Captain Barton, from here to Coromandel, also giving to consider whether the aforementioned persons have become a subject of some greater reflection, now that peace in Europe was apparently also about to bring all kinds of such unusual navigators to the Indies [illegible] to anticipate them in their privileges, and as by a visible sign to make many weak minds perceive that the Lutherans, although fellow Christians, nevertheless differ very much from the doctrine, religion, and worship which was formerly, pursuant to the constant custom introduced everywhere in their jurisdictions by Their High Mightinesses the Lords States General of the free United Netherlands, who without doubt are the supreme rulers of these Indian districts, established by the so frequently approved Statutes of Batavia Tit. 2. Art. 1. Anno 1642, and thus now more than a century ago, and of which in the just-mentioned Article it is literally ordained by way of a perpetual fundamental law: that within the boundaries of the Kingdom of Jacatra no other worship or religion shall be practiced, much less taught or propagated, whether in private or in public, than the Christian Reformed worship, as it is taught in the public churches of the United Netherlands. This fundamental law prescribed to us, along with the intentions presupposed by Your Right Honorable and our minds, has made us resolve to check in their birth all the tolerances condemned at the National Synod held in Anno 1618 and 1619 at Dordrecht contrary thereto, according to our calling and duty owed to a weak and native congregation, entirely as well as piecemeal, or at least to enclose them by certain marks and stipulations of distinction, the more so as we all, according to the signing of the acts of the aforementioned synod, have moreover bound ourselves to tolerate no other doctrine, and to take care that the weak congregation entrusted to us, and principally the native sheep of the Lord's pasture, would not be driven away by other doctrines to new and strange opinions which formerly were never raised here in this country, even those who were here in the service of the Honorable Company from Lutheran countries had already so united themselves with our old worship that they themselves as Lutherans, and much more any native Christians, scarcely thought of any other than the Reformed Christian religion. But what a change has not arisen therein by granting the Lutheran church here the very same privileges as were formerly given to our church, since these opponents have not only immediately withdrawn themselves entirely from us and tried to bring over their Reformed wives and children to their fellowship, but furthermore are now already noticeably busy trying by all ways and means to cause a schism among the native Christians, as well as to entice many from heathenism, who otherwise freely came to us, for the augmentation and enlargement of their congregation, to which the interest of their ministers, who must be maintained by the congregation, will in time arouse more and more zeal; in which improper doings we shall now have to console ourselves under Your Right Honorable's despotic orders and reproaches. After this one may let follow that thundering in doctrine and lightening in conduct are expressions that are not found in the letter from the church council which we had the honor to write to Your Right Honorable on 20 October 1745, and we consequently cannot understand how Your Right Honorable came by them; but supposing they were indeed found therein, we remark that they are nothing other than permitted and customary so-called theological and biblical expressions, which, although not known to the common people, are nevertheless sufficiently known and used by theologians and others, as appears from that elaborate work of the learned Master Greenhill on the prophet Ezekiel, Part 1, page 168 and elsewhere. This little we have judged our office and duty required us to send to Your Right Honorable for our defense. For the rest, we beseech the All-Sufficient that He may take Your Right Honorable in His holy and mighty protection; may He shower Your Right Honorable's persons, respectable families, and weighty offices in these dark days with all essential blessing and prosperity; may He make Your Right Honorable's government fortunate and prosperous; may He grant that Your Right Honorable behold and enjoy the good of the land in length of days; may He give Your Right Honorable especially an ever greater share in the goods of His kingdom, righteousness, peace, and joy through the Holy Spirit; and finally crown Your Right Honorable with the crown of grace of eternal glory. Johannes Thaddaeus Cajetanus Ferdinand, who arrived here from Banda, has been called to that congregation. B. On the Island of Onrust. This island having as yet no permanent teacher, God's Word is proclaimed there now and then, as circumstances permit, by one or another minister who is free in the city, and the Holy Supper is administered every three months. Without permanent calling: Reverend Johannes Schelling, who arrived among us in the past year, is retained here for the acquisition of the Malay language, to which His Reverence applies untiring diligence, and has been relieved of the Dutch service in order to advance all the better. Johannes Bosler, who suffered aboard the ship Amstelveen, but now being on the mend, has already let his gifts be heard; there has also come over to us Sigbertus Abrahamsz. Bronsvelt, who after having let his gifts be heard here several times, has recently departed for Ceylon, whither he was destined; at Tugu (being a certain estate belonging to Gerardus Cornelis Bastiaansze, who came out for the Chamber of Rotterdam in the Portuguese language 1357 the gentleman Justinus Vink, former Drossaart of the Batavia surrounding districts, who built a church there at his own expense, which was consecrated by the Reverend Mr. Mohr on the 24th of July of the current year with Psalm 84:5), at the last visitation 163 Christians were found, all Portuguese, among whom were 38 members. On the Island of Ceylon and subordinate places: and in Colombo, there labor in the Lord's vineyard Reverend Johannes Philippus Wetzelius, who continually with much more zeal and edification attends to his ministry not only in the Seminary, but also in the church now and then as he pleases, and administers the Holy Supper every 3 months in the native congregations of Cotta, Kalutara, and Negombo; Henricus Saekens; Mattheus Wirmelskircher, preaching as yet continually only once a month, while proceeding with learning the Sinhalese language. According to the latest reports, there were in Colombo: Dutch members: 740. In the Leprosy house: 10. In the churches under the Colombo district, at the last visitation, there were found: baptized Christians: 59,955. Revered circular missives, dated 13 December 1741, 16 November 1742, 17 November 1744, and 28 October 1745, together with a separate one of 20 November of the last-mentioned year, accompanied by various appendices, Rendementen, billets, and price currents, which have all arrived in good order according to the registers that were attached to them, while in addition to that, both from there as well as from the Indian headquarters, several extracts have been favorably sent and received by us from your Right Honorable Worships' highly esteemed missives written to their High Excellencies the Governor-General and Council of India, dated 15 March, 13 October, 13 December 1741; 21 April, 28 August, and 26 November 1742; 24 January and 2 September 1743; 18 March, 5 September, and 17 November 1744; 29 March, 3 September, and 20 November 1745; as well as 10 September 1746; alongside 5 extract demands of returns for the years 1742, 1744, 1745, 1746, and 1747.
