From Souratta, dated 4 January Anno 1755:— From Souratta, dated 4 January 1755. After that was placed on the table and examined a request from the First Chief Surgeon of this directorship, Johannes Matthias Valk, requesting the write-off in the trade books of the chest with medicines brought by the ship Bloemendaal in the past year, as having been consumed both by the servants assigned to this directorship and the ship’s crew, as well as by native grandees and their servants; and it was deemed fit to grant this request. The Secunde and head administrator of this directorship having requested to be authorized to close the trade books as of the last day of August last, this was granted to him; likewise, authorization was granted to the pay bookkeeper to close the pay books. The time of the arrival of the first ships expected from Batavia gradually approaching, it was decided upon the proposal of the Honorable Director to send the narrow-ship de Jonge Susanna forthwith to the mouth of the river, in order to await the ships there according to custom, and upon the arrival of a ship to bring the Captain of the same, together with the papers, upriver as soon as possible; with particular orders to the commander, since some disputes have arisen between the English and Siedie Havis Massoetchan, not to interfere with anything should any disputes or fighting occur between the vessels or the people of the aforementioned Siedie and the English, but solely to care for the safety of the vessel under his command. Below was written: Thus done and decreed in the Dutch Company's Souratta, on the day, month and year aforesaid. Was signed: F:s de Roth, J:s Drabbe, J: A:n Sweers de sandas, d:o Vallij and Oto Hend:k Ruperti. Saturday the 7th September Anno 1754. All present. After prayers were performed, the Honorable Director made known that the precarious state in which the Honorable Company’s affairs currently find themselves in this place, and the latest violence and insult inflicted upon the Company by the Regents, could make everyone understand that the total ruin of this formerly so renowned trading place was approaching with great strides: That to this end one had to remember not only the general decay in trade, which has grown larger from year to year, and that the merchants here have lost more than 700,000 rupees this year due to the burning of the richly laden Moorish ship the Pattejeng, which was destined for Mocha; but also that for three months the Regents have so doubled their violence and extortions against the well-to-do inhabitants, that a part of them have been ruined thereby, others out of fear of suffering a similar fate have retired with their most available assets, and have also partially made considerable bankruptcies; and those who are still in bonis, rather than employing their money in trade and thereby being reported to the Government as capitalists, subsequently also to be despoiled of a good part of their cash (since it currently seems to be a crime in Souratta to have means, and more spies and informants are employed to discover a man who has money than to apprehend a criminal), keep themselves poor and quiet, awaiting only a suitable opportunity to flee the threatening storm, indeed some even, according to the usual custom in these lands, have secretly buried their money in the earth: That, merely to give an outline of the aforementioned extortions since the last day of May last, it was a well-known matter that they had forced the English supplier to pay 20,000 rupees, the jeweller Capoertjent 32,000 rupees, the Banyan Roegnadas zekissendas 21,000 rupees, another named Bagoaandas Randat 11,000 rupees, the Banyan Lala Likmidas 17,000 rupees, another by name of Sakker-saa 5,000 rupees, furthermore the Bohra merchant Baijsien 15,000 rupees, another named Imaël Thepias 7,000 rupees, and another two of the same merchants in partnership 31,000 rupees, also two Indian merchants 7,000 rupees, besides various lesser items of 500, 1000 rupees, etc., together amounting to more than 40,000 rupees; but that the bankruptcies, caused both on the occasion of the above-mentioned extortions and by suffered losses in trade solely since the last day of July of this year, came to a considerably larger sum, namely 1,527,000 rupees, the bankruptcy of the Banyan zakker-saa being 75,000 rupees, that of

From Souratta under date 4 January 1755. the jewelers wemmalie Tjet=pet ro/a 20'000:- and from Dipa Preemtjents ro/a 17000:—, those of the money changers Bagoaandas Bamdas r:o/a 25000:— from zala Sikmidas ro/a 135000, from Gosaal=molk ro/a 43000:—, from wanna„baij wemmalie ro/a 40'000 and from Roegnadas zekissendat ro/a 100000: - those of the Sindhi merchants Heda-tulla ro/a 40000: - and from Hazie Ismaal ro/a 35000:— to which are further added some minor bankruptcies, together being estimated at ro/a 47000: — and the loss at sea suffered by the merchants of this city, to the amount of ro/a 950'000: - that from the above-specified extortions it became evident that the Regents, notwithstanding the Royal Firmans, had not hesitated to extort money even from a man who was under the protection and in the service of one of the European Nations established here, without all remonstrances and protests made against it having been capable of preventing such; that it was indeed true that the merchants and servants resorting under the Dutch flag had for the present remained unmolested, but that one had more reason than ever to fear that they might possibly also have a turn, because the regents, who have almost entirely withdrawn themselves from the obedience of the court, will henceforth also have little hesitation to violate the Privileges, prerogatives, and Immunities of the foreign Nations, as often as they shall imagine such to agree with their private views, as they have already made a good beginning therewith: That all that which is aforesaid, and the general decay of Credit caused thereby within this previously so flourishing merchant city, where at present all purses are closed and no one is trusted any longer, indicates more than too clearly that Trade lies moribund; the more so, if it is the truth, as the rumors go and the actual conduct of the Regents for some time seems not unclearly to demonstrate, that their perverse and corrupt statecraft tends to make themselves, as much as possible, master of all the money here, and to exhaust the Inhabitants to such an extent, as well as to diminish Trade, that Souratta may be below the envy and jealousy of others, and thus all their Competitors may lose the desire to take much trouble to become possessors of a ruined and destitute Place, which, when commerce has once chosen its seat elsewhere, will never again become what it was in earlier times; they imagining this to be the only and surest means not only to remain in possession, but also to make it hereditary in their families, and that there will always still remain enough Inhabitants and Trade to provide an object for their extortions: That it is moreover certain that the Marhetties, who daily increase in power and prestige, will at one time or another seize Souratta by force, just as they have done with amed=abaad, and that they will not let themselves be bought off with some Lacs of rupees as in previous Years, but will formally besiege the same, and not break camp again before and until they shall have made themselves master of the city, very good reports coming from all sides that they are making the required preparations for this expedition, and are to be aided therein by the English: That if these peoples come to enclose the city both by water and by land, Trade will have to come to a complete standstill, and all traffic cease, whereby the Honorable Company would suffer so much greater detriment because the Marhetties proceed slowly in their sieges, and much time is required before they take a city that is provided with double walls and moats, also a good castle and sufficient artillery, since they seek to compel such places more by cutting off all victuals than by open force, so that commerce could easily remain inactive for more than a full Year: That in the meantime the English, being in understanding with Nanna, the prince of the Marhetties, would profit from that interposition to carry on and expand their Trade everywhere to the greatest prejudice of the Honorable Company, they having been in negotiation for some time with that prince, to whom they sent two deputies from the council at Bombaij and, according to good and reliable reports, have concluded the entered negotiation completely to their satisfaction: That the consideration of all the Above with its consequences made His Honor very uneasy, and had caused him to think of means to counter our Competitors in their pernicious designs in time; but that before expressing himself further thereon, he recommended secrecy in the highest and most sacred manner to all members of the assembly, to the end that the salutary propositions which His Honor wished to make, and the resolutions to be taken thereon, might not ever be frustrated by an untimely leak.

Whereupon the members, having unanimously declared that, besides the general obligation of secrecy resting upon them by virtue of their office and service, they gave their word of honor to the Lord Commander in particular with relation to this important matter that not a word would be uttered concerning the affairs to be proposed outside the meeting, nor to His Honor himself. After which assurance the Lord Director further proposed that what was previously said ought to encourage every faithful Company's servant who sincerely attended to their masters' welfare, and prompt them to devise means whereby the ruin of the Honorable Company's interests in these regions—as all the foregoing tended to result in—could be effectively prevented, and on the contrary a resource be found to maintain and increasingly uplift the interest of our Noble Lords and Masters in spite of all envious rivals: That His Honor, as has been said, had already let his thoughts dwell upon this for some time, and after having well weighed and considered everything pertaining to the matter, could devise no better expedient than that one should seek to enter into closer and narrower engagements with Nanna, whose good government is generally very much praised everywhere he rules, and with whom the Honorable Company stands on general terms of friendship, not with respect to political matters, but solely with reference to the mercantile: That in order to achieve this salutary objective, it would not be amiss to follow the example of our competitors and send an embassy to that prince: That His Honor would indeed have proposed this already, were it not that he had been in doubt as to how best to manage the affair, and what pretense to give to it, in order to keep this intention secret at least so long until no one could thwart it any longer, since both the government of this city and the English would look upon it with jealous eyes: That it is a notorious fact that Nanna not only generally favors trade throughout his vast lands, but also, since the capture of Amed-abaad, has sought to revive the completely decayed commerce there, and that the re-establishment of a Dutch Company lodge in that city has, to his great satisfaction, not a little aided his views in that regard, since many merchants and craftsmen, who previously had come hither because of the lack of business, have since the arrival of the Honorable Company's servants in that city departed from here again to return to their birthplace, and many others, to escape the violent extortions of the Sourat government, have taken the same path: That the Governor Sankraadje Pandet, who, since the Company lives in peace with him, has given various proofs of affection for the Dutch, also in earlier times made application himself to come and trade there. That this Governor is a favorite of Nanna and has great influence with him, so that by working through his channel toward the above-mentioned end, and thus flattering his ambition, one may be assured of a favorable representation to the prince, especially if one awakens again the old ideas of trade in him through proposals tending thereto: That the true interest of the Honorable Company consists in the expansion of its commerce, and that in order to attain that objective one must not let any opportunity slip: That, as is known, Bassijn is situated not far from Bombaij and provides the English with a means to sell a large portion of their trade goods, and especially European manufactures, with good profit in the neighboring provinces of Dekkan, since they trade them to the Bassijn merchants, who then transport them further inland: That from this it appears that the said place is a commercial town that flourishes more and more daily, especially since many wealthy merchants of Souratta have retired thither, and that our competitors know how to profit greatly from this, as we undoubtedly could also do if we were once established there, both regarding the sale of the Company's goods, which at present must be sent from here to Dekkan at heavy expense, and in the matter of collecting the textiles produced in the said country: That the establishment of a trading post at Bassijn will moreover also be very advantageous for the Honorable Company's affairs in Souratta and cause better prices to be offered for the goods, when the merchants shall see that one also has another outlet for them, besides that such an establishment will serve as a bridle upon the government of this city out of fear of losing the Honorable Company's trade entirely there.

From Souratta under date 4 January Anno 1755. to lose: That the circumstances in which one presently finds oneself here, and which were cited in the beginning of this, make that step absolutely necessary, since such events as have occurred since a short time ago could not have been foreseen with any human wisdom when our humble letter to their High Mightinesses of 16 April of this year was dispatched with the ship Bloemendaal: That in the said letter, in the hope of good sales, based on the favorable appearance of affairs at that time and the promises of the brokers, a considerable demand for merchandise was made, and that one has reason to think that this will, at least for the greatest part, be fulfilled: That the ships from Batavia are expected daily, but that the aspects in Souratta have changed so greatly, not only through the considerable losses that the merchants at sea have suffered, but most particularly through the violent exactions of the government, and the bankruptcies caused thereby, the departure of affluent residents, and the complete ruin of credit and commerce, that one sees no chance of disposing of half of the demanded goods, unless one finds means to help sell a good part of them elsewhere: That the continuing unrest and internal war in the realm of Cutch do not permit attempting such at Zetsmandui, where everything is presently at a standstill and the servants are not even able to proceed to Mandera or Anjaar to conduct the annual inventory of their office; that therefore His Honor proposes to send a trusted and capable person to Bassijn under pretext of another journey, with secret instructions, as well as letters to Nanna and Sankraadje Pandet, aiming to sound out whether one could trade there with security, accompanied by the necessary gifts for the latter, in order, in case of a favorable answer and favorable report upon the arrival of the ships, to send such a quantity and assortment of goods there on trial as shall then be resolved, to sell them not on credit, but for ready cash. The members, having listened to all of the above with the greatest attention, first thanked the Director for his good precautions and foresight, and, being convinced of the truth of the matters contained in His Honor's proposal, jointly concurred with the proposed measures, as they could not but tend to the advantage of the Honorable Company, however the matter might turn out; since the proposed mission, when it becomes known in due course, will not only arouse the jealousy of the rulers, but also that of the remaining wealthy merchants here, and move the former not to trouble the Honorable Company's commerce with any new incidents, and even to give satisfaction for the affront last committed out of fear that one might finally take the resolution to join Nanna openly after the example of the English, and also encourage the latter to make the utmost efforts to offer suitable prices for the imported goods in order not to let the trade of the Honorable Company be wrung entirely from their hands; but supposing that there were presently little opportunity for commerce at Bassijn, although one is aware of the contrary, it will nevertheless gradually revive through the importation of the Honorable Company's merchandise once one has obtained the necessary Parwanas for that purpose, and that many merchants who are weary of the extortions here or fearful of them, and are looking for a safe refuge, will betake themselves thither with their cash, being accustomed to trade with the Honorable Company; besides that it cannot be other than extremely disadvantageous for Bombaij to conduct the Honorable Company's trade in the very place where most manufactures coming from England and a great quantity of other goods which the Honorable Company is capable of supplying at lower prices, and consequently also selling cheaper, must be traded: the aforementioned mission will in any case increasingly conciliate for us the friendship of the ruler of the Marathas and the Governor of Bassijn, which will be of the utmost importance for the Honorable Company, especially in case of a siege and capture of Souratta; regarding the person to be employed in this matter, the bookkeeper and first sworn clerk Hendrik Kronenberg was unanimously selected, as being the most experienced in the language and customs of the country, and furthermore very capable of transacting business with the natives.

It was also resolved to provide the commissioner, as a nazar or viewing offering for Lankraadje Pandet, 13 gold and 15 silver rupees in a gilded box, together with 35 lb of spices and a case of assorted distilled spirits, there being currently no other sufficient gift goods in stock, and to send him with the war gallivat De Waaksaamheit to Bassein, under the pretext that this vessel is destined for Cutch Mandvi. In order to lend more appearance thereto and more prestige to the mission, as well as for defense in case of an encounter, a detachment from this garrison under a corporal shall be placed on the aforesaid gallivat. To observe as far as possible the newly recommended order regarding the prompt dispatch of the ships; to order the fiscal to examine closely the ship logs, especially those of the late-arriving ships, and to conduct all further possible investigation to discover to what the cause of their late arrival is to be attributed, principally whether those vessels were not delayed by convoy, unnecessary and even prohibited calling at places, long stays at such places where they must call according to orders, etc., and to make a proper report thereof, in order that Their High Mightinesses may be informed on each occasion of what went amiss; to obey most submissively what was ordained in Their High Mightinesses' resolutions of 9 August of the past year regarding what must henceforth be observed when drawing up the findings on the delivered cargoes; and to that end to have copies of the said resolutions delivered to the trade office and the respective administrators; likewise to comply with the ordered remittance of cash to the headquarters, insofar as there are no secure opportunities to assist Bengal with bills of exchange; to elucidate Their High Mightinesses at the first opportunity regarding the weight of elephant tusks on which the greatest profit could be gained, as well as regarding the 3 per cent rebate with which the old Basra copperwares must be debited; furthermore regarding the situation of Ketsmandui and to whom it belongs, since for the rest no better and more accurate map of that coast can be given than the one made by the late Master of the Equipage Willem Servies and also taken to Batavia by the former Director Pecock; henceforth to make known in the letter written via Malacca the latest purchase price of cotton as well as what the entire cargo of the ship for China amounts to; humbly to remonstrate to Their High Mightinesses the impossibility of sending the trade ledgers to Batavia with the first departing ships, with the request to be favorably relieved of that order, promising to apply all conceivable diligence to get the books in readiness as quickly as is ever feasible; to comply with the prohibition of all further repairs to the old lodge, but at the same time humbly to request Their High Mightinesses to be pleased to permit such unavoidable repairs as shall be utterly necessary to keep it from collapsing. Regarding the price current, to present most respectfully to Their High Mightinesses the absolute impossibility of changing it monthly, because the delivery must be done by natives, none of whom would enter into a contract regarding this for less than a full year on account of the great trouble attached to it, unless he were greatly advantaged thereby, which was also partly the reason why the administrators were authorized to procure the supplies of provisions and necessities at market value, as even at that time no native wished to take upon himself the risk of constantly changing prices for an entire year except with a considerable increase, by which, as the outcome shows, the Company would have been more disadvantaged than by the method that has since been followed, yet with the upcoming New Year, when public tenders of that nature are usually held here, efforts will be made to form a new price current and to return matters to the old footing according to the intention of Their High Mightinesses; concerning the Mocha trade, and specifically the purchase of gums for China and assigning those commissions to native merchants who go thither for their own account, humbly to represent that this is just as impracticable as the further exchange of ducats under conditions other than those stated in the respectful letter of 1 May, yet otherwise in sending a ship to Mocha efforts will be made to the utmost ability to fulfill Their High Mightinesses' intentions not only regarding the purchase of gums but also the disposal and venting of spices and other goods, in order if possible to increase more and more the previous year's profits gained on that voyage. To have the Fiscal investigate whether the ship's officers, passengers, and other crew members have sold en route, or taken in and brought along, any private sugar or other goods, and upon discovery to prosecute the offenders, and further to act in accordance with the content of the aforesaid resolutions. Respectively to deliver copies and extracts to all whom it concerns, both here and at the subordinate offices, of the instructions as to what charge accounts are necessary for the trade books, and to put into practice and maintain the order contained therein of 30 June of the past year regarding the examinations thereof and of the pay books; as well as strictly to observe the general regulation concerning the promotion and advancement of the servants, dated 31 July following, as well as that concerning the provision of medicines of the same date; together with a copy of the model booklet of unassessed goods to all who have any under their responsibility, and to deliver a copy of a concise military strength report to the commanding officer, in order to be able to regulate oneself accordingly, also letting the memorandum of what may be demanded for the vessels for an entire year, and satisfied at the very most, serve as guidance, as well as the content of the resolutions of 23 August of the past year determining the garrison here in time of peace. From Souratta under date 4 January A:o 1755. to solicit both with Aanna and Damagie for the free passage of the Caffila in the first-mentioned villages, to the end that the same may encounter no hindrance on their way. Thereafter the Lord Commander gave to know that the Pandit or revenue collector of Nanna in this city, having received orders from the Court to betake himself to his master, had requested to be allowed to come and speak with His Honour, and that this having been granted to him, the same had come a few days ago into the Company's garden at Attuwa, and had declared that he was expressly ordered, before his departure from here, to confer with His Honour and to offer him, in the name of his master, his friendship under assurances that he would support the interests of the Honourable Company in everything, just as if they were his own, and that shortly the sealed documents would provide evident proof thereof; which assurances His Honour had answered with the required civility and given the Pandit to know that it was hoped that the measures already set on foot would twine closer the bonds of friendship which the Honourable Company had always maintained with his master, the Lord Director having subsequently clothed the Pandit with robes of honour, and offered him various presents which were kindly accepted; that the mentioned Pandit subsequently requested to speak to His Honour alone, whereupon the same, in the name of his master, made known in confidence the contract that has been concluded between the English and Nanna, consisting of this: 1. That Maaatsjent, formerly Governor of Souratta, would give his daughter in marriage to a son of Nanna whom he fathered upon a Moorish dancing girl, which was also accomplished with great state; Miaatsjent who according to reliable reports departed from Bombaij on the 10th of this month to attend this wedding, having since remained with Nanna, and upon his departure gifted by the English with a fine palanquin, a horse, and ro/a 1500 or f 2250 in money, also awaited at the borders by a Pandit with a numerous retinue, who received him on Nanna's behalf and presented an elephant, subsequently conducting him in great ceremony to Poena, where Nanna resides. 2. Whereupon the Director had replied that he by no means wished to conceal that in full council a resolution had been taken not to unload any ship, in view of the ill treatment met with here recently and the public affront done to the Honorable Company by the government, and that His Honor was not permitted to deviate from that decision unless the members of the council consented to it. That subsequently Ali-nawaaschan had requested His Honor to propose this in the meeting as soon as possible, and to present the sincere dispositions of the Nabab in the most favorable manner, also promising not to argue against it himself; which the commander had agreed to do, and at the conclusion of the conference presented some customary gifts to the said deputy; now submitting for consideration whether, in this state of affairs, it would best suit the interests of the Honorable Company to fulfill the desire of the Nabab, since he seemed to have genuine remorse for what had occurred and declared that he had not been master of that affair, though one could proceed somewhat slowly with it and in the meantime await the outcome of the mission to Bassijn. The assembled members thanked the Director both for the communication made and for his wise and prudent conduct in an affair in which nothing ought to be precipitated; all the less so since there is reason to think that the display of remorse by Safderchan, and the step he took in sending his Naib, occurred with the mature deliberation of the Siedij, and principally arises from the good and timely measures that have been taken, as the mission to Bassijn and the favorable reception of the commissioner there are now known throughout the entire town and in all probability will have contributed more than anything else to the present seemingly sincere dispositions of the Nabab: That they were nevertheless of the opinion that one could and should profit from this, and while slowly unloading, test whether good prices for the goods could be obtained here, thus remaining always master to send a portion of them to Bassijn and elsewhere, and also to cease unloading whenever one wished, or as soon as one noticed that affairs here were not going smoothly; which sentiment was generally approved, and it was consequently unanimously resolved to make a beginning with the unloading of the ships. His Honor having been informed that the fastenings of the holds of the Honorable Company's small vessels and covered horrijs were so poorly provided that the spices and other precious goods, for whose unloading they are suited and always employed, were not much better secured therein than in open vessels, which could have damaging consequences, especially when, with their cargo, at low water and neap tide, they sometimes have to struggle for two days and longer between the ship and the unloading place; he had a record made of this, indicating at the same time that, wishing to provide for this in good time, he intended to commission the two ship commanders currently present to investigate the truth thereof, as they are not only best able to judge it, but also greatly interested in it, and to report their findings. From Surat under date 4 January Anno 1755. to enjoin the ad interim Fiscal Jan Pieter Ohdem to take the necessary information and gather statements regarding this matter; thus his Honour now presented those papers to the meeting, and since it appeared therefrom that the said soldier, while uttering improper words and heavy curses, receiving some cane blows from the Sergeant Major because he would not remain silent, laid his hands on his sidearm, the Lord Commander submitted for consideration whether it would not be necessary, in order to make an example among a restless crowd highly inclined to mutiny, to hand this matter over to the Council of Justice so as to proceed against the delinquent and, being found guilty, to punish him according to the rigor of the laws. Whereupon it was resolved by unanimous votes to remit this case to the Council of Justice and, to that end, to place an extract of this resolution along with the aforesaid papers and the prisoner into the hands of the said Council, to act therewith as shall be found to be lawful and proper. Lastly, the Second and Chief Administrator Ian Drabbe, as President of the Council of Justice, submitted for consideration whether it would not be convenient to rescind the resolution taken on the 26th of June last, insofar as it concerns the appointment of some new members of the said Council, and, owing to the arrival of 4 junior merchants, to substitute the same in their place, which could be done all the more easily because the aforesaid members, for lack of occasion, had not yet been introduced into the Council; which proposal was unanimously accepted, but it was at the same time agreed to grant seats in the Council of Justice to the Master of Equipage Jan Warnar Falk, together with the said four junior merchants. Thus done and passed in the Dutch Company's factory at Surat, on the day, month, and year aforesaid. After the customary prayer, there were initially read two letters written by the Second Broach Factory Factor Christiaan Heideman on the 6th and 10th of this month, of which the first contained nothing of importance except that a start had already been made with the preparation of the packings, and that he hoped to have 65 to 70 bales ready by the spring tide of the forthcoming full moon; and the second, a repetition of the same promises, and notice of the receipt of the ro/a 20000 or 30000 guilders remitted in 7 bills of exchange pursuant to the resolution of the 5th of this month, with the return of one of those bills of exchange, amounting to ro/a 1000 or 1500 guilders, which had not been accepted by the drawee. Whereupon the Lord Commander made known that, the Honorable Company's brokers having been spoken to concerning the said bills, they had assured that it was to be settled within 9 days, and that upon this assurance the bill of exchange was sent back to Broach yesterday, and the Factor was written to on that occasion that the general promises made from time to time regarding the repeatedly recommended completion of the cotton yarns were by no means sufficient, and that this point was therefore once again most emphatically recommended to him, as well as to report weekly on the progress of the collection of this important item. The members thanked the Lord Director for his taken trouble and precautions in this matter, and unanimously approved the contents of the aforesaid letters dispatched to Broach. Whereas on the one hand the continuing domestic unrest in the Kingdom of Cutch, and the applications made on that occasion by the Raja to be assisted by the Honorable Company's batela lying at Mandvi, have hitherto caused the sending of other vessels to collect the return goods lying there to be postponed, since there was reason to fear that upon their arrival the prince might also wish to detain them, and in case of refusal, might possibly not let the goods go, or employ other coercive measures to obtain his objective; and on the other hand it is also still fresh in memory what great danger the vessels sent to Mandvi escaped in the month of November of last year, and that very likely a similar attempt might again be made upon them, since the new hoeker De Jonge Jacob is not yet in a state to convoy them thither, it was, for greater security, in consideration of the above, agreed upon the proposals of the Lord Director to send the ship Bloemendaal thither in ballast as soon as she shall be ordered, both to collect the return goods and to fetch the Commissary Sanderus, provided he has first made a clear transfer to his replacement; and to attach to Captain at Sea Willem Marchis, for making that voyage,

From Souratta under date 4 January Anno 1755. to assign the second mate Arij Fransz, stationed in this Directorate, who has already made several voyages thither and not only knows the waterway and all local conditions well, but also particularly the roadstead of Mandun; furthermore, to lend to the said vessel two 12-pounder and two 8-pounder pieces on carriages, with their accessories, in order to be in a better state of defense in case of an encounter; to that end also, considering the weakness of the crew, to place a portion of the crew of Marienbosch, along with a good detachment of this garrison, on Bloemendaal, and to transmit with that vessel the necessary orders through the officials, as well as a copy of those recently received from Batavia, insofar as they apply to Mandun. And whereas it appears that their High Excellencies have approved the construction of the aforementioned hooker, which was launched on the 17th of the past month and named De Jonge Jacob, and that some equipment, goods, and artillery for that vessel were brought with Bloemendaal and Marienbosch; it was decided to make as much haste with its rigging as possible, and to entrust the command thereof to Sea Captain Willem Marchis, with instructions to direct everything as he shall see fit, and also provisionally to place on that vessel the chief mate Pieter Bakker, from the wrecked ship Breedenhoff, to have oversight thereof under the aforementioned Captain, and to receive and account for the goods that were sent for it from Batavia. But since there are no sailcloth, masts, nor other spars among them, it was at the same time resolved to employ the European timber purchased here from time to time, as far as it may be suitable for that purpose, and to make up for the shortage of topmasts and yards as best as possible from the spare spars and timber that the Company's ships arriving here in the roadstead can spare; also to take from the said ships the new sprit-sails, as being of little use in these regions; also to use the few rolls of European sailcloth and canvas in stock on the repeatedly mentioned vessel, and in place of what falls short, to purchase as much botij as will be necessary; further, to order the chief mate Bakker to draw up a requisition of everything required for the complete rigging to be supplied to him, and what is missing to be purchased or manufactured if possible. Subsequently, the commanding gentleman laid on the table a requisition of findings of the underweight and overweight which were found in the warehouses upon weighing out to the merchant and otherwise on the merchandise to be mentioned in this book-year, or since 1 September 1753 until this date; namely: Honorable, highly esteemed, commanding Lord and Gentlemen. The undersigned Captain-Lieutenant very respectfully requests that he may be provided with the following necessities for the benefit of the Honorable Company's ship Marienbosch; namely: Caulkers to pitch the ship inside and out, with the pitch required for that, The galley to be properly tinned and what is unfit to be repaired, three days of fresh food for the crew, good bread for the same, and fifty laborers to unload and load the ship; hoping that his above request will be granted, he has the honor to be with all high esteem, was signed below: Honorable, highly esteemed, commanding Lord and Gentlemen; lower: your Honorable's humble servant; was signed: Cornelis de Nijs; in the margin: Souratta the 14th of October 1754. Members from the honorable Council of Justice have on various occasions called upon the junior merchant and warehouse master Ian Anthonij Sweers de Landas, to see opened, sorted, and garbled the nutmegs dusted with cloves stored in the Company's spice warehouse and brought from Batavia by the ships Bloemendaal and De Drie Papegaijen, and found them to be as they have the honor to point out to Your Honorable Nobilities in the following, namely: 234 chests Nutmegs dusted with cloves, to wit: 78 chests brought with Bloemendaal had to contain in net nutmegs, after deduction of the King's toll: 9652½ lbs. And after garbling was performed, there were found in good condition: 876, 9655¾ lbs. Thus a surplus weight of 18 lbs. 3¼ oz. Furthermore, two Memoranda were brought for reading concerning the calculated shortages or percentages granted to the warehouse master on the merchandise delivered in the last passed fiscal year 1753/4, brought as well from Batavia as from Cochin-China, which, being found in the required order and in conformity with the general regulation of 15 August 1752, as well as the successive resolutions of this Council, were passed, it being at the same time understood that the aforesaid memoranda are to be inserted herein, and the amount of both to be paid to the warehouse master from the Honorable Company's treasury, under deduction of the above-specified items. Memorandum of such calculated shortages as have been granted here to the warehouse master by the general regulation of Batavia and by the successive political council resolutions, to be deducted and calculated on the undermentioned merchandise that was successively weighed out in this fiscal year 1753/4, namely: Vermilion, delivered according to the finding of the surpluses and deficits: 7503 1/16 lbs.
