From Persia, 1 October 1748 Foreign shipping in the Gulf having been scarce, it had to be withheld by us accordingly; and as the pay books of this past year have also been prepared and were revised at the session of 9 September last, as well as found free of errors, we take the honour very dutifully to present the same likewise to Your High Honours. The share of foreign nations from India in the shipping to and in this Gulf has been of little or no consequence for upwards of two years. The English did not unload their ship that arrived here from Europe in the past year, on account of the troubles in the empire and the flight of their resident from Kirman, but left it as a prey to the French, into whose hands that vessel fell at the latitude of Bombay. However, on 30 August last they again received a small vessel from there, and discharged from it upwards of 200 small bales, mostly woollens as we understand, in order to re-establish the said trading post at Kirman, having received orders to that effect once again both from Europe and from Bombay, notwithstanding their suffered losses. The captain of the last-arrived ship, named Philip Jodrell, thought fit, immediately upon his arrival, unexpectedly to board the free merchant vessel De Kersenboom, then lying in the roads here and belonging to Mr Joan Karsseboom, Second on behalf of the Honourable Company in Bengal, and at the same time to demand an inspection of its cargo and charters, as well as, instantly before he had carried out this inspection, to strike the Dutch flag flying from it; and all this notwithstanding that not only the Persian Vice-Admiral Molla Alie Shah was also lying in the roads here, but was even opposed to it, testifying that he well knew the ship belonged to the Dutch and not, as was pretended, to the French nation; and seeing that attack, he also sent his men on board to prevent Jodrell from committing any acts of hostility. Concerning this, the English agent Mr Henry Savage was sounded out on the same day, and the answer received was that he regretted the incident and that it had occurred without his knowledge or foreknowledge, but that the captain had orders to inspect all ships, and he could do nothing to counter it. Whereupon we addressed ourselves to the aforementioned Vice-Admiral Molla Alie Shah, sending the interpreter thither to request that he by order exercise authority to ensure that no hostilities were committed in these roads. However, he stated that he had already done so, and demonstrated this further by sending more men on board De Karsseboom, which had already been taken in tow, disarming the English, and having the ship brought close to his own. At this, Captain Jodrell was not a little astonished, but nevertheless had neither the desire nor the power to prevent it. Consequently, being able to accomplish nothing more, he went on board and examined the passport and all letters concerning the cargo; whereupon, noticing his double error, he recalled his men, and the men taken off from it, after having been in possession for upwards of 36 hours, returned thither. However, he took along all letters with addresses written in the French language, but returned the same, all unopened except for one, after a reclamation was made. Regarding these hostilities, the temporary commander, as well as the captain and supercargo Jan Witte Leblanc, have protested jointly yet each separately, copies of which accompany this under No. 26, in the hope that Your High Honours will be pleased to consider the same well done, and to pursue the matter further as shall square with your discerning judgment. Meanwhile, we also enclose herewith a copy written in Persian by the aforementioned naval commander to the first signatory, as proof of his displeasure regarding that incident, and that he by no means approved of it.

From Persia, 1 October 1742. complaint of the temporary Commander and the supercargo in hope of approval but he also took away all letters addressed in the French language, but returned the same after formal reclamation had been made, likewise, except for one, all unopened. Concerning these hostilities, then, the temporary Commander, together with the Captain and supercargo Jan White Leblanc together, yet each separately, protested, so that copies thereof (the annexes under No. 26) accompany this, in the hope that Your High Mightinesses will be pleased to consider the same to have been well done, and further to pursue that matter in such manner as shall square with your penetrating judgment. From find a speedy and profitable market, in view of the fact that it appears that if King Shahrokh, of whom mention was made in our most recent preceding dispatches, continues upon the throne, this so greatly exhausted realm will finally come to catch its breath again, and for which reason it is solely to be wished that his nephew and rival Ibrahim Shah, who seems to have established his seat in Tabriz, and who, like a second Nader Shah, takes away everything he can fleece from the poor community in order to satisfy his soldiery, may soon be removed from the way, and thus leave the peaceful possession of the royal seat to the first mentioned, who, it is maintained, is making strong preparations to go and settle that dispute at the head of a heavy army one of these days, as well as, according to common rumor, having become master of all the considerable treasures left behind by Nader Shah, is very wealthy, greatly encouraging the merchant and 257. Persia, 15 April Anno 1749. received no account thereof, nor entered into any firm contract regarding it. However, as this amounts to little, it appears that we shall have to remit the Honourable Company's cash balance, currently swollen to a sum of po 729652:—. f 218895:12. –, in various sorts of silver Indian rupees circulating here, excluding tottas, by the next opportunity; regarding which we hope that in Souratta, beyond an ordinary slight discount of 2 to 3 percent, no other loss may be incurred, as the surplus charged on the spices will easily make this good on the overall general sale. From Bassora, upon the return of the private small vessel de Karseboom on the 12th of this month, we received a missive dated 6 March past, accompanied by a small chest of gold for Cormandel to the amount, according to the invoice, of f 124120:13:8, which the residents requested us to forward thither by the first convenient and secure opportunity. This matter was maturely deliberated upon today, and for the Honourable Company it was judged most advantageous to leave that capital in the aforementioned bottom, seeing that the same is a good ship and is to steer directly from here to Nagapatnam, in the hope that Your High Excellencies will deign to regard those measures with your honoured approval; while, regarding the unfavourable news from that quarter, we most respectfully request permission to refer to the annexed copies, both of the resident's aforementioned missive and of one received two days later. From Persia, the 6th of January, Year 1749. the new monarch, Tjarog Tjah, who is from his mother's side of the family of the old kings or Sophis, has already been poisoned up to four times, but through the vigor of his youth, being as yet only twelve years of age, he is said to have escaped the danger each time. Nevertheless, most opinions tend toward the view that, having become master of all the considerable treasures left behind by Nader Shah, he will successfully maintain the crown, and with the help of two dukes assigned to him, namely Hassan Khan and Jaffer Khan, will properly uphold his royal authority; and which is then also to be wished for the restoration of peace in this entirely overturned empire. Mirza Abutaleb, on the 30th of the past month, and on that occasion through the interpreters no small displeasure and arrogance was perceived over both Chiefs remaining at home, and the silence of the artillery, even to the extent that after his entry into this town he had taken the audacity to de facto convene an assembly, and to propose therein to take our Lodge by surprise if possible, pretending to excuse the English because on that day they were not at home but had kept their residence in Naiband, which intention, however, upon the remonstrance of the sub-admiral Molla Ali Shah and the frank testimony of the Agent of the English nation, Mr. Henry Savage, that he as well as we had given orders not to discharge any artillery, since such was not customary for the reception of a simple Governor, and that distinction was only required upon the arrival of a Generalissimo or Beglerbegi, 303.
