As the opportunity presents itself, I cannot fail in my duty to communicate that on the 23rd of August 1749, together with the ship Nieuw Vijvervreugt in company with the ship De Anna, we set sail from the Rammekens roads, and arrived at Sint Iago on the 10th of October, whence we departed again on the 16th of the same month. On the 11th of January 1750 we arrived safely at the roads of the Cape of Good Hope, and setting sail from there on the 13th of February, we subsequently arrived safely at anchor in the Sunda Strait on the 8th of May, having had 11 dead and 41 sick. And since I am unable to recompense the Lord Governor-General for such, I hope that the all-sufficient God may be pleased to pour out His blessings upon His High Excellency's precious person, just as sister Paduka Seri Ratu Sultan unceasingly prays to the God of the whole universe, in Whom sister, first of all, and then the Lord Governor-General, places her hope and trust; namely, that the kindnesses and assistance which continue to be brought successively to the kingdom of Bantam may become clear as day to the inhabitants of Bantam, so that they live in quiet rest and peace and may further continue in that condition until future generations through the protection of the Lord Governor-General. Since a letter has just been received here from the ship Kievitsheuvel arriving from the Netherlands, commanded by Skipper Jochem Beek, serving to notify that having sailed from Texel on 31 December of the past year in company with the ships D' Admiraal de Ruijter, Captain Verdoes; Amstelveen, Skipper Lauwrier to Ceylon; Immagonda, Skipper Visser; 't Fortuijn, Skipper Woud; and Straalen, Skipper Trappel, it arrived at the Cape on 1 April of this year, and on the 16th thereafter, when none of the above-mentioned ships except Straalen had yet arrived there, sailed again from that place, together with the ships Vosmaar, De Bevalligheijt, and the aforementioned Straalen, subsequently having entered the Strait on the 8th of this month, and having hailed the ship Knaapenhoff from Ceylon on the 11th close to Anjer; I therefore considered it my duty to impart the above to Your Right Honours as expeditiously as possible, as is done hereby in all deference. I consider myself greatly obliged to communicate hereby to Your High Noble High Born that, praise be to God, I have arrived in the Sunda Strait with the Honorable East India Company ship De Bevalligheid for the Chamber of Delft on the 18th of June of this year 1750, having sailed with the said vessel from Goeree on the 23rd of November of the year 1749 with 259 seafaring and military personnel, and arrived at the roads of Cabo de Goede Hoop on the 31st of March 1750, and sailed from the said roads of Cabo de Goede Hoop on the 16th of April 1750, together with the three aftermentioned Honorable East India Company ships: the Honorable Company ship Kievitsheuvel for the Chamber of Amsterdam, the Honorable Company ship Vosmaar for the Chamber of Zeeland, and the Honorable Company ship Stralen for the Chamber of Enkhuizen. I also tried for a full twenty-four hours to round outside Madura, but as soon as I came to the point of Arosbaya, we found there that the currents run even much stronger to the west, as well as heavy seas from the east, which caused me to drift broadside down, so that, in order not to prolong the voyage any further, we immediately set our course inward, and today am under sail again to proceed with our voyage, and shall not fail to do my best, to Your High Noble Born's satisfaction, with the help of the Almighty, to complete my voyage as swiftly as is feasible, for which I shall not neglect an hour nor a moment day and night, and hope through my diligence and good conduct to further recommend myself to Your High Noble Born's favor. As for what further concerns the state of my vessel, it is very well up to this day; I have had no deaths yet, and also no sick of significance. The hull is also still tight and sound, but we found the mainmast in the hold to be full of white ants. Honorable, wise and very discreet Gentlemen, My Lords, As we, with the ship named Stralen, which sailed out for the Chamber of Enkhuizen, have, thank God, arrived safely in the Sunda Strait on Wednesday the 24th of June in the year 1750, we deem it our utmost duty to communicate this our fortunate arrival to His High Nobility as well as the Noble Gentlemen Councilors of the Netherlands Indies. After our departure from the Cape of Good Hope on the 16th of April of this year, we have had 9 deaths. On the last day of December of the previous year, we sailed out to sea from Texel with our 6 ships, namely the Admiraal de Ruijter, Amstelveen, the Immagonda, Straelen, 't Fortuijn and Kivitsheuvel, the latter of which we found on the roadstead of the Cape of Good Hope on the first of April of this year; and we departed from there again on the 16th of April with our 4 ships, to wit: the Zeeland ship Vosmaar, the Delft ship de Bevalligheijt, the Amsterdam Kivitsheuvel and the Enkhuizen Straalen, wishing shortly to have the good fortune of delivering an oral report to His High Nobility and the further Councilors. Right Honorable, Highborn, Wide-ruling Lord and Honorable Lords, This letter is directed in all reverence to accompany the adjoining copy of the letter brought here from Lanpong Tulang Bawang, as well as dutifully to inform Your Right Honorables that in two days we intend to send thither by a native vessel belonging there one corporal and six common soldiers for reinforcement, together with seven hundred pounds of gunpowder, as well as rice and some other necessities as may conveniently be stowed in it. And we have furthermore seen fit respectfully to propose to Your Right Honorables that we consider it would be very good to send thither Ensign Jan Andries Bane, who is very well known there, as he has previously served here as corporal and sergeant for six years, and who thus, in case of an unexpected breach, could contribute much to keep those people in check. Wherefore, if Your Right Honorables should agree with us in this, we respectfully request to be furnished as soon as possible with Your highly respected orders concerning the same. And since it appears to us, both from the resident's writings and from private reports, that Raden Tjaora Nagara has a hand in all those underhanded tricks, and would gladly see the Company suffer defeat there, to which end he seems more and more to sharpen his wits, which are very shrewd, he being a Peranakan Chinese, we are, under wiser judgment, of the opinion that it would be very good if Your Right Honorables would please order the Queen to remove that cunning minister from there. 139 From Bantam The 19th of November Anno 1750 Translation of a Malay letter written in Javanese characters by bagoes goenang moenara, to father the Commander, received at Batavia the 19th of November Anno 1750: I, bagas gonang moenara, send my humble respectful greeting to father the Commander, with an earnest request to father the Commander that all the female persons who are lodged in the Castle under the protection of datoe (by which the Queen is possibly meant) may be protected, as I, bagoes moenara, have come to hear that pangerang ratoe (actually the Crown Prince) intends to have them all put to death together; therefore I very humbly request father the Commander that the said female persons may not only be admitted, but at the same time may be maintained by Your Honour; and in case Your Honour does not please to support them, I request that they may be sent to the bazaar called serang, considering it is known to me that the aforementioned female persons have done no evil. This high and mighty letter was sealed under a heavy red seal, and delivered into the hands of the emissaries named Radheen wira nagara and Ingabehie dita narbaija, by the paduca Sultan siri Ratoe zulthaan, possessor of the royal throne and lordship of Bantam, alongside pangerang Paktoe, to the Lord Governor-General Gustaaff Willem Baron van Imhoff 141 From Bantam The 14th of November Anno 1750: and the Council of the Indies, wishing them long life, etc. etc. Further, sister padoeka siri Ratoe zulthaan communicates that she has received the high and mighty letter recently sent to her from the hands of the Commander George Tammo Falck, together with the commissioners, in safety and with the customary state. They further notify that padoeca siri ratoe Zulthaan has already summoned Radien Tjacra nagara from Lampong Toulang Bawang to Bantam, on which commission thither were Her Highness's commissioners, together with a commissioned capable man of the Honourable Company named Jan Andries Bene; after which transaction padoeca sirie ratoe Tulsthaan has chosen two qualified persons from among the Bantam pangerans, named tommongong Djaija Sadana and tommongong Saraija Doeta, to succeed in place of Radien tjacrana gara, who were also presented to the Commander; who thereupon also approved that the said tommongongs, together with the commissioned capable man, be dispatched immediately with a vessel to Lampong Toulang From Bantam The 14th of November Anno 1750 Toulang Bauwang. Regarding the matters concerning Lampong Toulang Bauwang, the said Queen Sultan testifies that she places her hope and trust, both by day and by night, in no one else than the Lord Governor (as matters concerning this are known to His High Mightiness), whom she solely regards as her father and mother; wherefore padoeca siri ratoe Sulthaan also remains grateful to the Lord Governor-General for his good reminder and virtuous admonitions, which are made known in the letter recently written to her by His High Mightiness. Lastly, she has nothing else to offer by this, as a token of sincere affection springing from a pure heart, than merely 30 bahars of white and 20 bahars of black pepper. The petition of the grandfather (or grandmother) of Bagus moenara to the Commander: I request that all the women who are there in the Castle of the Ratoe may be released, since the lord Bagus moenara has understood that they will all be put to death by the pangerang Ratoe (or Crown Prince); wherefore I request that you help them to freedom, and after their release, please take their side; and if Your Honour does not please to do so, send them to the bazaar of Serang, for their good conduct is known to Your Honour; but if they lose a father, it is unknown to Your Honour, but solely their good conduct toward Your Honour's person. The skipper Ian de wit, who by Your High Excellencies' good care was assigned to us for help, was found dead in his bed on the morning of the 6th of this month; while the Lieutenant van Rijn, as well as the chief mate and third mate, are all very ill, so that I have not the slightest service from them either; wherefore I request Your High Excellencies for a good and capable chief mate who is able, in the event of further unexpected deaths, to take care of the Company's precious vessel.
