javanese is a matter that is daily experienced here, and the reason for that is because the Ceylon beans are small and round, and also very closely approach the Mocha in shape, which are sought by coffee adulterators for mixing under the Mocha beans, whereas on the contrary the Javanese by their size and flatness stand out too much and thus are recognizable; but if we are to write the pure truth in the subject matter, so must we to our soul's grief testify, as already has been most humbly done beside the said reply, that we do not believe any notable consumption of both sorts can be brought about in this directorship, at least not as long as the Moorish ships and trankis are able to bring those directly from Mocha to Bandar Abbas fresh, and that at very low prices, so that the bales are sometimes sold at 10 to 45 and also indeed for mr. 14 to mr. 15, f 5:19:0 to f 6:15:- according to whether the supply is large or small. Currently there is, through the Muscat rebellion, little in town and therefore also dear, through which we have obtained the opportunity to dispose of 4000 lb of Ceylon beans, which remained here from a small parcel from Colombo, although they were not favorable, being high brown and withered, and also diminished, at mr. 4 10 8 or indeed the pound at f 11:5 1/2 light money, giving a profit in the net of 65 1/5 percent, and according to the books 98 percent. But we flatter ourselves, if we were to receive those beans green, that possibly even a better sale would occur, because the green Mocha coffee is likewise preferred by the native over the old, as they presume that there is an acquired taste therein, the elderly residents even being so fond of the new greenish coffee that they will give 2 to f - 10 more for it. From Persia, 29 June 1745 We have been fortunate enough to succeed in the sale of 17765 lb of Javanese coffee at f 5:49:- per 25 lb, or per lb, which, to our knowledge, yields a net surplus profit of 17 1/3 per cent, in accordance with the books, at f -:4: 12 15/16. The Bushire commissioners reported by letter of 7 October that they were in good spirits regarding the sale of the 9843 lb of Ceylon produce received. However, in a later letter of 30 January they state that good, dry coffee, stored in a dry place, would not be subject to such decay, but that great care will have to be exercised with the sale of the said beans, since the good courage previously had was dampened because the opening of some bales with brown and musty beans deterred the inclined merchant, so that there is currently no further demand for it. Nevertheless, they promise that they will employ all possible diligence, zeal, and means to dispose of that fruit at a reasonable advantage—as there is also a scarcity of the Mocha crop—which they most heartily desire to communicate shortly to Your Right Honourable Excellencies. The commissioners have now requested 2000 lb of Javanese coffee, and we have requested from Ceylon 12000 lb of new, greenish, but above all not year-old beans for our subordinate offices, with which we will first make a trial of its sale. If we are so fortunate as to succeed in this according to our humble opinion and hearty desire, we shall not fail to exert our utmost best to accustom the locals to that crop, so that we may finally fulfill what Your Right Honourable Excellencies have repeatedly written regarding this important matter, and so that the greatest expectations regarding the sale of that fruit in Persia should not come to naught. As a new reason for the request of the said ministers to send them a person who has knowledge of silk to serve them and assist them in the purchase of that yarn—of which they admit they do not have the proper knowledge—it seems to us much more reasonable to recommend that Your Excellencies provide the said ministers from Bengal or some other suitable place in the Indies with such a capable person. We have received their notification, but as we have not been able, permitted, or dared to conduct any trade in silk up to now, as we most humbly communicated recently by submissive letter of 31 October of the past year, the said person is out of employment here, serving as a silk worker. However, as this person is for the most part ailing and his contract has also already expired, he frequently comes to beg us very humbly for his discharge. But because we hope to obtain another person shortly upon our requisition of 31 March 1741, we try to satisfy him with good words and promises, since without obtaining another person with knowledge of silk, we do not dare undertake to grant him his discharge. All the more so because until now, by two Royal fiats received on the 9th of this month addressed to His Highness Mohammad Taqi Khan and to us, granted by His Majesty regarding the silk contract and further requests, we have been referred as described extensively below under the article on the silk trade. Therefore we remain profoundly desirous, but we fear that the new English factors at Gilan, where the best silk is found, will be very detrimental to us here, since according to rumors they have agreed with the monarch to export silk instead of money upon payment of a 5 per cent toll. We fear that this harmful contract will sooner or later fall to the Company's detriment as well, especially if we obstinately refuse the Persian certain conveniences or fail to provide the customary gifts. From Persia, 29 June 1743 Cake copper, which formerly was available in Bushire in abundance at 6 3/4 lb for ms. 10:- to fl. 5 1/2, has risen to ms. 17:- or fl. 74:8:- for the said pounds, and it is still sought after and bought up with great eagerness by the English at the aforesaid prices, and transported to the Coasts of Coromandel, Malabar, and also Bengal, on which, according to what they say, they still make 2 to 7 per cent profit in the said places. Coined money was bartered against copper prices at a 25 per cent loss, since according to their accounts they find better profit in the said specie. We had the opportunity here to continue the copper trade for the Company with a small quantity of that mineral, namely 2400 lb, which could be procured for ms. 15 1/2 or f 6:11:12, but since according to the communicated Coromandel price 30 1/2 per cent was to be lost thereon, we have refrained from purchasing it until further notice. To Your Right Honourable Excellencies we are most obliged for the favorable approval of the adjoining method, which has already been brought into use by order of Your Excellencies. According to the letters of the said ministers in the above-mentioned letter of 25 February 1739, it appears that they were well pleased with the melting and casting of copper works into cakes for Nagapattinam, and they approve of continuing this method. Furthermore, radix China should henceforth, according to their opinion, be packed in sugar at Batavia for the better preservation of that root; and when pepper is to be sent to Persia, the Bantam variety should be employed for that purpose, as the ministers judge it to be the most sought-after and preferable over the Malabar sort. Since the year 1740, through your goodness, we have received 1534327 lb of Bantam pepper, of which under date of the last of May only 3890 lb remains. Persia, the 29th of June 1743 From Palembang We shall take careful heed in the future, when drawing up the requests for necessities, not to demand more than what is truly needed, in order thereby to comply with the adjacent high and formidable orders. Further extract from and to as before under the subject of: Your Honours have also done well to recommend to the servants to exercise somewhat more attentiveness in drawing up their request for necessities, and not to proceed therein as thoughtlessly as they had done the last time; but since this is a general defect at all the offices in the Indies, Your Honours are most earnestly recommended to hold all the servants to it, to the end that in their request they demand and specify no other or more goods and cash than those which they truly need. Extract 43 From Persia, the 29th of June 1743 Extract from the letter written by the assembly of the Gentlemen Seventeen in Amsterdam to the Governor-General and Council of the Indies at Batavia, of the 13th of December 1741. Valiant, Noble, etc. Our last letter to Your Honours having been of the 28th of September and the 13th of October last, which have already been dispatched with several ships, we do not doubt that it will have come to Your Honours' hands long before the receipt of this. We have read with attention what was set down in your general letter of the 10th of January 1741 with relation to Your Honours' resolution of the 6th of April prior, regarding the From Persia, the 29th of June 1743 payment of funds from insolvent estates or inheritances of deceased Company servants to their creditors in the Indies upon judgments of the judge there; regarding which we thought we had explained ourselves repeatedly, but especially most recently in our letter of the 4th of September 1739, so clearly that we had not expected that Your Honours, by far-fetched arguments, would undertake to thwart our aforesaid orders, grounded upon the old regulations, good reasons, and equity, and to render them completely fruitless; being far more intent on favoring private trade through a new invention in this matter (for whence do these heavy Indies debts usually arise, or are the funds taken up for that purpose) than on helping to counter and prevent them through an obedient execution of our order, so often reiterated. It does not please us to argue at length anew over that matter, much less to debate the new measures regarding it recently devised by Your Honours, although otherwise cogent arguments enough could be brought forward for that purpose; but we will and desire that our aforesaid order of the 4th of November 1739 shall above all be strictly followed and complied with in all parts, causing to be reimbursed into the Company's treasury all that 45 From Persia, the 29th of June 1743 of that nature has been paid in the Indies and is mentioned in the transmitted list, without burdening the Company with interest on those funds, entering the net amount in the pay-books to each person's account without carrying forward the balance, for henceforth no heed shall be paid to that, but the current account of the deceased for the balance shall immediately be credited here in this country; and everything that has been put into effect pursuant to Your Honours' resolution of the 26th of April 1740, both as to the obtaining of letters requisitorial and the proceedings already initiated and those that might yet follow, must be suspended immediately and entirely annulled, the Indies creditors being able and required to institute their actions

From Persia the 29 June 1743 Therefore we have the honor with this honorable [letter] alongside which we are honored, we must say to our regret that it is impossible in this realm to follow or comply with, since sometimes such deceased persons have their estates mixed with the natives, and one would be forced by violence, to the damage and disrespect of the Honorable Company, to pay their debts, because the Persian pays little heed to our laws; for, Right Honorable Sirs, spoken with due reverence and respectful esteem, we are in this realm merely foreign guests and therefore also obliged to observe the laws of this country, but completely unauthorized to make or introduce new ones. Therefore we request that we may be excluded and permitted to handle such estates as has always been customary here previously, which may never be refused unless lawful reasons to the contrary apply, which we have thus absolutely understood, not being inclined to admit any remonstrances against this. We hope and heartily desire that His Excellency the Right Honorable Lord Gustaaf Willem Baron van Imhoff, having arrived healthy and fresh at the chief seat of the Indies long before these [presents] without encountering any obstacles, has consequently also assumed the general government over these Netherlands regions, and it is considered that by the High Government and considering that, since the Lord of Imhoff upon our urgent request made to him has allowed himself to be persuaded to undertake the voyage back to Batavia against next Easter as Governor-General and to accept the heavy and weighty administration of the said His Excellency, and to congratulate from the bottom of our hearts and to wish God's precious blessing upon his government, accompanied by sound physical strength, so that this illustrious office may be ruled and directed by His aforementioned Excellency with fame, honor, splendor, and utility for the well-being of the Honorable Company.
