Approval Regarding which certain goods the ship's officers, having been asked in our meeting held on the 11th of this month whether they had received everything properly and to satisfaction, and having replied affirmatively thereto, why the ship delays, and with an ardent wish and prayer not only that the bearer of this may arrive at your High Nobilities' presence without misfortune and with the utmost speed, but also that our actions, though humble yet performed according to the circumstances of the time, may in due course be viewed with a favorable eye by your High Nobilities; and desiring this from the bottom of our hearts, after having first commended your High Nobilities' precious persons, as well as the interests of the Dutch Company here, into God's precious keeping, we conclude this and with due respect declare to be and remain, Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed, and Far-Ruling Lords, your High Nobilities' faithful and obedient servants. Resolution 1. 2. 3. 37 From Persia, under date 22 December 1747. Resolution taken in the Council of Policy at Gamron. Monday, the 10th of April, Anno 1747. All present. The cruel, inhuman, indeed God-forsaken actions of the ruler, or rather tyrant, of these lands, Nadir Shah, and his adherents, have, God forbid, to our heart-rending sorrow once again provided us with grievous matter to be obliged to deliberate today concerning the damaged and no less deplorable trading post of Isfahan; from where the servants have communicated to us by letter of the 27th of February of this year, brought here on the 28th of March following by the couriers Rostam and Marcus, that notwithstanding they had, in conformity with the previously advised opinion in their letters of the 26th of December of the past year, resolved upon the approach of the monarch to abandon the Company's dwellings and have them guarded by only two servants, as well as to take up residence in the suburb of Julfa, a place where the Armenians have their permanent domicile, with the intention thereby to avoid the reception of the tyrant and the making of noteworthy gifts, this had nevertheless turned out to be vain, fruitless, and contrary to their good intentions and expectations; since the interpreter, while they were in the meantime busy packing their goods together, was summoned by the governor Mir Hasan Khan and told that they should hold themselves ready to wait upon His Majesty; and when that interpreter thereupon answered that his highness might be pleased to consider, in the manner as had been repeatedly stated, that they were only to be regarded as housekeepers, and that the bookkeeper Busshens was also indisposed and on that account intended to proceed to the said suburb for the recovery of his health, and requested an excuse in that regard, the reply was that he could do nothing in that matter, that they must not nourish themselves with that vain hope of obtaining an exemption, seeing that he as governor was bound to give full information of this to His Majesty, and that they ought well to know that they would have to deal with Nadir Shah, etc.; upon which notice the servants, becoming fearful, recanted from their previously taken diversion and at the same time resolved to keep quiet in the Company's dwelling and let the matter take its course; but having learned that the squandering British, upon a small letter obtained from the mullah bashi or supreme cleric, were already on the morning of the 10th of December of the past year marching thither, they, after much deliberation back and forth and having considered the detrimental consequences that were to result therefrom in case of non-execution, finally also complied, and received the said ruler, and on the demand of the miyar bashi, assay master Hassanalie Can, and the said supreme cleric, notwithstanding they strongly protested against it, and at the same time made known their incapacity, and moreover requested to be exempt from paying a visit, presented gifts in goods to the value of 16058 mamudis or ƒ 4817: 8: —, and to the said chief ministers an amount of 5555 mamudis or ƒ 1666: 10: —, the road expenses incurred during receptions amounting to roughly 625 mamudis or ƒ 187: 10: —, making together 22238 mamudis or ƒ 6671: 8: —. Yet after much running about and searching, they finally found 2 Moorish merchants who placed in their hands man 22820:—; with the condition to have to repay the same after the expiration of 4 months with 40 percent or man 9128 advance, and regarding which they then requested our accommodation, and also very humbly implored that the mentioned monies, with its nearly expired interest, might be duly paid at its time, because otherwise bad consequences were again likely to flow from this, considering that the one and the other occurred per fas et nefas, and had been impossible to avoid. From Persia under date 22 December 1747. Resolution Taken in the Council of Policy at Gamron Thursday the 8th of June Anno 1747, in the forenoon at 9 o'clock, all Present. The council having appeared and convened together upon the convocation of the Honorable Commander, and God's Holy Name having been fervently invoked for help and assistance, there were initially presented 4 Bassoura letters dated 23 January, 25 February, 20 March, and 14 April of this year. In the first-mentioned of these, the employees come to communicate to us the fatal encounters that the sloop de Valk met with on its voyage thither, submitting a report delivered by its master and a deposition rendered by two witnesses concerning the poor condition of that small vessel, seeing that near Darcan it was deprived of its daily anchor with 25 fathoms of rope and one fluke of the kedge anchor, as well as the boat and rudder, so that they would then have been prevented from sailing up the Bassoura river had it not pleased Heaven to provide herein and to send to their relief two small vessels, which likewise intended to go thither, with whose masters it was contracted to tow that small vessel into the river for an amount of 500 mahmudis, being 150 guilders. While they implored our indulgence regarding this matter, considering this was done for the preservation of ship and souls, etc., and seeing that these fatalities may not be attributed to neglect of the officers in the one matter as well as the other, it was therefore approved, with thanksgiving to His Divine Majesty Who has so graciously preserved this ship and souls, and at the same time it was deemed proper to have the trade bookkeeper write off what was lost in the equipment book. Yet, notwithstanding all these fatalities, the employees nevertheless promise to use all possible speed to effect its repair after its unloading, which was then accepted as communication, together with some further details concerning that small vessel. And furthermore, having seen the amount of their balances, as well as the sales made from the ultimate of August last to present, being in the time of 4 and a half months, to the amount of 9392 and a half mahmudis, item the state of their treasury with the inclusion of the aforesaid amount up to 302646 and a quarter mahmudis at 90793 guilders, 17 stivers, 8 pence, of which the balance still amounted to 297646 and a half mahmudis at 89294 guilders, 3 stivers, 8 pence. However, it has appeared to us once again as a mark of disobedience that the large and small lungis, as well as the butadar chintzes, were sold at lower prices, since they have already been quite earnestly recommended several times not to dispose of those linens below, but at their fixed prices. For which reasons it was then deemed proper and resolved to order the employees, under a sharp reproach, to reimburse in cash into the treasury what was realized below the price, and in the future to take care that the Company's trade goods there are disposed of at higher prices, since the recent sale made appeared to us somewhat cheap and did not by far equal the prices of those which have changed owners here for a considerable time past. But their expenses made in the months of November and December last to the amount of ordinary daily expenses, 1875 and a half mahmudis, 562 guilders, 13 stivers, and extraordinary expenses, 100 mahmudis, 30 guilders, making together 1975 and a half mahmudis, 592 guilders, 13 stivers, as well as the repairs made to the Company's lodge up to 894 and a half mahmudis at 268 guilders, 7 stivers, were passed on the grounds that these did not exceed bounds, under this restriction nevertheless that in everything they shall have to observe economy as much as possible, in order by that means to prune the expenses and increase the profits. Meanwhile, their request to return the cinnamon and Ceylon coffee beans lying there unsaleable, as well as the green-dyed linens and soosies, was finally rejected, and on the contrary it was deemed proper to order them by outgoing letter to dispose of the same by all mercantile means, so that this will also be very expressly recommended to them regarding the candy sugar and benzoin, notwithstanding that the employees allege as reasons regarding their poor vent that our competitors still have some sugar candy on hand and there is no lack yet of the Jomlak, as well as that the benzoin is black and of poor sort, but the cinnamon and Ceylon coffee are not in demand at all, item that the green-dyed linens and soosies are not in demand on account of their high price, being however furthermore accepted for communication.

Honours contained in a certain instruction of the Visitor-General will also be relieved of such 11½ lb of coffee beans as the Council of Policy here previously imposed as compensation, which have now been settled by the said residents, while we have also taken note for communication of the cargo in the aforementioned chaloup De Valk to the amount of spiasters and sjallotten mamoedies 241500:– at ƒ72450:—:— with which will then be dealt here according to custom, and the servants will be ordered in outgoing letters to remit hither in the future as much nadries or other good current money as will be possible, since it is entirely impossible for us here to exchange the first-cited currency for current specie. Regarding now the residents' aforementioned last letter of 24 April, we observed firstly that actions were taken in conformity with the order concerning the compensation for the lesser yield on the sale of 226 pieces of large longies and 36 small, item 14 pieces of chintzen botidaar, as well as concerning the imposed payment of such deficits as occurred at the general inventory taken on the ultimate of August of the past year, and were brought into the treasury by the said Dumee to the amount of m.s 460:– at ƒ138.—, while his request for restitution of half of the aforesaid amount has been demanded and assigned to the attorneys of the deceased chief Ian Marcus, and further it was approved that the residents wrote off to the account of the previous year's profit and loss such ƒ1080:-13:8- as were lost on the cash sent from here to Batavia per Oosterhoud, since this also agrees with our order previously given in the case subject; but their request to release the unsaleable Ceylon coffee beans lying there, because nothing and even less than mus. 12 at ƒ3:12.— was offered for the man of 25 lb, was rejected, and it was also approved to persist in our resolution previously taken in that regard, in such manner as has also been understood regarding the cinnamon, since it will be helped to a buyer there considerably better than here. From Persia under date 22 December 1747. pay accounts on which he formerly stood credited by the Honorable Company for f72:11:3 to be permitted to exchange for cash, in the hope and expectation that what has been transacted in this matter will in due course be crowned with the gracious approval of their High Excellencies at Batavia. Thus done, resolved, and decreed in the Dutch factory at Gamron at the time as stated in the heading hereof. Resolution taken in the Council of Policy at Gamron on Monday the 26th of June 1747. All present. Whereas the yacht De Leijdzaamheijd arrived yesterday in this roadstead, today, after invoking the Lord's holy name, a start was made with the honored reading of the Honorable Company's highly respected papers. But because it was observed beforehand that the packet received by the said vessel had been broken open and sealed with four different seals, it was therefore resolved to have the junior merchants Johannes ten Hove and Matthijs Krijgsman—in view of the death during the voyage hither of the commander on that small vessel, Cornelis Jacobsz. Flodder—verify the motives in the case in writing, in order by that means to discover the true cause thereof. Consequently, this took effect during the drafting of this resolution, and the said report in substance contains the following: We, the undersigned, Johannes ten Hove and Mattheijs Krijgsman, both junior merchants in the service of the Honorable Company, having been designated as passengers on the Honorable Company's yacht De Leijdzaamheijd, declare by order of the honorable and esteemed Abraham van de Welle, senior merchant and director of this Persian directorate, that at our departure from the Cochin roadstead, being the 9th of March of this year, the commander of the said small vessel, Jacob Cornelisz. Flodder, showed us certain sailing orders dated the 6th of the aforesaid month, signed by the honorable and esteemed Rinicus Ciersma, Commander of the Malabar Coast, wherein the aforementioned Flodder was expressly ordered, if possible and if the wind served him, to run down the Malabar coast up to the latitude of Calicut lying in the northern latitude, or at most to 12 degrees north latitude, and then to steer through the Northern Maldives, as it was not advisable to run down a higher latitude along that coast for fear of the Angrian pirates. However, having barely reached that designated latitude, we encountered a squadron of sizable Portuguese warships, to which we showed our flag. But the rear admiral, who approached us on the starboard side, was not satisfied with the showing of the Prince's flag, but immediately fired a shot with live ammunition across the bow of our defenseless vessel, which is a sign among all knowledgeable seafarers to heave to. But we were barely under the wind when the second shot with live ammunition followed across the stern. We then saw a boat set off from the said ship, which came alongside our vessel, in which was a lieutenant of the marines, who brought us the report that one of our senior officers had to come on board the said vessel with a pass or sea-letter to show whence and whither we were bound. Whereupon the aforementioned Flodder informed us that he had received no pass or sea-letter at Batavia, but that he thought to find it in the Honorable Company's packet. Therefore, the aforementioned commander found himself forced to open it in the presence of us, the undersigned. We examined nothing but the register, but it was lost effort; we found not the slightest indication of a sea-letter or pass. Whereupon we immediately sealed it again, and then had to make do with what we had, namely two sailing orders, one from Batavia and the other from Cochin, with which we dispatched the acting chief mate, Hans Hendriksz. Westerwerff, to show them. He was immediately released upon sight of the Malabar sailing order, for the reason that it was signed by the honorable and esteemed Commander Rinikus Ciersma, which signature the said Portuguese rear admiral thought he recognized. Whereupon he sent the said chief mate back to our small vessel, wishing us God's precious blessing as well as a prosperous and safe voyage.
