to Persia under date 29 June 1743 of this the crew members the remaining 6½ per cent, counting the dust and debris to pay the price the alongside here 18 per cent dust counted therewith some [illegible] All delivered ashore in good condition and therefore also such packages were salvaged, along with the following which without weight and solely by piece count were sent hither and consist of what follows, namely: 1 pack with chintzes amberha containing 150 pieces, according to the Invoice, arrived well and undamaged 1 chest with pattern cloths, 36 pieces turned out Cloves according to the Invoice: lb 5000:- And of this there was found net on the scales: 4643: 8. Thus there is a shortage of: lb 356¼ charged to account, yielding in total 75 lb net of dust gathered therefrom, and for which the ship's officers come to present very probable reasons, such as that this cargo was first exposed to the great heat of the ship's hold during its transport from Gamron to here, and thereafter also in the open lighters exposed to the scorching heat of the sun, sometimes for as many as five and even six days during its unloading, and for that reason it must have dried out, over and above the fact that its chests, although repaired aboard ship prior to their unloading, nevertheless split apart through the rough handling of the boatmen and coolies, and some of them with broken lids were brought ashore here by the ordinary tollhouse coolies in the company of the European boatmasters, so that in the lighters and during the carrying up much must have been scattered and lost through their cracks and splits, not to mention that during its handling, pouring, garbling, and bringing to the scale, against all precautions used according to our abilities, some might have been crushed to powder and blown away by its common dustiness, and finally on top of all that, as appears from an annexed declaration, an amount of 278 lb, or 5 1/5 percent, of pure clove dust is found under that short weight, so that when this is subtracted from this whole quantity of cloves, there solely appears to be an actual shortage of 1 19/40 percent, and which deficit the ship's officers most humbly petition may be validated to them in consideration of the reasons given for it. Nutmegs, the Invoice dictates: lb 4000:- and the weight here net: 3954¾ is validated [illegible] percent, under which the dust gathered therefrom is included, consequently short: lb 45¼ and concerning this the same reasons are brought forward regarding the drying out as were resolved for the cloves, since its chests likewise came ashore here with open cracks and splits, and consequently much of its usual lime must have come loose and been lost through those open places, both from the working of the chests during their loading into the lighters and from the carrying up of the same, besides the fact that this spicy fruit was found to be somewhat infested with mites, which also caused that, during pouring and delivering, a quantity of 37½ lb of dust, yielding on this whole quantity only 1/16 net, was gathered and prepared for dispatch; so when that dust is subtracted from its whole shortage, it actually only appears that 7¾ lb, or [illegible] per cent, has been lost, and therefore the ship's officers hope to remain freed from that charge. Please turn over.

367 Persia, under date 29 June 1743 Of the short-delivered 25 lbs with the order having been carried out and therefore they shall also have to compensate for the same at purchase price, notwithstanding the usual charges that have been incurred or are still to be incurred, performance having been fully made in [illegible] the unloading of Bushehr and Basra, having remained in the said vessel, and therefore by drying out also subjected to greater loss of weight than others, which has been validated, yet the remaining 4¼ hundredweight placed to the charge of the ship's crew, as also Ceylon Cinnamon: the invoice notes . . . lbs 960: — and delivered here at the scale only . . . lbs 884:½ thus less . . . lbs 75½ — And yields percent 7 7/8 percent, for which loss of weight the ship's officers cite as reasons the uncommonly bad packaging of this fragrant bark, which, instead of the customary practice of using first gunny and then leather, is now only covered with single, loose gunny, and was thereby very subject to the thefts of the boatmen and coolies, as well as to crushing and turning to dust, and on top of all that, in the hottest part of the year when it was unloaded, and in the completely open lighters, by the fierce heat of the sun, it was forced to dry out with great severity, and thus, against all precautions taken, this loss of weight was caused, so that in this regard a gracious consideration is also most humbly requested by the ship's officers. Black Bantam Pepper: according to the invoice should have remained in the ship at Batavia . . . lbs 250,000: of which was lightened at Bandar-e Bushehr . . . lbs 100,000: and at Basra, with the contents of the sealed pepper bag, delivered at the scale in total, net . . . lbs 132,233: comes together to . . . lbs 232,233 so that there is a shortage of . . . lbs 17,767 Purchase price on account: of this, comes according to Bandar-e Bushehr proportionally to the debit of . . . lbs 7,107:— and Basra . . . lbs 10,660: — thus together the aforesaid quantity of . . . lbs 17,767:— Amounting, together with the dust that came out of it, to 7 1/8 percent in total, while the ship's officers give as reasons for this reduction that, besides the considerable drying out in the hot ship's hold and the lighters, very much was also wasted and lost through the handling and garbling of it, because it was uncommonly dusty, from which, according to an annexed declaration, 3,553½ lbs of dust had to be garbled, not counting that this shortage—although it was caused to be shipped in double gunny bags—nevertheless, through the looseness of the gunny, was noticeably scattered both in the lighters, in which it sometimes had to remain for a longer time due to contrary winds and the further distance from the ship, and during the carrying up to the Company's lodge, and moreover—notwithstanding that this was prevented as much as possible— was subject to the deft thefts of the boatmen and coolies, for which reasons a great reduction must have arisen from all these causes, and this appears even more clearly from the finding of the sample bag that was given sealed to the ship's officers by the administrator and commissioners of the island of Onrust, and on which a loss in weight and dust together, according to an annexed declaration, of percent [illegible] was discovered here; therefore the ship's officers very humbly request that this may be taken into consideration and that a favorable clearance may follow upon it. Gum lac Bengal according to the invoice lb 1704: ¼ yet here found on the scale only 1661: ¼ falls short lb 42½ allowed at the rate of 23 shillings, and for which the same reasons in truth can be given as were adduced just now in respect of the gum lac Siam, considering it has been subjected to the same. Benzoin ordinary white there should be according to the invoice 3357: — and upon its weighing here only found 3304: — Shortage lb 53: — which deficiency is principally caused by the uncommonly bad condition of the chests, which were generally much shifted and burst apart from one another, seeing that thereby as well as by the entirely rough handling of the boatmen and coolies several cases were broken and turned to dust, besides and apart from that gum in the open craft having heavily dried out from the heat of the sun and thus produced that shortage in weight; shall GG 369 Persia, under date 29 June 1743 From ƒ validated 11 per cent all received in good condition. 71 371 From Persia, dated 29 June 1743 of the clove dust found, by two similar writings, the first regarding the inspection upon the arrival of the ship Duyfje, as well as during the general unloading, of the pepper dust found to a quantity of 3553½ lb, which according to the order was cast into the sea and thrown away; as well as another regarding the dust found in the sample bag also sent from Batavia, all which documents, because of their importance, are granted a place here, and first the declaration concerning the cloves. Today, the 8th of November, in the year 1742 We, the undersigned, Cornelis Sonneveld, bookkeeper and storekeeper of the office, and Hieronimus Winder, ship's bookkeeper stationed on the Honourable Company's vessel the Duyfje, declare and certify that, owing to the absence of the Under-Merchant and Secunde Willem Dumee and the ship's captain of the said vessel, Willem Noseman, by order and in the presence of the Merchant and Resident Chief Abraham van Suchtelen, successively or rather from the 5th of October until the 6th of this month, when the cloves from the cargo of the aforesaid ship the Duyfje were brought to this shore, we cleaned the same of their extraordinary dust before they were brought to the scales here; and subsequently, out of their entire quantity of 50000 written from Gamron, having been enclosed in 40 chests, with all possible care, attention, and caution, we accurately gathered an amount of 278 lb of dust, making 5/5 stivers per hundred, and packed it properly in a double canvas bag, further sealing its top binding with the Honourable Company's and our signets, and handling everything concerning it carefully and with the utmost attentiveness; and because this contains the pure and sincere truth, we are at all times, whenever it may be required, prepared to confirm this our statement under oath. Thus handled and its execution declared at the office of Bassoura, on the day, month, and year aforesaid. Was signed: Hieronimus Winder and Cornelis Sonneveld. In the margin: In my presence. Was signed: Abraham van Suchtelen. Today, the 30th of November 1743, we, the undersigned, Willem Dumee, Under-Merchant and Secunde, and Hendrik Dideloff Bak, assistant at this office, declare and certify that by order of the Merchant and Resident Chief Abraham van Suchtelen, on the 3rd of October last, we went with some chests, for lack of pepper harps, on board the ship the Duyfje lying anchored in this river Euphrates, and there, in our presence as well as in the presence of the captain stationed on the said ship, Willem Noseman, and First Mate Albert Verstraten, on the 4th of October recently passed, we had the ship's crew begin the sifting of such pepper as, after the unloaded 100000 lb at Bendher à Boucher out of a quantity of 250000 lb shipped at the island of Onrust for this directorate in the mentioned vessel, still remained for this office; and with which, following its entire unloading, work having been completed on the 24th of this month, there was found by us at the scales to have come forth from this entire parcel an amount of 3553½ lb of natural pepper dust, which, pursuant to the highly venerated order of Their High Noble, Respected, Highly Esteemed authorities at Batavia contained in their highly valued letter of the date 6 November 1741, was thereafter cast into the sea in all our presence; having declared this according to the pure truth, we are also prepared, if required, to substantiate the same under oath. Thus handled and found in the office of Bassoura, on the day, month, and year as in the heading. Below stood: In the presence of. Was signed: Willem Dumee, Hendrik Dideloff Bak. In the margin: In the presence of. Was signed: Willem Noseman and Albert Verstraten. Today, the 30th of November 1742 We, the undersigned, Willem Dumee, Under-Merchant and Secunde, and Cornelis Sonnevelt, bookkeeper and storekeeper at this office, by order and in the presence of the Merchant and Chief Abraham van Suchtelen, in the presence of the ship's captain Willem Noseman and the ship's bookkeeper Hieronimus Winder, both stationed on the Honourable Company's ship the Duyfje, opened and found properly and undamagedly sealed with five different private seals, both of Their Honours there and of the mentioned ship's officers at the top binding, the canvas sample bag of pepper sent hither by the administrators and commissioners of the island of Onrust, which according to the packing note found therein was to contain a gross weight of 74 lb — and which, according to the deduction of the bag which weighed at the scales here - - 3¼ leaves a net weight of 70¾ lb. Yet here at the scales, in pepper and dust together, only a net weight was found by us of . . . 66¾ lb from which in excess dust had to be sifted 1¾ lb and during its sifting and handling was further lost . . . - - - - - - - ¼ lb Subtract for that together 2 lb thus remain in deliverable pepper . . . - . . . . . . 64¼ lb yielding consequently in underweight and dust together the net weight of 8¼ percent scarce . . . 6 lb — This having been so seen by us and handled with all possible accuracy, we declare this our writing to contain the pure truth, wherefore we are also always prepared to substantiate the same under oath. Thus handled and seen in the office of Bassoura on the day as mentioned in the heading of this document. Below stood: For the re-weighing. 375 From Persia under date 29 June 1743 Herewith the affairs of Bassoura also being concluded, after which the Lord Commander proceeded to those of Boucher, which first brought into consideration the request of the Commissioner to be allowed to obtain authorization for the garbling of cinnamon, which request having been taken into consideration, the same was granted license thereto whenever such was highly necessary, however in such manner as squares with the recently received highly esteemed order of their Right Excellencies, namely when the same is moldy or mixed with thick and scentless wood, but not to have the coarse picked out from the fine cinnamon, as to our grievous regret was done by our brokers according to what occurred through their Right Excellencies by letter of 30 September 1742. Meanwhile, as was further communicated, it has been accepted that the restitution of the 90 tomans previously extorted from the broker Natta and the Commissioner's first servant Sjambe, who at the same time holds the office of interpreter, on account of a claim made against them, which was set down more circumstantially in our resolution of 16 January last, has taken place; and further attention was paid to the persistent request of the assistant there, Huybert van Poot, for his discharge from this directorship, whereupon it was deemed proper and resolved to defer that person's request until the new Commissioner shall depart thither, at which time one from among the clerks on hand will be sent thither for his replacement. And lastly, by the gentleman there was also rendered the finding of all the merchandise which from the below-mentioned vessel Het Duyfje 377 From Persia under date 29 June 1743 Duyfje have been discharged, and what was found regarding their condition, and upon which such resolution was taken as is made known with each entry to be taken care of below. Finding of All such merchandise as by order of the Honorable Worshipful Mr. Simon Clement, Merchant and Provisional Commander of the Persian Directorship and dependencies thereof, were unladen from the Honorable Company's ship Het Duyfje and consigned as well as delivered to the Junior Merchant and First Commissioner the Honorable Jacob van Schoonderwoert, together with the assistant and ad interim second ditto Huybert van Poot, consisting in quantity and quality as follows, namely: Packs From Persia under date 29 June 1743 torn ... request against cash fl. 20: 8:- the ... placed, the profiteurs thereof to be brought into cash by the Fiscal.
