Register of all such letters and other papers as are sent today per the ship Ruijskensteijn, via the Cochin route towards Batavia, consigned to His High Honour, the Right Honourable, Right Worshipful Jacob Mossel, Governor-General, together with the Honourable Council of the Dutch East Indies. The Register: Number 1: An original letter of today's date respectfully addressed by the Resident Jacob van Schoonderwoert to the dignitaries named in the heading of this document. Number 2: A duplicate letter dated the 20th of September of the past year, sent in all submissiveness per the ship Admiraal Tromp to their aforementioned High Honours by the former provisional residents Anthonij van der Wall and Alexander Dideriksz. Number 3: An original deed in the form of a resolution concerning the introduction of His High Honour, the Right Honourable, Right Worshipful Jacob Mossel as Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, dated the 8th of January of this year. Number 4: An original requisition for such merchandise and other necessities as are required in all submissiveness for this trading post for the year 1753/1754, dated today, annexed with a catalogue of medicines. Number 5: A copy of an outgoing Ceylon letter addressed by the Resident to the Honourable Governor and Council there under today's date. Number 6: A copy of an outgoing Coromandel letter written by the same to the Honourable Governor and Council there, dated the 18th of December of the past year. Number 7: A copy of an outgoing Surat letter written by the same to the Director and Council there, dated the 17th of December last. Number 8: A copy of an outgoing Malabar letter written by the same to the Commander and Council there, dated today. Number 14: Four copies of reports, namely: One concerning the condition of the cargo unloaded from the ship Ruijskensteijn regarding the small chests of spices delivered, dated the 15th of November and first of December last. The last dispatch from here, the duplicate of which accompanies this, was sent per the Admiraal Tromp on the 20th of September of the past year. Since then, with the bearer of this, after a voyage of three months and five days, and having touched at Mascatta in passing as well to take in water as to trade some Company wares, though remaining there only three days, having arrived here in very good condition on the 9th of November past, the Bookkeeper Anthonij van der Wall informed me on the same day that the trading post was crammed with people who with wife, children, and baggage had sought safety there, on account of the raid a few days before by a troop of Larik people, who out of hostility against Duke Nessier Chan had unexpectedly arrived here and robbed well over sixty thousand rupees from the Banyan merchants and other poor residents; this however did not prevent me from setting foot ashore the next day and after the trading post was again quickly cleared, and to take possession of the same and of the further effects of the Honorable Company, as well as to make all possible haste for unloading; but before treating of what concerns that vessel, I will, with regard to the letter of the 28th of July of the past year brought with me, record that I shall keep constantly before my eyes all the highly valued orders contained therein as a fixed rule and guideline, just as then on the 8th of January last the public presentation of His High Nobility, The High Noble, Valiant, Most Honorable Lord, Jacob Mossel, under taking of the oath of loyalty and obedience to the same, was executed in such manner as a drawn up act in the form of a resolution shows.

Resolution will serve to show to your High Excellencies' satisfaction, and to which I request permission to refer myself. While three days thereafter that joy was changed into mourning garments over the untimely passing of His late Serene Highness, the Lord Prince of Orange and Nassau, Hereditary Stadtholder, Captain and Admiral General of the Union, as well as Supreme Governor General and Supreme Commander of the East India Company, and Furthermore, on behalf of the Commonwealth, the fiftieth penny of everyone's possessions was collected, consisting of: 49 pieces double silver nadries rupees, or m=s 490:— 33 single 165:— 109 willienamends or three mam: pieces 327:— 1 single silver mamoedie 1:— Total man=s 983:— which are forwarded separately herewith. However, concerning your High Excellencies' honored order regarding a type of dye named Macnap, one will not be able to judge it until the sample thereof has been received. We gladly acknowledge that your Honors, due to both the decay of trade and the poor household management of the servants in this realm, have indeed employed all means to restore and redress one thing and another, though with not the least bit of success, which has also prompted us to write to your Honors and give the order to decamp from here entirely; but after seeing your Honors' plan to separate Bassoura from Gamron, establishing it as a residency depending directly upon Batavia, so as no longer to see its profits absorbed by the burdens of Gamron, and to make Gamron also into a residency, which thereby having to exist on its own, and not being able to boast of profits obtained from elsewhere, began to succumb under its burdens; and having taken into consideration the thoughts of the Resident of Schoonderwoert, both in regard to the reduction of the mercantile and the domestic establishments as well as the servants, with everything further belonging thereto: we have wished to suspend our previously taken decision to abandon this realm entirely until we should have received your Honors' considerations on this matter. These having now arrived and been weighed, we have been persuaded to try it once more on that footing, the more so because your Honors, toward the close of your letter of the 31st of December 1749 on this matter, say that you have received word from the Gamron ministers that trade there had suddenly revived to such an extent that the entire stock of spices and almost all other merchandise had been disposed of, with a net profit of f12637:1:8; and also that because the road between Gamron and Kerman had been opened again, the servants had reason to hope that they would be in a position to fulfill the homeland demand for Kerman wool. And since this seems to be virtually the only profitable article that one can send back from here in return, it is above all necessary that, instead of the deceased Awanees, another capable and faithful factor be employed for its purchase, in order that we are not outwitted herein by the English; while we in the meantime hope that the trial your Honors have made by sending some fine spices for sale to Kerman (which place is said to be very suitable for that purpose), both to favor thereby the collection of wool and to find a means whereby the costs of that commission could be made good, will fulfill the purpose. That this office formerly having had to succumb under its heavy burdens is to be attributed to virtually nothing other than the excessive establishment that one had here with a considerable number of servants and other unnecessary matters, without one being able to accomplish anything more with them than is done at present, so that if only a small trade takes place here, now that the expenses do not amount to a quarter as much, the Honorable Company will always move forward, and in any case the spices alone can easily make good the expenses; besides which, I do not doubt whether trade, if the realm is once brought to peace, will revive again as in days of old. Regarding the Kerman wool, I shall not fail to exert all my efforts to obtain it, and have already employed two persons again for that trade, who departed thither a few days ago with some spices.

Reasons why the wine could not be shipped. Departure of the ships with our last humble letters of the 28th of the just passed month of October, which were delivered for dispatch to your Right Honourable, Most Respectable Sirs to the officers of the ships Woitkensdorp and Orangezaal, which due to contrary winds were unable to continue their voyage from here before yesterday; the bearer of this, the ship De Gouverneur Generaal, is discharged from here as of this date, and with it, as shown by the bill of lading and invoice accompanying this, one hundred and forty leagers of Cape white wine are sent to Batavia, while it is still somewhat too early to be able to ship the red wine at present with any peace of mind; this will therefore, under the esteemed favour of your Right Honourable, Most Respectable Sirs, have to remain postponed until the next opportunity by ship, when we shall not fail to send over as much thereof as will be possible to obtain, although the red wine here this year has generally failed to such an extent that your Right Honourable, Most Respectable Sirs' latest demand for the same will, to our regret, far from be able to be met. Because of the decease of the second surgeon and third surgeon of this vessel lying in the roads, the ship Oranjezaal, and as the chief surgeon Johan Christiaan Rigter, having arrived here from the fatherland on the aforementioned hooker Hector, was not required on it, since such vessels customary to this place sail only with an under-surgeon or third surgeon, we have taken the liberty to transfer the said Johan Christiaan Rigter to the aforementioned ship Oranjezaal to perform his duties there as second surgeon. Return ships. having arrived here with [illegible] dead and ten sick, and now being found to be fully capable of continuing its further voyage to Batavia, the same is therefore discharged from this place under cover of this letter on today's date, and therewith shipped to Your Right Honorable, and sent from the produce of this land, the following, namely: 4 leagers of wine 86 lasts of wheat. As will further appear from the accompanying bill of lading and invoice made thereof, alongside which are sent in copy the deed of a gunner's mate made here on this ship Thorenvliet, as well as the letter which we had the honor to write to Your Right Honorable on the 6th of the past month of November, with the ship Den Gouverneur Generaal which departed from here on the 9th thereafter. And whereas the standing grain crop in the field, now ripening, appears very favorable, it is therefore hoped that Your Right Honorable may be provided with a good quantity thereof from here in the beginning of the coming year. Whole From Cape of Good Hope the 28:th decemb:r 1752. arrived ship the Batavier, so that in this place there have been shipped one with the dispatching of the same, because of the heavy southeasterly winds, which while one was busy shipping wheat therein for Batavia, blew for several consecutive days, having been much set back, that vessel on that account could not be mustered and dismissed before today, that besides the, with which keel also on this date from here to Batavia is sent forward the on the 10:th of this aforementioned month of December here arrived only with one sick person Ship De Batavier, which on the 4:th of August of this year put to sea from before Rammekens and from the 21:st to the 26:th of the following month of September lay at the island of S:t Iago; there being shipped in these two now departing ships for Your Right Honorable Worships the following from the products of this country, as: In Witsburg 4 Leaguers Cape wine 40 Lasts Wheat 2 do Grey Peas 6: do White do In the Batavier 16 Leaguers ordinary Cape wine 11 do Red Stomach do 9 do do Steen do 10 do White do do 8 half-aams Pontac as this further appears from the bill of lading invoice made thereof and accompanying this. Besides which, we also, in compliance with the further orders, have caused to be placed to the account of the Warehouse Master here, Christoffel Brand, as having had the care thereof, the short weight of 11 7/8 per cent found on the 4000 lb bar copper recently sent from here to Batavia with the ship Nieuw Nieuwerkerk, amounting to f 306: 9: 8. But since the aforesaid Warehouse Master, offering to confirm this under oath if necessary, has testified that the same copper was weighed out by him to the satisfaction of the officers of the said ship Nieuw Nieuwerkerk here at this place, as they have also acknowledged by the bill of lading invoice signed by them and sent over with their vessel; and furthermore that the chests in which that metal was shipped from here were good and well secured, as the one and the other is further confirmed by the sworn declaration accompanying this, granted by the delegates who attended at the weighing and shipping of that copper, we cannot consequently refrain from respectfully requesting Your Right Honorable Worships From Cape of Good Hope the 28:th xber: 1752. Of which return ships two, namely de Naarstigheit and Giesenburg, having already departed from here for the Netherlands on the 16th of the said month of February, the six others, namely Nieuw Vijvervreugd, Oude Carspel, de Waakzaamheijt, Nieuw Nieuwerkerk, Luxemburg, and Wiltrijk, are likewise dispatched thither on the date hereof under the flag of Commander Marten Haringman from this place. Now, concerning the goods and provisions which through the kindness of Your Right Honourable Worships were shipped for this Government in the previously cited ship Lugtenburg, the same have been delivered here; except for the following which was brought short, damaged, or defective thereon, namely: 11 lb. fine Ceylon cinnamon found short on 160 lb., being 6 7/8 percent. 22,694 lb. rice on 310,000 lb. or 100 coyangs of 3,100 lb., being 7 1/3 percent. 1,979 lb. coffee beans received too little on 20,000 lb., being 9 3/10 percent. 1,893 pieces floor tiles of 16 inches brought broken on 4,000 pieces, being 47 1/3 percent. 3,990 cans arrack delivered short on 18,000 cans, as: 3,278 cans on 20 leagers; and 720 ditto or two entire leagers that leaked out empty, being together 22 1/5 percent. together with some pieces of linen mentioned on the specification attached hereto, which were received weathered or stained. Of which goods the shortage on the cinnamon, the coffee beans, as well as the broken tiles, together with the ullage on the arrack and the shortage caused by the leaking empty of the two aforementioned leagers, having been passed and written off in the trade books of this Government, on condition that by the skipper and chief mate of the previously cited ship Lugtenburg, regarding the said arrack, it should be declared under oath, as was delivered by the same.
