1897 From Souratte under date 25 May 1749 has sent the Brootchia river, you must not cross directly to the roads of Bouwnager at first, but linger to and fro at the mouth of the river until you have sent out the pilot vessel with the fastest sailing horrij to reconnoitre and properly investigate whether the pirates are still staying in those parts or not. 2. If they are not there or only in such small numbers that you have nothing to fear from them, then you must pursue your commission in all respects as stated forward from No. 3 to the end. But if they are substantial, you must for the present suspend the voyage thither, enter the Brootchia river with the whole fleet, inform the factors of your arrival, and, as stated, take over the return cargoes that will be brought to you. 3. Yet, in order that your commission, although thwarted by the pirates on the side of Goga and Bouwnager, may nevertheless be of some fruit on this side in case the governor of Brootchia should at times remain reluctant to let the goods salvaged from Nieuw Walcheren be shipped off as well, just as we have ordered the factors there to do their best to that end, so Bassoura From Souratta under date 25 May 1749 so you shall support them therein and lend as much strength as possible to their requests. 4. The 27th: two sailors of those who some time before had come over from the English ran away again, being Ritsert Hazitter from London, and Willem Rotjers from Bollonghton. From Souratta under date 26 May 1749 augmented with a postscript whereby the factors were ordered to bring to the knowledge of the Cashier upon his appearance there, that the people of Dhamagie had taken up position at Omrha and would allow no vessels to go up or down, and that he therefore, upon his return to the roads of Souratta, had to remain there until he had given notice of his arrival and received further orders. Thus done and resolved in the Honourable Company's garden at Souratta on the day, month, and year aforesaid. Was signed: J:n Schreuder, J:s Pecock, A:m Corn:s de la Haije, J:s Sanderus, C:r L:k Serff, and Bdijn Rijser. Wednesday From Souratta under date 28 May 1749 Wednesday 1903 The 19 February Anno 1749. All Present Regarding the English gentlemen and their improper conduct, note having already been taken several times in the resolutions of this assembly for some time past, and on that account a resolution having still been taken on 28 December of the past year to employ all possible politeness towards them, in order to ward off the affronts they have sought to cause us, and to cause them to fall back upon themselves. Thus the Director makes known in this regard that, everything having now taken another turn, the chief of that nation, Mr. Thomas Dorill, not only made all conceivable offers toward the establishing and maintaining of a permissible mutual friendship, but Bassoura but also Mia Atsjent exerted his utmost power and, by his strong insistence, as if by force compelled both parties to forget everything past and to live with one another in unity, since according to his statement, as long as this did not happen, peace would never come to the city, nor would the dispute with the Marhettus ever be settled. And that the Secretary having judged a private conference in person to be the best, His Honour was well disposed to enter into the same, yet had nevertheless deemed it necessary first to deliberate with the assembly concerning this and to take a firm resolution as to how far such a friendly mediation should extend, requesting therefore that everyone consider the matter well, and in giving his advice, also look at the circumstances of time and opportunity, since it was certain that, as Mia Atsjent said, such an open hostility between both nations could not but be detrimental to the interests of this city and consequently to those of the Lords Principals. The Council having heard everything, judges it to be a hard matter now to settle amicably and consequently almost as if in silence with the English gentlemen that which was executed by them with so much noise and committed so publicly for no other purpose than solely to affront the Honourable Company and its servants here in public. But on the other hand, also taking into consideration that when two such principal parties in the city are divided, or at least have the name thereof, the Marhetties profit all too much thereby and will never come to a reasonable accommodation, and that although friendship should now be made between both upon the strong insistence of Mia Atsjent, it nevertheless did not follow that for that reason all claims should be waived and no satisfaction demanded on account of what had happened; thus everyone considered that for the present, on account of the circumstances and the dire condition of the city and inhabitants, it might very well take place and was also absolutely necessary to settle the differences Bassoura differences amicably as much as possible, and to establish a permissible friendship and union, even if it were only for the eye of the native. Company, then by no means to proceed with the negotiations, but by form of a reply to the letter of Mr. Dorill entered in the resolution of 29 November last, or else by another writing, not only to demonstrate everything that has occurred in detail, but also on that account to demand justice and satisfaction in an emphatic manner. Furthermore, the Lord Director produces an account of the expenses incurred by the Hon. The two youngest members of this council went to meet the first two mentioned and re- ceived them at the palanquin, but the lord Director, with the remaining members, met them below at the stairs. Having been seated a little while, they requested on behalf of Mia Atsjent that the lord Director might do him the honor and come to him, and no sooner were the compliments here- about exchanged, or to the son of Mia Atsjent and the land customs officer gifts were presented, which were very substantial, while the others received only rose water and betel nut. Then departed Mier Machomet Heijaat, and the son of Mia From 1915 From Souratta under date 25 May 1749 Mia Atsjent, lingering yet a little while, went with his palanquin beside that of the lord Director to the Durbar, all the others following, together with the council members in proper order behind them. The lord Director having appeared in the great audience hall of the Governor, Mia Atsjent stood up, and having embraced His Honor according to the native manner, placed him on his right hand, close beside himself in that same manner as he sat, which has never been done before. The council members were seated beside the lord Director so that His Honor had them right before him. Mia Atsjent showed himself very pleased, and having spoken for over an hour with the lord Director concerning the necessary union of all European nations, and various other matters for the well- being of the city and its inhabitants, the customary gifts were brought, which were accompanied by a sumptuous 1 Bassoura an Souratta under date 25 May 1749 horse for the lord Director. From Souratta, dated 26 May 1749 1921 Having been summoned, the Honorable Second and Head Administrator submits a memorandum of the differences discovered and found during the collation of the commercial trade books of the year 1747/48, which are about to be closed, against the reports of the general survey submitted on the ultimo of August last; alongside a report which was delivered to the Lord Director on 3 February of this year by the joint members of this assembly in compliance with the resolution of 30 September of the past year concerning the further inspection and examination of the broadcloths and velvets lying in the warehouses; reading as follows: To the Honorable, Respected Lord Jan Schreuder Director and Supreme Commander of this Directorate Honorable, Respected, Ruling Lord In compliance with what was resolved on 30 September past, to have a further inspection made by the joint members of the Political Council regarding the condition of the broadcloths and velvets mentioned in the report submitted by the commissioners on the ultimo of August, we proceeded to the trade warehouses for that purpose, where we accurately inspected the various items and found them in such condition as we have the honor to show to Your Honorable Respect below, namely: Red Broadcloths 1 piece scarlet red No. 9147, length 56 ells. Of this, the wrapper to the length of 3 ells is infested by moths, and to prevent further decay it was torn off from it. The remaining 53 ells are good, but the color is somewhat poor. 1 ditto No. 9139, length 56 ells. Of this, the color is poor, and the entire piece is here and there somewhat damaged in the folds by moths. 1 ditto No. 151, length 60½ ells. The color and quality are exceedingly poor, and the wrapper, 3 ells long, is whole, and the remaining 57½ ells are consistently damaged by moths in all the folds, and thus judged entirely unfit as a gift for the regents or any person of distinction. 1 ditto No. 153, length 60½ ells. The color is slightly better than that of No. 151, but the cloth in itself is very poor, loose-woven, and coarse. Of this likewise From Souratta, dated 27 May 1749 From Souratta, dated 25 May 1749 1923 3 ells are whole, and the remaining 57½ ells are stained in the folds and somewhat affected by moths, consequently judged unfit as a gift for the regents and other great persons, but suitable for people of lesser extraction. 1 piece No. — length 27 ells, completely and heavily damaged by moths, but especially to the length of 6 ells found to be unusable; the remainder could still serve as a gift for low-ranking people, but not for persons of distinction. 1 ditto No. — length 3½ ells, damaged everywhere by moths. Light Blue Broadcloth 1 ditto No. 8650, length 56 ells, is indeed slightly damaged here and there in the folds by moths, but notwithstanding this, it is good and suitable for gifting and use. Parrot Green Broadcloth 1 piece No. — length 41½ ells, is very coarse, loose-woven, stained, and of poor color, also unfit as a gift; furthermore, up to the length of 3 ells, or the wrapper, it is so damaged by moths that it is entirely unusable. Dark Green Broadcloth 1 piece No. — length 25½ ells. Of this, 3 ells are completely eaten through, and the remaining 22½ ells are likewise damaged throughout by moths and white ants to such an extent that it has been judged unfit both for gifting and for use. Gold Yellow Broadcloth 1 piece No. — length 21 ells. It is found that the whole is damaged by white ants and moths, and is unfit as a gift, with the first 2 to 3 ells of it being entirely unusable. 1 ditto No. — length 9 ells, damaged throughout and unfit as a gift. Black Drap de Dame 1 piece No. — length 56 ells, greatly damaged everywhere by moths and white ants, but especially pitted with small holes in all the folds. 1 ditto No. — length 10½ ells. Of this, two ells are completely eaten through, and the remainder is somewhat damaged by moths. Red Perpetuanas 4 pieces are found to be good upon inspection. Dutch Velvets 1 piece purple, length 83¼ ells, is found good. 1 ditto black, length 67½ ells, entirely struck through by mold and slightly altered in color toward a mouse-gray tone, yet scarcely passable. 1 ditto crimson red, length 103 ells, unfit as a gift because of the bad creases and folds with which the entire piece is covered. 1 ditto red, length 21¼ ells, affected on the outside with black stains and white speckles caused by mold, and also showing through on the inside, yet still usable. 1925 From Souratta, dated 25 May 1749 1 piece purple violet, length 5½ ells, is found good. 1 small piece dark blue, length 73 ells, well over half of the piece affected by mold, yet still passable as a gift. 1 ditto ditto blue, length 16¾ ells, is found good. A piece 56 ells long, No. 9139, the color thereof is poor and the whole piece is here and there somewhat damaged in the folds by the moth. A piece 60½ ells long, No. 151, the color and quality thereof are uncommonly poor and the wrapper 3 ells long is whole and the remaining 57½ ells throughout in all the folds damaged by the moth, thus totally unfit as a gift for the regents or any person of distinction. From Souratta, dated 25 May 1749 he was notified that if in the future he does not proceed more attentively and manage his administration better, as well as ensure that all such mistakes and errors are no longer found, he will then have to submit to undergoing such a correction as will certainly be imposed on him, besides the compensation for everything that is damaged, spoiled, or missing. Hereafter, six petitions are reviewed, presented to the Director by the ad-interim Master of the Equipage, Secretary of Policy, Warehouse Master, Ensign, Head Surgeon, and Dispenser, concerning some goods and effects found unfit in their administrations as of the ultimate of August of the past year; and the necessary matters regarding these having been considered, the decisions are, according to custom, placed in the margin of the petitions, and those documents are subsequently incorporated entirely into this document. From Surat dated 25 May 1749 1959 Regarding the executed commission which, according to the resolutions of 22 January and 5 February just past, was assigned to him, to report in this manner To the Honorable, Respected Sir, Mr. Jan Schreuder, Director and Commander-in-Chief of this Direction, together with the Council. Honorable, Respected, Ruling Sir and Gentlemen, After Your Honors were pleased to deliver to me a secret Instruction dated 26 January last, together with an appendix to the same from the following day, by which I was to govern myself in the expedition that was entrusted to me according to the resolutions of the 22nd and 26th of that same month, I immediately boarded the narrow ship De Jonge Susanna, assumed command, issued the necessary orders and signal letters to all commanders of the Company vessels, subsequently set sail promptly with three narrow ships, two of the Honorable Company and two hired horis, as well as a hired fishing vessel, and arrived on the 29th following before the sandbanks, where that night, very unexpectedly, the boat of the hori De Lastdrager came alongside me, and it was made known by the native sailors aboard her, From Surat: dated 26 May 1749 that the European quartermaster Andries Lourens and sailor Andries Willemsz had deserted from the same to the English, and giving the following account of what had occurred: That the said quartermaster had pretended to have received orders from the pennant-bearer that, when a shot was fired, he should then come aboard the same with the said sailor and both of their baggage, to remain there, and that two others would be sent in their place; departing subsequently, after the watch was set for the first time in the evening, from the ship in the boat, and having themselves rowed by a long detour, instead of toward the pennant-bearer, toward one of the English gallivats lying off Dumas, under the pretense of urgently needing to speak with a certain Templeman, who had the command thereof; having arrived there, they went over to the same with their goods and sent the boat back with the message that they would remain there. Whereupon I immediately, subject to Your Honors' favorable approval, sent the sailmaker Jacob Deldijn and a sailor, Hendrik Thiel, to that small vessel in place of the deserters, and gave command over the same to the former. Meanwhile there have also arrived the two hired horris Roepoveel and Retnager, laden with some packs from the Company's suppliers, in addition to 1 bell, 1 fire hose, and 7 sails from Nieuw Walcheren, as well as various goods from native merchants on freight to fill up space. And since the factors on the last-mentioned date wrote to me that no more goods than those just mentioned were to be sent off, I immediately on the same day dispatched a brief note to the same, writing therein to inform me as soon as possible where the remaining salvaged goods of Nieuw Walcheren are staying, and for what reasons those were not sent to us as well. The factors answered thereto that, notwithstanding all effort expended, they have not been able to get the same released, because the governor pretends that without permission of the new Sewas Pandet, who has not yet arrived in the city, he cannot possibly permit such; whereupon, in conformity with Your Honorable Worships' order, I requested said governor in a native note in brief words to declare himself positively whether he is inclined to let the goods of Nieuw Walcheren go or not; which note, with the secret missive from Your Honorable Worships, was sent to the factors that same evening at 9 o'clock, and 9 d Bassoura From Souratta, under date 25 May 1749 and at the same time I ordered them in Your Honorable Worships' name to deliver the first in person to the governor, and if upon that he does not let the goods follow, that they must then open the second and, without the least loss of time, carry out what is ordered therein. The next day, being the 8th, I received in the evening at eight o'clock a note from the factors containing communication that they had delivered the native note themselves, but having obtained no satisfactory answer to it, the secret letter was opened by them, and according to the order contained therein, requested the goods of Nieuw Walcheren or their dismissal from the governor, but the latter was granted, and that they consequently would come over to me during the late night or the day thereafter; which they accomplished on the 9th at noon, bringing with them the family of the first factor. In the evening at eleven o'clock, with the beginning of the ebb, I departed from there again with all the Honorable Company's and hired vessels, but having come to anchor near the village of Callatra on the 10th at noon to stem the tide, the quartermaster of the horri De Uijtwinnen (who had gotten ahead with the other horris) came to report that while sailing he had encountered two vessels coming from outside, which were recognized as pirates, and that this was confirmed not only by the natives of the horris with him, but also by the inhabitants of said village, he thereupon fired two E 1965 From Souratta, under date 25 May 1749 two warning shots ahead, but they not having struck their sails, he thereupon fired in earnest, and took both, as well as that he had found that one man had been shot dead. Accordingly, we repaired that very same day, in the morning at eight o'clock, to the said chief regent, delivered the native letter mentioned above, and, after sitting for a little while, probed what his intentions were. But as he gave no other answer thereto than his inability to act without the consent of the Sewas Pandet Malaar genues, who was not present in the city, we returned to the lodge and immediately opened the secret missive of 27 January last, which had been addressed by Your Right Honorable, and immediately executed what was commanded therein, by asking the said governor whether he was willing to give his consent to our departure, or else to the shipment of the goods of Nieuw Walcheren.
