Captain Barton, from here to Chormandel, also submitting for consideration whether the aforementioned persons have become worthy of somewhat more reflection, now that peace in Europe apparently stood to bring all kinds of such unusual navigators to the Indies as well, and that payment having followed, we shall await your elucidation. And since bottomry loans, even if nothing else should lie concealed beneath them, must be notoriously harmful to the Honorable Company, and therefore, upon request for such, must be averted and discouraged in every suitable manner, you have done very well to let your thoughts dwell upon some means whereby you consider that these bottomry loans could be avoided, contained in your aforementioned letter of 30 September 1742, but concerning which we shall likewise suspend our opinion until the considerations of the ministers thereabout have come in and been examined. Meanwhile, it is our pleasure to learn of the Right Honorable satisfaction regarding the increased profits and reduced burdens of the year 1740/41, but on the contrary we have noted with regret their dread displeasure over the small advances of the merchandise in that year, amounting to only 57 7/10 percent, whereas the two preceding years had yielded well over twice as much; we promise in this regard to strive constantly and to pursue the true interest of the Honorable Company, although we must testify with sorrow that trade in this country is sinking ever deeper into the quicksand, and to speak truly and without reservation, is in such a poor state that today one must assume the Honorable Company, by continuing the same here at this office, will at least be able to gain no further advantage, since the burdens are too great to be made good by a small turnover, whereas on the contrary, if it should please your Right Honorable to withdraw hands from the same and to retain only that of the spices, or pepper taken with it, the burdens could be reduced to f 20,000:—:— per year, and the Honorable Company would thus always proceed without being subject to risk, difficulty, money interest, etc., just as on average over the last 16 years the Honorable Company has profited an amount of f 72,846:7:— per year according to the yields on that aromatic fruit here at the office, so that we now take the honor to place more circumstantially before the eyes of their High Nobilities in a separate consideration regarding free shipping and trade, to which we take the liberty to refer, as the same without other your Right Honorable pernaas over the land route of Aleppo is respectfully to be offered. In the meantime, it appears not at all disagreeable that the Gamron books in 1740/41 were closed with a gross advance of f 279,654:9:12, and thus f 36,840:16:12 more than the preceding year, as well as that in contrast the burdens of that office amounted to f 132,536:12:—, and the same consequently totaled an amount of f 27,659:2:6 less than in the previous year, although on all merchandise on average no more was obtained than an advance of 57 3/20 percent, which made a considerable difference to the disadvantage compared with the years 1738/39 and 1739/40, since the same in the first-mentioned year had yielded 132 2/5 percent, and in the last-mentioned year still 118 8/40 percent, which according to your thoughts was to be attributed to the lower selling price of the goods, and specifically of the linens, since the ministers had seen fit to reduce the same all at once so extraordinarily that they were disposed of at only 9 3/10 percent, but for which you rightly made the ministers compensate in their private capacity for the greater yielded advances according to the yield dated 17 May 1740, who had taken the resolution for that extraordinary reduction. What reason the then ministers had to petition for so many woolens, and among them some English ones, we can discover as little as their request to confront the arrogant Persian with sword in hand, since with the one as little advantage for the Honorable Company can be pursued as with the other, so that it has all the more become apparent that the latter will always be time enough when one is attacked, and outside of that one will not be able, and the trade in the former will never succeed at the Gamron office alone, but indeed in Kirman and Isfahan, which latter place, however, always drags along too many burdens, and for which reason we dare not advise ever to re-establish there, but indeed, in better times, Kirman. find that the same is well situated, and where one can also keep house cheaply, and consequently the expenses could be maintained with a sum of ƒ5:—:— to 6000:—: per year, which the Honorable Company could see recouped from the turnover of spices alone, regardless of the profitable returns falling due there, which alone would be able to make good the expenses above that; and therefore we felt compelled immediately to request their High Excellencies to be permitted generally to return the wool manufactures brought by the Wiltrijk, which request was permitted us in the past year, and on which ground we dispatched the same, save for a few, on the ship 't Huijs ten Donk under the ultimate date of March of this year to Coromandel, in the hope that there a profitable [illegible] as the same had yielded at Gamron only 30 1/8 and at Bassoura 10¾ per cent, and notwithstanding that, as well as that there had been very little vent in them, the ministers there had requested in their demand 60 pieces of heavy Leiden cloth, 50 pieces of fine English ditto, and 200 pieces of common Leiden ditto; from which the ministers' little attentiveness and rashness, for which they also deserved a reproach from Your Honors with good reason, can be gathered just as clearly as from their unreasonable request to the end that they, in the case of enduring far too many torments, might be placed in a position to resist the arrogant Persian with the sword, as Your Honors cite that at length in the repeatedly mentioned letter of 30 September 1742. Nor are we entirely alone in Your Honors' presumption concerning that reckless request, namely that the same might well have been made to give Your Honors, if possible, an impression that the treatments of the regents were becoming entirely intolerable to them, and that they found themselves compelled and forced to give out substantial gifts to the same time and again; for besides the particular reasons which Your Honors cite in this case, we have also had to determine repeatedly, and have also made known, that both here and at other offices the soliciting of gifts on account of the vexations of the regents and other chiefs or commanders in that country were, as they say, the doll with which the ministers played in order to embezzle a good sum of money from the Honorable Company; wherewith we would have wished to help the Ceylon coffee beans, but that seems hitherto just as fruitless here as at the office of Bassora and Boucheer, where likewise none of it is sold, and there will also never be any vent in it unless there is an extraordinary dearness of the Mocha beans, at which time the merchants, for the sake of cheapness, are still willing to take it in order to mix the same with each other, but it seldom happens that the Mocha beans are sold for more than twelve stuivers the pound, and therefore an occasion for the turnover of the Ceylon beans will also seldom present itself; nevertheless, we shall not fail to apply all mercantile means constantly to let the same slip from our hands as much as possible, even if it were at six stuivers per pound. The constitution of the present High Indian Government having been taken into account, we have, in consideration of the faithful and prolonged services performed in many capacities with all zeal for the Company, seen fit to grant in an honorable manner the earnest and equitable request of the former Governor-General Theedens, and consequently permitted his Honor to reside at Batavia as former Governor-General with all the honor and wholehearted leisure; provided that he shall enjoy all the honor and douceur that former Governors-General have previously enjoyed, and lately Mr. Swaardekroon enjoyed, or else to come over here in the same capacity according to his convenience. According to obligation and duty, we take the honor to congratulate wholeheartedly his Honor, the Highly Honorable, Rigorous, Most Respectable Lord Johannes Theedens, with the honor and stay at Batavia as former Governor-General, with the heartfelt wish that it may please the Almighty to preserve his High Honor's precious person in perfect health for a long series of years to come, and to let him enjoy the fruits of his High Honor's previous care and labor. Furthermore, we have seen fit to confirm your provisional appointment of the Ordinary Councillor Pieter Rochus Pasques de Chavonnes to First Councillor and co-Director-General, and consequently to appoint his Honor thereto absolutely as of now; and in his place to advance the Extraordinary Councillor Mr. Jacob Lakeman to Ordinary Councillor. We may also take the honor to congratulate most humbly the Honorable, Most Respectable Lord Galenus Mersen on his Honor's promotion to the eminent character of Extraordinary Councillor of the Netherlands Indies, and to wish him everything desirable, so that he may hold that highly respected dignity in such a manner that it may redound to his own honor and the applause of the Honorable Company. To fill whose place, the Coromandel Governor Galenus Mersen is again appointed Extraordinary Councillor, who shall continue in that governorship until our further orders. We also cannot refrain from congratulating Mr. Cornelis Graaffland Cornelisz on His Honour's election as Secretary of the City of Amsterdam, and Mr. Isaac Sweers on his appointment as Assistant Advocate of the Honourable Company, hereby wishing Their Honours the blessing of the Almighty from the bottom of our hearts. Honourable, Valiant, etc. In our letters of 17 November 1744 and 29 March of this year, which have already been dispatched with several ships, we laid down our orders and preliminary reply regarding matters that required haste and had come before us from the letters and papers received from the Indies during the past year. And firstly, with regard to Amboina: Although the quantity of cloves that the natives delivered to the scales, according to the writing of the ministers of 26 June 1743, amounted to 141885 lb, exceeding the calculated estimate previously made thereof, yet the amount that we received into our hands—because we had meanwhile become destitute of that spice crop—could produce no more advantageous result for the Company than to have them sold publicly, as we have already given Your Honours communication thereof at the head of our demand of returns from the Indies for the year 1746. And since the quantity that we could bring into the sale was small and far below the annual consumption, nothing else could follow but that the price had to run noticeably higher than the previously fixed price of 75 stuivers bank money per pound, just as the same has risen and been sold by us from 86 to 90 stuivers bank money per pound. Because of this, a great difference in price has now arisen between this country and the Indies, which might occasionally give cause—in case the price in the Indies continued to remain at four guilders heavy money—for the same to be purchased by European nations in the Indies, brought over hither, and traded with great profit. Wherefore, in order to prevent the disadvantage which the Company would come to suffer thereby, both in the Indies and here in this country, we have thought fit to order Your Honours to raise the sales price of cloves everywhere throughout the whole of the Indies, and to set it at 90 heavy stuivers per pound provisionally and until our further orders, which, as it now appears, will at least have to be maintained at no lower price for a considerable time to come, etc. By the esteemed circular letter of Their High Mightinesses dated 3 August 1745, dispatched hither, order having been given to raise the cloves to 100 heavy stuivers per pound, such was de facto done and executed by us; yet we must testify with regret that because of this, as well as the pennilessness of the natives, that crop currently sells very poorly. Macassar: That one ought to be attentive at all the trading offices to make good use of the Company's ships, and above all not to detain them without the utmost necessity, is something that the interest of the Company requires. Likewise, this adjoining order shall henceforth be strictly observed by us. Captain Barton, from here to Coromandel, also suggesting for consideration whether the aforementioned persons have become subject to any further reflection, now that peace in Europe was apparently also about to bring all sorts of such unusual navigators to the Indies, and on which account it is requested that they may remain relieved of all accountability to the Company in that regard, under sincere promise that, according to honor, oath, and duty, regarding a speedy dispatch of the same, the true interest of the Company will henceforth be attended to as much as concerning all other matters, both of trade and economy, etc. That the Company requires this so urgently that no delay should ever take place in it; yet one sees that such happens, and recently occurred in this Government for the sake of a single person, which has also given Your Honor well-founded reasons to establish that such a person in future, beyond other correction, shall also have to compensate for the damage of the delay, and thereunder, without any form of trial, the wages and further maintenance of the officers and crew sailing upon it. That Your Honor, besides the established order of the ministers concerning the estate and the authority granted to the Orphan Chamber to conduct an investigation into the estates whereof the executors of testamentary dispositions show no proof that they have been remitted, have also ordered that, both at the main settlement and elsewhere at the subordinate offices, in addition to the wills that must be registered with the general records of the Orphan Chamber, an authentic copy of all inventories must also be handed over and deposited at the said chamber, has appeared to us to be utterly reasonable and just, not only because thereby not the least hindrance is caused to the free disposition to appoint private executors, but also because the heirs thereby could always obtain some further light and come upon the track to investigate what has become of the estates. That all dust and rubbish of spices must be sent sealed to the main settlement is an order so old and well known that it seems almost incomprehensible how it could be contravened, and therefore the ministers would indeed have deserved to compensate the Company for the quantity burned by them, instead of a serious reproach, etc. Awaiting the considerations of the ministers regarding some means proposed by Your Honor in order, if possible, to avoid those continuous ship loans, we meanwhile learn from the letters of the ministers written to our assembly and dated 31 October 1742 that, the ship Ridderskerk having again been extorted from them for the transport of two Sindhi commissioners to Diwel, the same on its return voyage was stranded by an extraordinarily heavy hurricane, without being able to salvage anything at all of the cargo due to the insolence and boorishness of the natives, and of 55 mariners no more than 17 Europeans besides 9 Moors. We must here repeat our letter of 5 September 1744 on this matter, namely that it has not come to our notice from the letters of the ministers whether and how much the Persians assessed for those seafarers, as well as whether they have paid 1000 thomans for that year from the old court debt amounting to 17000 thomans, as they had promised according to the letter of the ministers of 12 January 1740. Meanwhile, it is utterly just and reasonable that the damage which the Company has suffered thereby. The order enacted by Their High Nobilities to let the ships come to anchor behind the island of Hormuz, and to send their boat or message from there to advise of their arrival, appears to us as the best precaution one can take, in order, when there was danger of a ship loan, to evade the same, sending those ships either onward to Basra or back to Surat. However, we promise Your Right Honorable Nobilities henceforth not to proceed to any loan thereof unless under the utmost compulsion, so that such an accident may not again befall the Honorable Company as happened through the loss of the ship Ridderskerk. A considerable capital of ƒ3730871:3:—. because among them there will still be good balances, which has also caused you to resolve to order the ministers to submit to you at the first opportunity which are to be regarded as good and which as bad balances, we recommend to the ministers to apply all diligence in order that the balances be collected as much as possible, as well as to reduce the expenses through a most necessary economy; and since the office at Ispahan during that book year had no profit whatsoever, but rather a notable sum of expenses, and no good was any longer to be hoped or expected from it for the Company, together with the silk, which in the book year 1740 and 1741 amounted to a sum of ƒ186733:1:4. Regarding the silk trade, we have had the honor to respectfully converse with your Honors in the margin of your demand of returns for the year 1744 long beforehand, demonstrating therein that there was virtually not the slightest prospect anymore of ever coming to a contract, considering the king on the one hand would not wish to deliver that spun yarn to Gamron, and on the other hand his interest could not be served thereby, because silk in Spahan and here at present is a capital amount more expensive than what the Honorable Company had contracted for it previously, as the pound at present costs from ƒ6:18:— to ƒ10:—:—, and no Persian, whether great or small, will ever do anything for the sake of a European with the postponement of his own interest; besides and except that Gamron is also truly the absolute worst place in the entire Persian realm to negotiate silk for Europe, considering the great expenses to which that spun yarn is subject through the passing of nearly 40 Rhadaars, or weighmasters, item tolls, as otherwise, so that we should no longer detain your Honors with a vain hope in that regard, as we cannot conceive the Honorable Company will find its account by this route. That spun yarn, as far as is known to us, being mainly contracted and bought up in the province of Ghilan by timely advances of 6 and more months to poor people who have 100, 200, and more or fewer worms, in small parcels commonly by Muscovite, English, and Armenian merchants, the maon of 12 lbs of the 1st sort for ƒ48:—:—, 2nd sort ƒ36:—:—, 3rd sort ƒ30:—:—, but the same then still being wet, dries in a good third before it arrives in Europe, and thus only 12 to 9 lbs remain, according to which the pound of the 1st sort would come to stand at ƒ5:7/9, 2nd ditto at ƒ4:—:—, and 3rd at ƒ3:4:—, so that we do not know how those people can make a profit on it in Europe, unless those assortments were better than those that have been sent from here to the fatherland.

We further note that, on account of the equipage of the past year, since our aforementioned letter, there have put out to sea, etc. As well as on account of the provisional equipage specified in our previous letter, the undermentioned four ships, etc., from the Chamber of Amsterdam to Persia, Wiltrijk, 14 November 1745, etc. Because we find that many difficulties and confusions arise in the matter of holding the judicium praeferentiae et concurrentiae in the Indies, and we consider that the same should once be established on a firm and equal footing, such that in case of the summoning of creditors from the Fatherland to the Indies by a judge here in this country, in all likelihood no difficulty will be raised about it, but the same will be immediately granted, we have therefore thought fit that in holding the judicium praeferentiae et concurrentiae of insolvent estates of the Company's servants in the Indies, so far as the movable property is concerned, the following distinction shall henceforth be observed: Firstly, that whenever such insolvency occurs in the estates of persons born in the Indies and accepted into the Company's service there, the said judicium shall then have to be held in the Indies. Secondly, that the same judicium shall also be held in the Indies in the insolvent estates of widows of the Company's servants, if they have resided in the Indies for a considerable time after their husband's death and with the intention of establishing their fixum domicilium there, as they are then to be considered nothing other than free burghers; but, Thirdly, that whenever the insolvent estates belong to persons who died while actually in the service of the Company, whether they had a so-called fixum domicilium in the Indies or died during navigation or otherwise, as well as of their widows who have not voluntarily continued their domicilium there for a year and a day after their husband's death, the aforesaid judicium shall have to be held in the place from where those persons sailed out. One will not fail to pay heed to this order and comply with it. That your Right Honourable Lordships, in accordance with your revered order, have received no reports from here up to the present day is to our regret, and is to be imputed to no one else than the commander Abraham vande Welle, whom people have spoken to sufficiently about this every day, so that it is recorded in abundance in the resolutions of this trading post, but without effect. For which reason not only, but also because of his continuous debauchery, wilful detention of the ships, negligence, and setting aside of all obligatory matters, whereby not only everything began to fall into extreme confusion, but also to become of a dangerous appearance, as well as serving uncommonly to the disadvantage of the Honourable Company, the full Council on 1 May last, after first waiting to the uttermost, found itself necessitated to take in hand means for redress, prevention of the Honourable Company's disadvantage, and security of its effects here in this country. A sum of ƒ37595:3:4 has nevertheless been expended, which has not happened during this century, as the books since that time have closed with a loss no more than twice, namely in the financial year 1704/5 with ƒ7135:2:15, and in the financial year 1730/1 with a small sum of ƒ658:18:8, while in the meantime we can assure Your Right Honourables that it will not fail on our part to make Persia flourish again as in days of old, and aside from those two financial years always with a surplus of profit, since we aim to achieve nothing other than what has for a long time remained behind to our glory, that we have looked after the interest of our respected lords and masters with all candour and zeal, during which there have already been many years of four, five, six, and seven tons of gold. And as we have also learned, among other things, that it had pleased Their Right Excellencies to permit the former Governor-General Johannes Thedens to remain at Batavia with full honors as former Governor-General, as well as to promote to Extraordinary Councilors of India the Honorable Galenus Mersen, Governor of Coromandel, and Jan Herman Theling, former Governor of Java's Northeast Coast, we cannot fail to express our heartfelt congratulations and joy thereat, and to wish Their Excellencies collectively and each individually God's gracious rich blessings, health, and prosperity. Proceeding therewith to the discussion of what concerns ships and yachts, we find ourselves obliged to note that from the officers of the ship 't Huijs ten Donk, three days after its actual dispatch, namely on 3 April, when it was still seen anchored on the outer roads due to adverse wind, a letter was received regarding the loss during the night before, through heavy weather, of two of their heavy anchors, with a request to accommodate them in place thereof with 1 to 2 other anchors as well as ropes, although they well knew that neither was available here. Wherefore they were written back on the same day, along with the dispatch of a kedge or chaloup anchor, that the request of the officers of 't Huijs ten Donk for 1 to 2 heavy anchors was turned down, 1396 and that they should simply continue their voyage in God's name, taking over the said anchor if it could be of any service, or otherwise sending it back, as it was judged that with the 3 remaining anchors and ample ropes they could well make the voyage, and that recovering the lost ones—before one had divers at hand to bring them up again from the depth of 16 to 18 fathoms—would take too much time, besides the uncertainty of whether they would ever be found. Whereupon that vessel, after having first returned the mentioned kedge anchor, made headway on its voyage and disappeared from sight the next day. Why the yacht De Lijdzaamheid departed for Bassora and not for Batavia. Bassora up to ƒ72450:—:—. and old copper works from Boucheer up to ƒ17858:—:—, but also that we were obliged to let that vessel depart on the following 20th of August to repair its defects, as well as the bearer of this, the yacht De Lijdzaamheid, which arrived here from Batavia on the 25th of June prior. Whose employment to Bassora having also been communicated to Your High Nobilities per the Nieuwalcheren, we shall in pursuance thereof merely mention here its return to these roads on the 25th of April last without cargo, at which time we indeed, according to Your High Nobilities' special orders, would have proceeded to dispatch that vessel quickly towards Batavia, but as that promised description was not fulfilled and not even a single letter begun, and on the contrary an urgent request was made de novo by the Bassora ministers for all our remaining white linens and as much sugar as could be spared, so that at the session of the 1st of May of this year it was decided, as being most advantageous for the Honorable Company, to satisfy that demand as far as possible since those cloths lay here entirely unsaleable and non-interest-bearing; and with which it obtained clearance thither once again on the 7th following, valued according to invoice at ƒ4046:4:8, but could not depart from these roads. Captain Barton, from here to Choromandel, also suggesting for consideration whether the aforementioned persons have become a matter of some greater reflection, now that peace in Europe apparently stood to bring all kinds of such unusual navigators to the Indies as well. The appointed sailing date of that vessel to Batavia fixed for the 10th of October, could not depart before the 12th of that month, as misfortune had also struck in losing one of its heavy anchors and ropes, which were nevertheless easily recovered from shallow water with the help of two divers, in full hope and expectation that Your High Nobilities will be pleased to note that by that disposition nothing else was aimed at than the true interest of the Honorable Company and a settlement of the accounts so greatly in arrears; that vessel having returned here again on the 29th of the past month of September in good condition and therefore, the day after, its sailing date was also fixed for today, and due to a lack of provisions, victualed for three months upon the written request of the commander Wijlander; and furthermore decided to let the cargo brought therewith from Boucheer remain on board, consisting of 45161 lb of old copper works and 4839 lb of copper in cakes, together with 2000 pieces of Surat rupees and 2463 39/6 reals of Nadir's coinage, which the residents had improperly charged to this office, valued according to invoice at ƒ42125:8:8, in order to address the said copper to Cormandel and the cash to Batavia; as well as to ship from here in addition all the funds that can be spared, with the sloop De Valk for some sulfur and empty carboys, provided however that its entire cargo does not exceed at most 70 to 80 thousand guilders, as that amount was deemed sufficient for that vessel. However, since some have now occurred there, to validate, there being furthermore on the cargo delivered to Basfora by the said keel nothing found amiss or questionable that is worthy of Your High Noblenesses' attention: Inasmuch as on the cargo delivered to Basfora by the bearer of this document on his first voyage thither, no excessive shortages were discovered either, but those that occurred thereon, consisting of 2 percent on the pepper and 1/25 percent on the cloves, were written off by the residents to the account of Profit and Loss; yet on his latest voyage there were discovered in various packages of linens a shortage of 38 pieces Cham Channijk, 2 pieces coarse Cassa, 2 pieces ditto fine, and 19 pieces mallemollen de miana, the debiting has taken place as appears hereby. Captain Barton, from here to Chormandel also raising the consideration whether the aforesaid persons have become of some greater reflection, now that the peace in Europe apparently also stood to bring all kinds of such unusual navigators to the Indies, thus have the said residents charged the purchase amount thereof, to the sum of ƒ279:12:8, back to this office, and furthermore referred the management thereof to us, because from 4 unpack slips it appeared that out of each of those four packages 2 pieces had been delivered here to the broker as samples, and yet had been sent as complete, whereon mature deliberations were held at the session of the ultimate of September last, and thus it was decided to debit the account of the then commissioner of the warehouses, Frans van Lom, to whom alone the mistake regarding those 8 pieces is to be imputed, with a purchase amount of ƒ89:14. The occurred shortages amounted to 1425 lb. or 3 percent on 47522 lb., and of the first to 1144 lb. or 6 percent on 18923 lb. according to the finding sent over thereof, without resident Bijleveld making any mention of a debit, either in his letter of 15 September or in the expense account, which nevertheless seemed to us should have been done; yet because we cannot rightly know whether that is a simple omission or neglected with the intention that we should dispose of it here, it was deemed proper only to make the same respectfully known to Your High Noblenesses. 1413 That regarding the silk trade, through careful investigation, the following report has been obtained, namely: That the description of the silk trade principally falling in the provinces of Ghiloen and Chiriwoen, is commonly contracted and bought up there through advance disbursements of six and more months to poor people who have 100, 200, and more or less worms, in small parcels by Muscovite merchants, Englishmen residing in Ghiloen, and Armenian merchants, the maon of 12 lb. first sort for ƒ 48:—:—, second sort ƒ 36:—:—, and third sort ƒ 30:—:—, but that, being still wet before it comes across the Volga into Europe, it dries in by almost one third, and thus only 8½ to 9 lb. is retained. Captain Barton, from here to Chormandel, also submitting for consideration whether the aforesaid persons have become of some greater reflection, now that peace in Europe apparently was also to bring all sorts of such unusual navigators to the Indies, according to which the pound of the first sort would come to stand at ƒ 5:7:—, the second ditto at ƒ 4:—:—, and the third ditto at ƒ 3:7:—, on which account we still cannot fathom how those people can make a profit on it in Europe, unless those assortments were better than those sent from here to the Fatherland, where the highest sample is only valued at ƒ 5:8:—, or that they could contract it for even less, or saw more profit, or more properly less loss, on it than on other returns, of which we here cannot judge with good foundation: —. And just as little can we, on account of the great distance, inform Your High Nobilities in how great a quantity that thread is produced in Persia, and how much is left over 1414 left over from what is employed here in the country for all kinds of gold and silver, as well as plain silk fabrics, and nagij and embroidery silk, to be transported out of the realm, but certainly that what goes out of this Gulf is very slight and not worth mentioning, and will possibly not amount to one thousand pounds in a year: — As also that the price of that yarn usually comes to stand at Spahan at ƒ 6:— 1/8, and 10, and here, when in an isolated case it is brought for the daily use of the native, at 10, 12, and 14 guilders the pound; so that we cannot calculate that the Honorable Company would pursue any advantage through purchase, nor by means of a contract with the king, since the monarch cannot be moved. Captain Barton, from here to Chormandel, also submitting for consideration whether the aforesaid persons have become of some greater reflection, now that peace in Europe apparently was also to bring all sorts of such unusual navigators to the Indies, our considerations in that regard, would be moved to deliver the same in Gamron, but which notoriously would have to happen in Spahan, which entails too great and detrimental a consequence, both through the considerable expenses which one is obliged to incur there, and the risk of extortions, advance disbursements, and spoliation of both money and goods, and he also would not be able to find his interest in delivering the same for so much less to the Honorable Company than it is presently negotiated there by the merchants; therefore we think that, with all due respect, it will be better to abandon it entirely rather than make more expenditures on that account, for no Persian, whether great or small, will ever do anything for the sake of a European to the prejudice of his own interest: — 1415 Kirman Wool. Regarding the Kirman wool, we have had the honor to advise Your High Nobilities in our previous letter of 22 December last in what manner we settled the arrears of the deceased Armenian factor Auwannees amounting to ƒ 4032:—:—, and safeguarded the Honorable Company from loss, to which respectfully referring, we shall state regarding the collection of that fleece: — That we, partly through the total ruin of Kirman, and partly because one has no reliable person at hand for its collection, principally one who would be inclined to deliver that clipping without advance disbursements, as it is understood Your High Nobilities would gladly wish to see according to their honored missive dated 16 December 1746, therefore also have little hope of succeeding in that; nevertheless we shall exert our utmost effort to find such a person, even if one were to give the same a namoedie or 6 stuivers more profit per maon of 6 lb. than was previously granted to Auwannees for the risk; but should it please Your High Nobilities rather to grant us permission to re-establish that trading post in a peaceful time by sending a single European thither, we do not doubt that the Honorable Company would defray the charges arising there up to 5 to 6 thousand guilders yearly.
