81 From Java's East Coast, 21 February Anno 1751 having only been able to give an uncertain report in our respectful letter of the 19th of this month, but now, through the arrival of Major Weerman and Sea Captain Hoen, being further informed of the sad loss thereof, we annex for Your Right Honourables an account and declaration of Sea Captain t Hoen and Major Weerman regarding its loss, of which a further declaration by the Captain is to be prepared upon the appearance of the other superior and petty officers, as the Captain finds it difficult to state everything definitively, since he was able to save neither journal nor chart, much less any other goods, and the latter are not at hand here. And since no word or sign has yet been heard of the remaining people, we have resolved, subject to your kind interpretation, to dispatch another pantjallang with provisions from here, with and alongside the accompanying order to the quartermaster of both pantjallangs, Despion and the Hartlooper, to whose assistance we have also added the boatswain from here, who is fully familiar with the island of Crimon Java. Furthermore, as the ship Eijndhoeff is still loading at Joana, and the resident from there reports that the Sassem beams he has on hand cannot be loaded, regarding which the necessary order will be given momentarily, there will also apparently still be an opportunity to have Major Weerman and the military personnel under him proceed on that vessel to Macassar, for which the Major has made an urgent request, all of which we hope will be in accordance with Your Right Honourables' intentions and may merit your favorable approval. We hope that the vessels that have been dispatched from both the east and the west will still rescue the two persons left behind, who, as is written, did not dare to go along out of fear, as the launch contained fully 120 persons. But regarding the compensation for the loss that the Honorable Company suffered in the cargo of the [goods] most recently shipped from here by my predecessor, I hope that His Honor, on account of his presence there, will already have accounted for himself to Your High Noble Greatness, to whom I very reverently express my gratitude for the forwarding of the aforementioned samples, as I find myself thereby enabled to proceed with security in having the same sorted. I shall also not fail to keep in observance that in the future no passes or permits shall be made known concerning the yield, nor in calculating the percentages to take any fractions more or less than ¾, ½, and ¼, provided that such paper be duly signed by me. On the 3rd current I had the honor to write to Your High Noble High Mightinesses for the last time by the pantjallang de Fortuijn, which was here in passing from Samarang; and on the 11th thereafter returned here the Chinese Que Tiko, who, in compliance with Your High Noble High Mightinesses' well-respected order, on the 11th of March last set out on the voyage to the Capital in the company of his fellow Chinese From Cheribon, the 10th of April Anno 1750. Chinese Limoako and Qui Tjamko, by a native vessel manned with eight Javanese along with my humble letter of that date, as Your High Noble High Mightinesses will have already observed from the duplicate thereof subsequently sent on the 19th thereafter by the ship Geldermalsen; who had the misfortune, two days after the date, at the latitude of Indramaijo, to become surrounded during a calm in the morning at 7 o'clock by 13 pirate vessels, both large and small, and after a fight of about 6 hours, could no longer defend themselves against their superior force, owing to the death of the Javanese steersman and the wounding of the aforementioned Limoako as well as three other Javanese; was taken prisoner, and after having wandered back and forth with those pirates for 28 days, finally, through begging and pleading— because the Chinese nation is of too little value at Johor, as each head could fetch only 2 to 3 Spanish rixdollars at best—on the 10th instant off the river of Indramaijo was released again and set ashore, along with his two aforementioned countrymen, as more fully mentioned in the report made by them, 25 From Cheribon, the 10th of April Anno 1750. dated the 13th instant, accompanying this in copy; from which Your High Noble High Mightinesses will further observe that the Cheribon burgher Jan Benedict Vos, who departed for the Capital on the 27th of February last in a pamaijang with 6 Javanese, as well as a European from Samarang known by the name of Smit, sent by the Governor Hohendorff for the delivery of letters, having fallen into the bloodthirsty hands of the pirates before the deponents, were slain and thrown into the sea; and moreover that they had already captured over 60 Javanese from eight captured vessels, both from here, Samarang, and other places on this coast. Furthermore, that the said pirates, with the onset of the east winds, were about to return to Johor, which is to be wished for the peace of mind of the small traders. The aforementioned Que Tiko will undertake the voyage again at the first suitable opportunity to Your High Noble High Mightinesses, to whom I also have the honor to communicate that on the 11th current the shahbandar of Indramaijo, Tan Janko, passed away, and therefore it was deemed not unserviceable, in order to keep the Company free from damage— From Cheribon, the 18th of April Anno 1750. the more so as at the end of this month the second term of the lease money must be paid in advance—to have the said toll administered, until Your High Noble High Mightinesses' further disposal, by the former shahbandar Ian Keeko and the outpost sergeant Anthonij de Rijke, while keeping a neat record, since the revenues thereof during this month still belong to the estate of Tan Janko on account of the first term having been satisfied in its time. Meanwhile, I do not doubt in the least that this lease, in this time when navigation opens again, upon a further auction, will render quite as much as it amounted to recently, namely 1,572 Spanish rixdollars, or 1,965 Dutch rixdollars per year.
