The ship Osdorp is now departing for Your High Honorable Grand Worships, laden with 444 1/3 picols of areca and 29,600 pieces of pipe staves, which, together with the expenses thereon, according to the bill of lading and invoice, amount to a sum of ƒ 4,704:12:—. Wherewith, calling myself with all high esteem and deep respect, High Honorable, Far-Ruling Lord and Noble Lords, Your High Honorable Grand Worships' humble and lowly servant, was signed, S. I await with anxiety the long-promised pantchiallangs, as the pirates are beginning to act vigorously, and have even almost captured one of the prau mayangs laden with areca. To the same as mentioned before. On the 19th of April last, I received via Tagal the highly honored authorization from Your High Honorable Grand Worships, dated the 9th beforehand, for the collection of 1,000 coyangs of rice, in which I shall not fail to do my utmost duty. I would have wished to have known this a month earlier. And regarding the price, I cannot negotiate for less than 20 rixdollars, exclusive of the leaseholder's dues, with which I have enough to settle; and he is still not content with his 2 rixdollars per last. He made it known to me that when the rice was higher in price, he also received more for export, and that the Company was not withholding trade like private individuals, whereby he again enjoyed lease moneys; and he comes forward with all kinds of pretexts because I have forbidden the export. And when he has to furnish his lease moneys, I must wait three to four times beyond the due date, receiving them in several installments. Regarding the leaseholder at Indramayu, Tankiongko, and his guarantors: one is dead, the other absent, and his own person is nothing special. Thus, I have obtained two other guarantors in his place, namely the local resident Lieutenant Ian Inlo and executor of estates Dim Boro, as can be seen from the accompanying copy of the bail bond. I am not in a position to do this, because it is brought here as merchandise from Samarang, Sumanap, Sourabaya, etc., and I have more difficulty obtaining it than the rice itself. I would not have dumped the coffee loose into the hold if sacks had been obtainable and there had been an advantage in it. A gift received from the King of Bantam, as well as by the Sultans, and from Tabacchus Wasse. There also appeared in that meeting the Tommogon Casta Diradja, who requested his discharge, because he was old and could no longer perform the duties of Tommogon, which was granted to him; and upon nomination before his Sultan, there was appointed in his place the Demang Raxa Praja, under the name of Raxa Diradja, who is an active man in the Honorable Company's interests, which I hope will meet with Your Right Honourable Grand Respected's approval. Furthermore, this letter is accompanied by two Resolutions, namely one of the 23rd of May, and one of the 21st of this month, together with a report of the investigation concerning the contentious dispute over a small piece of land and its negorij named Passantreen, between the Sultan Cheribon and Sultan Anom; wherefore Their Highnesses request Your Right Honourable Grand Respected's verdict, as the one appeals against the other, and as far as it has been reported to me, it should belong to Sultan Anom, it being also very well known from earlier times that Sultan Cheribon employs all kinds of financial tricks to acquire lands for himself that are dubious and disputed. Herewith I further request Your Right Honourable Grand Respected for a ship to collect the 200 Lasten of rice that are ready at Indramajoe, because the warehouses are made of bamboo. Their Highnesses have also asked me to pay their compliments to Your Right Honourable to obtain their usual annual gift, as their New Year is at hand. Which is caused by the profits broadly shown here and the increase thereof, notwithstanding the expenses this year exceed those of the past year, which arises from the following reasons: Board money and rations are higher because the garrison of this year was stronger than in the past year. Garrison expenses are lower because in this year the lamp oil was exceptionally cheap, as well as the lower write-offs compared to those made in the past year. Hospital expenses are higher, because in this year Cape wine was provided to the sick, and not last year. Ship expenses are higher, this arises from the large though necessary provisions made to the ships Roseburg, Duijnenburg, and Straalen, which wintered here. After first having taken the honour, at the beginning of this year, of wishing that God's bountiful blessing in the same, and for a long length of days to come, may rest ceaselessly upon Your Right Honours' precious persons, illustrious families, and eminent offices. We accompany this, according to former custom, with a note of the vessels, along with their cargoes, which have arrived and departed during the past year from Java's Northeast Coast and Cheribon, as well as Belitung. Likewise, also three expense accounts: one from the ship Hartekamp amounting to 48 florins; one ditto from the Admiraal de Ruijter amounting to 117 florins and 12 stuivers; and one from the sloop De Pepertuin of 1241 florins, 12 stuivers, and 8 pence; amounting together to 289 florins, 24 stuivers, and 8 pence; of which we most respectfully request permission to make a write-off. While we cannot refrain from presenting a copy of the letter written hither by the captain of the last-mentioned vessel, containing a very earnest entreaty for some fresh provisions on account of the multitude of his sick. Per the said vessel De Pepertuin, the outgoing administrator and elected Bookkeeper-General, the Honourable Jacob van Rijn, departs to Your Right Honours, after having first properly transferred the Company's effects to his successor, among which, since upon closer examination it was found that the fire engine with its hoses is almost completely unserviceable, we respectfully request to be provided with another at the first opportunity. Per the same little vessel, in hopes of a favourable reception, we have also granted their discharge to Batavia to the assistants Jan Pieter Warnier and Johan Philip Riek, both because they have strongly insisted on it, and because due to the reduced workload here, although they have otherwise performed their service satisfactorily, they can well be spared. However, as Woitkensdorp had sailed on through that night, shipmaster Kramer returned in vain two days later, and has since not only delivered the aforementioned goods here, but also exchanged an unserviceable anchor, and, upon the given declaration of a ditto rope and lack of rice, was provided with the required items and drinking water, as well as some refreshments for his sick; after which he received his clearance the morning before yesterday, though he still lies in sight of this roadstead. From Bantam, 5 February 1743. — From Bantam, 5 February 1753. report that the same extends North-East and South-West, estimated at 3 miles in length; within, or on the North-West side, is a small bay or basin, where five to six ships can lie at anchor in fifteen and sixteen fathoms, being sheltered from almost all winds; into the same two rivers discharge, of which the westernmost, at high tide, is so wide at the mouth that quite a number of large vessels can enter it, but going a quarter of a mile higher, where three to four native houses stood and were inhabited by five to six natives, it became narrower and drier, and a few rods further begins the fresh water, which comes running down from above over the rocks, but I could find no suitable location there for a settlement, because the ground was very poor there, and so much timber and wilderness that without excessive costs one could not only make no level ground, but it would not even be large enough, and would have to fall out of all sight; west of this river it is inaccessible all the way to the point; but 1/4 mile east of the same I discovered the other small watercourse, which also according to the statement of the native provides good water throughout the entire year, and its course is also like that of the first-mentioned, where a fine place presented itself, having its view directly upon the entrance of the Bay of Lampong, and which, with a small clearing of coconut and other trees, is deemed capable of holding ground with a garrison; having taken further inspection throughout the entire small bay, there being nowhere a more suitable location, I have therefore taken post here, had the ground cleared into a glacis, the wilderness cut down and burned, and in the meantime erected the bamboo houses again, until such time as I may have the fortune to receive your High Excellencies' highly esteemed orders. The South-East side of this island, or rather the outer side, is unapproachable, being deep and rocky with steeply descending mountains.
