Admiral [illegible] Departing ship Admiral Tromp has enjoyed here at this place, underneath stood: In the Castle of Good Hope, was signed: M. Bergh, sworn clerk, in the margin: the 8th of March, anno 1751. Batavia. To the Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed Jacob Mossel, Governor-General, and the Honorable Councillors of the Indies. Right Honorable, Stern, Highly Respected, Valiant, Most Wise, Prudent, Most Generous Lord and Honorable Lords. On the 23rd and 28th of the past month of February, the ships Hartkamp and Voorsigtigheijd departed from here for Batavia, after which, or on the 2nd of this month of March, there also set sail from this roadstead the Lord Admiral and Extraordinary Councillor of the Indies Hendrik Swellengrebel, with the return fleet belonging under his flag, De Liefde, De Herstelder, Crabbendijk, Huijs ten Duijne, and Bevalligheijd, as well as the hooker Hector, all of which, because it shortly thereafter became calm, came to anchor near Robben Island; further, the following day, on account of the continuing contrary wind and heavy swells from the west, they returned to this Table Bay, the same ships subsequently departing from here again in the night between the 5th and 6th of this month, and subsequently successfully reaching the open sea; meanwhile the bearer of this, the ship Admiral Tromp, has again been made ready and prepared to sail, in which, according to the accompanying bill of lading and invoice drawn up here, have been shipped for Batavia, namely: 90 leagers of Cape wine, 2 aams of tarragon vinegar, as well as the glass and copper beads that were brought back here from Rio de la Goa, and of which mention was made in our humble dispatch of the 9th of January last; the same consisting of the following, to wit: 13861 lb. glass beads, 1870 lb. copper beads. And whereas there are also still found here in the trade warehouse eight boxes with four thousand pounds of yellow and red bar copper, which already some years ago was sent here unordered from the Fatherland, without the same being of any use at this place, and that this copper should otherwise remain lying here any longer to the detriment of the Honorable Company, we therefore take the liberty to request Your Right Honorable's esteemed orders in this regard, whether the same might find employment at Batavia and may be sent thither. Furthermore, the officers of this ship Admiral Tromp, now lying ready to sail, have properly delivered the cargo which it carried for this government, with the exception of the following, which was found to be either short, spoiled, or broken: Namely: 1862 lb. rice delivered short, being 1¼ percent on the 155000 lb. that were shipped in total in that vessel. 9735 lb. rice received spoiled. 94 pieces of teak planks which, out of 1000 pieces, were delivered broken. Which deficient rice, as not exceeding the allowance, as well as that which was delivered spoiled, for the reasons presented by the skipper of this vessel Jacob Clasz, together with the broken teak planks, since the same will nevertheless necessarily be of use as stowage wood for the ships, have been passed under Your Right Honorable's esteemed favorable interpretation and written off in the trade books of this government, as will more fully appear from the resolution taken regarding this in this Castle under the 4th of this month and transmitted herewith in copy, to which is joined in copy the letter with the documents belonging thereto, which we had the honor to send on the first of this current month of March with the aforementioned return ships.

From Cape of Good Hope, the 8th of March 1751. to write ships to the Most Noble Lords Majores, while we shall finally note that on the 6th of the same month of March the French ship Le Rouille departed from here, and contrary to this, yesterday the Company's ship Overnes arrived at this roadstead with one dead and two sick, having put out to sea from the River Canton in China on the 14th of November last, and having sailed out of the Sunda Strait on the 28th of December following together with the ship Nieuw Vijvervreugd, which had joined it there and had likewise departed from China on the 20th of the said month of November, the officers of the said ship Overnes having reported here that on the 27th of the just departed month of February, in sight of Cape Agulhas, they hailed the Ceylon return ship Het Wapen van Hoorn, which lost all its masts in heavy weather about 40 miles east of the aforesaid Cape, and that having supplied that vessel with a main topsail yard in order to put it in a better position to make this bay with the jury stumps rigged, they subsequently separated from that ship Het Wapen van Hoorn on the 2nd of this month of March during the blowing of a stiff cold gale from the southwest; it, as well as the aforementioned ship Nieuw Vijvervreugd, is therefore expected here from moment to moment. Furthermore, on the 14th of this month of March, with three dead and one sick from China, the ship Nieuw Vijver Vreugd arrived safely here at the Roadstead, and on the 21st thereafter the outbound ship Piesenburg with one deceased and eight disabled persons, which vessel put to sea from Texel on the 18th of November last with the ship de Gustaaff Willem, and having together from the 25th of December to the 2nd of January past lain at the Island of Santiago for refreshments, they subsequently became separated from one another under the Line; moreover, on the 18th of this aforementioned month of March, the French ship Le Monteran also sailed into this Table Bay, which put to sea on the 3rd of December of the previous year with 196 heads under the command of Captain Du Bosse Guardijn from Port-Lorient and is destined for China. From Cape of Good Hope the 24th of April Anno 1757 From Cape of Good Hope the 24th of April Anno 1751 115 written off from the Government, as well as the shortage on the Arrack and the deficiency caused by the leaking and bursting of the aforementioned five leaguers of the same, as in respect to those leaguers, according to the attached copy of the Judicial Minutes, it was confirmed under solemn oath by Captain van Ingen and his chief mate that the aforementioned five leaguers were indeed those of the Honorable Company, and that they did not profit in the least or most from the Arrack contained therein. But the missing rice, for the reason that according to the current custom and orders of Your Right Honorable Nobles it is only delivered here at 3100 pounds per koyan, was therefore charged to the officers of the bearer of this at purchase price, namely, Captain van Ingen for one half, and Lieutenant Jan Etienne Gonsal and Chief Mate Jacobus van der Stoel each for a one-fourth part, as becomes evident from the Resolution adopted in this regard at this Castle on the 22nd of this month, which is attached hereto in copy and accompanied by the copies of the letters and the annexes belonging thereto, which we had the honor to consign to the Gentlemen Majors in the fatherland with the aforementioned Bengal return ship Overschie, together with the copies of the deeds of a few persons whose conditions were improved here under the further approval of Your Right Honorable Nobles on this currently departing ship De Vreede. From Cabo de Goede Hoop the 12: Maij Anno 1751: 135 From Cabo de Goede Hoop the 12: Maij 1751: Having been requested by writing to be allowed to return from here to the Fatherland on account of the frivolous reasons set forth in that document, we, being disqualified for such a matter, having rejected this request, and furthermore in consideration that he, Predikant van der Veen, who in the meantime had once again been placed aboard the ship Middelburg, and upon the departure of that vessel, under the pretext of having relapsed, once more had to remain here, currently finds himself fully recovered, and that after the departure of the bearers of this letter, during the following three months, no more outward-bound ships are expected at this Cape roadstead, it would consequently be nothing but very difficult for him, along with his family, to navigate to Batavia with a vessel arriving in the Baaij Fals; consequently it was judged best and most advisable for the service of the Honorable Company to order the said Predikant van der Veen, for the furtherance of his voyage, to depart for Batavia with the ship Nieuwstad, as it is unencumbered with passengers, and there, as the competent place, should he find it necessary, to renew this request to be allowed to return to the Fatherland or indeed to seek his right, in case he should find himself aggrieved here by anyone; but seeing that instead of obeying this as was proper, standing before the meeting, while uttering various insolent words, it was answered with great obstinacy by him that he would or could not depart from here at all to Your Right Honorable Worships' capital, we have consequently found ourselves compelled, for the maintenance of the respect of this Government, which was highly compromised by such behavior, to have to decide that the often-mentioned Predikant van der Veen, upon his continued refusal thereof, should be forced to depart for Batavia, by having him brought on board the aforementioned ship Nieuwstad by an Officer and some men, and thus to make him continue the voyage to India for which he was engaged in the Fatherland, not doubting but that Your Right Honorable Worships will be pleased to consider this action of ours as well done. Oloff Martini Bergh, containing the renewed recommendation made by him on the order of the Noble Lord Governor to the Reverend Hermanus van der Veen to depart for Batavia, together with the notification of the resolution taken regarding him, the Reverend Van der Veen, in case of further obstinate refusal. Number 6: Authentic copy of reports rendered by the Chief Surgeons of this Government, from which it appears that the aforementioned Reverend, having been examined by them regarding his alleged indisposition, was found to ail nothing, and that on the contrary he was fully in a condition to be able to depart for Batavia. Number 7: Authentic copy of that of Ensign August Fredrik Beutler, from which is evident in what manner the said Reverend van der Veen finally departed on board the ship Nieuwstad, together with what seditious speeches were made by him to several assembled groups of male and female persons, both at his lodging and on the beach. Number 8: Authentic copy of the letter from the Captain-Lieutenant of the ship Den Gouverneur-Generaal, Cornelis Vis, containing a request, on account of the wretched condition of his crew, to be permitted to enter the roads here in Table Bay. Number 9: Bill of lading, invoices of the wines and other goods that have been shipped off here in the bearer of this. Number 10: Receipt for such empty water casks as were removed from it for the service of this Government. Number 11: Answered requisition of necessities for Batavia made from this place, and brought here by the Oost-Capelle. From Cape of Good Hope, the 8th of June 1751: From Cape of Good Hope, the 8th of June, the year 1751. was capable of continuing his journey to India; one was therefore obliged, in order to put into effect the so frequently mentioned resolution concerning his person, to dispatch an ensign with a sergeant and six soldiers from this garrison to his lodgings, upon whose appearance that minister, albeit after some resistance, declared that he would proceed on board, whereupon, the said detachment taken along having been sent back to this Castle by the aforementioned ensign, he, van der Veen, subsequently went to the boat lying ready for him on the beach and sailed with it to the previously cited ship Nieuwstad, the said minister having not yet been able to refrain, before and prior to his departure from his lodgings, from delivering several seditious speeches to those gathered with him to the number of between 30 and 40, both men and women, who also accompanied him as far as the beach, and among other things that they were to continue in their faith, and not let themselves be drawn away from it by any oppressions nor violence such as was then being committed against him, as your Right Honourable Worships may be pleased to observe more closely from the very speculative report concerning this which was delivered by the aforementioned ensign, which also accompanies this in copy: from all of which we wish to hope that your Right Honourable Worships will not only be pleased with our conduct in this matter; but moreover we humbly request that you will have the goodness to maintain the respect of this government in this regard, so that in future other such sorts of ministers may lose the desire to undertake such improper dealings, the more so because through their conduct they have begun to cause quite some commotion among this congregation, which otherwise has always remained in reasonable rest and peace — On the 24th and 25th of the recently past month of May, there arrived in False Bay the ships Het Hof d'Uno and Oost-Capelle, the first of which put to sea on the 2nd of February of this year from off Rammekens, and lay at the island of São Tiago from the 9th to the 17th of March thereafter, with 5 dead and 10 incapacitated, but the return ship Oost-Capelle in a desolate condition with respect to its crew, as 20 persons thereof, and among them Captain Boonekamp, had died during the voyage, and 50 others were ill, so that in order to bring that vessel to the proper roadstead in Simon's Bay, some seamen from Het Hof d'Uno had to be sent to it, subsequently, in the night between the 26th and 27th of the aforementioned month of May, a Company's ship came to anchor in sight of this shore, between the Lion's Head and Robben Island; to which, at the break of day, upon hearing some cannon shots fired from that hull, two vessels manned with crew were dispatched from this Table Bay by the undersigned Governor, both to come to the aid of that vessel with them if it should come to need it, and further to learn how matters stood with that ship, and what the reasons might be that it had come to anchor at the said place and had not continued its voyage to False Bay; whereupon, on the return here at midday of one of the aforementioned vessels, there was brought to us the missive, transmitted herewith in copy, written by Captain-Lieutenant Cornelis Vis, stationed on the aforementioned vessel, being the return ship from Batavia, Den Gouverneur Generaal, to the well-mentioned Governor; whereby the said Captain-Lieutenant, while making known: that because of the incapacity of his entire ship's company, both officers and sailors, of whom a portion had died during the voyage and the other lay ill, he was unable to control the ship any longer, and also for the reason that they had not been able to make False Bay owing to contrary winds, he had been compelled, for the preservation of the vessel under his command and those still living on it

From Cabo de Goede Hoop, the 8th of June, anno 1751. living people at the cited place to let fall the anchor, and further came to request assistance and permission to arrive in these Cape roads, we have, in consideration of the desolate and helpless condition in which that ship den Gouverneur Generaal then found itself, and that the same could not have been sent from the place where it lay to the Baaij Fals without being exposed to the utmost danger, whereas on the contrary that keel could be in this Tafel Baaij within a few hours with the slightest breeze; for this reason and because no better outcome could be devised in this matter, for the service of the Honorable Company and in trust that this will obtain your Right Honorable and Most Respected approval, thought it best to grant the aforesaid Captain Lieutenant Cornelis Vis his request to enter these Cape roads; following which, with the assistance immediately dispatched from here to it, that ship sailed into this bay that very day in the afternoon. And meanwhile, while everything that can serve for the speedy recovery of the sick and incapacitated, both of that ship den Gouverneur Generaal and of its companion Oost Capelle, is being continuously put into effect, the re-equipping of the bearer of this, the aforementioned outward-bound ship het Hoff d' Uno, has progressed so far that this vessel on this date could be dispatched from its berth in the Baaij Fals to Batavia, in which vessel the following has been shipped from this place for the cited Indian capital, namely: 4 leggers of Cape wine 3 half-aams of the same 42 lb of garden seeds of various sorts As will further appear from the bill of lading invoice made thereof, accompanying this, along with which there also goes, answered, the requisition recently made from this Government by your Right Honorable and Most Respected. We having furthermore, for the replacement of the deceased persons on the just-mentioned ship Oost-Capelle, as well as the sick who will have to remain in this hospital on account of continuous weakness, taken the liberty to draft twenty crew members from this ship 't Hoff d' Uno, while the dead and the incapacitated remaining here from the Gouverneur Generaal will be replaced as best as possible with other crew from this Government. And as the minister Sijbrandus Columba, who due to poor physical health has likewise remained here from the ship from the Fatherland de Gustaaff Willem, being now fully recovered, cannot continue his journey from here to Batavia with this ship ready to sail het Hoff d' Uno on account of the impediment of the passengers who are on board, his Reverence will accordingly only be able to do so with the first available shipping opportunity. Right Honorable, Stalwart, Highly Respected, Valiant, Most Wise, Prudent, Very Generous Sir and Honorable Sirs: After the writing of our latest humble letter accompanying this in copy, of the 8th of June past, which departed with the ship 't Hof d' Und that put to sea from False Bay on the 18th ditto thereafter; the return ships mentioned therein, den Gouverneur Generaal and Oost Capelle, having continued their voyage on the 22nd and 24th of the same month, both from this Cape Roads and from aforesaid False Bay to the Netherlands; which were followed on the 8th of July thereafter by the Bengal return ship Witsburg, which put to sea from the River Ganges on the 10th of March of the current year, and called at this corner on the 20th of the aforementioned month of June; there subsequently arrived in False Bay, in very good condition, on the dates below, the following two outward-bound vessels, namely: 29th of July: d' Eendragt with 8 dead, 18 sick, which departed from Texel on the 28th of April past in company with the ship Baarsande, from which it was separated on the 30th ditto off the Forelands; 31st of July: Schakenbosch with 3 dead, no sick, having put to sea from Goeree on the 12th of the aforementioned month of April. From Cabo de Goede Hoop, 12 August Anno 1751: From Cabo de Goede Hoop, 12 August Anno 1751: 157 ship Schakenbosch, we must also dutifully record that during the night following the arrival of that keel in the frequently mentioned Baaij Fals, a fire broke out in its galley. As appears from the report annexed hereto in copy from the master of equipage of this government, Hendrik de Ruijter, together with the master of the ship carpenters here, Barend van Dockum, all the lead of the said galley, both from beneath the floor and against the ship's side, melted, and 4 quickwork timbers and the chocks on the port side of the said galley burnt through into the hold over a length of two feet and a width of 12 to 14 thumbs. Consequently, the said vessel had to be provided here with another quickwork timber, as well as an entirely new floor in its galley. Furthermore, the following goods have been shipped here in the bearer of this: 4 leggers of Cape wine 5 half-aams of salted cauliflower 3 ditto sauerkraut In Schakenbosch: 4 leggers of Cape wine 4 half-aams of salted cauliflower Savoy ditto 2 half-aams of red cabbage As appears in more detail from the bill of lading invoices made thereof and appended hereto, alongside which we have the honor to transmit to Your Right Honorable Excellencies a copy of the highly esteemed letter from the Lords Mayors dated 30 March of this year, brought here by the ship d' Eendragt, together with the copies of the letters that we took the liberty to consign to the well-mentioned Their Right Honorable Excellencies by the previously mentioned return ships den Gouverneur Generaal, Oost Capelle, and Witsburg under the dates of 12, 18, 22 June, and 3 July last. Likewise, there are also being transmitted with the ship d' Eendragt the general muster roll of all the servants of the Honorable Company assigned to this government, and a separate roll of the qualified officials, as they were respectively found to be in service at the end of June of the current year, being accompanied by the copy deed of such a person as was promoted here on that ship d' Eendragt for Your Right Honorable Excellencies' further approval; to all of which we shall finally add in all respect that the Reverend Sijbrandus Columba, pursuant to what was noted in our humble letter of 8 June last, is now proceeding with his journey from here to Your Right Honorable Excellencies' capital city on the repeatedly mentioned ship Schakenbosch.
