From Souratta, the 16th of April 1754 From Souratta, the 16th of April 1754. assistant teacher, and since there is currently none available, it was resolved to draft the first assistant teacher who shall be judged capable of it; it was also approved to have delivered to the said servants, both of the secretariat and of the trade office, all such books and papers as were formerly brought hither from Amedeabaad upon the breaking up of that office, and which will be necessary for their information, in order to be able to inspect the previous records in all occurrences. From Souratta, the 16th of April 1754 From Souratta, the 16th of April 1754 the detention of the vessels, it was thus resolved to send a large sufficient horrij of those yet to be built to Mandui, in order to be retained at that factory and used for the collection of the return goods scattered across diverse places, so that in the future the vessels of Souratta need not first fetch them here and there, but may find them gathered together and ready for shipment; in order also to prevent all frivolous pretexts regarding the provision of the packages and bales, it was deemed proper to order that at the first opportunity a parcel of ropes for packing shall be sent thither; as well as to have two new cotton presses made, and to send the same together with two press beams of value for each to the servants there, with orders to have all kapok bales pressed henceforth to the same height, namely of one cubit, and no more; there shall also be sent to them, for their information, not only an authentic copy of the amended general regulations concerning the write-offs of short weights and deficiencies of the 15th of August 1753, recently received from Batavia, but also for the assistant surgeon residing there, a copy of a missive addressed under the 30th of August 1749 by His late Serene Highness the Lord Prince of Orange Nassau of highly esteemed memory as Governor General of the Honorable Company to His late Excellency the Lord From Souratta, the 16th of April 1754 From Souratta, the 16th of April 1754 Governor General Baron van Imhof Governor General, together with all appendices pertaining thereto and sent hither from the capital, with the recommendation to employ all diligence to conduct oneself according to it as far as possible, since Their High Excellencies will by no means be satisfied with the poor excuse that nothing of the demanded matters can be found at that place. From Souratta, the 16th of April 1754 The last appointed chief surgeon of the hospital, Reijnier Bouschut, earning f36:- per month, having made known with the presentation of his latest deed of improvement that his running contract had expired in the passed month of November, and requested that he might be increased in salary as much as one could see fit; it was therefore decided to grant him, according to the regulations of Their High Excellencies, f40:– per month; provided he enters into a new three-year contract for it, beginning today, and to grant him a formal deed thereof. Since, by the growing garrison, the number of sick also increases from time to time to such an extent that the Ro/a 15 per month previously fixed for ordinary hospital expenses can no longer suffice, and it has already been complained of several times that however much thrift is observed in that respect, one nevertheless always falls far short, unless one wished to withhold from the patients that which is absolutely necessary for their recovery and cannot be spared; it was proposed, since the aforesaid complaints, after proper inquiry, were found to consist in truth, to grant such an increase in this matter as would correspond with reasonableness and the service of the Honorable Company, and consequently approved to permit the chief surgeon henceforth, instead of the above-mentioned Ro/a 15, to account for Ro/a 20:— for monthly hospital expenses, and to deliver an extract of this to the

From Souratta, the 16th of April 1754 the Cashier, as well as due to lack of space, to rent a house for the lodging of the head and assistant surgeon at Rs 10 per month, through which they will also obtain the required space for another hospital for the sick, the small rented house used up to now at Rs [illegible] being abandoned as much too small; which excess of Rs 5 has been recovered again on the rent of the house that is inhabited by the sergeant commandant, together with the adjutant and a part of the garrison, and which was negotiated by the Lord Commander for Rs 5 per month less than was paid for it previously, as this latter house cannot be dispensed with either. Also the following soldiers of this garrison, having largely served out their time, were increased from f9 to f11 per month, and, upon their request, were granted permission to receive the pay owed to them along with its surplus from the Honourable Company's treasury; namely Laurens Kouff of Kodenburg, and Jan Fredrik Gerlink of Wegelen, without surplus, Gustaf Philip Amberger of Neurenberg with one year surplus, as well as Coort Hendrik Hirchnier, of Cochim from f11 to 13 per month, likewise with one year surplus, all under a new three-year contract, commencing today, the aforesaid soldiers being, according to the testimony of the officer, among the best that one has here at the trading post, and having refused to enter into a new contract for any reason unless they were credited for the time they had overserved on their current contract; all pursuant to the order of of . Furthermore, it was agreed to have the soldiers Jan Christiaan Hildebrand and Jan Linde, the former as carpenter and joiner, and the latter as smith and locksmith, work for six months on trial at the Honourable Company's yard, in order to subsequently be employed as craftsmen with the lowest wage established for that purpose, as matters may warrant. Finally, the Lord Commander had recorded that the soldier Francis Velten, of Akeen, who was prosecuted and sentenced before the Council of Justice several months ago on suspicion of attempted desertion, had actually carried out his evil intention on the 19th of this month, and had deserted to the English; and that, on the other hand, an Englishman named John Tempel, from the County of Essex, being a gunner and pyrotechnician, had crossed over to us, and was taken into service as gunner's mate at f14 per month and stationed on the ship Bloemendaal. Finally, everyone may consider this as an order that must be carried out without delay, and wherein no one may show any negligence, since such is the Emperor's strict command. Likewise, the bookkeeper Anthon Sigfried Gothold Guse was appointed as provisional dispenser in place of the bookkeeper Pieter Ellinghuijsen, who goes as second to Amid-abaad; and it was resolved to order the cashier to recover the moneys advanced from the cash office to the last-mentioned, as well as to demand the required surety from the former. As soon as the anchor is weighed, you shall set your course according to the annexed authentic copy of the instructions, signed by the chief mate Pieter de Bakker, under No. 1. Having arrived at Mozambique, you shall deliver the letter handed to you, with our greetings, to the Governor, and take on board the remaining crew members of the Bredenhof. Next, departing from Mozambique, you shall set your course according to the above-mentioned paper under No. 2, and having arrived at the place where the ship Bredenhof was lost, according to the indications of [illegible], and in particular of the above-mentioned chief mate, diligently attempt to discover the cash thrown overboard. From Souratta, 16 April 1754 resolved to add the authentic extract of the aforementioned missive to the other incoming Mandvi letters, and to keep the original secret for reasons. On that occasion, and considering that it is of the utmost necessity and tolerates no delay to employ all possible means for the frustration of the pernicious designs of the aforementioned powerful sea-rover, who to all appearances will attempt anew to encounter the Mandvi fleet to take a chance on it, it was also thought fit, instead of the armed bark or vessel of defense requested from Their High Noble Liberties, for the construction of which they did grant permission by honored rescription of 5 December 1752, but by subsequent missive of 29th following, previously required a detailed report concerning the shape, size, armament, destination, costs, etc., of such a vessel, notwithstanding this requisition has not yet been complied with, to have built with the utmost speed a new narrow ship, somewhat larger than the Jonge Susanna, brigantine-style, with two masts and a ketch rig, capable of carrying 20 guns, namely 16 pieces four- and 4 pieces six-pounders, in order thus to have a vessel at hand that will be capable not only of powerfully assisting and protecting the other vessels of the Honorable Company on the Mandvi voyages, but also of accompanying individual Company ships on their return to Batavia as far as Cochin, and from there hither along the coast, 797 From Souratta, 16 April 1754 From Souratta, 16 April 1754 along the coast, and thus prevent their long, fruitless lying here in the roads waiting for company. Subsequently, note was taken that the small vessel Batavia, and the two war galwats, which latter having returned from their convoy to Bombaij without having encountered anything, had sailed down the river to collect the packs of linens lying ready at Brooschia according to the report received from there. The ship de Drie Papegayen being entirely unloaded, and as yet no cargo being at hand for it, also because of a delayed answer from the servants at Hetsmandus to the last letter written thither, it being uncertain whether the requested quantity of kapok could be obtained there for a reasonable price, it was considered whether that vessel should be dispatched to the main office merely on its ballast, or kept a little longer, in order meanwhile to look out for an opportunity so as not to let it depart empty; the latter proposal being unanimously adopted, the more so because there is currently no occasion to pass the Malabar coast in company, as no ship is at present lying here ready to sail to the south, and it is moreover entirely ill-advised to risk that vessel alone out of fear of the Angria pirate, who, through the peace made with the Portuguese, has become much bolder and more dreaded than he ever was before. Jacob Gallee of Alendorf, Pieter den Bens of Frankfwith on the Mayn, and Johan Hendrik Richer of Ramewijk, all soldiers of this garrison earning f9:- per month, having voluntarily offered to enter into a new contract, with a request to be increased in wages and to be favoured with the surplus thereof since the expiration of their first contract, it was agreed to advance each of them to f11: per month under a new three-year contract taking effect today, and to grant the first 18 months of surplus, as having served 20 months beyond his contracted time. Also proposed was the request made to the Director by one Alexandre de Saussure, of Lausanne in the Canton of Bern, having served with an English Swiss company at Bombaij as an officer à la suite, and having requested and obtained his discharge, to be allowed to cross over to Batavia as a volunteer on the first departing ship, intending to enter military service there because he could not be employed as an officer at this office; whereupon it was resolved to grant him free passage on the ship de Drie Pappegagen, to be lodged in the cabin. From From Souratta, the 16th of April 1754 taking a passport entails; I must bring to the knowledge of Your Right Honourable that from the ships or other vessels of Your Right Honourable, coming from Batavia or elsewhere and encountering my Armada, a pass has never been demanded; but that on the contrary it is required that for all vessels of Your Right Honourable departing from Souratta and entering within my Zeha, a passport must be demanded! But regarding that I have taken our sincere friendship into consideration, these 3 horrys were immediately released and permission granted to them to depart. When Your Right Honourable honours me with his commands, and I am at the same time glorified when Your Right Honourable shares his good health with me; what more shall I write? Whereupon it was understood to politely decline this demand by rescription, as it in no way accords with the friendly invitation formerly extended to the recently departed Director to send vessels for trade into the Bassein ports, offering all that the country could provide, as well as all conceivable assistance. The pay bookkeeper Jan Pieter Ohidem having been appointed by resolution of the 31st of December of last year to act as Fiscal ad interim, and the Fiscal Marten Huysvoorn being on the verge of his departure for Amed-abaad, the oath for that office was duly taken by the first-named, and to the provisionally appointed Dispenser Anthon Sigfried Godhold Guse by the same resolution, the oath was administered which must annually be taken by the minor administrators for the faithful management and administration of the Honourable Company's affairs, which he promised to uphold. And finally, that on the 11th of this month a soldier named Heere Folkers, and on the following day two more, namely Claas de Waal and Dominicus Klein, as well as on the 15th Francois de Ves, boatswain's mate, and Symen Hendriks, sailor, stationed on the ship the Drie Heuvelen, that is to say Pappegaijen, and on the 16th another sailor from the aforementioned vessel named Hans Cornelisz, had deserted to the English. This matter having thus been settled, a letter was read, written by the junior merchants Johannes Sanderus and Willem Blaankamer at Hets-boets on the 12th of January last, containing among other things that of the required 3000 bales of cotton, upon the arrival of the Honourable Company's vessels at Mandui, no more than about 500, besides the remainder of 175 bales and sometimes more, can be supplied, as in that entire realm not that much of the old crop can be obtained, and the new crop is not to be picked from the field until the beginning of March; the said Residents furthermore notifying the sale of some merchandise, besides those that are sent to Nauwa Negger, which were found good to be specified here, as well as those that were mentioned in a previous writing of the 13th of December of the past year, namely: the Sappanwood at 7 4¼ per 100 lb. on condition not to bring any more of this latter during this monsoon.
