247 From Malabar, dated 19 July Anno 1755 From Malabar, dated 19 July Anno 1755 as it was likewise approved to insert into this resolution the report of two political members in whose presence and before whom the deacons of this city rendered proper public account of the poor relief funds administered by them during the past year 1754; To the Honorable, Venerable Lord Fredrik Cunes Commander and Chief Authority of the Coast of Malabar, Canara, and Vengurla: Honorable, Venerable, Ruling Lord! The undersigned commissioners, in compliance with Your Honorable, Venerable Lord's esteemed order, repaired today to the Dutch Church here, and there saw the deacons of this city render a proper public account of their administration during the past year 1754, and after comparing their vouchers against the monthly accounts and warrants, found that the capital of the poor as of the last day of December 1753 amounted to the following; On deposit with the Honorable Company at 4½ percent per annum - - - - - Rds 10400:—: Under the cashier Philip Lodewijk Gunther - - - - 625: 1/32 Income in 12 months, calculated from 1 January until the last day of December 1754: [illegible] Together, various legacies, that collected in the aforementioned church, interest monies, etc., amounting to - Rds 1174 ¾. Against which, in the aforementioned time, there was expended for the maintenance of the outside and inside poor of the orphanage - 1320 2/16. Thus, an excess of expenditure of 205 1/16 After deduction of the aforementioned sum, the capital as of the last day of December 1754 amounts to Rds 10819: 23/32 Consisting of the following items: The capital of the poor standing on deposit with the Honorable Company at 4½ percent per annum: Rds 10100:— The balance under the diaconal cashier Philip Lodewijk Gunther: 719 23/32. Total - - - Rds 10819 23/32 all of which Your Honorable, Venerable Lord, if desired, will be able to verify further in the statement of accounts which the aforementioned deacons have the honor to present to Your Honorable, Venerable Lord on this occasion; to which we respectfully refer, taking the liberty to conclude this, and remaining with deep reverence, /:was written underneath:/ Honorable, Venerable, Ruling Lord, Your Honorable, Venerable Lord's humble and obedient servants /:was signed:/ Iohan Bulkens, and Henderik Notermans /:in the margin:/ Cochin, 12 May Anno 1755. — The postholder at Barcelor, Arnoldus Leenen, having sent along with his letter of 13 April past a list of the costs and expenditures incurred in eleven months, it was resolved to have the same examined, according to custom here, by two members of this assembly, namely the junior merchants Feith and Notermans. — The ministers of Quilon replied by their letter of 25 March past that they deemed it advisable to refrain from sending a vessel hither to collect rice, as such a vessel could hardly make the voyage to Cochin in this season, and even if it did, it would not be able to return before the last day of October; Wherefore, the Lord Commander said, one shall retain for own use the rice which the interpreter of Barcelor delivered here at the end of the past month; As it appears from received letters from Chetwai dated 11 and 16 April past that during the shipment of masonry lime into the sloop De Kleine Willem, three manchuas with 20 candyls, and during the shipment of the aforementioned building material into the boat Cranganore, two manchuas with 6 candyls were overturned by the heavy surf, it was resolved to have the cost thereof written off the books; just as it was further resolved to pass for write-off 31 lbs of pepper, which, out of the parcel of 3800 lbs, was found short due to lying for a long time at Porca, according to the letter from the resident dated 14 March of this year, calculated at barely 5 percent; A finding having been received regarding a noticed deficit in 100051 lbs of sugar candy per the ship Giessenburg from Faifo in the Kingdom of Cochin China for this Commandement and

[illegible] and brought to the Ceylon Government, the Council has granted such disposition upon it as is set down in the margin of the following finding: Finding drawn up by the undersigned head administrator and delivered to the Honorable, Right Honorable Gentleman Fredrik Cunes, Commander and supreme ruler of the Malabar Coast with the dependencies thereof, together with the Political Council, regarding 100851 lb of sugar candy brought by the ship Giesenburg from Faifo in the kingdom of Cochin China for this Commandement and the Ceylon Government, according to the received report of the committee members who attended here at the unloading of the said sweetness, and of which the answer given regarding this by the authorities thereof is added beside this, upon which Your Right Honorable's disposition is requested. In the Company's Trade Warehouse for Cochin: 1514¾ lb of sugar candy to be written off as found missing on the consignment of 50494 lb, giving 3 percent loss. For Ceylon: 755¾ lb of sugar candy on the consignment brought of 50359 lb, making 1½ percent loss. Cochin the 10 March Anno 1755. Was signed: Nicolaas Bowijn. The Resident of Tengapatnam having been ordered by letter of the 1st of April past to inform whether the Danish ship, of which he had made mention in his letter of the 2nd of March, was supplied with water at Colletje, and what that foreign vessel has further accomplished there, he has thereupon served with information by his letter of the 22nd of the mentioned month of April that the Danish ship obtained permission from His Travancore Highness to take in water at Colletje and subsequently sailed to Calicut without unloading or loading anything, but that two Danish gentlemen have remained ashore, and currently four persons of that nation reside there, which is accepted as information; Whereas the Company's business at Tengapatnam begins to be of increasingly greater importance, the Lord Commander had judged it useful that the interpreter Jacob [illegible] as the Resident henceforth shall have an equal responsibility for all that concerns the interests of the Company there, and thus shall also be present at the concluding of contracts and the making of tenders and likewise must vouch for the quality of the cloths and further disbursement of cash as has already been written to the Resident here, with which arrangement the Council fully conformed; In consequence of the demise of the senior merchant and secunde of this Commandement Nicolaas Bowijn on the 6th of April past, the Lord Commander had appointed the junior merchants Feith and Isaaksz as commissioners over the main treasury and the clerical work concerning trade, having demanded of the said Isaaksz as trade transferor [illegible] His Honor. Furthermore, the Company's military personnel having fallen vacant through the demise of the Colonel [illegible], given to the first lieutenant Jacob Wolf, which respective arrangements having been approved, it was furthermore resolved and agreed [illegible] Colletje From Malabar under Date 19 July Anno 1755. A finding having been received regarding an observed shortage of 15000 lb of ash brought by the ship Voorburg from Surat for Ceylon and this Commandement, the Council has granted such disposition upon it as is set down in the margin of the following finding; After the prayer was spoken, the Lord Commander communicated to the assembly the departure of the ship Voorburg on the 21st of May last to Batavia, and the appearance of an English private ship named Watson in the southern Mud Bay, which private foreign vessel is laden with cotton, cowries, and wheat and destined from Bombay to Madras; having been forced by heavy leakage and the tempestuous weather to enter this bay on the 27th of May past, according to the writing of the Porca Resident, to winter there and repair its defects. From Malabar Under Date 19 July Anno 1717 Finding drawn up by the undersigned Transferrer of Trade and submitted in all respect to the Honorable, Right Honorable Lord Fredrik Cunes Commander and Supreme Ruler of the Coast of Malabar with the dependencies thereof, alongside the Honorable Political Council, on account of the deficits of various goods brought hither per the ship Voorburg from Surat for the Ceylon government and the Malabar Commandment, according to incoming sworn reports of the commissioners who attended the discharge thereof, and whereof the answers given in that regard by the Captain-Lieutenant at Sea Govert van Wille are specified alongside this, whereupon Your Honorable, Right Honorable's decision is requested, namely: For Cochin In the Company's Trade Warehouse 268¾ lb Cotton found less upon the consignment of 126875 lb, yielding a loss of 1 per cent, write off. In the Company's Dispensary 10251½ lb Wheat found less upon the consignment of 75000 lb or 25 Lasts, yielding 2½ per cent, write off. For Ceylon In the Company's Dispensary 2128 lb Wheat found short upon the consignment of 7500 lb or 25 lasts, making 2½ per cent; one and a half per cent of each write off, and pay the rest. Furthermore, reading was taken of a Coromandel missive dated 23 May and of a Bengal one of 16 February past, the latter having as an enclosure an account to the debit of the Colonel Maccassrij, late, amounting to f 363: 12:—, as appears below. — Cochin the 20 May Anno 1755. was signed: Pieter Isaaksz:— Which monies it is understood shall be reimbursed to the Company from the share of said Colonel in the douceur monies. From Souratta, dated 4 January Anno 1755. From Souratta, 4 January Anno 1755. Bloemendaal, Marienbosch, and Luxenburg arrived. To His Right Honour the Right Honourable, Highly Esteemed Lord, Lord Jacob Mossel, Governor-General, as well as the Honourable Lords Councillors of the Netherlands Indies at Batavia. Right Honourable, Highly Esteemed, Far-Ruling Lord, and Honourable Lords. By the ships Bloemendaal on 30 September, Marienbosch on 3 October, and Luxenburg on 17 October last, we had the honour to receive from the hands of the Captain-Lieutenants Cornelis de Hijs and Adriaan de Graaff, and from the Captain, your Right Honours' esteemed letters of 10 and 20 August prior, with all their enclosures. We thank your Right Honours most humbly for the early dispatch and substantial cargo of the aforementioned vessels, which were also successfully unloaded, after proper satisfaction was first given for the affront committed against the Company—and described more fully in our resolutions of 4 September—through a public and stately visit paid on 5 October to the Director's house by the lieutenant Ali Nawaas Chan in the name of the city governor Safderchan. It was particularly pleasant for us to learn of the promotion of the Honourable Lord Jeremias van Riemsdijk to Extraordinary Councillor of the Indies, with which eminent charge we have the honour hereby to congratulate his Honour, expressing our humble gratitude for your Right Honours' favourable communication. Likewise, we show our due acknowledgement for the approval of the construction of a new hooker named the Jonge Iacob, as well as the hiring of the ghurab the Hoop, the gift account of the expenses of the vessels, and the purchase both of the garden of the departed Director Lord Pecock and of the two galbats, the use of which we make of the latter being stated each time by resolution. Furthermore, we thank your Right Honours for the communication of the copies of the letters sent to Ceylon, Mallabaar, Cormandel, and Bengal, written under dates of 31 August and 15 November of the past year, as well as 9 June and 11 July of this year, the contents of which will serve as our guide and will be most obediently observed so far as applicable. The claim of the absconded warehouse keeper will be re-examined, and as many Persians and Arabs will be taken into service on the aforementioned basis as possible, having assigned that commission to the Fiscal David Kellij in our session of 19 October last; just as we also took a decision on the 5th of the aforementioned month to have all weights and measures calibrated twice a year, following the example of Batavia. We shall also henceforth always observe the practice of closing the letters and placing the invoices together with the bills of lading in separate covers, and holding no more annual festivities at the expense of the Company. Passing herewith to answering the extracts from the Fatherland concerning the matter of Souratta, we have the honour to insert the same here in the transmitted copies of the letters. The Memoir left behind by the outgoing Director Schreuder to his successor we have read with pleasure, both on account of its writing style, although here and there a little tedious, as well as especially on account of its substantial contents and considerations relative to the further expansion and improvement of trade in this region. We gladly give the aforementioned Director Schreuder that satisfaction, that during his administration trade has flourished and increased more than before, such that in his last book year 1753/1754 everything was sold out and nothing more was to be found in the warehouses, whereby the profits obtained on the sales amounted to a sum of 69835 guilders and 16 stuivers, which, although by the delivery of no more than two ships it cannot match those of previous years, will nevertheless not appear unpleasant; and we trust, under Heaven's blessing, this year and in the future to be able to give your Honours [illegible] as when it had the matter to expenses.

[illegible] the following year [illegible] already had been profited ƒ769198:16:8:, and we may therefore consider it not too broadly stated or too much exaggerated when Director Schreuder says that here annually about a million in profits can be obtained for the Company. We only remark on this that annually five shiploads are required for it, which have been granted by Your Excellencies, but which would significantly diminish the profits if a proper account were drawn up and the dangerousness of the fairway were taken into account. The bulkiness of the sugar, which is brought here and sold in large quantities, contributes very much to this, yes, we guess that the sugar alone takes up three of the five ships. The 140 per cent profit obtained on it looks good outwardly, but when one considers that on a quantity of over 2100000 lb only just over ƒ244000:– in pure profits was obtained—we speak according to the return (of 17 29/50 inserted in the ministers' letter to Your Excellencies of 15 December 1750)—then, if one needs three ships' space for that, few true profits will remain when one draws up a merchant's account of all the expenses. Sugar, when it yields generous profits, is good merchandise for ballast and to fill the remaining space, but it becomes harmful, even in that case, when one equips one or more additional ships for its sake. We do not put this forward as if we disapproved of sending sugar to this directorship; by no means, the selling price of eight groats per lb is a good price; but we are of the opinion that if one loads all the other merchandise besides the sugar into three ships, that in each ship so much space will still remain that it can be filled with a large quantity of sugar, and that to send about three million and more pounds, one does not precisely need two more ships, and thus five. At least this is certain to us, that if one were to employ five ships for that trade, there must be loaded into the same the goods as Your Excellencies have resolved on the recommendation of the departing Director Schreuder, one of those whereby the sending of a direct ship from the Head Office to that empire can be spared, without even, through the loading of those goods for Mocha, other profitable goods for Souratta needing to be left behind; will have examined the aforesaid return, which we trust that Your Excellencies with the utmost attention trade must be built, Your Excellencies then for noteworthy profits, as large losses have occurred on some goods, such as on the Quicksilver, Red Lead, Dutch Vermilion etc., but especially the Bengal silk, on which, on a quantity of 29783 5/4 lb, having amounted to a purchase capital of ƒ181963:10:, there was lost 34 1/2 per cent, or more than ƒ62781:9:8:, whereas from here one has so often complained about not fulfilling our demand for that precious merchandise, and it still yields a reasonable profit, whether one has demanded that silk from here, or whether on it still a loss [illegible] the following year will have as many goods G Ship C 1 unrequested E

From Surat the 4 January A:o 1751. sent unrequested to this Directorate, we have not been able to discover, still less what moved the officials to dispose of the same at such a notable loss; and therefore one will have to inform us of both matters at the very first opportunity, when we shall explain ourselves further thereon. is too low, indeed differs by a capital sum to the disadvantage compared to that which is sold in the fatherland; you have therefore done well to decline the pepper at the latest shipment; but with regard to the fixed selling price in the future of not less than f35: per cent, we must further remark that we previously set the selling price in Bengal and on Coromandel at not less than 44: per cent, and we judge that the same ought to fetch that price in Surat as well, or at least so little less that it cannot be purchased from us by our competitors and sent to other places where they then ruin the market for us. The profit of 89 3/8 per cent achieved thereon seems outwardly to make quite a good showing, but the reason for this is solely because it is Bantam pepper, which this Office can charge at f14: per cent, whereas the Company pays f25:- at purchase for the pepper produced in Malabar, which calculated on that pepper would then yield a loss, while in the meantime, by sending so much less Bantam and more Malabar pepper to the fatherland, the percentage at sale also turns out that much smaller. Further examining the aforementioned yield with respect to the goods brought from China to this Directorate and sold, we find the same in such a poor state that although you, at least for the present, [illegible] have not seen fit to resolve upon the proposal with relation to the navigation and trade from China to Surat contained in the aforementioned memorandum of the outgoing Director Schreuder, we nevertheless, for the sake of the motives upon which the aforementioned Director Schreuder bases his proposal, as agreeing entirely with our considerations advanced in our general rescripts to you in the years 1750 and 1751 under the matters of China, have resolved provisionally to abandon the navigation and trade from China to Surat; for it is surely no manner of trading to maintain a navigation and trade when one sees and finds that, not to speak of some loss-making articles, nearly the principal product, consisting of sugar, yields an advance of a little over 33 per cent, whereas the sugar that is sent from the main settlement, and thus from our colony, to Surat gives a profit of 114 3/8 per cent, and therefore we order you to cease that navigation and trade from China to Surat. The return goods here becoming more expensive from year to year, are The domestic copper has yielded a profit of 46¾ percent in the two most recent years. ruin the business by means of our own trade, and therefore we judge that the selling prices at all the trading offices throughout the whole of the Indies must be set as equally as is in any way possible, or at least the differences be so slight, that they cannot be bought at one office and sold again at another by others, to such a notable disadvantage of the Company as now happens; and when proper attention is paid to this, as we desire for the service of the Company, then we trust that all those or so-called Portuguese, English, and indeed that the Swedes, besides sailing directly to China, would also sail to other places in the Indies to carry on trade there from one place to another, we can hardly accept as true; and therefore we wish to be somewhat further elucidated on this matter. The departure date of the last ship having been determined by Their High Noble Excellencies to be at the latest on the 30th of April, we shall [illegible] that order [illegible] winter here, we shall [illegible] send something thither, [illegible] to celebrate, the following year; but when those goods are delivered at Ceylon, the Company has the advantage that it saves the risk of the voyage from Ceylon to Batavia, for such economies, we judge, must be observed to the utmost, just as close attention must be paid to the time of departure of the ships, and that this does not take place when the season is too far advanced, which recently caused the loss of the ship Zeelandia and now very likely again of Hogersmilde, whereby the Honorable Company has suffered very significant damage; and therefore the Surat servants shall absolutely be obliged, if the season has advanced too far, always to detain the ships for wintering, whether at Bombay or at Bhavnagar, wherever it is most suitably situated. The newly undertaken expedition to Cutch Mandvi [illegible] that something may come of it, and [illegible] prevents from [illegible] servants run somewhat ahead in the proposals they make to establish a Company [illegible] there immediately with the consequences pertaining thereto, and therefore we approve that Your Honors have ordered the servants to have that expedition undertaken once more as a trial, in order to ascertain whether matters there continue to present themselves as favorably as the commissioner stated in his report, so that, having obtained further knowledge and certainty thereof, the necessary decisions may be taken. One will punish the negligence of the ship officers. to spend with gratitude and merriment; but we believe that in case one should make an annual custom of this, since it is not customary in this country that any expenses are made or borne on that account by the country or city, but everyone who organizes the same pays for it out of his own purse, that thus also in the future, upon the occurrence of that birthday, both in this direction and all other offices of the Company, the main headquarters not excluded (to which your honors will have to dispatch the necessary orders to all the same), these costs may not be charged to the account of the Company, but everyone will be obliged to bear them himself. One will dispatch the ships quickly. The matter of the ships provides us with nothing particular, except that, in dutiful observance of your High Noble Lordships' highly respected order, we shall endeavor to effect their prompt dispatch as far as possible, the fiscal officer having been instructed to examine accurately the journals, especially of those arriving late or having had a long voyage, and to conduct all further possible investigation in order to discover to what the cause of their late arrival is to be ascribed, particularly whether they were detained by providing convoy, unnecessary and even prohibited calling at ports, longer stay than necessary at such places where they had to call according to orders, etc.; and whether the ship's crew had private volumes, and whether the ship officers brought in or took along any private volumes exceeding the regulations, as well as whether any private sugar or other volumes were sold or taken on board along the way by them, or by the passengers and other crew members; whereupon we shall, according to findings, cause proceedings to be instituted against the offenders and respectfully report thereon to your High Noble Lordships. In order to proceed against the offenders. We shall also not fail to send the ships with the returns for the Fatherland via Ceylon as quickly as possible, where we shall also henceforth address all goods destined for the Fatherland. Concerning the ships that must winter here, one will not fail to follow most obediently, as far as possible, the orders contained in the missive of the 20th of August last; and as soon as the printed order concerning the anchorage of the ships in this roadstead has reached us, we shall instruct the ship officers with the same. The Fatherland returns will be sent to Ceylon. In dutiful obedience to your High Noble Lordships' resolutions of the 4th of December of last year, we shall punish the ship officers whenever they fail to take care of the plants and crops given to them; as well as, according to order, draw up a specific list of all ships of other European nations arriving here, containing their names and the time of their arrival and departure, as well as, as accurately as feasible, the quantity and quality of the imported goods, also the prices for which they were sold, as well as those of the merchandise they take from here, adding the necessary remarks, as we have the honor to present such a memorandum herewith to your High Noble Lordships, under No. [illegible]. To the ship Bloemendaal, bringing the junior merchants Rutgerus van Ebbenhorst and Lodewijk Andries de Teger, we have, pursuant to our resolution of the 5th of October last, granted a requisition of necessities, and on the 14th ditto designated this vessel to fetch the returns from Ketsmandui, to which end we have provided her with another 2 twelve-pounders and 2 eight-pounders, together with their equipment and the necessary ammunition, and also, on account of the weakness of her crew, resolved on the 19th of the same month to reinforce her with some men from Marienbosch and Luxemburg, provided the aforesaid voyage could take place early enough to return their men to the said vessels before their departure for Batavia; but the necessary reports from Ketsmandui being delayed, we thought fit to place on this vessel 20 men from Luxemburg and 26 Buginese, and to send her with a considerable cargo to Bassein, of which voyage we shall report more fully to Your High Noble Worships hereafter. And whereas it is your intention that we shall again send a ship on freight to Mocha this year, we have designated this vessel for that purpose; concerning which we must further add that, according to the certificate granted, the barrels of northern refined copper brought last year with Bloemendaal were received in good condition with a gross weight of 25,723 lb. By the ship Marienbosch, the junior merchants Philip van Gaaren and Pierre Antoine de Bellon, together with the assistant Jan Fredrik de Hartogh, have arrived. To this vessel a few ship's necessities were granted on the 14th of October, and the crew being reinforced to 100 European hands, she was sent with merchandise in company with Bloemendaal to Bassein. Concerning the ship Luxemburg there is nothing to report, except that, pursuant to Your High Noble Worships' highly esteemed order, she was provided with six months of rice, as well as a heavy tow-rope, and some minor necessities requested, with which we proceed to the vessels stationed within this directorship, and begin with the narrow ship De Jonge Susanna, which has returned from the voyage to Mozambique without having been able to secure anything from the lost ship Breedenhoff; the skipper, along with all the salvaged crew, with the exception of a few who remained lying sick in the hospital at the time and whom, although recovered, they finally refused to allow to follow, having departed for Europe on Portuguese ships, well provided with cash, and having left in the hands of the Governor there, on account of the Company, 3,700 Dutch ducats, which the latter had stamped with the letters M: R:, and thus put into circulation. The mates sent thither by us reclaimed them in vain, the Governor declaring that he could or might not hand over those moneys to anyone except the skipper Jan Nielson, or by his order. The new hoeker De Jonge Jacob having been launched into the water on 17 September, we decided on 14 October to rig the same with the greatest speed under the command of sea captain Willem Marchis, it being simultaneously found proper to place chief mate Pieter de Backker personally on her, for the accountability of the goods and rigging, for which that sent from Batavia along with the spars in stock here have been employed, having further taken from the ships some spars and their new spritsails which the officers declared they could spare, and resolved to purchase what was lacking, of all which we shall have the honor in due time to present Your High Excellencies with further demonstration, always strictly complying with this order. Request for permission to build more covered horrijs. In dutiful observance of what Your High Excellencies were pleased to order in your respected letter of 20 August of this year regarding the construction of new vessels, we find ourselves obliged to request Your High Excellencies' favorable permission to have 4 more large covered horrijs built, like the Lastdrager or Uijtwinner, to serve for unloading and loading, whereby heavy expenses can be saved for the Honorable Company annually, since one otherwise must always employ many hired vessels for this purpose; besides that the thefts, according to the annexed declaration under No. 36, are becoming so great among the natives that one no longer dares trust sugar in these latter. As appears from the report under No. 27, upon inspection the locking of all the Honorable Company's covered vessels was even found to be so bad that one could open the hatches without difficulty, which we, pursuant to further report under No. 28, have remedied, and in our session of 24 October last resolved to have such inspections take place annually; furthermore, in the requisition or purchase of spars or in their entry in the books, or in the letters and resolutions, we shall not forget to state how many palms thick they are. Touching the delivered cargoes of the ships, we can briefly inform Your High Excellencies that, pursuant to the findings on that of Thoornvliet, annexed to our respectful last letter via Malacca of 11 May, of which the duplicate is enclosed herewith under No. 31, no cowries were brought by that vessel from Cochin China, the disposition taken in that respect pursuant to the latest orders being otherwise open to further examination, if desired, in our decision of 10 May of this year. We shall add the findings of the over- and underweights occurring on the cargoes of Bloemendaal, Marienbosch, and Luxemburgh to this, according to custom, if the shortage of time permits preparing them. Sale of trade goods. The sale of trade goods, according to the circumstances of the times, has still taken place with quite good profits, and would have yielded more if the goods brought by Bloemendaal and De Drie Papegaijen in the past year had not already all been sold when we received the sad news of the loss of the ships Wimmenum and Vreeden. The credit that we hold here above all nations has in this matter prevailed over the bazaar price, which is no higher than rupees 12 or f 18:- per 100 lb, and that only for single canasters. Since the sugar, both powdered and candy, brought by the ship Thoornvliet and [illegible] is still lying in the warehouses in part to spoil, in order to clear them of it, it was stipulated at the latest sale that a portion of those sweets should always be delivered at the same time as those of the new shipment. Notwithstanding the fall in the price of tortoiseshell, we would still have disposed of the parcel recently brought by Bloemendaal with a small profit if it had been charged to us at the same prices as in previous years, or at 500 pieces per picol, but these two points differing too much, we have been obliged to keep the same for better times in order to try to negotiate a more favorable price for it than that which is currently offered to us. Regarding the loss incurred on the vermilion, quicksilver, Chinese baros camphor, genuine amber, and aloeswood sold in the year past, we must, in dutiful obedience to Your High Noble Worships' respected order, impart that the same amounts to a sum of f 9848:8:8: or 23½ percent, as well as concerning the difference in calculating the Chinese profits in the book year 1752/3. Your High Noble Worships having also desired, by copy of the letter of the 2nd of October of the aforesaid year, to be elucidated regarding the weight of elephant tusks upon which the most profit could be gained, we have the honor to dutifully submit that in former times the Cape tusks of all kinds of sizes and weights used to be very popular and gave good profit, as also the Siamese; but the heavy annual importation by the Portuguese from Mozambique, Mombasa, Pate, Massawa, and other places on the east coast of Africa, besides what is brought by others, has gradually caused the prices to fall greatly, and made that article of trade, on account of the great surfeit, less and less sought after. In the past month of November, the Portuguese frigates that come here annually from Goa for trade brought about 150,000 lb of those tusks, besides a good quantity of Guinea ones arrived about the same time with a private Portuguese ship, which are nearly all of the largest and heaviest sort, and for that reason could not be sold, but have remained lying in the warehouses. The smallest sort also will not sell, but the most sought-after are the Siamese and Guinea tusks of 20 to 28 lb. The greater or lesser profits depend, however, principally on the purchase price thereof, since, as shown by the latest sales, reasonable and even higher prices than in former years have been negotiated for the tusks. On the other hand, the instruction to sell the Japanese bar copper for no less than f 90:— per 100 lb we shall dutifully obey; had we had the good fortune to receive our requisition of copper, it would have been sold already. In making that request we had no other than mercantile intentions, namely to supply the merchants so abundantly with that mineral that the Swedes, upon their return, would have found no market, or at least would not have found their profit in it.

From Surat, the 4th of January 1755 From Surat, the 31st of January Anno 1755 ...which, combined with the merchandise in Bassein, where copper is in very high demand, provides us with a new reason to enlarge our demand; wherefore we request Your High Noble Lordships, on the other hand, to be pleased to excuse us from the following merchandise, because we shall not know what to do with it in the future, namely Areca, Orpiment, Camphor, Cowries, Cochineal, Musk, and Quicksilver. The sappanwood, brought by the latest ships, which likewise cannot be sold and with which the city is still filled, we decided in our session of the 19th of October last to leave in the ships to serve as dunnage for them, since for lack thereof no Chinese planks can be provided according to custom. The collection of return goods would, in view of the unheard-of prices demanded here for the linens and actually paid by our competitors, have provided us with not the least material today, had we not had the benefit of the offices of Ahmedabad and Broach. For after we made every conceivable effort in vain with the Surat suppliers, we finally found ourselves obliged in May to suspend the collection here, without however completely renouncing it, until finally, seeing all hope of succeeding lost, we had to take the resolution on the 26th of June to remain idle in Surat for a year. This has nevertheless not hindered us, but on the contrary spurred us on to look for other means (to which Broach, according to the circumstances of the time, contributed its share), as appears from the memorandum of contracting with the prices inserted in our resolution of the 12th of June, which, apart from the cotton yarns and a few items, has also been fulfilled. We have completed the shortage in the former in another manner, while the unrest that arose in Cutch caused the ordered collection of cotton yarns there to be countermanded, and is at the same time the reason that the return goods lying ready there could not yet be collected. Apart from the full demand of cotton yarns, Your High Noble Lordships nevertheless receive with the ship Luxemburg another 18 packs of linens and a small pack of silk patolas, together with 13 bales and 17 chests and cases for India according to the accompanying invoice, while with that same vessel we have forwarded to Ceylon 249 packs of linens, 263 bales of cotton yarns, and 13 cases of drugs pro Patria, which we owe almost entirely to the first-mentioned two offices. We shall in the future neglect nothing to make the collection of return goods in this financial year as favorable as possible by completing the submitted demands, and subsequently to provide good-quality goods for the lowest prices according to the intention of the Lords Majors in the Fatherland as well as of Your High Noble Lordships, as we hope that what we dispatch today will be found to be such, while for the rest we shall duly observe the orders. With the contracting of return goods for Anno 1752/3 pursuant to the demands received with the Bloemendaal, both for the Fatherland and India, we have been more fortunate than last year, since the suppliers showed themselves to be more tractable and we divided the new demands between Surat, Ahmedabad, and Broach into three portions, as appears from the draft inserted in our resolution of the 24th of October last, observing therein to assign to each office such goods as turn out best there. Consequently, the new contracting here, contrary to all expectation and to the surprise of us all, already made its progress at the said session, and that of Broach on the 6th of November for such prices as are made known in our resolution of those dates, while that of Ahmedabad will also follow shortly; and we have good hope not only of making a rich collection this year because the contractings were able to take place so early, and matters both here and in Broach are already actively underway, but we have at the same time the humble confidence that Your High Noble Lordships will honor our proceedings in this matter with your approval, the more so because we contracted the goods in Surat for lower prices than our competitors must pay for the same assortment. We humbly request you to be pleased to fulfill our demands for merchandise to the utmost, especially the article of copper, which is currently in high demand, wherefore we wish and hope that this may merit Your High Noble Lordships' consideration. The said mineral had yielded 20 5/8 percent, and thus . . percent more than the other European copper, whereby we were moved, according to merchant practice, to demand goods that yielded the most profit. It is true that we forgot to make this known by letter, wherefore we find ourselves obliged to implore Your High Noble Lordships' indulgence in that regard; as we also do in respect of the request for approval of the entries and write-offs more broadly detailed in our resolutions of the 5th and 28th of August, 4th of September, and 14th of October of this year, and the most recently sent orders concerning this subject will be strictly complied with. Reasons why the trade books will follow with the next ships because, on account of the numerous outstanding matters of the subordinate offices and their great distance, it is impossible to send them earlier; wherefore we hope that Your High Noble Lordships, according to your customary goodness, will be pleased to take these reasons into consideration, and find them satisfactory, consequently also favorably relieving this office from the strict order contained in the 7th article of the Ampliations on the keeping and examining of the Trade and Pay Books dated 19 October 1753. And we will cause the further contents of what was ordered under the aforesaid date and the 30th of July of the same year to be exactly complied with, to which end copies and extracts thereof have been delivered to all whom it concerns, as well as a copy of the model booklet of the unrated goods; item to the trade office of the resolution under date of 17 August 1753 concerning the redress in the addition in the trade books of this Directorship, as well as of the regulation on weighing in and out of the 20th of the aforesaid month. Also, according to Your High Noble Lordships' venerated order of the 30th of October of the past year, a beginning has already been made in all the Honorable Company's books and papers to use Guilders, stuivers, and Pennings; and at the notification of the prices of the latest sale on the 6th of November last, what was ordered by the resolution of the 20th of December of the past year was dutifully observed, as well as the assessment of Sea Captain Toachim Outjes redressed in the books, in conformity with Your High Noble Lordships' honored resolution of the 6th of August last; and the orders given therein regarding the gross weight of the packages being brought will be most obediently followed, and on that occasion attached hereto under No. 33 is the declaration of the commissioners who assisted at the delivery of the barrels of Nordic refined copper brought in the year 1753 by Sea Captain Willem Marchis, from which it appears that the said barrels were found in good condition and both on board and on shore weighed 25723 lb gross, but only 23632 lb net, wherewith we trust to have complied with Your High Noble Lordships' intention in that regard. To conclude this matter, we will only add that the Trade Bookkeeper has been instructed to let the debt of the absconded Warehouse Master Willem van Laar, amounting to ƒ2029:3:, continue to run on the books here, and for the interest money calculated on the Returns henceforth to take 3 instead of 4 percent, as well as the sum of ƒ13456:17:8, which according to the statement was neglected to be credited to the General Office on the aforesaid interest account, and that in examining the same they are brought into and held in dutiful observance, a copy of the resolution of the 14th of December of the same year having also been delivered to the pay bookkeeper in order to see therefrom how the servants earning under 40 Guilders in wages must henceforth run in the Pay Books. Carpentry and repairs, none have been done except what was necessary. The wooden revetment of the wharf next to the northern stone pier one was obliged to renew, because otherwise the strong drainage would have hollowed out the earth from behind the said revetment, and washed away for the greatest part the ground upon which the outer path stands, as is detailed more broadly in our resolution taken in the session of the 10th of May; this renewal having cost ro/a 316 1/16 or ƒ475:—:8. On the 15th following thereupon, it was resolved to appropriate the stone house on the wharf inhabited by the pay bookkeeper, in order to store in the lower part thereof the gunpowder expected from Batavia, since the previous powder cellar was virtually washed away, and that within the Lodge was not spacious enough. For the greater security of this dangerous commodity, in June, at the request of the first undersigned, a written Parwana was granted by the Castle Commander Sidi Helaal on behalf of Sidi Flavis Masoetchan to erect a small stretch of stone wall on the wharf next to the aforesaid house instead of a bamboo enclosure, serving at the same time as a boundary wall on the Honorable Company's own land. These and other such suggestions found full acceptance with the suspicious Regents, and they took this as a pretext to resolve to have the aforementioned wall demolished again. Concerning the further circumstances and consequences of the dispute that arose from this, we shall, in order to avoid prolixity, respectfully refer to the account inserted in our resolution of the 4th of September last, and merely conclude by saying that the Regents refused to rest until they had dug up and removed that stumbling block, namely the old foundations. On the Old Lodge, nothing noteworthy was built during the past financial year, and we shall most obediently observe the prohibitions against any further alterations thereto; yet at the same time we find ourselves obliged humbly to request Your High Excellencies that we may be permitted to carry out such unavoidable repairs as shall be utterly necessary to preserve this building from collapse and the Honorable Company's servants residing therein from accidents. Because no further living space remains there and in other rented dwellings, we were obliged to rent a small house for the three recently arrived unmarried junior merchants near the Lodge for ro/a 9: - or ƒ13:10: per month. In the Honorable Company's main treasury, little or no cash has lain idle and interest-free during the past financial year, the funds having been continuously applied, as they came in, to the procurement of return cargoes and other daily household expenditures. Regarding this order, we must take the liberty respectfully to represent to Your High Excellencies that it is utterly impossible to change the price current monthly, since the supplies must be provided by natives, none of whom will or can enter into a contract for that purpose for less than a full year, on account of the great trouble and expense attached thereto, unless he were greatly advantaged thereby; which was also partly the reason why the administrators were authorized to make the deliveries at market price, as no native at that time would take upon himself the risk of constantly fluctuating prices, not even for an entire year, much less by the month, except for a considerable advance, whereby, as the outcome has shown, the Honorable Company would have suffered greater loss than by the former method. In the next year, when contracts of this nature are customarily awarded here, we shall nevertheless attempt to frame a new price current and, if possible, restore matters to the old footing, since, notwithstanding the kindness Your High Excellencies subsequently showed in approving the above-mentioned change as an accomplished fact in your further esteemed letter of the 20th of August of this year, we believe such to be your intention. Furthermore, we find ourselves obliged to express our humble gratitude for the favorable approval of the percentages permitted to the Warehouse Master to be written off on certain goods that are not recorded in the general regulations of the 15th of August 1752, and we shall let the restrictions added thereto serve for our dutiful compliance. The amount of the country's dues in the past year does not figure strongly in the books, since the Honorable Company's share in the private toll account amounts to no more than ro=a 164 3/4 or ƒ 2472:—:8, the sale of real estate and ships ro/a 400: or ƒ600:—, and the stamp money ro/a 925 13/28 or ƒ1388:13:—, thus amounting together to roa 29 13 3/4, ƒ4460:13:8, and differing to the disadvantage of the book year 175 2/3 by ro/a 2815 1/4, or ƒ 2: 19:— less than in Anno 175 2/3.
