From Cape of Good Hope, the 13th of November 1751 From Cape of Good Hope, the 13th of November, in the year 1751 with the ship Tulpenburg. Right Honorable, Stern, Highly Respected, Valiant, Most Wise, Prudent, Very Generous Lord and Noble Lords Batavia To the Right Honorable, Valiant Lord Jacob Mossel, Governor-General, and Noble Lords, Councilors of the Indies Number 4: Authentic copy of the declaration likewise granted by the commissioned seamen, from which it is, among other things, established for what reasons the aforementioned vessel had to be allowed to depart from here without replacing its cannon that were thrown overboard with others. Number 5: Bill of lading, invoice of the goods and other items that were loaded here in the bearer of this for Batavia. Number 6: Authentic copy of the report of the commissioned members from the Council of Justice here, who tasted the aforementioned wines and found them to be in good condition. Number 7: Receipt for the empty water casks, iron bars, etc., which had to be unloaded from this ship Tulpenburg for the use of this government. Number 8: Copies of the deeds of some persons assigned thereto and improved here. Number 9: Two copies of answered pay accounts brought here from the fatherland by the companion ships d' Eendragt and Erffprins. Number 10: Expense account of that which the bearer of this has enjoyed from this government. The last time we had the honor of writing to Your Right Honorable was on the first of the recently departed month of September, with the ships Barzande and Erffprins, which, having continued their voyage from here to Batavia on the sixth thereafter, it was shortly after this, or on the 11th of that month of September, after having been about 5 months underway, that the late ship the Batavia appeared again on this Cape anchorage, which, due to the continuous severe weather that it encountered in the last two months of its voyage near this coast, not only suffered very much and was frequently in distress, indeed so much so that its officers had to throw six pieces of ordnance into the sea to make the ship rise, but also wherein that vessel fell into such a pitiful condition with respect to its crew, that of the 80 heads with which that vessel was dispatched from Batavia, 41 persons, and among them the Captain-Lieutenant Pieter Pietersz, died at sea. Of the remaining 39 surviving crew members, only three were, when that ship came to anchor in this bay, in a state that one could say they were fit to perform duty, the others having found themselves in such a poor condition that they almost all had to be brought to this hospital, and furthermore other men had to be sent on board from the shore here, both to moor the ship and to perform the other necessary ship work. Wherewith, and with the calking, paying, and repairing of that vessel, while on the other hand all possible means were employed for the recovery of the sick, so much haste was made that through this, and the addition to it of fresh and healthy men from this government in place of the above-mentioned deceased, as well as of its sick brought here who, owing to persistent weakness, had to remain in this hospital, that vessel was put in a state to be dispatched on the 16th of the past month of October, and on the 22nd thereafter, being well provided with everything, to continue its voyage from here to Europe with a favorable south-southeast wind. Wherefore we now have the honor to transmit here enclosed in copy the letters and the annexes belonging thereto which we took the liberty to direct to our lords and masters under the first-mentioned date with that ship the Batavia, while to the letter of Your Right Honorable Below stood: In the Castle of Good Hope, the 13th of November, in the year 1751. From Cape of Good Hope, the 13th of November 1754, Cape of Good Hope, the 13th of November, in the year 1751. Honorable, highly esteemed sirs, dated the 8th of April of this year, which has been delivered here with the aforementioned vessel, finding nothing else to respond to than that as soon as the vessel Het Fortuyn, appointed as a second late ship, should still happen to appear at this corner, the same shall also be forwarded from here to the Netherlands with the utmost speed, we shall further let this serve as our dutiful notification that on the 29th of the just mentioned month of October, the bearer of this, the outward-bound ship Tulpenburg, which put to sea from Texel on the 9th of June last and called at the island of Saint Iago on the 2nd of August following, arrived safely in this Table Bay in a desirable condition and with only six dead and thirteen sick. At which place it encountered in good condition the ships Lugtenburg and Oosthuijsen. Which latter vessel, having put to sea from Texel on the 22nd of May of last year, after having struggled for some time on the Brazilian coast without being able to weather Cape Saint Augustine, had to come to anchor at Mandao in the month of October following, from where that ship Oosthuijsen departed again after a stay of two months, or on the 2nd of December of that same year, without, however, being able to continue its voyage hither at that time, as the winds constantly blew against it, so that it was finally forced on the 22nd of February of this year, with 36 dead and 30 sick, to seek a refuge in the river of Paramaribo before Suriname. At which place the officers of that keel reprovisioned themselves as best they could and, having attended to the ship, put to sea again and at last safely arrived at the aforementioned island of Saint Iago, where that vessel was once again assisted with both crew and provisions by the officers of this ship lying in the roadstead ready to sail as well as of Lugtenburg, and placed in a condition for departure. Thereupon the three of them set sail from that island on the 13th of the recently passed month of August, and on the 25th following parted from one another, so that those two ships are expected here at any moment. Meanwhile, regarding the further occurrences on the so frequently mentioned ship Oosthuijsen from its departure from the fatherland until its arrival before Suriname, we respectfully refer to the papers that are sent to your right honorable sirs by the gentlemen directors of the Chamber of Hoorn with the bearer of this, only having to add thereto that the skipper of that keel, Jan Thuijnman, passed away at the said island of Saint Iago. The ship Tulpenburg now lying fully ready again, the same is therefore dispatched from here on this date with the following goods shipped here for your right honorable sirs, namely: 20 leggers of stone wine 27 lasts of white beans 799 lb of elephant tusks, being: 310 lb first sort, consisting of 9 pieces 336 lb second sort, consisting of 35 pieces 153 lb third sort, consisting of 31 pieces with which tusks has furthermore been dealt according to the order of the Honorable Company. 2 aams of rosewater, of which four bottles are sent over in a small case as a sample 7 half-aams of Savoy cabbage 2 half-aams of red cabbage Against which, because we have been so destitute thereof here that the smithies at this place had to stand idle for some time to the greatest inconvenience, we have had to take the liberty, in order to provide herein and to help keep the Company's work going, to offload from the country's cargo of the bearer of this for the benefit of this government: 6 2/3 hoeds of smithing coals 4640 lb of assorted iron in 148 bars, as well as 4 barrels of tar as will appear from the bill of lading, invoice, and copy of the granted receipt sent herewith regarding the receipt of the just mentioned offloaded goods, to which are added in copy the deeds of the persons who had to be promoted on this ship Tulpenburg, subject to the further approval of your right honorable sirs. From Cape of Good Hope, the 13th of November 1731 From Cape of Good Hope, the 13th of November 1731 how the present grain crop is conditioned, which for the present shows favorably, and we have reason to hope that we shall be able to supply your Right Honorable Worships with a good quantity thereof in the coming spring, if in the meantime no disasters intervene. Arrival here of the English return ship the Swallow, and that the ship Oosthuijsen is held back at Robben Island by contrary winds, without being able to reach this bay as yet. Just as this was drafted thus far, there arrived and anchored here in the roadstead the day before yesterday, the 11th of this month, the English ship the Swallow, Captain Jan Bel, which set sail from Fort St. David on the 16th of August last; but the aforementioned ship Oosthuijsen, which has been held back at Robben Island for about four days by contrary winds, having attempted on the same day to sail into this bay, was obliged toward evening, because the south-east wind blew up again, to return thither. Upon the return of a shore boat which had gone to meet that vessel, it was learned that since its departure from Suriname another 23 of its crew have died and there were still 10 invalids on board, upon which news about thirty sailors were sent from the shore at the first opportunity to assist that vessel; and as yesterday a signal was again made for an approaching ship, we trust that it may be Lugtenburg, the more so because that vessel parted from the aforementioned ship Oosthuijsen a few days ago. With which concluding this, we commend your Right Honorable Worships' highly esteemed persons, together with the important interests of the Honorable Company, to the protection of the Almighty, and remain with due deference, Right Honorable, Valiant, Highly Esteemed, Valiant, Wise, Prudent, and Most Generous Lord and Noble Lords, your Right Honorable Worships' most humble and obedient servants. After several days of waiting for a favourable wind, the outbound ship Tulpenburg departed from here on the 20th of the past month of November, together with the English ship the Swallow. The former vessel, weather and wind permitting as of this date, is to be followed by the bearers of this letter, the ships Lugtenburg and Oosthuijsen. The first-mentioned vessel, on account of the vehement south-easterly winds which blew almost continuously for nearly three weeks, could not be got ready any earlier than today. Meanwhile, so much speed was made with preparing the new sails that Oosthuysen needed, as well as remedying the old ones, and furthermore repairing the defects found on the hull itself, that all of this has now been accomplished. In such manner, through this and through supplying her with the necessary provisions for the further voyage from this place to Batavia, that vessel was put in condition to be sent onward from here in company with Lugtenburg, with a healthy and fresh crew. Meanwhile, in order to prevent further disorders and disagreements on the said ship Lugtenburg, we had to take the liberty of exchanging the bookkeeper Hendrik Beukelman, who had arrived on her, with the one from Oosthuysen, named Bernardus Brouwer, and transferring the one to the other vessel. We hope that this will obtain the approval of your Right Honourable and Highly Esteemed Sirs. Likewise, that passage from this place to Batavia on Lugtenburg was granted by us to Major Alexander Herbort, who had remained behind here from the ship Barzande. Because the grain crops still standing in the fields and now ripening continue to appear favourable, and since—if no notable accidents intervene—an abundant harvest is expected therefrom, we have, in order to provide your Right Honourable and Highly Esteemed Sirs with a good quantity of wheat early, shipped 38 9/37 lasts thereof from our stock on the ship Lugtenburg. 31 From Cape of Good Hope the 10 January 1752 From Cape of Good Hope the 10 January 1752 the ship d' Hercules having departed to your Right Honorable Worships, among other things notice having been given that the return ship Tolsduijn had been brought off from the place where it had sat aground and furthermore come to anchor in the proper roadstead of Robben Island, we shall now, concerning this matter, further have the honor to say that it was reported by the Master of Equippage of this place, Hendrik de Ruyter, upon his return here on the date of this letter, that after the ship had struck very heavily and frequently, he had finally with much effort brought it afloat and from the place where it had sat aground, as was just mentioned, to a good anchorage, from where it is to be expected here with the first favorable wind, when that vessel, as well for the above-mentioned reasons as because it has become very leaky, will have to be unloaded in order thus to be able to find out how matters stand with it and whether it will further be able to put to sea; intending, in order to lose no time, as soon as the provision ship Bredenhoff, which having drifted off from the east shore is now also lying at anchor by Robben Island, shall be unloaded as speedily as possible of its goods held for this government, to transship the cargo and crew of the more-mentioned ship Tolsduijn into Bredenhoff, and to send the same therewith to the fatherland, while in the meantime we shall, if after inspection made it is found fit for this, let the aforesaid ship Tolsduijn return again to Batavia with such produce of this country as can conveniently be loaded therein for that capital, not failing to give your Right Honorable Worships the dutiful notice of the outcome of all this at a further opportunity. The said ship De Liefde, together with the also outward-bound ship De Bevalligheijt, was sighted by the ship Voorland at the South latitude of 34 degrees, on which account those two vessels as well as the other abovementioned are expected here at any moment. And as it has become apparent to us from the esteemed missive of the Lords Majors that His Serene Highness the Lord Prince of Orange has pleased, upon the nomination of the Honorable Directors, to choose as Governor General of India in the place of the late His Excellency Gustaaff Willem Baron van Imhoff the Right Honorable Highly Esteemed Lord Jacob Mossel, we have therefore in all humility the honor to congratulate His High Nobility from the bottom of our hearts on his elevation to that weighty and illustrious office, wishing him a long reign accompanied by prosperity and all conceivable blessings for the well-being of the Honorable Company and our beloved Fatherland. A:o 1752 shall blow for the security of the return ships that during that time are due to arrive here from India, with a respectful request that the two other packets joined hereto for the island of Ceylon may, through the favor of your Right Honorable Sirs, reach their address in due course. On the 21st of December of the aforementioned year, there appeared in these roads, and on the 1st of this month departed again from here for Fort St. David, the English Company ship Durrington, which under the command of Captain Drake, carrying 28 pieces of cannon and 70 crew, set sail from the Downs hither on the 25th of August last. Meanwhile, on the dates below, there also appeared at this Government the following two English King's ships, namely: the 25th December, Ruby, Capt. Knight, with 50 pieces of cannon and 350 crew the 26th ditto, Vigilant, Rousier, with 60 ditto and 495 ditto being together under the supreme command of Commodore Lisle, having departed from Bombay on the 14th of April of the past year, and on the 12th of November thereafter from Fort Dauphin on Madagascar, intending to head directly from here for England, which, however, will take some time yet, since the said ship Ruby, having lost its main and mizzen masts, must be provided with new ones here. One of them, which is presumed to be the supply ship Breedenhoff, dropped anchor under the east shore here, and the other ran before the wind toward Robben Island. But concerning this last-mentioned vessel, we must, to our regret, now report the following further to your Right Honorable, namely that early the next morning the ship hoisted its flag in distress and fired some single shots, whereupon, in the assumption that this was being done for water or other provisions, a shore boat with drinking water, etc., was immediately sent to it. It was not until today that one of the aforementioned vessels was able to return, and one received, by the letter of the aforementioned Master of the Equippage regarding that ship enclosed herewith in copy, the following very unpleasant news, namely that the cited vessel, being the return ship Tolsduin, is stuck all around in the rocks a large cable's length from Robben Island, right in front of the Postholder's house. And that he, the Master of the Equippage, after first having secured that ship from further jarring onto the shore, carried out the kedge anchors brought along with much effort and danger, and thereupon did his utmost to get the ship afloat again, without, however, having been able to accomplish anything more for the present than to cause the aforementioned vessel to turn so much that its bow is now positioned away from the shore; but that, nonetheless, that vessel continues to strike violently, whereby its tiller and tiller-sweep have broken, and the ship is also beginning to leak severely. Upon which news, and the request made on that account by the often-mentioned Master of the Equippage, the hooker Termejen was dispatched to that ship Tolsduijn this morning to take off the heavy ordnance and other heavy goods there, in order, if possible, to be able to get that vessel afloat again, the result of which and the further condition of that ship, as well as how and in what manner this misfortune occurred to it, we will not fail to give your Right Honorable further notice of in the future. Register of such letters and documents as are consigned from here under today's date to His High Nobility, the Governor-General and the Council of the Indies in Batavia, by the ships Bosenhoven, De Spaarsaamheit, and Vosmaar. Here on their voyage to the destined ports of many outward-bound ships, goods shipped on three keels. Right Noble, Honorable, highly Esteemed, Valiant, prudent, most generous Gentlemen and Noble Lords. By the ships Boschenhoven, De Spaarzaamhaijt, and Vosmaar, in triplicate. As we had the honor to advise Your Right Noble and High Mightinesses in our dispatch of humble letters dated the 12th of this month of February, which were sent from here with the three return ships that put out to sea from this roadstead on the 16th following, namely De Bevalligheid and Voorland, there are on today's date dispatched onward from this place to their respective destined ports the return ships Het Huys te Manpad and Zuyderburg, serving here as the latest, as well as the carriers of this letter, the outward-bound ships Bosenhoven, De Spaarzaamheid, and Vosmaar. In these last three keels, the following goods have been shipped here for Batavia, as shown by the accompanying bills of lading and invoices prepared for them, namely: Boschenhoven: 74 lasts of wheat. De Spaarzaamheyd: 71 1/37 lasts of wheat. Vosmaar: 5 lasts of fine groats. In contrast, from the Company's cargo of De Spaarzaamheid, for the use of this Government, as it was most urgently needed to prepare the return ships currently present and already departed, there had to be discharged 84 pieces of Dutch sailcloth of various types, as further specified in the receipt granted for it to the officers of the aforementioned ship De Spaarzaamheijt; which receipt, as well as the deeds of the persons who were promoted here on the aforementioned vessel and on Bosenhoven, subject to the kind further approval of Your Right Noble and High Mightinesses, are enclosed herewith in copy. From Cape of Good Hope, the From Cape of Good Hope, the February 1752 and the Spaarzaamheid, we were to lighten from them such chests of money as were shipped therein in the fatherland for the directorate in Bengal, we did not fail to put this into effect immediately with regard to the first two mentioned ships, but as with Bosenhoven and Spaarzaamheid no separate invoices were brought here of any money that was also laden in them for the said place, as had happened with regard to the other two vessels, and moreover it being ordered by the esteemed letter of the Right Honourable Lords Seventeen of 8 October of the said year, which is the other later one, already sent in copy to Your Right Honourable Excellencies, that only from the ships Huijgenwaard and Het Huijs te Rijsburg twenty chests of silver bars should be lightened in order subsequently to be forwarded from here to Ceylon with the ship Crabendyk, this has caused us embarrassment in finding a way out and in knowing through this whether the shipped chests of money in the aforementioned ships Bosenhoven and the Spaarzaamheid were intended, either in whole or in part, for Your Right Honourable Excellencies or for Bengal, we had to take the liberty of opening the fatherland invoices of the two keels addressed to Your Right Honourable Excellencies, from which it clearly appeared that no other money had been shipped in those two keels than for Batavia, we left the same resting therein and furthermore returned the two abovementioned invoices, after they had been sealed again, to the officers of the so often mentioned ships Bosenhoven and the Spaarzaamheid, which we hope will not appear displeasing to Your Right Honourable Excellencies, and likewise that we have permitted the Councillor of Justice Mr Jan Leonard de Hartogh, who arrived here with the said ship the Spaarzaamheid, to remain residing for some time at this place on account of his heavy physical condition. Right Honourable, Stern, Most Respected, Valiant, Most Wise, Prudent, Very Generous Lord and Noble Lords. 81 6 1 83 From Cape of Good Hope, 10 March 1752 From Cape of Good Hope, 10 March 1752 Reasons why keel of the same a certain convict remaining behind from the ship now sails with the bearer of two French receipt granted And whereas a person was also very urgently required in False Bay to supervise the hospital erected there and the sick or disabled of the ships of the Honourable Company that call at that bay, for which duty neither of the two chief surgeons appointed to the Honourable Company's hospital here can conveniently be spared, we have for this reason had to take Johannes van der Riet, who had been appointed chief surgeon on this ship De Snoek and who is trusted to possess the required ability for this, off the same and retain him here at this place, in order to perform his service in the aforesaid False Bay at the time and in the manner just mentioned; and subject to the further approval of Your Right Honourable and Most Respected Lordships, we have appointed in place of the aforementioned Van Riet as chief surgeon on the bearer of this David Gorge Escher, who arrived as assistant surgeon on the Huijs te Rijnsburgh, who upon examination was found capable for the post. Furthermore, the last of the convicts demanded back from here by Your Right Honourable and Most Respected Lordships, named Fortuyn of Bugis, who, on account of his indisposition at that time, could not depart with the ship De Waakzaamheid on which he had been placed, is now also crossing with this vessel. Further, on the dates written below, the following two French ships arrived at this government, namely: 8 March, Les Treize Cantons, Captain D'Apres de Mannevillette, mounted with 22 pieces of cannon and 80 hands. 9 March, Le Necessaire, Captain Tremosie, provided with 4 pieces of cannon and 30 men. Of which two ships, which sailed from Mauritius on 10 December of last year and together from Bourbon hither on the 24th of the same month, the first-mentioned is destined for Europe, and the other is to return from here to the aforesaid Mauritius.
