Batavia To the same as mentioned above The ship named in the margin hereof, to my regret, being unable to obtain cargo here, just as Your Right Honourables may be pleased to observe from the attached memorandum regarding what products remain here in stock under today's date; therefore, I have taken the liberty, under the benevolent interpretation of Your Right Honourables, to have the said vessel call at the main office of Samarang. Furthermore, this is accompanied by the expense account of the aforementioned vessel, which in all subservience is presented to Your Right Honourables by him who calls himself with all submission. Wherewith we take the liberty to let that keel return towards Batavia under our humble covering letters, with a respectful request to be allowed to write off in our trade books its costs to the amount of ƒ1878:15:— and expenses for what was spent on the same both here and at the office of Rembang amounting to the sum of ƒ392:2:8; while awaiting Your Right Honourables' much venerated authorization thereto, we take the liberty to present the same alongside the invoice and expense accounts, and further to sign ourselves with deep veneration in all loyalty and subservience. With the ship Beukesteijn, which after taking in nearly a full cargo of timber at Rembang became so leaky that, being unable to keep it afloat with tubs and pumps, it had to be discharged again, we can to our regret only send to Your Right Honourables: 3000 pieces leaguer staves 21 beams, long 30 feet, thick 14 to 16 inches 10 Amboina ditto, long 20 feet, thick 12 to 13 inches yielding, with the expenses incurred thereon, a sum of ƒ539:14:—, as evidenced by the bill of lading and invoice annexed hereto, accompanied by the expense accounts regarding what was provided to that vessel amounting to ƒ545:17, which we respectfully request to be allowed to write off in the trade books of this government; while we have the honour to offer to Your Right Honourables herewith those of the book year 1752, in the hope that its small decline in comparison with the preceding books may not be imputed to our industry and vigilance, but viewed with a favourable eye, the reasons for which are distinctly demonstrated in the following statement, showing what and how much the charges and profits of the entire Coast, confronted against those of the previous year, have increased or decreased, namely:

From Java's East Coast, the 30th of April 1753. being, alongside several other unmerchantable goods, disposed of at a loss in accordance with their High Noble Orders to avoid further damage, which has caused the profits on merchandise to run ƒ19003. 11. - less than in the previous year. Native servants stationed in the field against the rebels for the year, and their board money and rations, from which these decreased expenses have resulted. Expenses of the garrison is less: ƒ19877. 6. — This decrease occurs because the dragoons were employed in the field against the rebels for the most part of the entire book year, and their salary allowances were paid here less than in the previous year, which also falls to the account of the war train. Expenses of the hospital now less: ƒ885. 6. 8. This decrease is caused by fewer disabled persons having stayed here for treatment than elsewhere in the Company's hospital. Total: ƒ26486:8 —. Carried forward: ƒ26486. 8. — Carpentry and repairs is less: ƒ2443. 18. — The lesser carpentry and repairs this year compared to the previous one, due to the lesser scale of carpentry and repairs, causes this. For this reason, it was agreed at our session of the 14th of February to send the same forward to Paccalongang to collect a cargo of produce, whereto it had barely been able to obtain its dispatch when we were informed that that place was likewise destitute of produce. Wherefore we then had to resolve to rescind that decision, and to send it forward for that purpose to the eastern corner, from where it will already have returned. We hope that the ship D' Immagonda will also have returned to Your Right Noblenesses with as good a cargo as the just-mentioned bottom, and moreover that the snow de Wereld will shortly be able to return from there, with which we have sent thither the Reverend Minister Sicco Ittema for the administration of the Holy Sacraments. After doing so, he is to conduct the ecclesiastical visitations along the trading posts situated on the coast using a pantjalling, which the ministers have been ordered to provide him for that purpose, as well as for the return journey hither, and in its stead to retain the just-mentioned little ship until our further orders. We take the liberty furthermore reverently to report to Your Right Honourables that the first-mentioned vessel Knapenhoff, together with the ship 'T slot van Capelle, was promptly dispatched by us to Tagal to fetch a cargo of rice and timber, and the Gustaaff Willem was sent onward to Maccassar in accordance with your honoured order, all the aforesaid vessels having delivered their cargo well, except Dieshoek, which brought 42 bottles of sack too few, and the ship Vreedesteijn delivered 7 flasks of Geneva as well as 13 pieces of Grenadier Cleavers too few, notwithstanding that the cases in which these goods had been packed were found to be in good condition upon receipt, conforming to the submitted report of the delegates specifically appointed for the unloading, which is transmitted herewith to Your Right Honourables alongside the report of the authorities regarding the unloading; and the former shows moreover that the bottles and flasks were found broken, on which account we then very humbly beg Your Right Honourables' favourable permission to be allowed to write off in the trade books of this Government the amounts thereof, together with the expenses incurred on all those and several other ships that have called here at the subordinate offices, as well as what was laden therein, which, according to the accompanying 4 copies of Bills of Lading and Invoices, amounts to ƒ24007:12:—, and the expenses according to the annexed 9 Expense Accounts amounting to ƒ 1515:17:8. Furthermore, that Roosenburg's long detention and slow loading at Japara in the meantime may not be attributed or imputed to us, being caused solely and entirely by the lingering of the sugar suppliers; we assure Your Right Honourables that the subordinate Residents will in the future be kept so strictly to their duty by us that such shall not happen again; and in the meantime we have the honour very humbly to report that, upon Your Right Honourables' high qualification, it was decided by us at the session of the 2nd of February to have another similar vessel built at the Caligawees Shipyard instead of the Pantjalling De spion which was planned for burning, but since an opportunity subsequently presented itself here for the purchase of a similar vessel from the Rembang Resident Coertsz, we have abandoned that project, and at our meeting of the 18th of April two commissioners from the Political Council were appointed by us to inspect and appraise the same together with the Master of the Shipwrights, in order that, if found firm and strong, it might be taken over for the account of the Company, just as, upon their report submitted regarding this at the session of the 9th of the following month [illegible]

Reasons concerning the expenditures on boarding money and food rations at Rembang, Joana, and Japara in Anno 1752/1753, which the residents were circularized about as to where they should be charged and what they have to observe in that regard. 100 pieces of checked Cassas, common, 1 thread 20 pieces of checkered Chelassen 15 pieces of fine Hammams from Bengal, 4 threads 70 pieces of Japan bar copper submitted, it was agreed to have the second and third undersigned conclude an agreement with the owner for their purchase, provided it does not run too high in price, as thereby probably many expenses will be saved which the construction would otherwise inevitably drag along with it to the considerable encumbrance of the charges, regarding which with respect to the garrison expenses, as well as boarding money and food rations of the servants in the Eastern Quarter; the Commandant at Soerakarta, and the Residents at Rembang, Joana, and Japara, having been asked for reasons according to the notation in our humble letter of the ultimate of January past why these ran so excessively high in Anno 1752/1753, they have been able to supply no other reason than that these took their source solely and uniquely from the increased provisions that absolutely had to be made to the larger than ordinary number of military personnel who were present there, so we, considering that none of them seems to understand where all such expenses must be debited, have found it good on the same day to issue a circular order to the chiefs and residents of the subordinate offices to send here every three months a distinct specification of all that has been provided to the militia that does not belong to the permanent garrison, in order that, having been revised here, it can be entered into the train books and their chiefships and residencies subsequently relieved of those amounts, whose expenses besides that annually run so high that they almost absorb the profits, which one tries by all conceivable means to increase in order to present the state of this Government all the more favorably at the closing of the trade books, which particularly with the sale of merchandise, upon which at the recently held public auction on the 5th of April a considerable amount of ƒ16606:19:— or 80 percent gross was profited on a purchase amount of ƒ20737:16:—, as is distinctly indicated by the following auction list. Likewise to account for the meat and bacon brought into the expense account, the Soerabaja servants, upon the receipt of the extract of Your Right Honourables' respected missive mentioned above regarding the authorization for the purchase of rice at 20 Rixdollars the Coyang, because contrary to expectation no greater supply thereof had occurred in the autumn, have submitted for their excuse that at that time, after the departure of the bark De Don Quichot, no ships or vessels were at hand for the shipment of that grain, as if they already had a large stock purchased and in readiness to be able immediately to fill the ships arriving there, whereof however Leckerland and Nieuwstad have proved the contrary; considering that the first-mentioned vessel returned with a very small cargo and the last-mentioned entirely without cargo, wherefore, by no means wishing to be content with that weak reason, we have left the displeasure that Your Right Honourables might show in time over this for their account. To pay to the Soerabaja Shahbandar for four months, and to that of Passourouang and Bangil for six months, for which we take the liberty on their behalf both respectfully to thank Your Right Honourables, and for the three months granted to the farmers of the shahbandar duties and toll gates of Tagal, Soembaer, and Pamalang, as well as six months' remission of the amount of their farm moneys granted to those of Paccalongang and Batang; item for the free export of forty Coyangs of rice annually to the Indies' capital permitted to those of the four first-named places, until the time of their farm shall have expired; yet although we presume that this last-mentioned gratuity does not concern the prohibition that Your Right Honourables, in order to succeed the better in the rice collection, have been pleased to order us to make against all private export of that grain to elsewhere than Batavia, and even to Batavia, if such should impede the collection of 3000 lasts which the Company requires this year, we nevertheless find ourselves obliged in this respect to report to Your Right Honourables in all respect, that on the 25th ultimo, in hope of a favourable interpretation, we have decreed by an advertisement to prohibit indeed everywhere the export of that crop from this coast to elsewhere than Batavia, but not 87. Yet we have nonetheless ordered all the Residents to watch with all industry for the arrival and increase of the annual delivery of that and other products, and commanded the Shahbandar here to keep and weekly submit to the first-named a note of the imported and exported rice, so that we may be able to supply Your Right Honourables with an accurate return monthly, pursuant to Your honoured requisition concerning this, as soon as the crop has been reaped and the export can make progress. Just as we currently take the liberty to provide that elucidation in all respect concerning the points of the farmer of the shahbandar duties and toll gates at Grisseé, Nio Soanko, set down in his petition submitted to Your Right Honourables to obtain remission of payment of his farm moneys for a whole year, or else release from the farm itself, namely that they are not altogether dismissible, inasmuch as the villages along the beach and partly inland from Setra up to the Malay kampong were burned down, and the rivers Petra and Solo were closed and blocked by the departed Javanese to no small obstruction of trade, and consequently also to the detriment of that farmer, not counting the damage he will otherwise have suffered in the beginning of the troubles due to the flight of almost all the Chinese and Javanese residing there, among whom he had put out his ready money. Wherefore we pray that Your Right Honourables, upon his further petition and that of the farmer of the shahbandar duties and toll gates at Sidaijoe, Oeij Siamsaij, sent herewith, be pleased to give a favourable consideration, and to remit six months of farm moneys to both of them, considering the latter is currently over.

And furthermore, we have the honor very humbly to report that we have caused the overseers of the orphans to restore to the train cashbox, out of the estate of the fallen Major Hendrik de Clercq, such funds as that officer had accounted for less in his specifications, to the amount of Rds 187: 18: 12, than had been provided to him both in weapons and cash for his march to Maggalan, according to what is noted thereof in our resolution of the 18th of April last. Likewise, the pay bookkeeper of this government, administering in his capacity as Curator ad Lites the estate of the also fallen Captain Pierre Joseph Woutier, has been directed to reimburse the Company not only a sum of Rijxds 1466:—: which the said Captain, according to the demonstration previously made by the second signatory at the session of the 7th of February, had received in excess for remount money during his command at Passourouang and had not disbursed again, but also an amount of Rds 1939:-: to the regimental cashbox of the Corps of Dragoons on account of unpaid debts to the ranks and regimental funds, in order to be distributed to each according to what he might be owed. However, since the said pay bookkeeper testified that the proceeds of his estate after payment of the first-mentioned amount would fall far short of satisfying the latter, unless he were authorized to withdraw the deceased's pay accounts, amounting to a sum of f 1232:—:—, and to have settled the Rds 1500:—: in the custody of the Senior Merchant Dirck Willem van der Brughen according to the private bond dated the 22nd of June 1751, we have agreed to grant permission for the first, namely the withdrawal of the pay accounts, and, for the second, namely the collection of the aforesaid 1500 Rds, to respectfully request the assistance of Your High Excellencies. We further have the honor to inform Your High Excellencies with the requisite respect that in the Political Council, as well as in the Council of Justice, a seat was given on the 18th of the aforesaid month of April to the newly elected major of the Corps of Dragoons, Johan Jurgen Feber; and also in the latter council, previously on the 4th, to the junior merchant and Resident of Qualladamak, Bernhardus Lehman, whom we, upon his urgent request and on account of his continuous indisposition, on the 7th of March, following the example of the junior merchants Blacquiere and Meerman in the year 1748, have permitted to exchange offices with the junior merchant, shahbandar, and receiver of the Javanese Domains, Daniel van Pembroek, and to mutually transfer to each other the residency of Qualladamak and the collection of the Domains cum annexis, in order that the affairs at that office, which were falling very much behind due to the continued illness of the former, should not be entirely neglected; wherefore we also hope that this our disposition may be favorably approved by Your High Excellencies. We take the liberty very humbly to present to Your High Excellencies the request of the merchants Hendrik Duirveld and Breton: that there may be granted to them through your favor that which the senior merchant and former chief of Soera Carta, Balthazar Toutlemonde, was still owed by the Company for his extra emoluments granted to him yearly by Your High Excellencies from 1747/8 until 1751/2 inclusive, and the claim to which he has ceded to the petitioners in recompense for the services rendered to him, as appears from their petition, which we have the honor to exhibit herewith for that purpose, alongside 32 other pieces, namely: One from the captain and present commander of Soera Carta, Johan Hendrik Abrahams, to be permitted to enjoy yearly the aforementioned emoluments just like the aforementioned chief.
