From Java's East Coast the 31st May Anno 1753. to take into particular consideration, of whom the first now commands the Corps of Hussars; the following three and the aforesaid Lieutenant van Lebenn administer the vacant train companies of the deceased and retired Captains Herlijn, van Aar, van Stex, De Roth and Simonis; and the last exercises command over the Detachment of Infantry in the Baggaleen; proposing furthermore the sub-lieutenant Tideon van Maffe, so that upon the promotion of the aforementioned Krichner, he may succeed him as Lieutenant; the Cornet Iohan George Scholtz in place of the latter; and in place of the last-named, the Sergeant Chevalier de Keijser; furthermore, that there may be subrogated into the Corps of Dragoons in place of the promoted Captain Lieutenant Casper Christoffel Iahn, the Surgeon Hermanus van Allen; and in place of the deceased Cornet Iohan Feijscher, the Sergeant Jan Hendrik Heijdecker; likewise among the Infantry, that in place of the Lieutenants to be promoted and the deceased Klittner, the Ensigns Hermanus Deijseman, Ian Iacob Boos, Libregt Schade, Iacob Roelofz, Ian Iacob Neuhoff and Justus David Beutzeler may be favored with the rank of Lieutenant; and in place of them, as well as the deceased Ensigns Vrijberg, Dicksen, De Wild, and Munckhoff, there may advance to Ensigns the Sergeants who are now all already performing duty provisionally in that capacity under the train companies: Frans Haak, Iohannes Wolff, Frederik Lodewijk van Stralendorff, Willem van Frebel, Ian Casper Smit, Frans Baale and Willem Geselschap; and to replace with that rank the Ensign and under-major Carel Frederik Scholtsz, who died here locally, the Sergeant Hendrix Godfried Candeletrier. We very humbly request that Your High Nobilities may be pleased to take a favorable view of this our proposal; and in order to show Your High Nobilities not only that all those officers are necessarily required here, but also how many effective and provisional officers are serving here on the Coast, as well as into how many bodies or companies all the militia is divided, the first undersigned has the honor to present herewith alongside a general short strength return of the Corps of Dragoons, Hussars, and Infantry as well as the native militia, and together with a detailed distribution list, which demonstrates on the surrounding pages in which district each company is located; praying therefore most submissively that Your High Nobilities, in view of the fact that no officers are superfluous, may be pleased to take a favorable consideration upon all those petitions, and in particular that of the Lieutenant General Adjutant Donkel, because he has great need of him in all the field expeditions with regard to the militia; while we furthermore take the liberty to present to Your High Nobilities the requests, also at the instance of 6 servants to be placed in burger freedom, of the Surgeons Bernardus de Lack and George Gottlieb Caasbroek, as well as the assistant Hendrix te Mechelen, the Sergeant Frederik Willem van Herman, and the Corporal Ian Christoffel Hazert, to be discharged from the Company's service and placed in burger freedom, in accordance with the accompanying petitions. The ship named in the margin of this letter is laden with the products present here on hand, consisting of: 110 Coyangs of Rice. 20 Picols of Long Pepper. Of which I have the honor to present its bill of lading, invoice, and expense account, as well as a memorandum of the remaining products left here, while I presume to call myself with deep respect: Right Honorable, Valiant, Highly Esteemed, Valiant, Wise, Prudent, Discreet, Far-Ruling, very Generous Lords, and Honorable Lords! In dutiful reply to Your High Honors' highly honored letters brought here both by the ship De Geregtigheijd and by the overland route, dated the 26th of April, 5th, and 8th of this month, we have the honor to express to Your High Honors our utmost regret regarding the displeasure caused to you by the Council of Justice in sentencing the former Cornet Jean de Gor to banishment with confiscation of all his goods and monthly wages, and by that same verdict declaring him innocent, whereas, the latter being true, the former could not take place, any more than it had the property or was practicable, as Your High Honors rightly deigned to observe, that banishment and confiscation of goods could go together; and therefore we shall also, since Your High Honors have deigned to disapprove the said verdict for that reason and to send the aforementioned De Gor as innocent to Europe, be attentive and take care that in the future no such improper sentences are handed down by the aforementioned Council; while in the meantime, in conformity with Your High Honors' highly respected order, we have caused to be paid out by the Fiscal as well as the Diaconate To Batavia, to the same as aforementioned. each their portion of the monthly wages enjoyed by him, which have totaled 280 guilders and 16 stuivers; and we, as having taken this in favor of the Corporal here, respectfully request that they may be reimbursed from their treasury at the capital of the Indies, there being moreover no goods found with the aforementioned De Gor, otherwise we would not fail to monetize the same at public auction, and to forward the proceeds thereof to the honored disposal of Your High Honors, to whom we take the liberty respectfully to give this elucidation regarding the Dragoon officers: that all those mentioned in the first-cited letter could not well have been proposed by us otherwise than in our humble letter of the last of January past, because, due both to the falling of the entire company of Captain Wouthier and to the demise of other officers, they had to step up again after their first provisional appointment as Cornet or Ensign, being the senior ones, without there having been an opportunity in the meantime to request their commissions from Your High Honors, as the first undersigned will have the honor to show further by separate advices; and therefore we pray that they all may still enjoy Your High Honors' precious favor to be promoted to the rank for which they are proposed in our aforementioned respectful letter, particularly Jan Christoffel Beuman and Willem Scheffer, who presently must serve as Lieutenants, the former under the company of Captain von Hayn and the latter under that of Captain-Lieutenant Jahn, since some of these and more other officers have already served for nearly two years, and by this singular benevolence to be shown they will also be more and more encouraged to conduct themselves as men of fortitude and bravery. Meanwhile expressing to Your High Honors their humble gratitude for their advancement are the Sub-Lieutenant Charle Louis Colman and the Junior Merchant Frederik Pieter Decker, which last mentioned has already been recalled by us from the East Hook, where he performs his service, to await employment here, and whose ministers we have ordered to dispatch to Your High Honors at once all the coconut oil in stock, and the snow De Werelt with products, without waiting for that which might still come in; likewise the ship De Geregtigheijd as soon as it shall be fully laden with rice; it being also intended that with the first-mentioned vessel transport to Batavia be granted to the one who, on account of his manifold corruptions consisting of a sort of lameness and

From Java's East Coast, 23 June in the year 1753. by our released Ensign Louis Honoré de Combes, together with Pangeran Soeria Cossoema, who had been arrested for a time at Tagal, while having the honor of the second mentioned keel to present herewith to Your Right Excellencies the report of the commissioners regarding that unloading, demonstrating that the 20 pieces of drum lines, upon examination, were found to be half, notwithstanding the crate in which they were partitioned off was in good condition: but on the other hand, the officers delivered short 9 lasts and 2340 1/3 lb. of wheat, 3 pieces of 3 and 4 lb. long shot, and 14 pieces of 4 lb. canister shot filled with lead, item 17 pieces of tin canisters of 2 and 1 1/2 lb., for which we respectfully request that the same may be charged to their pay accounts, and this government be relieved of the accounting thereof, in whose books we shall annually write off the war expenses, and through which it is incumbent to observe Your Right Excellencies' much respected order to ensure, when enveloping the letters to the High Indian Government, that they are enclosed in such a manner that their reopening can take place without damage or tearing of the envelope; the Resident of Rembang has already been sent the mold transmitted for a mud scow so as to prepare seven pieces thereof by tender as soon as possible, paying attention not so much to neat workmanship as to strong construction, and also to send forward to Your Right Excellencies, upon completion, the sloops built for Makassar and Ambon, just as we shall have the honor to do upon the next opportunity with all the silk reelers still living on this Coast, since there is no reason to the contrary to keep any of those people, and there are also Javanese here who understand the handling of that work just as well and even better than those subjects, regarding whose received wages and those still due, we have ordered the pay bookkeeper at this main and the subordinate office of Surakarta to draw up an accurate memorandum in order to be able to settle with them at once, just as the Surabaya servants were reprimanded for their sloppiness, that they sent the papers from Makassar to Batavia on the ship Vreedesteijn merely packed in a gabba-gabba, without handing them over properly to the skipper, or even informing Your Right Excellencies in what manner or on what occasion those papers came into their hands, for which reason instruction has likewise been demanded from them, while we further take the liberty to assure Your Right Excellencies in all respect that regarding the levying and increased toll up to six percent above that hitherto paid on wax, trepang, edible bird's nests and other goods in demand in China, which might be exported from here to Palembang, Banjarmasin, or Pasir, we shall strictly adhere to the venerated tenor of your Extract Resolution of 15 May past, and likewise, in case vessels should come here to trade that had departed directly from Bangka, Belitung, or Johor, according to the notice issued by Your Right Excellencies under the predicted date against all navigation and trade from those places to Batavia, this Coast, and Makassar. On this occasion we further take the liberty to offer herewith to Your Right Excellencies a petition from the Resident of Japara, Kloekhoff, containing a request to be exempted, through your esteemed favor, from the sugar imposed upon him as compensation, delivered short by the officers of the ships 't Hof d'Uno, D'Erffprins, and 's Heeren Arendskerk at the Indian capital, to the amount of 18137 lb., whereupon we pray that Your Right Excellencies, for the reasons alleged therein, may be pleased to take a gracious reflection, and also honor us with your high license to allow to pass for write-off in the Tagal trade books the cost of such goods and cash to the amount of 8973 guilders, 2 stivers, and 8 pence, which on the date of 24 March of the past year were lost in the warehouses there due to the invasion of the chief rebel Mangkubumi in the district of Pekalongan, as appears from the report of the second signatory, reinforced by an attestation from the warehouse master Phillip Bregart, which documents we have the honor to present herewith to Your Right Excellencies, and furthermore to report in all respect that since the first signatory is to undertake tomorrow the march to the uplands for the eradication of the rovers, the management of domestic or common affairs is deferred to the entire Council, and that of urgent matters to the second and third signatories, following the example of the past year to be found in our resolution of 17 September, which arrangement we trust will merit the honored approval of Your Right Excellencies, of whom for the rest we have the honor to subscribe ourselves with the utmost veneration in all loyalty and submission, below was written, Your Right Excellencies' most humble, very obedient and dutiful servants, was signed, J. The ship Dieshoek, having arrived at this roadstead on the 13th of August, would in accordance with Your High Noble Lordships' highly respected orders have been laden with rice, but its skipper declared that his vessel was so leaky, both on the outside and within its decks, that they did not even have a dry place for their rations, and therefore it was impossible for him to take on a cargo of rice or perishable goods on his account. Therefore, I was obliged to provide the aforementioned vessel solely with timber, with which it is entirely laden, consisting of 675 pieces of beams, namely: 245 pieces of beams of 20 feet in length, and 430 ditto of 22 feet in length, which, along with the shipping charges, amount to ƒ2556:18:8 according to the bill of lading and invoices; to which is attached an expense account for rice, arrack, and refreshments supplied for half a month's ordinary ration, as their provisions had ended on the first of this month, thus amounting to a sum of ƒ157:7:-, for the write-off of which I request Your High Noble Lordships' most favorable authorization. From Java's East Coast the 26th of September 1753. — Batavia To as before mentioned The ship Cattendijk, which arrived here at the roads on the 4th of this month from the principal place of the Indies, whose captain lieutenant requested a cargo of rice, and because I had such in stock, I immediately made a beginning with the lading of said vessel, just as subsequently on the 18th of the same month, when this vessel already had over 200 lasts of rice in her, we received the Company's instruction from the Samarang government stating that Your High Nobilities' high venerated order was that the above-mentioned ship for the Government of Ceylon was to be laden with 150 pieces of heavy long beams and 300 lasts of rice, which latter mentioned could only take effect now, firstly because the repeatedly mentioned vessel had already taken in so much rice and also secondly because I did not have in stock here such large and long timbers, therefore I have taken the liberty, under prayer and hope of Your High Nobilities' favorable interpretation and approval, to fully lade the repeatedly mentioned vessel with rice and products of the country alone, namely with 350 lasts of new rice. 479¾ picols white powder sugar 74 bales of cotton yarns, sorted. 16 picols round pepper. 52 ditto tail ditto and 9 ditto long ditto, whose cargo together with the shipment expenses incurred thereon amounts to ƒ 20180: 12: 8: according to the bill of lading and invoice accompanying this, with which lies an expense account for refreshments and paid daily wages to caulkers who caulked the repeatedly mentioned vessel, amounting together to ƒ114: —: —: for the write-off of which we humbly request Your High Nobilities' highly honored authorization according to the register. Per the snow the aforementioned Pangerang Soeria Coesoema, mentioned in the previous very humble missive of 23 June, with his retinue consisting of 5 persons, as well as the ensign Louis Honore de Combes, bookkeeper Jacobus van Nes, sergeant Jan Simon, and gunner Godlieb Diederik Donklaar, all of whom, because of their heavy corruptions, are unable to perform the Company's service, and are therefore beseeching the favorable benevolence of Your High Nobilities in order to be allowed to repatriate. Lastly, we take the liberty respectfully to present to Your High Nobilities 2 petitions: the first from the ensign Johannes de Beer, containing a request to be allowed to repatriate, and the second from the sergeant Anthonij Ros, to be granted the status of free burgher by the favor of Your High Nobilities. With Captain Dain Assin and Intje Mida, I have received, along with some trimmings, rose water, etc., Your Right Honourables' honoured letter, for whose polite conveyance as well as for the gift we express our bounden thanks, with the sincere assurance that as yet Pangerang Mancoeboemi has made no request to us for assistance, which he also has not to expect, as we have firmly decided to continue living with the Company in an unwavering harmony, all the more because there is by no means yet erased from our hearts the love and affection which the Honourable Company showed to our brother Raden Jojorana, by having him safely escorted hither at the time or just recently during the Madurese war. We would also gladly demonstrate our sincerity substantially by complying with Your Right Honourables' intention for some auxiliary troops, but the war between us and the villages of Soekawadij prevents us from doing so. Batavia To the same as mentioned before Your Right Honourables' most humble servant has deemed it his utmost duty not only respectfully to communicate his safe arrival at Samarang, having been the 14th of this month (having been detained thus long both by illness and the performance of the most holy divine service at Cheribon, Tagal, Paccalongang), but also, on the one hand, cordially to testify his special high esteem, deepest respect, and most tender love, even with this humble missive; as well as, on the other hand, gratefully to acknowledge his utmost obligation for the most precious favor, both in general and especially regarding their call from Java's North-East Coast, undeservedly bestowed upon his humble person; while his heartfelt and fervent prayer is solely that he may further be an object of Your Right Honourables' in all respects most necessary favor and affection for his further prosperity and true contentment in these Eastern regions, and may thus ever gloriously remain so. I have the honor to communicate to Your Right Honorables that the former prisoner Anachoda Woodjoe, a Mandarese, has passed away, and I still have one of his accomplices in custody.
