1142. at this head office of Batavia, as the same has turned out upon the closing of the trade books on the last day of August in the year 1748, namely: The general expenses in the last past 12 months, calculated from the 1st of September 1747 to the last day of August in the year 1748, amount to a considerable sum of ƒ3730698:7:12, which amount has been written off to the debit of the following accounts, as: Brief demonstration of the state of the Honorable Company had; and thus mostly throughout the entire night made such a noise, as if the ship were already run over or lost; that the aforementioned steward at the roadstead of Mocha, on the 24th of May of this year, had used coarse abusive words and threats against the officers, and principally against him, the deponent; such as, among others, that he would wash his hands in his, the deponent's, blood, and called the officers motherfuckers and openly declared them to be spice thieves; furthermore, that he had gone between decks and shortly thereafter had come running up with a naked knife to strike down him, the deponent, or else another; but owing to his drunkenness, he fell down near the stairs, and there slashed and stabbed; that no one could approach him without running into danger, but they threw a grease board onto his body, and thus wrested the knife from him, locked him in irons, yet upon promise of improvement, with an admonition, without punishment, he was released again by the captain of the ship on the 21st thereafter; that the aforementioned steward had related to the second mate of the above-mentioned vessel, Iacob Schwarth, that he did not dare return to his country, because he had struck someone down, as the mentioned mate had related to him, the deponent. That the first lieutenant had tried to appease the said steward, but this being in vain, had said to him that if he would not go away quietly, he would then have him locked in irons; and that the steward, subsequently coming aft and seeing that the officers had cutlasses with them, had said to the first lieutenant: Just strike if it comes to that, I also still have an old cutlass in my chest. would address the captain of the ship to obtain redress of honour from the Honorable Tempesel, because the same, as he the confessant understood from the supercargo, had had them locked up in the lodge by the Moorish governor in Mocha.
