From Souratta under Date 25 May 1749 concerns, that from them is still very far off, the former are by nature enemies of all Europeans, and it is therefore no wonder that, following the inclination of their passions, they have also sought to harm us when we, according to the rules of prudence, did not wish to meddle in their messes; but the latter are by nature our neighbors, through social intercourse our friends, and on account of the strong treaties between our mutual Sovereigns, our allies, and one must therefore hold it so much the more against them that they have treated us as enemies and, moreover, sought to plunge us into ruin not, as the saying goes, openly, but in a deceitful, shameful manner. Of minor matters I shall not even speak, such as that they refused a proper union between us and them for the welfare of the city, see resolution of the 25th of December 1747 and 27 January 1748, overturned the peace and union made by us between Safberchan and Mia Atsjent, 14 March 1748, incited Mia Atsjent against us and embittered him, 23 March 1748, accused us in public writings with manifest lies, 26 March just mentioned, broke the contract made concerning the deserters, 11th of December 1748, and even after that date belied the promise made in that regard, 28 December just mentioned. It is also neither our power nor our intellect that has delivered us from these apparent miseries, for the first is very slight, and the other has often already been at its wit's end; but it is solely God's undeserved grace that has delivered us from this threatening danger and preserved us, so that in this year we may also assemble together with a new courage and with a content heart, once again advance the interests of our lords and masters, and thus be able to triumph in joy over the harmful snares of our envious and jealous friends. Let us then give the honor to God alone and thank him from the depths of our soul for this ineffable benefit. Let us praise his goodness before the whole world, that he has helped us hitherto, and let us fervently pray to God the Lord that he may further powerfully aid us, fill our hearts with his spirit, direct our councils for the best, and crown our undertakings with his blessing; then nothing shall be able to harm us. We shall, with an easy conscience, do here together in unity, and each separately in his function, that which our duty entails, and finally there shall surely fall to our share that honor and that portion which God-fearing and faithful servants can always hope and expect with full confidence from their lords. From Souratta under date 25 May 1749. When we last had the honor on the 24th of May of this year to report to Your Honorable Worships on the proceedings of our commission, the principal matter consisted of that which concerned the amnesiac skipper Arnoldus Laforcade. His estate was settled as far as could be done here, his money was counted into the Honorable Company's treasury on bill of exchange, and he stood ready to be brought by a separate vessel to the ship Nieuw Walcheren and handed over to the commander Jan Fredrik de Wilde, with whom we had already made a contract for 240 rupees for sustenance during the voyage to Batavia, and had also already delivered this sum, together with some goods of the skipper, to him. However, all this came to no effect. The ship Nieuw Walcheren having remained in the Brootchia River, we had to keep Laforcade here as well, and anew take upon ourselves the necessary care for his person and goods, which consisted of this: that we boarded him with the chief surgeon Martinus Falk for 60 rupees per month; and of everything that, according to the entry in our protocol of the aforesaid 15 May, was to be delivered to De Wilde, and had also already been partly delivered, we gave the beverages for the voyages together with an octant to the clerk for safekeeping, but handed over the remainder to the said chief surgeon for the skipper's daily use. At that time nothing went missing nor remained absent except for a small biscuit barrel and the above-mentioned 240 rupees, both of which the above-mentioned De Wilde declared he could not return, as the necessary provisions had already been bought for the latter and had been brought and remained with the former on Nieuw Walcheren, on which account he was also not addressed about it again by us. 1837 From Souratta under date 25 May 1749. And since the reasons for this, as well as for all the rest, are recorded in detail in the protocol that was successively kept by us of what occurred, we take the liberty of presenting the same to Your Honorable Worships alongside this as a further extension of the foregoing, and to expand this solely with this humble request from the first signatory, that it may please Your Honorable Worships to dismiss him from this commission, which he has now administered for more than two years. The command over this, and at the same time the execution of our resolution, is entrusted to you, in the confidence that you will in all respects properly discharge your duty and will leave nothing of what you have to do undone, except that which in fact is impracticable and even impossible for you. Otherwise you are hereby reinforced and qualified with a general order to do, after sound deliberation of matters, whatever the circumstances of time and opportunity will best suggest to you, provided only that our objective is fulfilled and the Honourable Company's honour is not too much, or rather not recklessly, put at risk. Yet in order that you might be so much the better able to do this, we have at the same time judged it necessary to indicate in particular how you should, in our opinion, arrange the plan in order to make everything turn out well and satisfactorily, and this consists briefly in the following points: 1. Your first course is direct to the river of Brootchia, where you must send in the two hired horries, Retnager and Roepareel, and at the same time dispatch to the Brootchia factors with them the sealed packet that is enclosed herewith for that purpose. 3. The same shall also take place if you should happen to find this grab not on the roadstead of Bouwnager, but rather on that of Goga or thereabouts at sea; for that the same, not being met with at Bouwnager, must be sought at Goga and back and forth there, and close inquiry be made after its departure or whereabouts, you will easily be able to gather from what is stated above. For the following reason this paper is written: that Kadaar Jaarchan, son of Mirsa Abdul, grandson of Goodje Abdul Kadar, maternal grandson of Mersa Mhamet Nomen, together with Goodje Mhamet Assem, son of Goodje Abdul Rasiet, grandson of Goodje Mhamet Amiereckoe, residing within the city of Souratta, the former for his own portion, and the latter moreover as authorized proxy for that of Acberul Hessa Begum, daughter of Ressa Mhametchan, son of Mirsa Noer Hiddan Mhameth, grandson of Metsa Mhamet Nomen, acknowledged and declared, as they do hereby of their own free will present themselves, and made known that they, in the above-mentioned capacities and in the presence of two credible witnesses named Hedaij-et-ulla, son of Allabax, grandson of Hadje Abdul Kadar, and Nhamet Hosseen, after the aforesaid Goodje Asem had provided such convincing proofs of his power of attorney in this matter that they were judged completely acceptable, had sold three plots of flat land furnished with 11 tamarind trees, 1 ber tree, 1 neem tree, and 1 gundi tree, situated in the quarter of Naampoera within the outer city walls of Souratta, with the request that the qazi would be pleased to grant proper papers of this sale to the buyers according to the custom of this country. Which he in no way refused them, but nevertheless indicated that they must first demonstrate to him how or in what manner they had acquired those three plots of land, in order to be able to prepare the same with all the greater peace of mind. And thereupon they showed, with which was granted on the 22nd of Muharram in the year 1162, in the first year of the reign of King Ehmed Sjak, or according to our reckoning the 12th of January in the year 1749. Souratta, dated 25 May 1749. the strongest representations, that they had inherited them upon the decease of Mirsa Mhamet Monin, well known here, without ever having given any share therein to anyone else, nor having alienated anything thereof by sale. And whereas during the sale no such persons appeared who made any claim thereto, and the qazi for that reason had also given his consent to the granting of this paper, they therefore declared, at his request, to have sold, transferred, and ceded anew, as they do hereby sell, transfer, and cede the said three plots of land, with 14 various trees, to the Dutch Company, and in the name of the same into the hands of the kayastha Mhadoedas, son of Kieka Mettha and grandson of Madenzie, for a sum of seven thousand one hundred and forty Souratta current silver rupees. Who then also on his part declared to have bought the aforesaid three plots of land and 14 trees in and upon the name and on the account of the above-mentioned Dutch Company for a sum of 7140 rupees, to have received the money just mentioned for that purpose from the same, and in like manner to have paid the former owners in gratitude. While the qazi stands surety for the lawful sale from the one side as well as for the good payment from the other side, and consequently also binds himself mutually not only to warrant and defend them against all inquiries that might in time arise concerning this, but also to caution against everything that might occur regarding this matter.
