Item, the hamals and their deft thievery contributed not a little to the aforementioned shortage. On the 29th of April last, since most members were suffering from the hot fever, no further business could be conducted other than merely resolving that, as soon as the sloop from Boucheer has returned, the ministers will be provided from the Company's stock according to their requisition of the aforementioned date, so far as can be spared from the main factory; while it has furthermore been agreed to approve their request regarding the expenses incurred in the months of January, February, and March for ordinary expenses of f 842:14:— and extra expenses of f 161:5:—, making together f 1003:19:—, as well as the advance salaries drawn by the Junior Merchant M Mee and Assistant Alexander Diederiksz, because neither item was excessive, and at the same time to authorize the execution of the necessary repairs of the dilapidated structures, estimated at ms 900:—, provided that this must be carried out with the utmost frugality. Finally, after the Honorable Director presented an Isfahan letter dated 12 June last, upon reading its repulsive contents, the regret of the servants was noted, namely that their request previously made regarding the retention of 2 pieces of silver horse bridles and horses, as well as the pension granted to them by the Commissioners, had been disapproved, and the further emoluments, outside ordinary salary and board money, had been reduced to Ms 90:—, which together could amount to no more than Ms 2216:— in the space of a year; all of which, being a tedious tale, was accepted for communication along with the completed sale of 4 pieces of horses and their gear for ms 1400:—, as well as their promises regarding the forwarding of the aforementioned horse bridles and trade books, and the destruction of 16 lb of mite-eaten radix China. However, having observed further to our regret that, because our order was drafted too late by His Honor, the courier CWas, carrying our 5 bills of exchange to the amount of thoms 200:— for the payment of the goods purchased as gifts for His Majesty to the amount of Ms 13190:— and expenses incurred upon his departure, could not arrive before the 18th of May, and thus 37 days later than the servants had agreed upon a term of 3½ months with 2 Banians at the cited purchase; also that the said heathens had claimed a considerable interest of 15 per cent on this, which was later settled with great difficulty at 10 per cent; it was agreed, after mature consideration of what could be reconciled with equity, to regard this loss as a genuine excuse and to validate it along with the loss on 3 bills of exchange up to ms 390:— (provided that the same return here), as they claim they were in extreme distress for cash and could receive no more than ms 8200:— on the remaining 122 thoms, since the remaining thoms 40:— were not accepted, but were remitted back via a counter-bill on the Banian Gosjaal to be paid to us in 10 days after sight. Inasmuch as it was also noted that their debit, which had consisted of a sum of ms 20168:—, had been settled by taking up thoms 23 at 7 per cent payable in two months, as they had newly required cash, it was resolved to transmit to them again 125 thomans by bill of exchange as soon as possible, and at the same time to write to them that no more repairs may be made for the Company's account, and that they will have to bear for their own account the expenditure of Mt 300:— for clearing the earth that fell during the collapse of some apartments, just as it will also be strictly prohibited to make any payment of dues on the bathhouse for the account of the Dutch East India Company. From Persia, the 28th of February 1747. Our promise in that regard to comply with the orders. Circular letter dated the 3rd of August 1745 regarding the price increase of cloves to 100 heavy stuijvers per pound and several other annexes according to the register thereof, complete, and with which various subordinate employees have likewise been provided in due time with whatever pertained in any way to their stations; with promises on our part to Your Right Excellencies, and recommendations to those employees, that we shall steadily endeavor to watch over the prompt observance of these highly valued commands to the best of our ability, in order thereby to escape Your Right Excellencies' sensitive resentment in the subject case. However, Right Honorable, Valiant, and Highly Esteemed Sirs, in order at once to satisfy the formidable orders, legitimate complaint, and alongside that the stipulated penalty regarding the prolonged detention of the ships upon the dispatch of these messengers as quickly as possible, it is hoped that we may suffice with this our accompanying short letter, citing some points that we deemed necessary to discharge with Your Right Excellencies' pleasure and favorable interpretation; under the promise of respectfully furnishing Your Right Excellencies with a complete report of everything by the next opportunity. And proceeding with the sequel of this, to first present our heartfelt thanks to Your Right Excellencies, both for the aforementioned received writings and for the support of merchandise and several other necessities, with the respectful assurance that we shall not fail to observe proper management in all respects in that regard. Just as we also present to Your Right Excellencies in the most respectful manner how, in our meeting of the 28th of October last, we read the highly respected considerations of His Right Excellency, the Right Honorable, Valiant, and Highly Esteemed Lord Gustaaf Willem Baron van Imhoff, presented in the Council of India, graciously drafted on the matter of an honest livelihood for all the Honorable Company's servants, and therewith His Excellency's wholesome and salutary intention is praised, since everyone has thereby been granted the freedom to devise the means for an honest livelihood in their own sphere, provided nevertheless that the care required in the subject case was embraced and thus did not tend to the detriment of the Honorable Company or the public: such as the warehouse keeper being allowed to stipulate an over-weight and under-weight upon receipt and delivery, as well as all chiefs and further cashiers one-half per cent for the receipt and expenditure of monies, yet under the restriction that it must be demonstrated to Your Right Excellencies' full satisfaction upon what monies this half per cent is calculated; that Your Right Excellencies had also been pleased to benefit all governors, chiefs, and further cashiers with an equal half of the aforementioned amount for keeping the cash. Thus, after attentive reading and mature deliberation of all this, it has been approved, subject to the correction of Your Right Excellencies, to divide the cash, both at this station and the subordinate offices, in the following manner: one-fourth per cent for the chief, one-eighth per cent for the second, one-eighth per cent for the brokers or others who are qualified for the time being to keep the cash. While the second, Van Schoonderwoerd, was simultaneously ordered to report at the next meeting concerning the aforementioned privilege in an exposition to be prepared thereof. Meanwhile, at this session, the director, together with the recently elected provisional chief of Bassoura, Frans Canter, also represented to the rest of the council how meager the means of their livelihood were, and requested that this might be communicated to Your Right Excellencies in the earliest dispatch, which is hereby most submissively done. The director and the last-mentioned provisional chief respectfully request that, for their further sustenance, Your Right Excellencies may kindly grant them one per cent of all private merchandise brought in by the Honorable Company's ships as well as other vessels. Regarding the purchase and sale of goods for the stipulated two and five per cent, Your Right Excellencies are assured that the same shall be reported truthfully, and that actions in that regard will be conducted throughout the year in conformity with the order; whereof the subordinate employees have already been given the requisite notice by letter of the 2nd of November last, and were simultaneously notified not to sell the cloves for less than 100 heavy stuijvers per pound, and were provided with an extract of the calculation prepared thereof by the second, with the warning that in case of non-execution thereof, the deficit would be charged to their private account. Just as we shall briefly note to Your Right Excellencies regarding the demands, it has also been resolved by the aforementioned resolution to request both for this main station and the Fatherland 300,000 pounds.

From Persia, the 20th and 28th of February 1747. Together with 7 to 800 man of assafoetida and some copper works, these are being sent via the bearer of this, so that they may be disposed of. To remit 300,000 lb of red earth together with the copper works on hand, accompanied by 75,800 man of assafoetida toward Surat, and in which the remaining requisitions will also be complied with as closely as possible at the first opportunity; provided that our lords superiors in the beloved Fatherland will also be informed by further outgoing letters regarding the Radix Rhei sent from here for the Fatherland via the Cornelia in the year 1742, in such manner as has been given effect in the currently outgoing requisition for the Fatherland through the marginal reply. And we further respectfully inform Your High Excellencies that although we succeeded in fulfilling the pistachios, raisins, and dried plums requisitioned by Your High Excellencies, the requested dried fruits could not be fully supplied because there were absolutely no glazed pots to be obtained here, and they can seldom or never be acquired, and also because the bearer of this had been embarked with assafoetida and sulfur. Wherefore, with Your High Excellencies' kind indulgence, its dispatch has been deferred until the next opportunity. Petition submitted by the Director on the resolution taken on 16 December. By the aforementioned cited Honorable van Schoonderwoerd, pursuant to our recent resolution taken on the submitted decree of 28 October under date of 16 December, serving as a second petition thereon, and the points contained therein having been taken into regard: that although it was true that the 5 percent on the old copper works has been somewhat crossed out, nevertheless, because those scraps are often unrefined and through burning as well as repeated re-working entail a great loss, it was notwithstanding decided to let the same remain, along with and beside all other items, for reasons as the text dictates. Taking into account the presented representation, all the more because we also had the good fortune to perceive that His High Excellency in the aforementioned consideration had pleased to reflect upon the intrinsic difference and less favorable climates of each place, wherein we, Your High Excellencies' languishing servants, must continue to drift—indeed, so bad and afflicted with manifold corruptions as is believed, with Your favorable interpretation, not to exist in the whole of the Indies; and consequently we also concurred with His Honor's proposal made at that petition, regarding the submission to Your High Excellencies on account of his onerous dual office of Secunde and Warehouse Master, for greater support of emoluments. And which petition on behalf of the said gentleman is enclosed herewith, all still subject to the gracious indulgence of Your High Noblenesses and Great Worships, further contained in our resolutions of the mentioned 16 December, to which we refer to avoid prolixity. Trade is for the present still of a poor outlook on account of the troubles in the empire not yet ceasing, and through cruel treatments everyone begins to rebel. While alongside the last-mentioned writings of those servants, one also received from that prince a Royal Decree, as well as from his Molla Bashi, the supreme cleric, a letter, in both of which writings it was requested for a good doctor who was at the same time a surgeon; but as one must devise many means of satisfaction here, merely to be able to maintain a peaceful possession, the chief surgeon appointed to this office, Jan Goosman, having been heard thereon, was proposed whether he found himself in a state to be able to undertake the journey to the court, the same declared that he was not well able nor dared to undertake that expedition, and on that account requested to be excused therefrom. 541 Persia the 28th of February 1747.
