An original sealed letter from the Resident Laven at Lagondi to Their High Nobles. No. 9. A packet of pay documents. Below was written: Bantam in Speelwijk, the 16th of April 1754. Was signed: I: Bruijdegam, sworn clerk. Batavia. To His High Nobility, the High Noble, Right Honorable, Wide-Ruling Lord Jacob Mossel, Governor-General, together with the Honorable Lords Councilors of the Dutch Indies. High Noble, Right Honorable, Wide-Ruling Lord and Honorable Lords. Having received by the ship Witsburg Your High Nobles' venerated letters of the 1st and 19th ultimo, along with 30000 Spanish reals for the payment of the pepper, and also 3 boundary markers to be placed at the stipulated locations, we shall dutifully fulfill this order of Your High Nobles, which the strong southwesterly winds have obstructed until now, at the earliest opportunity. In the meantime, the aforementioned vessel returns today with all the pepper on hand, consisting of 1420 bhars of black ditto, besides another 100 bhars that the king comes to present to Your High Nobles as his annual tribute, namely 94 bhars of black and 6 bhars of white pepper, being all that has been brought of the latter until now. For this reason, His Highness requested an excuse this morning through his envoys, stating that the Lampongers, not being as well settled as before the war, could for the time being not be pressured with any severity to produce white pepper. And the total amount of all this pepper, which Captain Lieutenant Hermanus Berk, as appears from the enclosed invoice and declaration of the aforementioned ship Witsburg, on account of refreshments and drinking water provided, amounting to the sum of ƒ117: 12, item ƒ8:10 for a coffin for a deceased sailor, for which we request permission to make a write-off, as well as respectfully requesting the fulfillment of the enclosed requisition for such cash, provisions, and writing materials as are sorely needed, to which we have added 30,000 lb of bar iron, for the reason that both the king and the grandees occasionally ask to buy such, and it is sorely needed for his various repairs. Furthermore, we hope that Your High Nobles will not take it amiss that, although their term has not yet fully expired, we are sending to Batavia the assistants Willem Chaton of Amsterdam and Andries Ditter of Eisleben; the former, who was taken ashore here in the year 1744 as a young sailor and has since the year 1749 been employed in the clerical service, because of his excessive familiarity with the Javanese as well as further disorderly conduct; and the second named because he did not hesitate to dispatch to His High Nobility a mendacious libel dated the last of December of the past year, to the detriment of both ourselves and other persons stationed here, after which, possibly out of a gnawing conscience, on the 22nd of January last, why from [illegible]

From Bantam, the 16th of April 1754. fled from here in a small canoe to Pontang, but was immediately brought back to your honors by the pangerang, and since his Right Honorable has done the first undersigned the honor of sending that document, and the said Ditter acknowledges having written the same in his own hand, having been, as he alleges, incited thereto by some officers stationed here, although the latter, under offer of oath, declare themselves entirely innocent therein and have requested satisfaction on that account, and he cannot give the slightest semblance of reason or proof for his accusation, we, judging ourselves as the offended parties not authorized to administer any punishment, deemed it best to refer this libel writer to the honored disposition of your Right Honorables and to send him under arrest towards Batavia. That both these assistants are being sent up under arrest, to that they have forced us this morning, because before their departure they were busy ruining the assistants' dwelling by breaking out the floor and window frames, and also smearing it everywhere with filth, etc. Since, through their departure, only seven scribes now remain, being three less than the recently stipulated number, we respectfully take the liberty of proposing four persons to your Right Honorables, namely Johan Ernst Bruijdegam, Corporal from Weissensee, Otto Frans Nicolaas Marcij from Lubeck, Jan Christiaan Arends from Wedel, and Hans Fredrik Sthal from Carlscrona, of whom the first three have been trained for the pen service from the beginning of the arrival here of the first undersigned, as it was well foreseen that no service could be performed with subjects grown wild from the war, and the last-mentioned was also employed at the pen with the consent of the Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed Lord Extraordinary Councillor van der Parra. All four we dare recommend to your Right Honorables as persons of good conduct, and we have the honor to present their handwritten petitions herewith. In the same manner as a petition from the military captain Johan Christiaen Fleikhheldt, who, having been granted by your Right Honorables' resolution of the 3rd of August 1751 such percentages on the concluded sale of linens in the fort Pera as the Malacca commissioners along the Malay Coast are accustomed to enjoy, humbly requests your Right Honorables that the Malacca ministers may be instructed to remit what is still due to him, the petitioner, on the aforementioned account, so that it may be received by him according to your Right Honorables' pleasure, either at Batavia or here from the Honorable Company's treasury. Finally, this is accompanied by a letter from the Resident Laven of Lampong, brought here the day before yesterday, and we remain with deep respect, at the bottom, Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed, Far-Ruling Lord and Honorable Lords, lower, your Right Honorables' humble and obedient servants, was signed, J. From Bantam, the 16th of April, Anno 1754 From Bantam, the 16th of April 1754. fled from here with a small canoe to Pontang, but was immediately brought before the honors by the pangerang; and since His High Nobility has done the first undersigned the honor of sending that writing, and moreover the said Ditter acknowledged having written the same in his own hand, having, as he alleges, been incited thereto by some officers stationed here, although these under offer of oath declared themselves entirely innocent in this matter and have therefore requested satisfaction, nor can he give the least semblance of reason or proof for his accusation, we, judging ourselves as the offended parties not competent to administer any punishment, deemed it best to refer this libel writer to the honored disposition of Your High Nobilities and to have him transferred under arrest toward Batavia. That both of these assistants are being sent up under arrest, they forced us to do this morning because, before their departure, they were engaged in ruining the assistants' dwelling by breaking out the floor and window frames, and also smearing it all over with filth, etc. Since, now through their departure, only seven clerks remain, thus three less than the recently determined number, we respectfully take the liberty to propose to Your High Nobilities four persons, namely Johan Ernst Brudegam, corporal from Weisenzee, Otto Frans Nicolaas Marcij from Lubek, Jan Christiaan Arends from Wedel, and Hans Fredrik Sthal from Carelskzoon, of whom the first three have been trained for clerical service from the beginning of the arrival here of the first undersigned, as it was well foreseen that no service could be performed with subjects grown wild by war, and the last-mentioned was also employed in clerical work with the consent of the Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed Extraordinary Councillor Van der Parra. We dare recommend all four to Your High Nobilities as persons of good conduct, and we have the honor to present herewith their own handwritten petitions. Likewise a petition from the Military Captain Johan Christiaen Fleischheldt, who, having been granted by Your High Nobilities' resolution of the 3rd of August 1751 such percentages on the completed sale of linens in the fort Pera as the Malacca commissioners along the Malay Coast are accustomed to enjoy, humbly requests Your High Nobilities that the Malacca ministers may be directed to remit what is still due to the petitioner for the aforementioned reason, so that according to Your High Nobilities' pleasure it may be received by him, either in Batavia or here, from the Company's treasury. Proceeding further in this to give Your High Nobilities a brief report regarding our voyage, it serves for Your High Nobilities' information that on the 25th of July of the past year I sailed out for the Chamber of Zeeland with 240 men; on the 7th of August put into England due to a storm; sailed again from there on the 5th of September; took on fresh provisions at the island of S:t Jago on the 10th of October and departed from there again on the 10th of the same month, without any ships very desired condition at the roads of Cabo de Goede Hoop, from where we departed again on the 21st of February, twelve sick having remained there in the hospital; so we arrived on the 10th of May in the Sunda Strait, having had thirteen dead and seventy-two sick between here and Cabo de Goede Hoop. To the aforementioned as before: The hooker Ter Veer, having already been summoned hither some time ago by the first signatory for the placement of the remaining missing boundary posts in accordance with Your High Nobilities' orders by dispatch of the 11th of March of the past year, but detained by Resident Laven upon the rumor of pirates roaming about there, arrived back yesterday towards evening in the company of our longboat, which had been sent thither to deliver necessities and obtain further reports. It brought along a dispatch from the Resident dated the 24th of this month, of which we have the honor to present a copy herewith, containing the information that the aforementioned pirates were said to consist of one large and two smaller two-masted vessels, along with three sampans; furthermore, his orders issued in this matter; and that the hooker Ter Veer had also seen three such vessels and taken them for Mandarese, but had found no opportunity to approach them. Furthermore, those pirates were said to have captured two pepper proas, one of seventy bahars, and to have burned another of twenty, as has also been recounted here by the Sultan's emissaries, though not in His Highness's name. The quantity of pepper was also not stated to be as large by these latter, which is why that news still seems to require more certainty. The hooker, on its return voyage hither, went as far down as Lampong Sekampung without encountering a single vessel. Upon the first rumors of these pirates, His Highness immediately sent 12 vessels and small craft, carrying roughly 200 men and the chief of Tanara, to Pulau Rakit in order to drift down slowly from there among the islands toward the Lampongs and search for those disturbers of the sea, for which purpose 6 more vessels have since been dispatched, without our having any news of their operations. We only have to report a more favorable prospect to Your High Nobilities, namely that at the end of last week and the beginning of this week a passable quantity of pepper was delivered, so that we now again have 856 to 900 bahars on hand, which we are currently busy winnowing. For which reason, and since the remaining Spanish reals in the pepper treasury amount to only 8,870, we respectfully request, upon the arrival hither of a ship to collect that grain, the fulfillment of the enclosed requisition for 20,000 such reals. Along with the hooker Ter Veer, an English two-masted vessel named Fort Marlborough, Captain Charles Cowb, also appeared in the roads from the west yesterday evening. From Bantam the 17th of August 1752: We came on board on the 16th of December of the preceding year, and on the 31st thereafter undertook to set sail for the first time, but because there was not sufficient water on the shallows, before we had come near there we struck several times, though not hard, indeed even sat fast, yet not for long, wherefore we returned back to Hellevoet until the 31st of January of this year, when because of the heavy descending drift ice we had to haul in behind the pier, where we lay until the 16th of February, finally putting to sea on the 6th of March of this year. Between the 6th and 7th at night, by the stiff north and northwest wind with fierce showers of hail and snow, as well as by the darkness of the nights and particularly by the strong currents, we were driven for the first time onto the Flemish banks, from where we were helped out again by hiring a vessel from Nieuwpoort, and between the 8th and 9th for the second time likewise by the stiff contrary winds from the N.N.W. came to fall upon the polders, where we struck twice, but fortunately, with the loss of an anchor and one and a half cables, got off there and thus continued our voyage without it being observed that the ship suffered any distress from this, while the leakage of the same on the 12th of April the Line and on the 24th thereafter the Abrolhos. We presumed to have passed the islands on the 12th of July, and had very rough weather in passing the south, even up to the coast of Java, where we arrived on the 9th of August, subsequently on the 15th thereafter in Sunda Strait, so that our voyage amounts to 5 months and 9 days. In the most humble manner I have the honor to inform Your Noble Firmnesses of my safe arrival here in Sunda Strait, namely near the corner of Anjer, with the Honorable Company's vessel 't Huijs te Manpad, after a voyage of 2 months and 7 days, having departed from the Cape of Good Hope on 13 June 1754 and arrived here in Sunda Strait on 20 August in the evening around 7 o'clock. During the voyage we had much heavy weather; the ship at times took in a great deal of water due to heavy rolling, so that one was often afraid of losing the spars. From the Cape of Good Hope until 16 August no land was sighted, when on the aforementioned date the land of Java was seen. I have likewise seen no ships. I have the honor to communicate to Your Noble Firmnesses the demise of the skipper Jan Roeloffsz., having died on 26 February 1754, whereby I, as chief mate of that vessel, have been appointed skipper, subject to the approval of Their High Nobles, to whose favor I most humbly recommend myself. The Commander's ship Lekkerland arrived in the roads of the Cape on 27 April, as did the return ship Bosschenhoven. The ship Diemen and Gustaaff Willem entered False Bay on 14 May completely damaged, the Gustaaff Willem with cable ropes parted, and the ship Diemen having had to throw its guns overboard. On the 18th of the same month the ship De Immagouda safely arrived in False Bay. At our departure we had not yet heard anything of the ship De Geregtigheijd. We have also, by ordinance, received on board the banished king of Bolaang, Saloman Manoppo.
