From Mocha, 19 December 1748 brought, and also because the second supercargo, to his grievous regret, clearly saw that all likelihood of being able to comply with the ever revered orders of Your High Noble Excellencies was lost. The excessive market for the said crop later declined somewhat, when some hasty merchants had spent most of their cash, as Your High Noble Excellencies will be able to see, if you please, by our resolution of 20 June last, how it was thereby resolved that the second supercargo should shortly set out on a journey to Betelfacque again in order to try once more whether it might be possible to secure a good quantity of coffee beans and to keep the Honorable Company free of loss from having to take an empty ship back. But this nevertheless did not cause enough of a reduction in prices that one could enter the market for the Honorable Company, although the roads were cleared with force from day to day by the King's militia, which caused a large crowd of coffee planters to come down from the upper lands with their wares, giving us hope of finally succeeding after all, which might indeed have succeeded, had not, amidst all these fatalities, From Mocha, 19 December 1748 fatalities, the English ship the Essex also appeared in this roadstead to take away a full cargo of coffee, whereby the prices, which had already fallen to 11½ stivers per lb, were raised again to 12½ to 13 stivers. It turned out contrary to all our expectations that the skipper of the aforementioned private vessel the Johanna Elizabeth, Marten Wouter Tempezeel, would finally come to request to transfer his cargo of coffee to the Honorable Company out of fear of the English evil designs, as Your High Noble Excellencies will be able to observe, if you please, from his submitted petition along with the decision made upon it in our ship's council dated 14 June last, to which we respectfully refer hereby to avoid a detailed account, and thus merely cite what goods have been loaded into this vessel according to the enclosed invoice, namely: 489500 lb or 1675 whole and 400 half bales of good, dry, and well-sifted Betelfacque coffee beans, received and accepted by the first undersigned, all in good condition. The cost thereof amounts in total to ƒ275343:15:-, making 11¼ stivers per lb with all charges, except the commission money, which we must defer with all respect to the favorable pleasure of Your High Noble Excellencies because it exceeds the limit. However, we can assure Your High Noble Excellencies with sincerity that the Honorable Company is the only one that has transported any coffee from Mocha this year for such a price, for on Betelfacque these beans were purchased, prices calculated on average, for not less than roughly 13 stivers, and the English, a few days after their arrival in Mocha, as soon as they had learned of the excessive market, had an offer made to Tempezeel (who had surrendered his coffee to the Honorable Company just prior) to transship that crop into their vessel at 12½ stivers per lb in cash on delivery, upon which offer Tempezeel looked for means to overturn the sale already made, if possible. But, not being able to succeed therein according to his wishes, he became rather unfriendly, principally towards the second supercargo. From Mocha, 19 December 1748 Coffee beans in husks for the propagation thereof we have purchased according to the much-esteemed orders of Your High Noble Excellencies, namely: 4 bales, each of 260 pounds net, being of the latest crop, amounting with all charges to ƒ415:17:8. Of medicinal gums, no more good assortments are to be obtained this year than: 1010 lb Aloe Socotra 394 lb Myrrh 402 lb Olibanum, and 11 lb Balsam of Mecca, in 8 sealed little bottles, costing together ƒ777:15:-. We have also, in dutiful obedience to the ever-venerable orders of Your High Noble Excellencies, contained in an extract of a circular letter, among other papers given to the undersigned for information, purchased at Mocha for the account of the Honorable Company six pairs of donkeys, among them 3 female donkeys, amounting together with the forage for the voyage to ƒ295:17:8. Thus far we have now progressed to that which, beyond what has already been dealt with, was also performed by the supercargoes at Mocha and accomplished as far as possible according to the orders and intentions of Your High Noble Excellencies, consisting firstly of the collecting of the debts, the duty-free export of 600 bales of coffee beans, what expenses were incurred at Mocha for ship and crew, etc., what ships and vessels were there, and lastly a brief report concerning the present trade and conditions at Jedda and

From Mocha, 19 December 1748 Regarding the first matter, or the debts outstanding to the Honorable Company in Mocha, nothing else has been received thereof except 247 Spanish matten and 60 cabiers, which we deducted from its tolls upon the departure of the grab De Hoop on 2 April 1748. And had misfortune not willed that the King happened to pass away precisely in our time, we certainly would have received a much larger part of that money, for the Governor in all likelihood would not have broken his promises then, nor forced us, as he has now done, to pay the toll in full without being permitted to retain anything thereof as a deduction, notwithstanding that so many earnest protests and representations were made against this concerning Your Right Excellencies' legitimate displeasure if he, the Governor, should attempt to postpone the repayment. But all this was of no avail, as the Governor openly declared to us that he was neither willing nor able to do so, saying that the Honorable Company, through his true affection for it above all other nations in these troubled times—both on account of the death of the Imam and the wars that followed, as well as heavy financial contributions—ought to consider itself very fortunate that the debt, instead of being reduced, was not increased by a considerable number of Spanish matten, since he, the Governor, had this year been obliged to withhold 5,000 Spanish reals from the English and expressly 10,000 from the French on account of the Betelfacque business. As regards the second matter, or the Honorable Company's prerogative to export 600 bales of coffee beans toll-free, we did indeed enjoy this right, but whatever effort was made, the Governor of Mocha would not consent to it, under the pretext that this was a new innovation for which he could not account to the Imam, because the coffee had been traded at Betelfacque for the account of the French and merely transshipped at Mocha into the Honorable Company's vessel. And although it was very clearly demonstrated to him From Mocha, 19 December 1748 that the Johanna Elizabeth was a Dutch and not a French ship, which stood under the authority of the Honorable Company just as we did, this was of no avail, for the Governor referred to a letter written to him by the General of Pondicherry. But as this seemed a strange matter to us and we found no mention of it in the Honorable Company's papers, the Second Supercargo had an audience with the Governor about it several times.

A Croes at Jedda is half a Mocha piastre de perra, and a Cruijs has 40 Duanijs. A Jedda Bhaar is 10 Frazulas, and a Frazula of Jedda is half a Mocha Frazula, or 14½ lb. Furthermore, we make bold, in the humble hope of a favorable interpretation, to add hereto some of our modest considerations regarding what usefulness and profit this trade might have for the Honorable Company, and how it could most conveniently be conducted. First, since the Bengal linens, as is apparent, are the principal merchandise that are sold most steadily and in the greatest quantities, yielding the highest profits, this voyage should not be undertaken except by way of Bengal. Following the customary blessings upon His High Honour's precious person, the contents of this read as follows: Furthermore, all these lines contain the truth, because I am bound to His High Honour; and should Your Honour ask how matters stand with my trading city, it remains as before, in a stable and flourishing state, without any or the least change regarding the Honourable Company. Further, I communicate to Your Honour that an Honourable Company's ship from Bengal has arrived here, whose skipper sold in Jeddah the merchandise that he had bought cheaply from the French at Mocha, with the help of an Arab who acted as clerk and interpreter. Departed by the English vessel the Success Galley via the Basra route on the 16th of August last, we were honored to receive letters from the High Government, both from the fatherland, with their High Noblenesses and Most Honorable very esteemed letters of 20 November 1745, and from the respective Western trading posts, as well as from your High Noblenesses with the yacht the Leijdzaamheijt on 25 June, Thuys ten Donk aforementioned on 7 July, together with the free merchant vessel the Avanturier on the 25th of the same month thereafter, and lastly by the vessel mentioned in the margin; but formal reply to which, as stated, under favorable interpretation, we still suspend for this time. However, concerning the packet of papers also brought with the first-cited vessel the Leijdzaamheijt, we state that upon its inspection in our session of the 26th thereafter, it was observed to have been forced open and sealed anew with four different seals, as well as the matter of the death on the voyage hither of the master of that vessel, Cornelisz Jacob Flodder, and because one could rightfully wish to know the cause thereof, From Persia, the 22nd of December 1747. for which cause we did not think it amiss to interrogate the junior merchants Johannis ten Hove and Matthijs Krijgsman, who also came over, and who have given us such satisfactory written explanation thereof as can be seen in the said resolution, to which, to avoid prolixity, we request to refer. Meanwhile, according to the two resolutions submitted in that meeting, we have seen and considered the compulsion of the crew to call at Barka, situated on the opposite Arabian coast, to obtain water and refreshments; for which necessary circumstance was granted both the expenditure incurred there amounting to 64 mamudis at ƒ19:4, and, according to two ship declarations accepted for communication, the cutting of eight fathoms of their everyday rope, as well as, on account of the heavy leak, providing the vessel with twelve coolies From Persia, the 22nd of December 1747. in order that it, with the cargo it then still contained, would not be exposed to worse danger. Tuisten Donk, of which on the day after its arrival at the outer roads on the 7th of the said month by Lieutenant Muller were delivered to us Your Right Noblenesses' aforesaid very revered dispatch of 15 April of the previous year, one has, in compliance with the stern orders contained therein, given him as quickly as possible his dispatch to his destined place, Bandar-e Boucher; provided with a general letter according to which those officers could govern themselves in view of the constant troubles there, for in case those roads could not be approached, he should then touch at the island of Kareek to inform the commissioners thereof by a well-provided boat or vessel, and at the same time also provide himself with a pilot, while the said officers are also further ordered therein to take the commissioners on board their vessel, along with the Honorable Company's effects, should they find themselves distressed on account of the cited troubles. Meanwhile, because of our scarce stock of 700 pounds of gunpowder and likewise the constant ruptures here, we were forced to unload from this vessel 3000 lb or 60 barrels or indeed the entire quantity, since Basra does not need any gunpowder anyway, and on account of our dire need of crewmen on the sloop De Valk, having requested from its Captain-Lieutenant Govert Welle a mate and 4 sailors, he provided us with the former, but excused himself regarding the remainder; and in return for which, upon the request made by those officers, a balance scale with 500 pounds weight, and also provisions, were granted to them on loan, there being subsequently, in the repeatedly mentioned resolution of 8 September, both accepted for communication the muster roll of Nieuwalcheren, which arrived here with 6 dead alongside one missing soldier and Moor, as according to the two reports submitted thereof regarding the inspection of the stowage of that vessel, as nothing could be said in that regard, and in view of the resolution passed by those officers on 20 July and the capability alleged therein of the sailor Johannes Pietersz van Sonderen for the service of steward's mate, the provisional appointment of the same and the increased salary from f12:- to f14:- per month were accordingly approved, subject to Your Right Noblenesses' further approval, as well as the requested advanced pay for his crew, and furthermore, according to the estimate of 30 October last, upon their submitted request, such an entrenchment was made as mentioned here before under patience, so that also at the session of 25 November, upon their written request likewise submitted in that regard, some sailors from the aforesaid Avonturier, and also upon the proposal made by the English agent here, Master Savage, some sailors of that nation from the native ship Heathcoat, destined for Mocha and wrecked on the island of Socotra on 18 June last, commanded by Captain Jonathan Cape who sailed from Europe in the latter part of February, were likewise granted passage alongside the first-named, partly for reasons that one could not well refuse this request and also because there was indeed employment for them on this vessel in exchange for food. From Persia, 22 December 1747 State of the Realm Rebellion in the realm, concerning which mention was made in our recent covering letter sent by horse, that the ruler was nourishing it everywhere in the upper lands; and the rebellion feared therefrom took effect on 13 April of this year, as on that date 35 to 40 trankis arrived here from the Arab coast carrying approximately 4000 rebel troops, having as their head one Mir Ali Sultan, who were followed on the 27th of that month by their supreme warrior Galieds Chan with 3000 men. And although all were engaged and resisted by the city governor here, Fazal Ali Sultan, they nevertheless raged here not a little, proceeding at night to plunder, rob, and burn, and even to murder many people for their property, such that every one of the inhabitants of this place took flight to the opposite shore. And because of this uprising, finding ourselves likewise in no small distress, the necessary vigilance was also recommended to everyone at his appointed post for the preservation of the Company's effects. This situation lasted until 8 June following, and he, Galieds Chan, and his said second-in-command and further adherents having departed in the meantime, a certain calm was restored here. This realm having thus lingered and drifted on for so long, the death of the tyrant Nadir Shah has finally been reported as true, and confirmed by the firing of the Moorish fort here on 15 October last. He was reportedly massacred at the order of his nephew or brother's son, Ali Qoli Chan, by the commander of the ruler's bodyguard, Saleh Chan, on an occasion when this tyrant had intended once again to sacrifice to his bloodthirsty and avaricious nature (as they say) all who passed under the name of a Persian. But in order not to enter into extensive and prolix detail on this matter and to avoid frustrating and detaining Your Right Excellencies in your honored attention to matters of greater weight, we shall with Your Right Excellencies' permission only report further: that the murdered ruler was prevented in his intention by one of his harem boys, who, having overheard this agreement between His Majesty and the Afghan chief (who was ordered to execute this planned general massacre that same night when Nadir Shah himself was done away with), made this known to the aforementioned Saleh Chan. From Persia, the 22nd of December 1747 leave, and that a pan may be sent back hither, so that, alongside others informally ongoing, they may benefit from their wages; and also in our aforementioned resolution, for such reasons as are reviewed therein, to prevent many scandals, it has further been resolved to replace the chief master of this shore, Ian Goosman, by taking from on board on the 8th of this month Cornelis Panus, chief master, who was brought ashore to render his service to this shore again. The Surat regulation of servants so graciously sent to us by Your High Excellencies, which made us blush with shame, seeing that people here had not been active in that regard sooner, and for which the first signatory very humbly comes to ask pardon; having seen and attentively reviewed it at the meeting held on the 28th of August, the same has retained its counterpart to also draft a concept in so far as it would best suit the pro-rata of our household here in this country, which has also been carried out and which accompanies the enclosures at the esteemed disposal of Your High Excellencies; in such manner that the considerations regarding free navigation and trade in writing per the Huijs ten Donk are likewise to take effect; meanwhile, we have already expressed our opinions verbally, as is more broadly demonstrated in the resolution taken on the 11th of this month, and to which we request leave of Your High Excellencies to be permitted to refer. We also duty-bound communicate to Your High Excellencies that, by a letter dated the 15th of April last addressed to us by the honorable orphan masters on the occasion that their reverences were requested to do so by the orphan masters in Middelburg in Zeeland itself, a request was made to the pupil of the last-mentioned Chamber, currently junior assistant in loco here, Johannes Livines de Forme, to hand over a small sum of three hundred guilders; which we, in accordance with that reasonable request, have granted in our estimate of the 8th of September aforementioned, to pay out the said sum to this person at the ordinary exchange and cash rate of 4½ percent, with the dutiful request that we may again be favored with Your High Excellencies' highly esteemed orders for that purpose.
