From Souratta under date 4 January 1755: — From Souratta under date 4 January Anno 1755. The unrest between the Regents here arisen in the beginning of this Year having for the present been calmed, and the Regency impending, so that one may hope to keep peace and quiet at least for some time, it was understood to discharge again the Company of Pathans, which had been deemed fit to enlist by resolution of the 11th of January of this Year, and to relieve the Honorable Company of the greatest part of that costly Militia, keeping in service only one Jamadar or head alongside 4 commoners in order to be able to complete the Corps again through these men in case of rising necessity, since it is otherwise very difficult to obtain them. Below stood: Thus done and decreed in the Dutch Factory Souratta, on the day, month, and Year as above. Was signed: J:n de Roth, J:n Drabbe, J:n Al: Sweersdelandas, D:d Kellij, O:t Hendrik Ruper. Friday the 10th of May Anno 1754. All present except the Honorable E: F:n Drabbe, senior merchant, secunde, and Head Administrator on account of indisposition. The ship Thoornvliet being not only completely discharged but also already provided with the necessary ballast and provisions, as well as the remainder of the new crew of Moors having departed on board yesterday, the Director in council considered the letter drawn up by his honor to be sent with the said vessel via Malacca to their High Excellencies, which was read, as was the reply for Malacca and China, all the members concurring with the contents thereof; further they reviewed and approved the Demands of Merchandise submitted by the secunde and Head Administrator Ian Drabbe to be dispatched to the two last-mentioned Factories, resolving at the same time to send a small box with samples of Porcelain to Canton, and to grant Captain Boudewijn Moole his dispatches tomorrow with strict orders to leave the shore immediately and to depart the roadstead as soon as he shall have reached his ship, in order to get out of the gulf if possible still by the end of this spring tide. — p:s 2„ –„— „ 34704 3/8 „ 1/12. 167: — . ¼ s:r Subsequently, his honor produced a Finding prepared by the above-mentioned secunde and head administrator on the delivered cargo of the aforesaid vessel, which it was thought fit to insert here. III To credit the ship's officers on account for Benzuin Cabessa . - - - - - - lb 45/½ or 1½ This matter having thus been dealt with, the Lord Commander placed on the table a report from two members of the Council of Policy, namely the junior merchants David Kellij, Cashier, and Otto Hendrik Ruperti, pro tempore Secretary, as having been expressly commissioned by His Honour to examine accurately the condition of the recently delivered canassers as well as the quality of the sugar itself, both powder and candy; which paper having been read, it was resolved to insert it here and to send a copy thereof to Batavia. To the Honourable Worshipful Lord Johan de Roth Director of this Directorate Honourable Worshipful Ruling Lord In conformity with Your Honourable Worship's respected verbal orders, the undersigned political persons, as expressly commissioned, proceeded yesterday to the Company's warehouse and there, in the presence of the sea captain Boudewijn Moole, accurately examined and inspected not only the condition of the canassers brought by the vessel Thoornvleet, but also the state of the sugar itself, both powder and candy, and found concerning the one and the other: That more than three-fifths of the canassers, which are all made of light bamboo, and not like those coming from Batavia lined inside with leaves, but only provided with a thin straw mat, looked moist and syrupy, many were also squashed so flat that they resembled a cake rather than a canasser, and several were broken open here and there, but mainly on the side of the bottom, which necessarily must have caused a great spillage in breaking up the layers, which would have been even greater had not Your Honourable Worship, at the request of the aforementioned Captain, seen fit to have sacks provided to him, in which the most dilapidated canassers were brought ashore, although one could not thereby prevent the spillage during the weighing and stowing away in the warehouse. Concerning the sugar itself, the undersigned had 24 canassers of powder and as many of candy sampled from the entire delivered parcel and found that of the former two-thirds were very white, and one-third brown, but all of them moist and clammy, also very soft and greasy between the fingers, and not like the Javanese sugar, hard and granular, this aforementioned moisture apparently having to be attributed to the freshness of that sweetness and that the same was not yet dry enough when the canassers were filled. The candy sugar is likewise generally brown, gritty, and moist, so that it will not be able to lie long without formally beginning to turn to syrup. Wherewith we have the honour to call ourselves with due veneration, Beneath stood: Honourable Worshipful Ruling Lord. Lower: Your Honourable Worship's very obedient and faithful servants. And whereas from this aforesaid document the bad condition of the sugar is abundantly evident, and the approaching rainy season, when even dry goods run the risk of moisture, gives reasonable cause to fear that the same will before long formally turn to syrup, and moreover the large quantity of sweetness brought by the English and French from Bengal, from China, and from elsewhere, has caused a considerable drop in price, the Lord Director indicated that His Honour deemed it most expedient for the Company to dispose of that commodity as soon as possible, having endeavoured to that end to encourage the brokers, but that they initially seemed to decline entirely, pretending that the quantity of the candy was too large, and the sugar generally in too poor a condition to be transported, so that this sweetness would only have to be sold within this city and in the neighbouring places, for which they said they saw no or little chance; but that His Honour, after having taken much trouble and effort, had finally brought them so far that the said brokers, on condition of 6 months' credit, had promised to take off the whole parcel, offering for 100 lb of powder sugar ro/a 12:—:: and for the candy ro/a 15: —: – which offer, considering all the aforesaid circumstances, seemed by no means to be rejected, but was accepted and approved with a unanimous vote, the brokers subsequently being called inside and, after their offer was put to them, congratulated on the purchase. The wooden revetment standing in front of that part of the Company's wharf where formerly the so-called Poepen-Bayert was located, or between its northeast gate and the stone pier, having been severely damaged last year by the exceptionally heavy drainage of water, and several wooden anchors having broken due to the washing away of the lower earth from behind the revetment as well as the weight of the upper earth, so that already then, out of fear that it would be completely torn away by the violence of the descending water, one was forced to secure the heads of the piles as well as the upper cross-beams with heavy ropes to the best of one's ability, whereby the said revetment was preserved to such an extent that it remained standing, although in a dilapidated state; all of which gave reasonable cause to fear that if it were not timely and properly provided for

From Souratta dated 2 January 1755. was anticipated, the next drainage would not only cause that entire revetment to collapse into the river, but moreover drag down a good part of the ground to the great detriment especially of the adjacent masonry work and of the outer Catthij. These considerations having caused the repeatedly mentioned revetment to be deemed at all times absolutely necessary for the preservation of the Honorable Company's precious ground and communications with the city on that side, and consequently having also resolved to have the same repaired in the speediest and best manner; the Equipment Overseer Ian Warnar Falk was subsequently ordered to make an immediate start on this, under strict recommendations to proceed in this matter with good consultation and a thrifty hand, in order not to burden the Honorable Company with any unnecessary or superfluous costs, and also to make the work, if possible, so strong and sufficient that in the future one might not be forced to renew it annually, unless merely to carry out some minor repairs to it; and since it was observed that the bamboos which had been used behind the upright posts to keep the earth off the planks nailed on the outside had, in the space of more than a year, become entirely choked and rotted, whereby the earth had sunk against the planks and caused such an outward pressure that they had sprung loose in several places and were bent almost throughout; it was ordered, after an inspection was made, not only to properly tighten the outermost planks again, but also to nail good tarred planks inside against the posts instead of bamboos, in order to protect the front planks from the pressure of the earth lying behind them, hoping that the work will thus be able to resist the force of the water. This having been completed in accordance with the aforesaid order and everything having been surveyed and inspected and also approved by the Director himself with the members of the council; the cost thereof, amounting to ro/a 316 17/16 or ƒ 475:8: in cash, brought up by the Equipment Master in his monthly specifications, was unanimously approved as not exceeding reasonableness, passed for payment, and the Cashier was authorized to pay the said sum out of the small cash office, and likewise the trade bookkeeper to write off in the books what was used for this purpose from the stores. Captain Boudewijn Moole having represented orally that his blacksmith died on the voyage and that he was thereby greatly inconvenienced in many respects, with an earnest request that, since there are currently two blacksmiths on the Honorable Company's wharf here, one of them might be granted to him and in return such a person from the vessel under his command might be taken ashore as might be thought fit; it was agreed to place the blacksmith Iohannes Fredrik Berg of Stockholm, as he had himself requested it, in that capacity on the ship Thoornvliet, and in return to let the young sailor Josua Flen of Amsterdam come ashore to perform his service here. The said servants sent at the same time their specification of the expenses in the month of April amounting to ro/a 307 1/2 and ask whether the cloths collected there will also have to be bleached and dressed; further indicating the necessity of the repairs to be made to the Company's lodge and warehouses before the upcoming rainy season for the storage of the goods, adding that, according to the statement of the master craftsmen, the same will amount by rough calculation to r/a 25 to 2800, requesting to be authorized to make a start therewith. Whereupon, having deliberated, the first three articles were considered communicated and it was further approved, for facilitating the collection, to transfer again ro/a 15000 by bill of exchange, and to reply to the servants that all the raw cloths there must be bleached and dressed in order to be able to preserve the same properly, provided that the five sorts on which an advance was made are accepted, so that the collection of those linens may proceed, but that, on the other hand, a further reduction of prices is expected on the remainder. Regarding the monthly specifications, the same was approved, and it was decided, in order to reduce paperwork, henceforth to grant to the servants for their expenses to be incurred ro/a 300: - per month and to authorize them for the requested repairs, provided that they do not exceed the noted sum, recommending to them all possible economy in that regard. Next, the Governor made known that His Honour had entered into negotiations with the brokers concerning the sale of the remaining merchandise brought by the ship Thoornvliet, and that the same, after much bargaining, had finally offered the following prices, namely: For the tin: the 100 lb ro/a 40 or [illegible] per cento The elephant tusks: ro/a 150 - 0 - Ditto benzoin: the 100 lb ro/a [illegible] The hides: the piece ro/a 2 – – - - - 7/8 The areca: [illegible] His Honour submitting for consideration whether the said goods should be relinquished for that or not, since the brokers had declared that they could give no higher prices; regarding which, it being considered that the prices offered for the areca and the hides indeed promise little profit, but that this stems mainly from the expensive purchase of the former and the unusual supply of the latter, as this is not a regular article of trade here, besides the fact that both lots are but small and do not amount to a large capital; and furthermore that the benzoin stated on the invoice and written as Cabessa is in fact nothing other than ordinary nitten, and that ro/a 3 more per 100 lb is offered for it than that which was sold last year on 5 February; it was approved by unanimous votes to dispose of the aforementioned merchandise for the said prices in order to retain no remainders. Whereas, both on account of the increase of the Company's vessels and of the garrison, a good quantity of gunpowder is expected from Batavia, and one must therefore consider a suitable place where the same could be stored, because the old powder magazine on the wharf, due to the successive yearly drainage, has finally come to be on the edge of the steep bank and can no longer be used, on which account one was already forced during the past year to bring all the gunpowder into the lodge, where, because of the small space in the powder magazine, which cannot hold more than a good 4000 lb, one had to place a part of the barrels outside the said powder magazine; which was subject to much danger and was the reason why one had already considered building a new and larger powder magazine in the lodge, from which one nevertheless refrained again in accordance with the latest secret orders of Their High Excellencies; the Director declared that His Honour, upon closer inspection, had been able to find no more convenient place for it than the middle part of the ground floor of the pay bookkeeper, consisting of two dark walled small rooms with a [illegible] above it, the condition of which is fully known to the members and is essentially the best place that can be designated for the aforementioned use and can be further appropriated with the least expense; so they conformed with that opinion and it was subsequently resolved.

From Souratta under date 4 January Anno 1755: to have the necessary repairs carried out there by the Master of the Equippage for the better preservation of the gunpowder, as well as, instead of the bamboo fence that separates the wharf and the abovementioned house from the Persian gribus, to erect a small wall 14 feet high and 25 feet long for greater security. Finally, on account of the approaching rainy season, it was also resolved to authorize the Master of the Equippage and the dispenser to carry out the usual annual repairs to the roofs of the Company's dwellings and buildings both within and without, as well as to order the former to send the Company's vessels to their usual mooring place off the garden of Zorgvrij, in order to be cared for there according to custom and to pass the bad monsoon. Below stood: Thus done and resolved in the Dutch settlement of Souratta, on the day, month and year aforesaid. Tuesday the 4th of June 1754. All present, except the honorable Frans Jan Drabbe, senior merchant, secunde and head administrator, on account of indisposition. All of which having been maturely considered, it was resolved to authorize the said ministers to grant the increase of 4 to 5 r/a on the silk patolas of 5, 4 and 3 astas, and to order them to proceed with the manufacturing, considering that the Honorable Company would still benefit by this compared to the Souratta prices; at the same time permitting them to have the requested 4 tarpaulins or covers made for the linens to be prepared. Thereafter, the Director had it recorded that a Persian under the Honorable Company's protection named Rustom Manikdijen had reported to his honor that he had sent one of his horis named the Roepareel, sailing under the Company's pass and flag, to Ommergan, a village situated about 3 coss from Daman, in order to fetch a cargo of timber from there; the same, on returning on the 10th of the past month, was taken in the mouth of the river of Ommergan by the Coolies or Sultanpore pirates, who, being unable to drag it into their lair on account of rising strong winds and rough seas, took 4 small cannon as well as some ship and war supplies from it and subsequently set the hori with its cargo adrift; which, because all the ship's crew had jumped overboard, ran aground near Daman, and was subsequently taken from there by the Portuguese and brought to the aforesaid place; the said Rustom requesting the Company's letters of recommendation for the recovery of his aforesaid vessel, which letter had already been sent on the 25th of the past month to the new Governor, the reply to which is expected daily. From Souratta under date 4 January 1755. have arisen whereas due to a lack of Corporals currently no more than two are to be found with this Garrison, and the service necessarily requires a greater number, it was, at the instance of the Commanding officer, approved to provide therein, and to appoint the provisional Corporals Jan Fredrik Gerling of Wegeler, Johan Martin Taarmarkt, who have served in that capacity, as well as the soldier Jan Pieter Anzon, of Hamburg, upon the favorable testimony of their competence and good conduct, as Corporals at ƒ 14:- per month, under a new three-year contract, taking effect today /was written underneath:/ Thus done and resolved in the Dutch Office at Souratta on the day, month, and year aforesaid /was signed:/ I:s de Roth, J:n Drabbe, J: A:n Sweers de Landas, D: Kellij, O:to Hend:k Ruperti. — Tuesday the 18th of June Year 1754. all present except the Honorable Jan Drabbe, senior merchant, second and chief administrator, on account of indisposition Having read a letter from Pats-mandui dated the 4th of May of the current year, signed solely by the resident Blaauwkamer, alongside a ditto from the Radja and agent Faweertjent, from which it appears that the resident Sanderus remains at Ketsmandui contrary to our positive orders, and it appearing that he is in no way inclined, pursuant to our orders, to go to Nouw-negger under pretext as can be seen in the aforementioned three letters, although the said Sanderus himself proposed in letters of the 15th of January last that it was necessary to send someone to Nauw Negger to carry out the collection of goods there; since then a further letter was written to the said Sanderus dated the first of May, but the said Sanderus thinks fit to answer as little to the one as to the other, which in all respects resembles a complete disobedience; but whereas from further writings of the resident Blauwkamer dated 31 May it appears that at Kets-mandui a formal revolution has begun by the Crown Prince against the prince, his father, we have deemed it best for the interests of the Honorable Company to order the repeatedly mentioned Sanderus to remain at Kets-mandui, and the second from Dara dated the 2nd of June, in which is made known the dethronement of the Mogol named Emmetsja and the appointment of a new one, named Alemgier Sennie, which occurred at the Court, it was understood to keep a record of this. — Furthermore, having read a further letter from Amed-abaad dated 10 June: Friday the 21st of June Year 1754 all present except the Honorable Jan Drabbe, senior merchant, second and chief administrator, on account of indisposition. and to manage the affairs there jointly alongside Blauwkamer and the bookkeeper and second, the accountability remaining for the three of them; and at the same time ordered to suspend the further collection of goods until such time as we have received information that the said troubles have ceased, as our apprehension includes whether the Marattas might perhaps commit plundering to the notable detriment of the Honorable Company, and the servants have already negotiated the Honorable Company's capital and gathered the goods for it, according to their writings, consequently they remain responsible for the same. Furthermore we also humbly insist on being assisted again with a bill of exchange of 20000 rupees, because having already disbursed 2000 rupees on the 18 wiesas and 2000 rupees on the 16 wiesas, only just over 500 rupees remain in cash today; while the work of collection at the outer posts is making reasonable progress, and in these lands one can accomplish nothing without advance disbursement. We are expecting the samples of cotton yarns at any moment and hope to be able to send the same together with the prices to Your Honorable Worships in the next few days; while it further serves as respectful communication that the dethronement of the Mughal Monarch Emmet Sjah has been further confirmed here, and the new king, named Orang zeeb, has already ascended the throne. The Director exhibits the letter, which had already been circulated for reading, received today from Mozambique, along with the report of Pieter Bakker and Arij Frans, not doubting that the members will have understood the improper treatments mentioned in the said report, which is considered of so much weight by the Director as to complain about it by public protest and to place the same in the hands of the Portuguese Director Mr. Joseph Cohen in order that this quickly be made known both in Goa and in Europe as soon as possible, with which all the members concurred. The number of judicial members being much reduced by the departure of several of them, it was therefore approved to replenish them again, and to that end not only to introduce the principal skipper and Equipagiemaster Jan Warnar Falk, together with Ensign Harmen Amesbeek, in place of their predecessors into the Council of Justice, but also to appoint as permanent members of that body the bookkeeper and second warehouse master Johan Jacob Hes, as well as the head surgeon of the Hospital, Reijnier Bouschut. Underneath stood: Thus done and resolved in the Dutch Trading Post Surat on the day, month, and year aforesaid. The Director informs the members of the meeting that the ordinary yearly muster was properly held, as appears from the presented muster rolls, which show that the strength of the men here and at the subordinate trading posts consists of 182 Europeans and 38 Buginese, as well as 181 native servants. Furthermore, the Director communicates that the wall that separates the Persian Gribes is not only finished, but that one side of the bamboo warehouse adjacent to it has also been converted into a sufficient stone wall to a length of 18 ells. From Souratta, dated 4 January Anno 1755. all the collected returns, without exception, can be embarked; this remaining to their account, as well as the rest that has not yet been decided; That furthermore, upon the proposal of Sanderus by duplicate of the 20th of June, it was approved to appoint the Corporal Christiaan Godschalk Logman as sergeant at the wages of 20 guilders per month and to issue him an act in proper form for this, also approving the advance of 6 months wages to him. Subsequently, by His Honour was submitted a petition presented by the Banyan merchant and broker Gosaaldjent Kapoersjent, reading as follows. — To the Right Honourable Lord Johan de Roth Director of this Directorate, together with the Council Right Honourable commanding Lord and Gentlemen The undersigned Banyan Merchant and Broker Gosaaljent Kapoersjent takes the liberty humbly to bring to Your Honours' notice that he has already for 27 years been in the service of Moses Tobias, Jewish merchant here, who enjoys the Honourable Company's protection; but since in this precarious juncture of time some anxiety has arisen for all well-to-do native merchants, and the petitioner is not provided with a formal letter of protection, and some reports received from the side also make him fear that people might very easily have their eye on him to extort a good sum from him; thus the petitioner turns in deep humility to Your Honours with the humble request that it may please Your Honours to be so good, in regard to his many years of and never interrupted residence under the Honourable Company's flag, as well as his present service with a free merchant falling under the Honourable Company, favourably to grant the petitioner a letter of protection in the customary form. Beneath was written: Doing which, etc. etc. Lower was written some heathen characters, which signified the name of Gosaaljent Kapoersjent. Whereupon, after deliberation and mature consideration of the circumstances, it was approved to grant the petitioner his request, and to grant him a letter of protection in the customary form. The Lord Commander also communicated that, according to annual custom, the muster roll of the Brootchia Factory had been sent by the bookkeeper and second factor there, Christiaan Heideman; and that the same, by a letter of the 15th of this month, had given notice that the 20,000 rupees sent to him had been advanced on the returns to be made in the following manner, namely: on the cotton yarns: 1,000 rupees on the white sawagesjes: 3,500 rupees on the broad baftas: 2,000 rupees on the ordinary narrow baftas: 1,500 rupees on the fine Niquaniassen: 4,500 rupees on the broad ordinary coarse Carroots: 5,000 rupees on the long ditto: 1,500 rupees on the baftas brootchias with gold heads: 500 rupees Total: 20,000 rupees. And that of the contracted linens there had already arrived: 167 pieces of white Lawagesjes, and 55 pieces of broad pale blue baftas; the said factor requesting, for the continuation of the collection, a further supply of money, this further supply being fixed by the broker Gordondas, in a heathen missive to the Lord Director written under the same date as above, at 20,000 rupees. Whereupon, having deliberated, it was decided to remit the required sum of 20,000 rupees anew by bill of exchange. — The Amed-abaad servants having returned a bill of exchange for 1,000 rupees granted here by the Banyan Nagerdas Birsboekendas, forming a part of the 8 bills of exchange sent thither on the 26th of the past month to the sum of 20,001 rupees, because the Banyan Ahaij Sa Materandas upon whom the same was drawn had refused to accept it, the Lord Commander communicated that His Honour, having inquired into the reason for this non-acceptance, had found this to have arisen solely from the fact that the drawer had neglected to notify his said correspondent at Amed-abaad thereof by a private note according to custom; wherefore His Honour, having demanded and obtained that note from the Banyan here, had sent the same, together with the aforesaid bill of exchange, back to Amed-abaad, from where the servants have also reported that of the contracted linens there had arrived again in the past month: 200 pieces of Ponnebegesjes of 18 wiesas 27 pieces of aatwiesas 16 ditto 99 pieces of Guinees. Wednesday the 28th of August Anno 1754. all present The customary prayer having been performed, the Lord Director made known that, whereas several remaining goods were still found in the Honourable Company's warehouses and it was necessary to make all possible space for the cargoes of the ships expected before long, his Honour had considered clearing those entries from the books under the last day of this month, and to that end engaging the brokers to relieve the Honourable Company thereof, and the same had also, after much bargaining, finally offered the following prices, namely: for the nutmeg oil, the lb ro/a 20:—: — for cloves, ro/a 42:½: — for elephant tusks of Mozambique, the 100, ro/a 150: —: — for cowries of Ketsmandui, the 100, ro/a 4:¾: — for chanks, the 100 pcs, ro/a 7:-:- for borax, the 26 lb, ro/a 20: —: — Which prices, having been reconsidered with the required attention, it was approved to cede the aforementioned goods for that amount and to congratulate the brokers on the purchase, all the more because almost no one wanted them and what had still been offered was found to be far below the bid of the brokers. His Honour had, in answer to all that is aforementioned, sent off the requested ro/a 25000:- in 7 bills of exchange and granted permission to take the above-mentioned specification into the small books; with which the assembled members conformed. Subsequently was read a missive from the above-mentioned Ahmedabad chief Marten Huijsvoorn, written at Jambusar on the 20th of this month, wherein he gives notice of his partly futile journey made thither, because the prominent Bania Hanna Retting, who has been favoured with the district of Jambusar by the Cewas General Aanna Sawaij, was not to return from Poona for another 15 to 20 days. Wherefore he had to content himself with presenting the Honourable Company's obtained prerogatives to his son and general manager and writing a letter to his father, the answer to which would be sent to him at Ahmedabad. A good success is all the less to be doubted because the aforementioned Manna Retting has always been a friend of the Honourable Company. Furthermore, on the way he had made the acquaintance and friendship of one of the greatest Cooly robbers of Dewan named Randsoer Baria, whose lands one must absolutely pass and of whom one had in former days been not a little afraid, and had also received all assurances regarding the cafila. So that he now believed to have set the strings in order and was about to proceed promptly to the village of Nadiad to inspect the linens, etc. Whereupon no other resolution was taken than that one would await the answer of Nanna Retting, together with the elucidations promised at the end concerning the departure of the cafila via Jambusar. And whereas the Broach factor Christiaan Heideman, under notification that the Governor there, Neek Alem-chan, finding himself very weak, had invested his brother and Naib named Mogulbeek with a robe of honor and subsequently publicly presented him to succeed in the government after his death, as well as that the new city governor had formally given notice of his elevation to the said factor, requests permission to go wait upon and congratulate the latter, as well as on that occasion to be allowed to present the customary Nazar or sight-offering of ro/a 7., it was unanimously consented thereto. Further, there was exhibited and brought to reading a formal protest against the actions of the Lord Captain-General of Mozambique concerning the crew and cash salvaged from the wrecked ship Bredenhof and detained at Mozambique, drawn up in conformity with the resolution of 26 June last and reading as follows: The Honorable Company's ship Bredenhof from the Zeeland Chamber, destined for Ceylon, [illegible] of that vessel together with some salvaged crew having arrived at Surat in the month of October following, and nearly at the same time another man from the said ship coming from Mozambique, who having jointly made known the accident that befell that keel to the Dutch Director and Council, the latter with the addition that the skipper Jan Nielson and the remaining salvaged ship's crew to the number of 111 heads were at Mozambique, as also subsequently appeared from a missive written on that occasion to the said Director by the Portuguese Captain Tristas Bernardo Coutinho, accompanying this in copy under Letter A, it was immediately resolved, for the retrieval of the said sailors and the fishing up of the cash thrown overboard, to send thither the smalschip De Jonge Susanna as soon as the season should be suitable for that voyage, just as that vessel actually departed on the expedition in the beginning of January of this year, taking along a letter to the Lord Captain-General of Mozambique, Francisco de Mello de Castro, whereof a copy is here under Letter B. [illegible] pursuant to the said in the aforesaid missive under Letter A, that this expedition [illegible] whereas the aforesaid smalschip in the beginning of last [illegible] has returned, bringing along only a letter from the Lord Captain, [illegible] with compliments and vain assurances which by the outcome [illegible]. From Surat, under date 4 January Anno 1755. offices in India, was able to think fit not only to return to Europe, but also, as is alleged, to deposit the aforesaid sum, though under the Lord Captain General, which, according to the report under Letter D, he himself even acknowledged, from which alone, as well as by the addition of the aforementioned conditions, it remained to better secure the aforesaid sum to the Honorable Company, or thereby to ensure that the money would return to its rightful owner; this being so, one can indeed not deny that the conduct of the well-mentioned Captain General directly conflicts with the intentions of the skipper, who reasonably speaking, in stipulating the aforesaid conditions, could not possibly have had any other than the above-mentioned objective, and no one must suspect him of having meant absurd things at all, that the extradition of that money would also be refused to a public authorized person; yet to suppose that he demanded such promises with such an intention, when matters of honor namely that which in ambiguous words: [illegible] the interpretation must be accepted which is free of defect, that is: if a word or expression is ambiguous, one must always choose the interpretation that is best and most perfect. But just as the behavior of skipper Nielson appears very irregular in several other things, so it is also the same in this, since he took money destined for an office of the Honorable Company in India, contrary to the clear intentions of his employer, and partly, so it is said, back with him to Europe, which, however void by its nature, nevertheless provided the opportunity to refuse the extradition of that sum to those who, by virtue of their office, are always entitled to reclaim the Honorable Company's effects, in whatever place they may be.
