540 Persia, 28 February 1747. the same humbly beseeches confirmation in that office and the rank of Merchant, promising loyalty and vigilance, discovered shortage of Horssen. subsequently made such changes as our adopted resolution demonstrates in more detail, and to which we in all respect request permission to refer: The aforementioned Canter comes to offer in all submission and respect to Your Right Honourables his petition, to the end that through Your Right Honourables' benign grace he may be benefited and confirmed from his provisional functions to the absolute rank of Merchant and the salary pertaining thereto, promising that he shall not be negligent in keeping watch in that office according to oath and duty. Persia the 20th of February 1747. Regarding the detention of this vessel, one refers to the resolution of the 10th of February. However, taking on the old copper works, the journey was undertaken, and thus this shipment proceeded. Yet, concerning the continuation of the voyage of that vessel, one refers, if it pleases Your High Noble Severe Grand Worships, to avoid prolixity, to the aforementioned adopted resolution of the 10th of February; while one will also leave the various matters reviewed therein to the gracious disposal and prudent judgment of Your High Noble Worships. And since Van Weesel, in a submitted petition, came to allege that in the Year 1748 at Colombo, on the 17247 lb of copper works transported from here at that time, there had been a shortfall of 11748 lb, and for that reason insisted that the said pants regarding the receipt sacks, as well as the large volumes beyond the weighing, might be received on board by count; this was granted to him, as being of no impropriety. Persia the 28th of February 1747. Butter and 3 leagers for adjacent reasons, item the crew along with some medicines and plaster cloth, half a barrel of pitch and half a ream of cardoos paper conceded. As consisting in no impropriety, according to our repeatedly cited resolution of the 16th of December, along with the receipt of 180 lb of butter and 3 leagers of vinegar, regarding which it was verified by 5 statements that on the voyage hither, 3 whole aams of sweet oil containing 300 cans had leaked out to 108 cans due to the bad condition of the coast; likewise that the said 3 leagers or 1080 cans of vinegar had been found to be foul-smelling, unusable, and thus unfit for distribution; and that they were in great need of this and other items in order to be provisioned for a year; as well as good months for the crew, together with, on account of the request likewise made in that regard, some medicines and plaster cloth, and finally, according to the resolution of the 10th of this month, half a barrel of pitch and half a ream of cardoos paper, all of which was granted. To conclude this, we are still obliged to present to Your High Noble Worships. From Persia the 28th of February 1747. Those of the bearer of this come over, among which is counted the one who serves for board; a person detained through illness. 4 copies of acts of converted persons; further, among the pay papers, the qualified muster roll and short summary of the personnel of this shore, with and alongside a duplicate of the bearer of this, which now, under God's gracious blessing, provides 62 souls, among which, however, is counted the first mate of the private vessel the Wilhelmina, named Ian Tas, whom we, upon his verbal request to obtain transport to Malabar, where he also belongs and is assigned, as a passenger, have granted such in accordance with the much respected orders; and which aforementioned number would have been increased by one with the boatswain's mate of that vessel, Jan Terrie of Amsterdam, were it not that one had to detain this person here due to severe illness, and we do not trust that this will be taken in the worst light by Your High Noble Worships. 553. Persia the 28th of February 1747. A letter to the gentlemen deacons accompanies this company. And further, under the favorable interpretation of Your High Noble Worships, we also let this be accompanied by our letter written to the Reverend Deacons at Batavia, together with a sealed bag containing some money distributed for the needy poor over there, under a completely respectful request for Your High Noble Worships' order for the redistributing thereof, as well as the sequestration monies likewise accompanying this, which have accrued from the insolvent estate of the deceased chief surgeon of the ship Oosterhoud, Ian Casper Gormans, and by judicial resolution here on the 5th of January last was approved to be remitted to the sequestrator of the Honorable Council of Justice of the Castle of Batavia, also in conformity with the highly Persia the 28th of February 1747. Jan bodily constitution made an urgent appeal, and for the restoration of his ailing condition he gladly wished to resign from this small directorship, after which the President frankly declared to the members that the said Mr. Schoonderwoerd, on account of his capacities and great experience, could not be spared for his part here, but was much more needed here than at Bassoura, the more so as we have already been favored by Their High Excellencies with the right of succession, and therefore requested on that ground that this request might be denied to His Honor; and although the other fellow members were very willing to acknowledge that the said Mr. Secunde, in order to recover his health—which he, like many others, had lost through a long presence in this directorship—badly needed this trip, nevertheless one could by no means reject the authority's Persia, under date 28 February 1747. From the authority's sentiment, but deemed it utterly necessary to embrace it, just as our Mr. Petitioner also let himself be satisfied with this resolution. Jan Persia, under date 28 February 1747. in the same to our utmost ability and obligated duty to urge them daily to clear those considerable debts, we must nevertheless in all conscience and truth declare with regard to those people that, through unfortunate intervals, money extortions and other exactions which they constantly and only too much, God knows, must undergo by fair means or foul, together with their increased family, they are indeed to be pitied and as yet unable to pay anything of note. Nonetheless we shall in the meantime leave no means on earth untried for the settlement of their debit in order to give some degree of satisfaction to the objective of their High Noble, Severe, and Most Honorable Lordships, and furthermore continually urge them thereto in accordance with our bounden duties.
