From Java's East Coast the 25th of March 1732. whether the Regent of that land ought not initially to accept 60 picols annually at 5 rixdollars each, solely for the purpose of not rendering the aforementioned contract immediately void and invalid, since otherwise this alteration could give rise to nothing but evasions concerning the further deliveries to be made. Meanwhile, we shall allow no opportunities to slip by to turn the dye meerap to the greatest profit, which Your High Noble Excellencies sent to us for testing alongside your highly esteemed circular missive of the 26th of October past, by offering it for sale to the Chinese and other merchants in order thus to discover the demand for the aforementioned dyestuff and how much of it might be sold annually, of which we shall also make a trial at the first auction to be held, so that thereafter we can supply Your High Noble Excellencies with the dutiful report regarding the outcome, just as we hope shortly to be able to do concerning the insects, minerals, etcetera, that might be found along this coast for the academy at Leyden. We have already ordered the chief surgeon of the Company's hospital here, as well as the respective heads and residents along with their surgeons at the subordinate stations, to send hither at the earliest opportunity whatever they may have collected and also to give reasons why they have hitherto neglected to do so, according to the order given to them by extract of our resolution of the 30th of August and by circular letter of the 7th of September in the year 1750. Meanwhile, we shall observe, and use as a guide for ourselves and all subordinates, Your High Noble Excellencies' revered orders mentioned by extract resolution of the 22nd of April, 27th of August, 7th and 14th of September, and 16th of October under the 31st of December of the past year, concerning the selling of lead and iron for no lower price than 14 and 13 florins per hundred pounds; the diligence in dispatching the native pay records; likewise that no oils of the four main spices are to be sold at public auctions; the laying aside of sidearms by persons appearing before the judicial court; and the abolition or continuation of the method whereby the military captains keep books of the retained monthly pay to cover uniform expenses. Since the former was deemed preferable by us over the latter, we have ordered the captains and other military officers to close their Company's books by the end of the upcoming month of April and to send hither under seal the remaining monies, the undersigned undertaking to demonstrate how the costs of the uniforms can be covered with greater economy and less complication. Furthermore, concerning the weighing or quantities of personal baggage that must be placed on the scale at one time, and not to grant the messmasters any higher wage than 24 florins per month. Regarding the liberal gift or the levy of the 50th penny of everyone's possessions for the benefit of the country, immediately upon receipt of Your High Noble Excellencies' revered circular order and the annexed attachments, we appointed at the session of the 15th instant, as commissioners of the receipt, six Company servants and three burghers, namely: The junior merchants Pieter Blaquire and Daniel van Pembroek, as well as the surgeon-major Casper Christoffer Jahn, the chief surgeon of the Company's hospital Gerrit Willem Meijer, and the junior merchant Christiaan Mente, the captain of the burgher cavalry Hans Jurgen Christoffels, the town printer Doctor Fredrig Slabig, and the burgher Marten Boe, who, three at a time—namely two from the Company's servants and one from the burghers—shall serve in the council chamber within the Company's prison, which was deemed the most suitable place for this purpose. It was agreed on the same day to employ them to begin the collection of the first term from the middle of the upcoming month of April until the 15th of June, the second term until the 15th of July, the third term from the 15th of August to the 15th of September, and the fourth term from the 15th of October to the 15th of November, from eight o'clock in the morning until eleven o'clock at noon, and from three o'clock in the afternoon until five o'clock in the evening, or until sunset. This was duly published and posted for the community on the 16th past, on which day the placard issued by Your High Noble Excellencies on the 20th of December of the past year was published, alongside the explanation of the introduction and the first article of the aforementioned placard: that widows and estate administrators, as well as other known heirs of Europeans, even if not themselves of European blood, shall also contribute to the liberal gift, and likewise the legatees in so far as it concerns the amount of the legacies or that which they received.

Capital of the Poor what they still hold as a remaining balance thereof; and that among the bookkeepers, under-steersmen, and lesser servants of the administration, commerce, and marine; as well as those of the militia, artillery, trades, and other professions of similar rank who are exempted from paying the Liberal Gift, shall not be understood those who are appointed to the residencies of sub-offices or other accountable positions, or who possess more than one thousand rijksdaalders, as has been made known by the edict which we have the honor to present herewith to Your Noble Excellencies; and both of which have also been dispatched to the sub-offices to be published and affixed there as well, except in Surakarta, where its publication throughout was deemed no further expedient, on account of the private interests of the Court, than in the Dutch quarter alone, with orders to the chief officer there and all other chiefs and residents to appear in person alongside other servants and residents at the aforesaid time and place to make the aforesaid Liberal Gift, or else to send hither someone else furnished with a special power of attorney to take the oath upon their souls and subsequently make the gift thereupon. And so that the Commissioners might verify whether or not all contributors have appeared before them, the court messenger there, and likewise here, has been instructed to have an accurate list drawn up containing the first and last names of all European inhabitants and residents, indicating whether they are married and have a child or children or not, which we trust will merit Your Noble Excellencies' approval. On the other hand, the funds of the poor, according to the submitted financial statement of the overseers, have increased to rd:s 12428: 29: 3. State of the Orphanage Having at present nothing to note regarding mercantile affairs, we shall, turning to domestic affairs, have the honor to report respectfully that on the 15th of this month the overseers of the orphans, according to annual custom, submitted to us the report concerning the condition of the orphanage, from which it appears that at the closing of the books at the end of February of this year, after deducting all charges amounting to the sum of 3116: 36 Rijxdaalders, it stood at no more than rd:s 1321: 38:—, or that the entire capital amounted to merely rd:s 4438: 16:—. From Java's East Coast, 25 March 1752. The aforesaid house taken over for reasons since the end of February of the past year, when they amounted to rd:s 12202: 44: 11. However, because these latter increase annually and the former have decreased to such an extent that the regents found themselves unable to pay out to their pupil, Cornelis van Doorn, his share, we—considering that in the orphanage there were now no more than three children who had practically reached their majority and were also soon to leave—have been compelled to come to the decision to take over the orphanage, in which the poor children are also raised at the expense of the poor fund, for what it cost at its purchase in the year 1748, and to have the money, to the amount of 1400 rd:s, paid out by the overseers of the poor to those of the orphans. State of the Home for the Aged and Estate Masters According to the financial statement submitted by the junior merchant and outside regent Pieter Blaquire, after deducting rd:s 252: 28 which he still held in cash at the end of last January, the Home for the Aged was still in arrears for borrowed Company funds to the amount of rd:s 11747: 24:—. On the other hand, the state of the Estate Masters appears more favorable than in the past year, when the funds of that Chamber amounted to Rd:s 9520: 9:—, and now, by contrast, [illegible] 183: 12: 8, as can be seen in greater detail, if Your Noble Excellencies please, in the financial statements inserted into our Resolution of the 15th of this month; which decree, along with that of the 1st, I have the honor to present herewith to Your Noble Excellencies, the latter mentioning that, according to the statement submitted by the administrators of all the Company's profits and revenues relating to the Means of Subsistence, this gratuity graciously granted by Your Noble Excellencies by letter of 8 January 1747, which in three years, calculated from the end of January 1749 to the end of January 1752, yielded a sum of rd:s 30179: 6:—, has been distributed among the clerical servants. [illegible] to return with Hartenlust, of the cargoes and arrival of the two last-mentioned, pending requisitions for Amboina [illegible] to obtain, we have, under Your Right Excellencies' favorable approval, made that change regarding this matter, and dispatched that vessel—after Elswout had been loaded at this office with some unsuitable goods, mentioned in the attached invoice—thither to take in a cargo of rice and other products. This was done not only because the warehouses there were abundantly provided with them, but also because the ministers were sorely at a loss for ships; whereas, on the contrary, all the rice and products stored there from Tagal and Paccalongang could be carried away by the ship Giessenburg, as well as all the sugar from Japara and the remainder of the rice from here by the Erffprins. In consequence of which, the first-mentioned vessel having also been dispatched thither at once, and the latter, which is busy taking in the remainder of its cargo of rice, is shortly to return to Your Right Excellencies together with and alongside the ships Hartenlust and 's Heeren Arendskerke. These are laden at Joana and at Qualladamak as Your Right Excellencies will ascertain from the enclosed copy invoice. Both cargoes amount to a sum of ƒ5087:16 and the expenses of the provisions supplied to ƒ1170:8:—. For the writing off of which we respectfully request Your Right Excellencies' favorable authorization, as well as for the writing off of a further ƒ913:15:8:—; this amount representing that which was laden in the past year for the province of Amboina on the bark De Spreeuw at Rembang and Joana, and the provisions supplied to that vessel according to the bill of lading, invoices, and expense accounts transmitted to Your Right Excellencies. Among these, that of the 29th of March mentions, among other things, that upon the report of express commissioners on that day we were obliged to resolve to grant orders and qualification for the repair of the boundary wall around the lodge at Grissee, which had collapsed to a width of 20 and a height of 9 feet, and to order the Commandant of Passarouang to write off each month no more than 25 lb. of gunpowder instead of 100 lb.; and, as it appeared to us from the statements sent in by all the residents that at Grissee in the last three years no more than 190 lasts of rice had been sold to private individuals, to recommend emphatically to the joint residents to pay greater attention to that important item in the future and to mention it monthly in their statements of balances. 61 From Java's East Coast, the 10th of May 1752. Notwithstanding that, pursuant to my most recent humble letters of the 9th of this month, in compliance with your Excellencies' highly respected orders, I have already sent the pantjallang present here out to sea on the 12th thereafter, the brutalities of the pirates go so far that they have not only attacked different vessels navigating hither from Batavia and killed some people sailing thereon, as well as carried off various fishing vessels with a number of 21 souls between here and Indramayu, but also according to the report of a mate with two sailors from the galliot De Windhond, who arrived here overland on the 16th at eight o'clock in the evening—which galliot, because practically all the people on board lay helpless due to sickness, or at least were in no condition to continue the voyage to Banda, had been lying opposite the corner of Gebang, whose commander had sent these three men hither at sunrise the day before to request a surgeon and refreshments, so as to be able to continue their voyage again from here after such refreshment—the pirates did not shrink from seizing these three people after they had rowed about half a mile away with the boat of their aforementioned vessel, stripping them naked, and after having compelled them, under the infliction of various insults and with the kris, pike, and pistol at their breast, to give up the strength of the aforementioned De Windhond, both in arms and crew, casting them into a leaky sampan of theirs full of water, and thus leaving them to drift without any implements to reach shore; notwithstanding which, after they had thus been abandoned by that murderous scum and had bailed out that vessel empty with their hands and a gunny sack found on its bottom under water, as well as having plugged the holes as much as possible with the stones also found therein, they nevertheless reached the shore the following day around three o'clock in the afternoon, and thus arrived here around eight o'clock in the evening, with the further notice that they had still seen the pirates roving that morning, being the 16th of this month, and had seen one of them bear down upon the galliot De Windhond under the guise of a fisherman, for which reason they feared that, due to the helplessness of the people on board, it had already been overpowered by those scoundrels; wherefore I find myself exceedingly obliged to report this to your Excellency in all humility by these presents, as well as that I immediately thereupon requisitioned two sufficient vessels belonging to the Palembangers lying in the roadstead and two sturdy mayangs of the Cheribon people, and after I had armed them instantly as much as possible, I sent them thither with the aforementioned three men to point out the place where De Windhond was to be sought, with orders to look for it and, if it had not yet been captured by that scum, to have it brought hither for the preservation, as far as possible, of the vessel, cargo, and the souls on board, and if it were already in the power of the pirates, to make every possible effort to recapture it; but they having returned today with two empty and dismasted fishing vessels found drifting, without having been able to discover the least trace of the aforementioned vessel, and having also received word in passing from Tegal that it has likewise not been seen anywhere around there to date, I have, in the hope of your approval, agreed to the request made to me by the Tommongongs to dispatch a native flotilla against that mob under the command of the already cruising pantjallang, in order to seek them out while cruising between Pamanukan and Gebang, to inflict all possible damage upon them, and if possible to recapture this mentioned Company's vessel, which flotilla shall consist of two Chinese sloops, one of that nation from here and the other belonging to those residing at Indramayu, and six smaller Cheribon native vessels manned mostly with all volunteer Chinese, Peranakans, and the said Cheribon seafaring Javanese, and equipped with their own artillery and further necessities, except that I have had to supply them with some missing flintlocks and some gunpowder; the one and the other being united in this manner as if bound to each other by oaths of loyal assistance, are to put to sea this or tomorrow evening under the promise that the booty to be made, except for artillery, shall be for them.

Which injuries the pirates mostly inflicted during the boarding with their pikes or assagais and krises, by thrusting therewith from below and through their bamboo decks in such a manner that our men were repeatedly forced to leave the vessel. Whereby also, and from the fire that ensued thereon, nothing was captured with the aforesaid vessel except a few native items, a quantity of genuine pirate firearms with a swivel gun, and three more of their so-called champans. All of which is mentioned in the accompanying inventory, captured by the Cheribonese during the boarding actions, and it is requested that this may be kept here as a remembrance.
