From Cape of Good Hope, the 1st of March 1753. the same was also confirmed here, namely that they have thereby benefited themselves neither directly nor indirectly. Furthermore, regarding the rice delivered short, it was deemed best that the said ship's officers, in conformity with the order, shall be charged for this on their payroll accounts at the purchase price, to wit: the skipper for three-fourths, or ƒ748:18, and the chief mate for one-fourth, or ƒ249:13, making together ƒ998:11. Meanwhile, regarding the delivered stained and damaged linen, taking into consideration that the packages thereof were externally in good condition and that no defects could be detected on them, it was further judged best that the same shall be sold publicly or used for the service of the Honorable Company, whichever will be most advantageous, as Your Excellencies and Right Worships, if you please, will be able to see in more detail from the Resolution taken here at this Castle on the 27th of the past month of February and enclosed herewith in copy. This is accompanied by two packets with the secret signal flags that will be flown in the coming year 1754 both from the Lion's Head and Rump as well as in Simons Bay for the security of the ships that will then arrive at this place, of which two packets one is addressed to Your Excellencies and Right Worships and the other to the Government of the Island of Ceylon, to which we respectfully request that the same may be forwarded at a suitable opportunity. Enclosed herewith also goes the bill of lading and invoice of the goods shipped here on the bearer of this, consisting of the following: 209 lasts of wheat 4 leagers of red Steen wine 4 aams of red Constantia wine in cases marked from No. 1 to 4 71 lb of fine garden seeds 31 lb of coarse ditto 78 lb of dried apples 50 lb of Saffron pears 10 jars of candied mulberries, weighing together 64 lb 1/2 mud of grey peas 1/4 mud of yellow ditto 1 1/8 mud of sugar peas 1/2 mud of white beans 1/2 mud of farmers' beans 200 lb of mustard seed 44,800 pieces of soft-shell almonds 56,200 pieces of hard-shell almonds 100 pieces of chamois-leather skins Furthermore, we have the honor to present herewith to Your Excellencies and Right Worships the requisition of necessities for this government for the coming year 1754, for the complete fulfillment of which we also take the liberty hereby to request. Furthermore, on the 22nd of the so frequently mentioned month of February, the outward-bound ship Vlietlust safely arrived here at the roads with 9 dead and 40 sick, which departed on the 3rd of October of the past year from Texel in the company of the ships De Drie Papegaaien, Wimmenum, De Drie Heuvelen, and Hageveld, and lay with the first three mentioned from the 8th until the 20th of the same month of October in Portsmouth, from which it subsequently separated on the 30th thereafter at the North Latitude of 11 degrees. For this reason, those vessels, as well as Ouwerkerk and Delft, which were seen near the Line by the officers of that ship Vlietlust, are expected here at any moment. Furthermore, on the dates noted alongside, the following foreign nation ships have also been present at this place, namely: 19 January: Le Lis, a French ship that, having departed on the 18th of October last under the command of Captain de Bear with 20 pieces of ordnance and 500 hands from Port L'Orient, continued its voyage from here to Pondicherry on the 20th of February last. 28 ditto: Princess Wilhelmina Carolina, a Danish ship commanded by Captain Michael Jacobsen Ronne, carrying 24 pieces of cannon.

From Cape of Good Hope, the 1st of March 1743. cannon and 130 heads, which vessel, having been dispatched from Tranquebar on the 30th of the said month of October, undertook the voyage from here to Copenhagen on the 24th of the mentioned month of February. 31 January, the Stretham, English ship of which Charles Majon is captain, equipped with 30 pieces of cannon and manned with 99 heads, this hull having sailed on the 29th of November last from Bombay, and on the 14th of the same month of February proceeded from this place to London. 4 February, The Dragon, English ship, Captain Henry Kent, carrying 18 pieces of cannon and 65 heads; Ditto ditto, commanded by the ditto Swallow, Captain Johan Bell, manned with 38 heads and provided with 16 pieces of ordnance, these two hulls having departed from London in October and November last, and sailed on the 23rd of February from here to go barter for slaves on Madagascar for Madras. 13: Le Puisieux, Captain de Sanquinet, carrying 20 pieces of cannon and 350 heads. 17. Ditto, L Auguste, Captain Balliere Christi, manned with 370 heads and provided with 22 pieces of ordnance, which both ships are destined for China. 22 February: Le Maurepas, Captain La Vigne Brousson, whereon are 280 seafarers, intending for Pondicherry. 24 February: Le Duc de Chartres, Captain Bouvet, mounted with pieces of cannon, manned with 364 heads, likewise going to China. These four ships having put to sea likewise from Port L'Orient on the 18th and 19th of October of the preceding year. Since the bowsprit of the often-cited return ship Wiltrijk, after one had advanced that far with drafting this, was found upon inspection to be rotten, broken, and irreparable, it will, for that reason and because one cannot finish preparing a new bowsprit for that hull so quickly, not be able to depart with the other five return ships, but must remain lying here until ordnance From Cape of Good Hope, the 1st of March 1743. Extract of the resolution taken here under the 27th of February last, containing the disposition regarding the shortage and broken goods on the cargo of the provision ship Lugtenburg, with there also being attached to this extract a certain copy of a judicial minute of the 1st of this month, showing that the skipper Hendrik Swart and his chief mate Jan de Jager confirmed under solemn oath that they did not benefit directly or indirectly from the missing arrack. Authentic copy of the declaration of the ordinary commissioners here, from which it appears which linens, among those brought here with the above-mentioned ship Lugtenburg, were received stained and weathered. Meanwhile, as it has appeared to us from the extracted letter also received, addressed under the aforementioned date of 6 October to your Right Honourable Lordships, that it is the desire of the highly respected Gentlemen Seventeen that on all occasions from this place, copies of the cargos of all respective return ships arriving here shall be sent to their Right Honourable Lordships, we therefore hope that your Right Honourable Lordships will be so good as to order the Honourable Company's ministers in Bengal and China successively to send to us the original short invoices of the respective return ships dispatched from there, as is done from your Right Honourable Lordships' principal place and Ceylon, in order that we may thereby be enabled dutifully to fulfill the esteemed commands of the lords and masters on this matter. Dispatch of the bearers: Wimmenum, De Drie Papegaijen... Of the outward-bound ships mentioned in our aforementioned humble letter of the 10th of this month, namely Wimmenum, De Drie Papegaijen, Delft, Pijlsweerd, Ouwerkerk, and De Vreede, the four first mentioned, having now been brought into a state to continue their voyage, are dispatched from here today for Batavia under escort of this letter; the two last mentioned could not be dispatched together with them, since Ouwerkerk brought many goods for this Government which they are still busy unloading from her, and for De Vreede some new spars had to be prepared in place of those that were broken on the voyage hither. Upon completion of each of these matters, those two keels, as well as the other four ships still present, will immediately be dispatched to Batavia as well; likewise, the return ship De Bevalligheijt, together with the ships Zuijderburg and 't Casteel van Tilburg destined for Ceylon and Bengal, will be sent forward to their respective destinations as soon as practicable. Furthermore, of the foreign ships mentioned in our preceding humble letters, the following have departed from here on the dates below, namely: 15 March: Clinton and Suffolk, English ships, both to Madras. Lesiloit, French ship, to Bengal. Le Duc de Parme, ditto, to Bengal. Wager, English ship, to London. Whereas, on the 16th of this month, there have again anchored here in these roads the following two English ships, namely: Boscawen, mounted with 22 pieces of cannon and 100 men. Wherewith we will also take the liberty to add that, of the one hundred pieces of sheaves that were loaded in Amsterdam into the aforesaid ship Diemen for the Island of Ceylon, no more than ninety-two pieces were found here, and thus eight pieces too few, the aforesaid 92 pieces have been transferred at this place into the previously mentioned ship Zuijderburg and forwarded therewith to the said Island; and furthermore that currently with the ship Cattendijk, crossing over from here to Batavia, is the sailor Jacobus Peereboom, who, as appears from the copy of the sentence enclosed herewith, was condemned by the Council of Justice of this Government to labor for board and clothes for two years on the Island of Edam in the ropewalk. April, which alongside our previous letter of the ultimate of March past was handed over for delivery to your honorable worships to the officers of the above-cited ships Getrouwigheijt, Ouwerkerk, Vreede, and Bloemendaal, there also arrived and landed here on the 3rd of that month, with 1 dead and 10 sick, the return ship Herstelder, which departed on the 30th of January of this year in company with the ships Crabbendijk and Kievitsheuvel, from which it became separated the following day, from Punto Gale; and now its voyage preparations have been brought so far along that it will be able to be dispatched from here around the 14th of this month in company with the aforementioned ship Jager as well as the ship destined for Bengal, Casteel van Tilburgh, while with the unloading of the goods laden for this government in the ship Hageveld, which alone remains in this roadstead, not much progress has yet been made owing to the extensive work that has been had with refitting and dispatching as many ships as have departed from this place both to the fatherland and to India in March past and within this month of April; work will now proceed on it with all force, and the vessel will be sent on from here as quickly as possible with as much wheat as it can take in. Since we recently had the honor to write to your Right Honorable Worships under the 11th of the just passed month of April with the ships Diemen, Cattendijk, 't Huijs te Manpadt and Rotterdam that departed from here on the 15th ditto, the unloading of the goods that were found for this place in the ship Hageveld and the loading into the same of others from the products of this country has proceeded so far that this vessel on the date hereof has been able to receive its dispatches and be dispatched from here with the following goods shipped out from here into it; namely: 13/37 Lasts of rope 4 Leggers of wine 148000 pieces of hard almonds 49000 pieces of crack almonds 13400 pieces of bitter almonds 305 lb of small raisins 85 lb of large raisins Above which also with this ship Hageveld are sent over 319 pieces of hand lead, which were loaded in the fatherland for your Right Honorable Worships' main place into the ship de Drie Heuvelen, which is due to depart shortly from here for Madagascar for the exchange of slaves; the whole appearing more fully from the accompanying bills of lading and invoices made thereof, which are accompanied by copies of the letters that we had the honor to write to the Lords Majors on the 14th and 20th of the said month of April, both with the ships de Jager and de Herstelder and with Crabbendijk which continued their voyage from here to the Netherlands on the 18th and 27th of the same month, there having on the 27th and 26th ditto prior also sailed forth from this place to Bengal and Ceylon the ships het Casteel van Tilburg and Breedenhoff. Also arrival at this Cape roadstead of six ships, and likewise of one in False Bay. Defects that were found on most of these keels. Whereas against that, on the dates below, the following Honorable Company's return ships have come to arrive again at this roadstead, to wit: D'Eendragt, with 1 dead and 4 sick, having departed from Canton together with the aforementioned ship de Jager, on 19th April. Ditto Kievitsheuvel, no dead, 9 sick, which put to sea from Galle with the ships de Herstelder and Crabbendijk also mentioned here before, on 23rd April. Ditto Elswout, with 7 dead, 4 sick. Ditto Vosmaar, with 9 dead, 4 sick. Ditto Langewijk, with 8 dead, 12 sick. Ditto Oosthuijzen, with 9 dead, 13 sick, on 30th ditto. As also on the 28th of the same month of April, with 7 deceased and 8 disabled, the consort of the four last mentioned vessels, the ship de Standvastigheijd, put into False Bay. All of which ships, except Vosmaar, have been found with various defects, one more, the other less, seeing that upon inspection made a long crack was found in the foremast of Oosthuijsen; furthermore the cutwater of d'Eendragt was loose and one of the knees under the half-deck broken, as well as the bowsprits of Kievitsheuvel and Elswout being also damaged, and besides this some leakage was found on the last mentioned keel as well as on d'Eendragt and Langewijk; with the repairing of which defects however so much speed has been and is being made that Kievietsheuvel alongside Vosmaar having been able to be dispatched from here to the Netherlands on the date hereof, the same will shortly be followed by the three others if no hindrances are encountered hereabouts or in the unloading of the goods laden in Oosthuijsen for this government by the rough weather that one has to expect daily at this time of the year; while it having also been complained by the officers of the aforesaid vessel de Standvastigheijd that a heavy leak had sprung on their vessel and that they had thereby been compelled to put into False Bay; it is hoped, although on account of the remoteness of that bay no formal report of the true condition of this ship de Standvastigheijd could as yet be received upon the inspection ordered in that regard, that the same will nonetheless be able to be repaired again there locally; when the same shall likewise take place with the utmost speed, and that vessel thereupon also be sent forth to its destination port. Receipt and answering of your Right Honorable Worships' esteemed letters of the 18th of January of this year. The aforesaid ships Elswout and Vosmaar having furthermore brought to our hands your Right Honorable Worships' very esteemed letters dated 18 January of this year, together with the enclosures belonging thereto, we shall have the honor to reply thereto: That since your Right Honorable Worships [illegible] this Government for the charged shortage of 11 7/8 per cent on the [illegible] sent from here last year with the ship Nieuw Nieuwerkerk, the warehouse master here, Christoffel Brand, having been charged with the same, has also been relieved thereof, but what was further ordered in this regard by your Right Honorable Worships, namely to debit the account of the skipper Jan de Weever for his portion in the reimbursement of the aforesaid shortage, could [illegible] be carried into effect, because the same had already departed from here long before the receipt of your Right Honorable Worships' abovementioned honored letters.

However, as the wine harvest this year has turned out very poorly, and therefore no Steen, Muscadel or Red wine is to be obtained at all, to our regret nothing thereof will be able to be shipped in the vessel Oosthuijsen in place of the goods previously mentioned as having been unloaded from it for this Government; having most respectfully thanked Your Right Honourable Worships for the sending hither of said goods, we shall furthermore act in accordance with what has been ordered and written regarding the ordered exiles, the Macassarese Dain Massoeroen and others; care shall further be taken that the orders of Your Right Honourable Worships regarding the providing of reports by the officers of the ships which, laden with goods for this Government, are to arrive here from India, concerning the unloading and reloading of such ships, are dutifully complied with. Under the 5th of May of this year, we recently had the honour to write to Your Right Honourable Great Respected Excellencies with the ship Hageveld, which put out to sea from this roadstead on the 8th following, together with the return ships Vosmaar and Kievietsheuvel. Subsequently, on the dates quoted alongside here, the undermentioned Company ships, of which mention was made in previous letters, also departed from here for the Netherlands, namely: The 19th of May: Elswout, d'Eendragt, Langewijk. The 28th ditto: Oosthuijsen. The 17th of June: Standvastigheijd. In respect of which ships, there falling now nothing else or further to say, than that the same were supplied at this place with all necessities, and that the defects which were found on some of those keels were properly repaired, as all this is further evidenced by the letters enclosed herewith in copy, which we had the honour to write to the Lords Principals with those ships under the 5th, 12th, 23rd, and 26th of May, as well as the 10th of June last. We shall therefore, after having added hereto that on the aforementioned 19th of May the fluyt De Drie Heuvelen likewise stood out from here for the island of Madagascar to trade for slaves for this Government, further let this serve From Cabo de Goede Hoop, the 17th of July 1753. Which having put to sea together from Texel on the 9th of March of this year, had to run into the Downs on the 12th following, from where the same continued their journey hither on the 5th of April following. The 3rd of July: Zaamslag, with 4 dead and 3 sick, which departed from Rammekens on the 1st of March, stayed in the Downs from the 2nd to the 7th following, and lay at Sao Tiago from the 16th to the 26th of April, at which place 26 men of its crew ran away. All of which keels, by the repairing of the defects found on them, and the fitting to the ship Amstelveen of a new bowsprit instead of that with which it came out, which upon inspection was found entirely unserviceable, have again been brought so far into a state of proceeding on their voyage, that the first three aforementioned, namely Haarlem, Amstelveen, and Noord-Nieuwland, could be dismissed from their berth on the date of this letter, and they shall be followed around the 24th of this month of July by Zaamslag, which has already partly unloaded its goods brought for this Government. Three of the Company's Return ships have been sighted, which are firmly believed to have been some of the ships that departed from here on 16 March last under the flag of Commander Marten Haringman. Furthermore, we have the honour to send Your Right Honourable Excellencies, with the bearer of this, from the produce of this land: 4 leagers of Cape wine 20 half-aams of red cabbage 5 half-aams of Savoy cabbage 5 half-aams of sour cabbage 6 lasts of rye As further appears from the bill of lading and invoice drawn up for this and accompanying this letter, which is accompanied by a copy of the letter from the Most Honourable Lords Seventeen dated 3 April of this year, which was brought to our honour with the aforementioned ships Persijnenburg and Rhoon; as well as the copy of the commissions of such two persons as have been promoted on this ship Baarsande, subject to the further approval of Your Right Honourable Excellencies. Having furthermore, because of the demise of the comforter of the sick, Ian van den Trans, who was stationed here, been obliged to take the liberty to take the one named Jan van Schaalen from the bearer of this and detain him here in order to perform his service at this place; in the hope that this will not be taken amiss by Your Right Honourable Excellencies. And that, because no lajate mill axles whatsoever are found in stock here for the service of the dehulling mill, and that the one currently running in the said mill, although recently repaired as well as possible, is in such poor condition that it will not be possible to keep it going much longer, we have therefore—considering that if the aforesaid mill axle becomes unusable, the dehulling of barley would have to come to a standstill during the time required to be provided with another from the fatherland, to no small inconvenience for the Company's passing crews through the lack of this necessary refreshment—found ourselves obliged most respectfully to request Your Right Honourable Excellencies that you may please have the goodness to send hither, at the first suitable opportunity, one or two lajate mill axles, each 26 feet long, 31 inches square thick at the head, and 27 inches at the rear, Rhenish measure, for the service of the aforesaid dehulling mill, as further indicated by the note regarding this submitted by the miller Abraham Schiette Kat, which accompanies this in copy. Original letter from the Noble Lord Governor Rijk Tulbagh together with the Council of this place, consigned to the aforementioned His High Nobility and the Noble Councillors aforesaid. Number 2.
