As can be seen in the postscript of our respectful letter of the 24th of April of this year, concerning which we humbly ask your Excellencies that no mention should have been made thereof; and we further enclose herewith: A bill of lading and invoice of the cargo in the ship Scheijbeek at Rembang, amounting to - - ƒ3875:12: 8. With 3 expense accounts regarding what was supplied to both those keels: The first from Samarang, amounting to - - - - - - - ƒ 47: 8: 8. The 2nd from Rembang, amounting to - - ƒ 441: 8: 8. And the other from Tagal, amounting to - - ƒ 26: 88:—. Or together ƒ 515: 9:—. Which we humbly request permission to write off. To the timber-producing subaltern offices, we have ordered that your Excellencies' revered order of the 6th of May 1750—to supply every ship departing for Batavia with 20 fathoms of firewood—be observed somewhat better; and to the Rembang resident Coertsz, an extract was sent concerning his negligence, in that upon the dispatch of three sloops he made no mention to what end, for what use, or after what model they were built, so that he may employ somewhat greater accuracy regarding this in the future; likewise to the Oosthoek concerning the timber lying at Grissee, for the Great East, to be taken along by the ships departing thither, on penalty that the authorities thereof, in case of refusal, shall be debited to their account for the amount of the timber that they could have loaded. Concerning the cloth collection, in order to fulfill your Excellencies' purpose therein, an extract from your most respected missive of the 22nd of September last was likewise handed to Merchant Falk and the cloth-master Buse, in the expectation that they will redouble their zeal concerning that article of trade for the acquisition of 247. From Java's East Coast, the 21st of October 1754. a substantial consignment of that fabric, of a length of 26 instead of 22 ells, at the lowest price that can be stipulated. While with regard to domestic matters we take the liberty respectfully to submit to your Excellencies that at the session of the 4th of this month it was agreed, in order to put an end to the bad way of life of the invalids maintained in the home for the aged, who daily, to the annoyance and offense of everyone, roam the streets and markets in a deplorable state under the pretext of having to purchase their provisions, and to prevent other irregularities thereby, to establish a mess for them or to have a table kept by the internal regent in such manner as is described in the resolution of that date, to which, for the sake of brevity, we refer. The fortification works, which both at Japara and Damak are nearly completed according to their plans, present us at present with no material for description, except that which was stated in the journal of the first-signed, kept on the expedition against Pangeran Mankoeboemi, concerning the latter, on which your Excellencies' highly esteemed disposition is still awaited, there being at the same time cited the desolate state of the ramparts there and at the first-mentioned place, which for that reason the resident Kloekhoff was authorized to contract out for his office. The fort at Rembang was likewise, under the suretyship of the 1st warehouse master Duurveld and Secretary Fockens, contracted out to Resident Coertsz according to the project, which we hope will meet with your Excellencies' approval, and that it will also not be taken amiss of us that, on account of the bad condition of the foundations of the sawmill at Japara, inspected by the Lieutenant Engineer Mandre and Assistant van Laten and described in detail in the resolution of the 17th of the preceding month, we have proceeded

The Council of Justice, having had the defects and contradictions in the criminal proceedings resolved as far as possible to its satisfaction by the fiscal Master Petrus Stellingwerff regarding the burgher Dirk Reyncke, the Chinese Oey Watko, and the Javanese Wangsa Drio, has thought fit to send their documents back to Your Right Honourables, and meanwhile to temporarily transfer the first-named detainee, released on bail, back to the Company's chains until such time as Your Right Honourables shall have disposed over his petition sent along with the letter of 15 May past, while the execution of the death sentences mentioned in Your Right Honourables' highly respected letters of 15 and 27 August last must also for the present remain stayed, because the garrison is too weak to protect the administration of justice against an unexpected tumult, the European delinquents guilty of the crime of sodomy having all died in chains, the last on the very day of the receipt of the first-mentioned letter. Neuman, martheze in the margin Sourabaija the 15th of November 1754 Batavia to the aforementioned as before Because the closed pay accounts of twelve European military personnel who remained on Timor from among those sent thither in the past year were recently forwarded to us by the Surabaya officials, we take the liberty of sending the same herewith to Your Right Honours among various other pay documents alongside the general muster roll, with a humble request that the aforementioned accounts may be forwarded to that office, and that favorable consideration be given to the request of the gunner Jan Sas, stationed at Grissee, to be allowed to transfer to the burgher state in accordance with the accompanying petition. Furthermore, we humbly request that we may be authorized by Your Right Honours to send to Cheribon the lead coins which have appeared continuously in the Surabaya books for several years now and cannot be disposed of, yielding a sum of f 644:15:8, or otherwise to be honored with orders regarding how it shall please Your Right Honours that we proceed with them, as we have already requisitioned them from there. And finally, after a lapse of nearly six months, we also received from the outgoing resident of Grissee, Louis Pijll, the accompanying report or statement of the materials that will be required for the repair of the fully dismantled champan destined for Ternate, which has been standing on the dry there since the month of December 1751, as shown by the record in our resolution of the 16th of June of this year, and which runs quite high in expense to about f 330:—. Batavia. 271 From Java's East Coast, 14 December 1754 From Java's East Coast, 10 December 1754 and of the Huijs ten Duijne Batavia that it is feared and requested there the timber for debited back for some school books. to Hageveld aforesaid and the Naerstigheyd of which requested by the ship Hageveld for Batavia and pantjalling the officials in the eastern corner have informed us that the Huijs ten Duijne was dispatched back on the 30th of the past month with 200 lasts of rice; we hope, yet at the same time fear, that it will still make the voyage, and therefore request to be accommodated with another vessel in its place so that the timber required for Amboina may be dispatched in accordance with Your Right Honors' always respected orders contained in the letter of the 25th of that same month of November. Having meanwhile the honor to inform Your Right Honors that at our latest session on the 11th of this month we have seen fit to have Batavia debited back for the amount of 20 pieces of school books, called Proverbs of Solomon, which were overcharged on the invoice of the ship De Naerstigheijd, since according to the packing slip no more than 80 pieces were shipped in the chest of church and school books, nor received here, and yet this government was charged for 100 pieces. Accordingly, this is accompanied by its invoice of debit, together with the copy of the bills of lading and invoices of the cargo loaded onto the ship Hageveld at the Joana office amounting to f 1496:10:-, and of the chiampang built at Rembang for Batavia, amounting with the transported timber to f 3667:11; item, of the pantjalling sent to Grissee for the service of the Banda government, to be taken in tow by the first ship arriving there bound for that destination, to the amount of f 3060:7:-, together with the specification of the two last-mentioned vessels, and the expense accounts of what was supplied to the said vessel Hageveld at Joana to the amount of f 168:2:8, and to the Naarstigheijd at this place, f 183:9:8.
