From Souratta dated 2 May 1749 The Storekeeper Brandijn Rijser also submits a memorandum of the quantities of pound-goods which he, according to the regulations of 8 December 1746, would be allowed to deduct for his benefit for the permitted short weights on the weighed-out merchandise during the expired financial year 1748. Which, having been signed by the Cashier before confrontation and verification of the calculation, was now casually examined, and thereupon it was resolved to pay him the amount of the extracted pounds from the purchase price, after deduction of what the discovered short weights will amount to, with a deduction of 3 percent rebate and 1½ percent brokerage, and to incorporate the memorandum into this record. From Suratte under date 25 May 1749 to serve that the following remarks have fallen upon it. Firstly, regarding the specification of the washing, drying, and salvaging of the linens, etc. 6 5/8 rop: for coolie wages to bring the salvaged baggage of Commander de Wilde from a fishing vessel to the Lodge; whether the Honorable Company or the said Commander de Wilde is obliged to bear these costs, I shall leave deferred to the judgment of Your Honorable Worships, as well as: whether it would not have been more consistent with the interest of the Honorable Company if the factor had our own native sailors, who enjoyed wages and board, unload the 808 corges of salvaged linens from the vessels and bring them ashore, instead of having this done by expressly hired coolies and paying an extra ro/a 19 for it; also: whether the two expressly hired vessels to bring the said goods to a sandbank for drying, and paying rop: 3 for that, could not well have been saved if the fishing vessels already in service had been used for that purpose. Also paid for transferring the said goods to the warehouses after they were dried was the sum of ro/a 38 ¾; whether this expenditure could not likewise have been saved through the use, as mentioned, of our own people, I shall respectfully leave deferred to the wiser judgment of Your Honorable Worships. We could not well have our sailors, who enjoyed their own wages and board, unload the 808 corges of salvaged linens from the vessels, because those people, as well as the few Europeans sent, were stationed all around on guard duty to prevent all theft; and secondly, respectfully said, by putting those people to work too much time would have elapsed, and the goods that were already starting to ferment in the vessels would have been completely ruined if one had dawdled somewhat with them. In the 6 1/8 coolie wages to be charged by the incoming factors for the salvaged baggage of de Wilde are also included some small goods that he salvaged for the Honorable Company from the ship Nieuwalcheren. One certainly had to proceed to hiring vessels to bring the goods to the sandbank for drying, because the fishermen would not even lend their proas for it. The transferring of the goods after they were dried could likewise not possibly be left to our own people, because they were stationed as sentries around the area and in the streets through which the linens were carried past by coolies; and moreover, we can testify in good conscience to Your Honorable Worships that: they would have needed at least 5 days for it, and then in the meantime many goods would certainly have been carried away by the high water, as well as ruined by the heavy rain. Our sailors did lend a hand in salvaging the cordage, copper plates, sails, etc., but due to their weakness one was forced to hire special coolies, for otherwise, respectfully speaking, it would have been impossible to manage with the recorded ro/a 28 ¼ for so many goods. Regarding the alongside-mentioned error, we beg the humble pardon of Your Honorable Worships, and the same is now redressed in the accompanying specification. The factors bring into their specification a hired sedan chair for the chief mate de Rode, for transport to Suratte, paid ro/a 12, because the same was unable to make use of the road due to an injury sustained to his leg. To the alongside entry we can give no other answer than that we submit ourselves completely to the decision to be taken by Your Honorable Worships in that regard. The ro/a 12 for the sedan chair of the chief mate Roode, contracted for 6 kahars because he had an accident with his leg, is actual, as it could not be negotiated for less. The cordage, sails, copper plates, cannon shot, etc., which have all the qualities to be handled by the sailors, were likewise transferred to the warehouses by expressly hired people at a cost of rop:s 18 ¼. In the transfer of the said specification, 242 3/8 is counted, and in lb it is only 242 23/32, thus 1/32 too much is counted on the sum of 273 ¾, which will have to be redressed. In the specification of board and travel money provided to the crew members etc. who were present there, the slaves are listed for 6 pice per day for food, and another ¾ rop: travel money for each on their departure to Suratte; regarding which the question is whether these expenses ought not to be left off the specification and remain at the expense of the owners; but for whose account the expense for the passengers should fall, I leave deferred to the approval of Your Honorable Worships.
