The ship Meervlied anchored here in the outer roadstead on the 7th instant, and its officer informed me that he had received 1500 bundles of coir at Batavia to deliver at the island of Edam, but because he had a good and favorable wind at that time to sail on towards this place, he took advantage of it and therefore now requested to be discharged of the said coir, which was also done that night, and as such directly again to... 300 pieces 5

According to the enclosed bill of lading, the ship Meervlied has also immediately sailed from here to Wallerie in order to load the planned timber there. Furthermore, I have the honor to communicate to Your High Excellencies that on the 31st of May five vessels arrived here in the roads with the Butonese envoys coming from a Costi, provided with passes by Your High Excellencies in order to return to their country. They have already been at sea for 20 days, as a result of which they lacked everything and their vessels were entirely disabled; and because they see that the east winds are growing stronger from day to day, the said envoys have requested that an empty place might be granted to them to maintain their residence here for some time until their vessels, which are extraordinarily leaky, can be properly repaired, which I finally had to grant them after persistent urging, and I have given them an empty place on the beach in the hope that Your High Excellencies will be pleased to take favorable satisfaction in this action of mine; and since they are royal envoys, I did not dare to refuse such a request. The ship Tolsduijn now serves, under God's guidance, to convey these very humble and respectful letters to Your High Excellencies. The ship Haarlem, which has taken in fifty-two coyangs and six picols of salt here as its ballast layer in order to subsequently receive a cargo of rice on top of it at Paccalongan, we return to your High Excellencies via the aforementioned place under escort of this most submissive and humble letter, and we take the liberty on said vessel, also in compliance with the highly venerated order, to send in civil arrest to your High Excellencies Major Faure along with the documents to his charge, together with the rebuttal submitted thereon and the subsequent report received from the officers; and whereas the aforementioned papers contain the entire tangled affair in its full context, we shall not detain your High Excellencies with a tedious account of that very unpleasant matter presented therein; and meanwhile, as the aforementioned Major has also been discharged of his sidearm upon his arrest as a sign of the deprivation of his command over the Corps of Dragoons, we take the liberty of sending the same under the escort of Captain-Lieutenant Louwers to your High Excellencies. On the 21st of this month, the ship Haarlem arrived in the roads here from the head office at Samarang, which according to the orders of the Honorable, highly Respected Lord Governor and Council there was only to be loaded with rice; but because the ships Giesenburg and Ruijskensteijn were already lying here taking in cargo, I could do nothing else to dispatch the said vessel quickly again than to give it as cargo: 120 pieces of beams, length 20 feet, thickness 12 inches 200 pieces of swalpen, length 10 feet, thickness 2 to 3 inches, width 8 to 9 inches, and 545 picols of powder sugar, which together with its charges amount to a sum of f 6011, as appears from the enclosed bill of lading and invoice. The oft-mentioned vessel could well have taken in 150 lasts of rice on top of that, but its Captain-Lieutenant indicated that he dared not take this upon himself, because he found that his vessel, now that it began to settle, leaked heavily, and therefore he feared that if it were laden deeper, its cargo would run the risk of ruin. From Java's East Coast, 16 September 1751: our humble gratitude to Your Right Excellencies in particular for this, and we hope that henceforth, now that this gracious arrangement removes all obstacles, expectations, and jealousy, as well as illicit trade, from, to, and including the collection of that grain, and thus the sale right here at the Coast, Your Right Excellencies will be able to derive more and more satisfaction. This will always be our foremost endeavor, and also that Your Right Excellencies' most respected orders, issued on this highly important point, will be faithfully carried out to the letter, setting aside all self-seeking actions and frauds. Therefore, not only has all that is necessary been immediately written by us to the Sourabaya administration and the regents from those districts, but the same and all the residents of the rice-supplying offices have also been most emphatically enjoined, with the repetition of Your Right Excellencies' enacted order, to take all care for this collection, abandoning all personal interests and perspectives, under pain of Your Right Excellencies' highest indignation. This severe threat thus makes us expect and anticipate the faithful and literal observance not only of Your Right Excellencies' highly revered aforesaid order, but also of all others granted to us by Your Right Excellencies, both in the revered instruction and in other circular letters, the revered contents of which we have made known, by sending extract copies, to everyone whom it in any way concerns. We have likewise made known Your Right Excellencies' favorable disposition regarding the timber rafts and the exemption of the residents from reimbursing those that were lost, expressing to Your Right Excellencies in the name of those servants our most humble thanks for this great favor shown to them; also for the favorable purchase made of the Government property here in town, as well as the resident's dwelling at Rembang. And we shall not fail to let Your Right Excellencies' dispositions regarding both matters serve as our bounden guide, and to make them a permanent order. With regard to the subordinate offices, where a desired peace is everywhere enjoyed, and where people are busy harvesting the crop, which promises a rich yield this year, although that necessary work is for the present considerably impeded and held back by the heavy rains that still continuously persist, we have nothing else worthy of attention to report to Your Right Excellencies, except that we have likewise issued the necessary orders at all places for the purchase of sugar in accordance with Your Right Excellencies' revered command. We have written to Rembang to send the sloop, which is to be made ready for Chormandel this year, thither via Malacca on 1 October; also one of the Tanjong Pouras to Malacca, and a ditto for Batavia to Your Right Excellencies, as well as the vessels for Macassar, Banda, and Ternate to those places in January next; and furthermore to give the Batavia sloops half a foot more depth and thus a hold height of 10½ feet; also to give the Tanjongpoeras for Malacca six feet of depth of hold up to the main wales; then to lay down on the stocks a small ship of 100 feet from stem to stern, 29 feet wide, and 15 feet deep for Batavia according to the suitable design after the bark E; item a pantjalang like Overmaas, 29 feet long, 20 feet wide, with a continuous deck without bulkheads but with a suitable gunwale forward and gun ports to be able to place small cannon on carriages, with Dutch rigging and rudder, and to send that vessel next June directly from Rembang to Padang, all in conformity with Your Right Excellencies' revered order contained in a most respected letter of the 20th past and our resolution recorded here on the 8th of this month. We have the honor to present the latter herewith in all reverence to Your Right Excellencies, together with and alongside those of the 1st, 13th, and 15th of this month, as well as the 27th past, the last-mentioned containing fully and in detail our deliberations held on Your Right Excellencies' revered instruction; and furthermore also that on that day we had decided to send, of the ships Haarlem and Lijchochton, the first-named upon unloading to Pacalongang and the second to Tagal to take in a cargo of rice each, a good stock of which grain was already lying at those two aforesaid places, and to which end the first-mentioned vessel was also dispatched thither on the 15th of this month. From Java's East Coast, 16 September 1751. to send to Qualadamak, after having previously, under Your High Nobilities' favorable approval, unloaded here its home country ballast, consisting of a little iron, forge coals, and large bricks, as well as from Haarlem, which contained only coast bricks; the iron and forge coals for a necessary use by the administration, and the coast bricks and large bricks for the service of the fortification works around the city, to whose completion, or rather the construction of a parapet on the ring wall masonry built some years ago, we have had to proceed in the hope of Your High Nobilities' favorable approval, because the aforesaid ring wall was already beginning to suffer severely from the rains and to decay, indeed running the risk of completely collapsing in the upcoming bad monsoon. For such necessary reasons we were also forced to proceed with the rebuilding of the large drawbridge washed away some time ago by a heavy deluge, and two others over the moats running around the city wall, since one could almost no longer leave the city in safety and get outside the gates.
