Furthermore, the commanding Lord produced a letter from the servants of Amediabaad, dated the 1st of this month, wherein they request to be assisted again with a sum of 25000:— rupees, as well as permission to present the customary nazars to the Governor there, Sempatram, and the revenue collector Sewokram on the heathen Diwali festival, as well as to drape the principal business agents Mitalaal and Telliktjend, alongside the Honorable Company's old broker Gerderdas, with pamris on that day; adding that in the past month of September the following goods were collected, namely: 460:— pieces of 18 visa 1383:— pieces of 8 visa 1813:— pieces of grithole in sort. Whereupon no other decision was made than to approve the aforementioned nazars and pamris. There was also read a petition from the bookkeeper and Mandvi's second Carel [illegible], reading as follows: To the Honorable, Venerable Lord Johan de Roth, Director of this Directorate, alongside the Council. Honorable, Venerable, Ruling Lord and Gentlemen. The undersigned [illegible] with due respect that he, together with the former Surat second warehouse master Willem van Twillaart, upon the demise of the soldier Diomisius Johannas Nijs, occurred in Souratta Anno 1749, was appointed as attorney over his estate, and that, on the occasion of the petitioner's departure for Brootchia, the money resulting therefrom, amounting to 573:— guilders, at the humble request of both attorneys, was received into the Honorable Company's treasury by the Surat commanding Lords, and has remained therein until this day. And whereas the petitioner and his co-attorneys [illegible] of this death on 3 November [illegible] to the Netherlands with the transmission of the vendue roll, alongside a detailed statement, [illegible] and they have been requested by these persons under dates 25 May and 9 August 1753 to remit the aforementioned money to the Right Honorable Gentlemen Directors of the Chamber of Amsterdam where the deceased departed; so the petitioner turns herewith in all humility to Your Honors with the humble request that the said small sum may be remitted by the first shipping opportunity in the most convenient manner to the Netherlands to the Right Honorable Gentlemen Directors of the Chamber of Amsterdam, from where the deceased sailed, in order to be paid out by Their Right Honors to the deceased's heirs or their authorized agents, to wit Gybert van Hogerwoert in Amsterdam, holding power of attorney from Cornelis Nijs, the deceased's full brother residing in Antwerp; and the widow of Jan Baptista Wijs, in his lifetime master stonecutter residing in Amsterdam, after finding [illegible] Whereupon it was resolved to grant this request, and to that end to transfer the small sum mentioned in the above petition, deducting the customary 9 percent by bill of exchange to Batavia, and to request Their High Mightinesses in the letter to kindly forward the said bill of exchange to the Right Honorable Gentlemen Directors of the Chamber of Amsterdam. Present: The Honorable, Venerable Lord Johan de Roth The Honorable Senior Merchant, Second, and Chief Administrator The Honorable Johan Anthonij Sweers de Landas, Merchant and Warehouse Master David Kellij, Merchant and Fiscal Jan Warnar Falck, Skipper and Master Attendant Pieter Otto Hendrik Ruperti, Junior Merchant and Secretary, and Rutgerus van Ebbenhorst, Junior Merchant and Cashier Having begun with prayer as customary, they proceeded to open the dispatches addressed to the Lord Director and Council by Their High Mightinesses, the Lords of the High Indian Government, and sent hither on the ship Luxemburg, which happily arrived here in the roads on the 17th of this month. The commanding Lord having made known that the Honorable Company's brokers Roederam and Mantchergie, wishing to send some vessels with sugar and other goods to Bownager, had requested that convoy be granted to them on behalf of the Company; it was thus approved to grant this according to custom, and to employ for this purpose the narrow-boat De Jonge Susanna alongside the war galvat De Waaksaamheid, with explicit orders to the accompanying second mate Arij Fransz to escort the said vessels to the front of the river of Bownager, and to wait with the narrow-boat before the mouth of the river until the galvat shall have brought the laden vessels inside the river and out of danger from the small pirates roaming there, in order then to return here together without loss of time. Finally, it was recorded that, in conformity with Their High Mightinesses' respected order to send all deserters accepted into service to Batavia, the two soldiers Christoffel Hendriks and Johan Hendrik van Hloornberg, as well as the sailor Fredrik Dahlberg, were placed on the ship Marienbosch to sail with the same to the headquarters. Below was written: Thus done and decreed in the Dutch factory of Souratta on the day, month, and year aforesaid. Their High Excellencies' revered original general rescripts dated 20 August 1754. 3. Extract from the general resolutions of 15 March 1754 concerning the engagement of Arabs and Persians in the Company's military service for the headquarters. 4. Extract from said resolutions dated 31 May 1754 concerning the dispatch of the homebound returns via Ceylon as well as the dispatching or overwintering of the late-arriving ships. 5. Extract from the minutes of 12 August 1754 concerning the Moorish sailors, as well as the course to be kept to and fro by the Surat voyagers, likewise the provisioning of the ships to be in a better state of defense. 6. Extract from said resolutions dated 31 May 1754 regarding the permitted cargo requested by Captain Lieutenant Jan de Lavoije. 7. Five copies of a printed separate instruction for the commanders of the ships going from Batavia to Surat and back, dated 20 August 1754. 8. Which last having been delivered to the Trade and Pay Offices, Their High Excellencies' aforesaid very respected dispatches were read with the required attention, and upon their contents as well as those of the annexes added thereto, it was resolved: First, to express humble thanks to the highly said Their High Excellencies for the sending of this third vessel, in its precious cargo, of merchandise as well as otherwise, as well as for the favorable approval of various arrangements made here, especially regarding the offices of Ahmedabad and Kutch Mandvi, the first of which especially will contribute its share this year to satisfy the requisitions sent over; also for approving the construction of a new hooker, from which one hopes in time to have good service; likewise for the honor they have pleased to do this assembly by favoring yet another member of the same, besides the Fiscal, with the rank of merchant, as well as for the advancement and approval of others; and finally for the clarifications given regarding the dispute that arose between the departed Lord Director and the Council of Justice concerning the pronouncing of criminal sentences, on which matter the orders will be strictly observed; As well as what concerns the sending of a ship on freight to Mocha, for which during this session the ship Bloemendaal was designated, and although there will no longer be an occasion to exchange ducats, all possible endeavors will be made to collect the debt of the royal chamber there, also to that end providing the ship commanders going thither with the necessary instructions; furthermore, the recommendations regarding the construction of new vessels will be most obediently observed, and in the requisition or purchase of spars, or the booking thereof, or in the letters and resolutions, it will not be forgotten to make known how many palms in thickness they are; just as in the first departing letter one will respectfully make known to Their High Excellencies that one did not proceed to the reproached purchase of mast timber except on the one hand because of the good bargain, and because having nothing thereof in stock to use in case of emergency, the case occurring, one would have been very embarrassed, since such European timber does not appear here daily, and if a single one is found, one would then have to pay the very highest price for it, with the humble request that the requisitions made in 1752 and 1753 on that point may be fulfilled from Batavia, because the ships coming from Canton or Cochin China, according to the declarations of the captains, passing Malacca cannot possibly take in such timbers as they are laden and have cargo ports, one being here at present destitute of all spars, and what was in stock having been used for the hooker, and one having moreover been forced, to supplement what was lacking, to remove spare spars from the ships; That henceforth one will also send no more cash to Cochin, but as much as can be spared directly to Batavia, in case one cannot find opportunities to transfer it securely by bill of exchange to Bengal; that one will provision the ship Luxemburg with rice for another 6 months, but suspend the purchase until the new grain is harvested; and have the matter concerning the claims of the absconded warehouse master Willem van Laar examined anew, by the same commissioners who made the first report, being the merchant and warehouse master Johan Anthonij Sweers de Landas, and the senior merchant and secretary Otto Hendrik Ruperti, that the sum of 13,456 guilders, 17 stuivers, 8 penningen the which

From Surat under date 4 January Anno 1755 From Surat under date 4 January 1755 who neglected to credit the interest account for 4 per cent on the collected returns to the General Office, will write off here and transfer to Batavia; also, according to the contract already partly made, to neglect nothing to make the collection of returns as favorable as possible by completing the requisitions made, while the sale of merchandise, and especially of domestic manufactures, will increase considerably if one succeeds at Bassein; it will appear from the new contract here how far one has advanced in reducing the prices of the linens, and everything that can be manufactured more cheaply at Broach will remain with that office, and the entire contract will be divided in the most advantageous manner between Surat, Ahmedabad, and Broach, since at Kutch Mandvi, due to the native disturbances there, no reliance can be placed at present. That regarding the expenses of the Ahmedabad office, one will act according to orders, but that these, especially this year, may run somewhat higher than those of Broach, given various expenses which unavoidably had to be incurred on the occasion of the re-establishment of that office, and which will decrease in the future, of which, however, one cannot yet speak with sufficient grounds before and until one has seen what expenses will have been incurred for the transport of the goods to Jambusar and their shipment there. That one will attempt to engage as many Arabs and Persians in the Company's military service for the main settlement on the aforementioned terms as will be possible, to which end the commission has been assigned to the Merchant and Fiscal David Kellij, as he has the best opportunities for this; and that one will follow, as far as possible, the order regarding the dispatch of the home-bound returns via Ceylon, as well as concerning the prompt dispatch or detention of the late-arriving ships to winter; as also the promised printed order regarding the mooring of ships here locally, as soon as one shall have received the same. That on the next occasion one will elucidate to Their High Excellencies, not only regarding the reporting of 441 bales of cotton on invoice while only 399 bales and 2 bundles were brought to Batavia by De Liefde, but also regarding the loss incurred on the sold vermilion, Chinese quicksilver, Baros camphor, and eaglewood; also to report concerning the bills of exchange often promised by the Kutch Mandvi servants but never sent, arising from sold trade goods, and to observe what has been ordered in that regard in the future. Furthermore, concerning the request made by Captain-Lieutenant Ian de Lavoije, to state that he has brought in plentifully the amount of his otherwise permitted cargo in spelter, porcelain, and Chinese fabrics, but that one is not informed whether his officers traded with him jointly or not. Likewise, to provide a report regarding the condition of the barrels of northern refined copper brought last year by Captain Willem Marchies; and that no cowries from Cochin China arrived with the ship Thoornvliet. From Souratta, dated 4 January 1755: From Souratta, dated 4 January A:o 1755 That the petition of the Bassoura and Gamron ministers has not yet been able to be satisfied, due to a lack of opportunity and direct news regarding the state of affairs there, as one has not dared to risk sending a vessel thither, nor has one received any from there, in consideration of the uncertainty in which one finds oneself regarding that matter, because, according to general rumors, everything that goes thither for trade is detained at Careecq or Bender-a-boucher. Further, to represent to Their High Excellencies by the letter with all respect that one did not proceed to the appointment of a second chief surgeon and his posting over the hospital except out of high necessity, as was set forth in the resolution of the 26th of November of the past year; that one moreover still suffers from the lack of competent under-surgeons, having in all this time not yet been able to find one to send to Amed=abaad; that at present there are no more than two under-surgeons in the entire Directorate, of whom one is here, and the other is at Ketsmandui, which latter, on account of the expiration of a long term of service, has already repeatedly requested his discharge, which one, however, for the aforesaid reason has had to refuse him; that also before this one was sent to Ketsmandui, there were always two under-surgeons here, whereas on the contrary at present one has no more than one; and that besides this, the chief surgeon Falk, being skilled in the language and having been in these lands for a long time, is frequently employed so much with the regents and native notables, to whom one cannot suitably refuse such a thing, that otherwise one can have little service from him; that one therefore most humbly requests Their High Excellencies not to deprive this Directorate of such a necessary subject as a second chief surgeon is, especially because one at present has one at hand who not only possesses the required competence but also applies himself to learning the language of the country, and one would have great difficulty in having the daily growing hospital served as well by a simple under-surgeon as is done at present. This having been done, two letters written on the 14th and 15th of this month by the second factor of Brootchia, Christiaan Heideman, were read; the first giving notice of the demise of the old governor Neek-alemchan and the succession of his brother Mogul-beek, with a request to be permitted to go and compliment this new city governor according to the custom of the country, presenting the customary nuzzer of rupee 7: or ƒ 10:10, as well as for a balance, scales, and weights, in order to be able to weigh the cotton yarns, of which, according to the contents of the second letter, only 17146½ lb in total had been collected there at present; whereupon it was agreed to approve the aforementioned nuzzers for write-off, and to send him the balance, scales, and necessary weights, together with a hoist, by the first opportunity, as well as to write to him that, since strong rumors are circulating here of disturbances arisen in Brootchia on the occasion of the change in government there, he shall above all take good care of the Honorable Company's collected returns, and report at once what the truth of the matter is. Furthermore, it was resolved to discharge the ship Luxenburg, and to supply the same, at the request of Captain-Lieutenant Adriaan de Graff, with a heavy hawser; and in order to store the brought-in areca, due to a lack of space both in the inner and outer latthi under the shed near the Honorable Company's tent where the cotton presses stand, an express shed shall be made for that purpose; but with respect to the sappanwood, it was decided—since on the one hand the same cannot be disposed of here because the city is still full of it and it requires a large place to store, and on the other hand, due to a lack of Chinese or teak planks, one is in great perplexity to provide the ships with proper dunnage—to let that wood serve as dunnage not only in Luxemburg, but also in Bloemendaal and Marienbosch. After prayer, a letter was first read, written by the Cutch Mandvi servants at Cutch-Bhuj on the 7th of this month, first reporting on the state of public affairs there, which, instead of coming to a standstill, seem to become more and more confused with time, and threaten an open war between father and son; and further indicating that they have been prevented by the continuous troubles from taking the customary annual inventory and consequently also the junior merchant Sanderus, according to orders under the last of August, from making the transfer to his predecessor, the head Blauwkamer and the second official, as they dared not undertake this, partly due to the unsafeness of the roads, and partly to avoid raising suspicion with the old Raja, since the city of Mandvi, where the inventory was also to have been made, is occupied by the Crown Prince; adding thereto that, even had the inventory taken place, the transfer could not have proceeded nevertheless, because the Banyan business agent Jaweertjent, under whom they say the Honorable Company's cash has been kept from the beginning because the servants dared not trust it to their own dwelling, has been with the Raja in the army, but now that he has returned, they will ensure that everything is settled quickly; transmitting at the same time a receipt roll of the funds disbursed over the course of a full year to Sergeant Logeman. Whereupon it was resolved to await the end of that comedy played for so long and the effect of the promises made, but in the meantime to reply that, since the disturbances there cause ever more apprehension, they shall have to advise as soon as possible when they require the vessels for collecting the returns, so as to be assured that the ship Bloemendaal to be sent thither will not make a wasted voyage. Thereafter was read a letter from Broach dated the 22nd of this month, whereby the second factor there relates the state of affairs there, appearing therefrom that all is quiet, and that the new Governor of the Court has been given the name of Gertallebchan, adding that since his last letter another 862½ lb of cotton yarn has been collected, and that already 65 bales of cloth have been bound and, with the exception of the stamping, were ready for shipment. The Director caused to be recorded that His Honour had promptly replied thereto that with the coming spring tide of the full moon the vessels would be dispatched to collect the ready returns, with which all members fully concurred. It was further recorded that on this occasion copies or extracts of such orders recently received from Batavia as relate to that factory were sent to the second factor there; likewise that on the abovementioned date a similar dispatch was made to Ahmedabad regarding the affairs there, with 12 bills of exchange being expediting at the same time, amounting together to the sum of 25000 rupees or 3500 guilders agreed upon in the last session for the continuation of the collection. 159 From Souratta under date 4 January Anno 1755. 3 From Souratta under date 4 January 1755. had any distrust in this regard towards any of the members, being well convinced of their discretion, yet could not conceal the apprehension that through some unforeseen accident the matters might leak out before they had the required consistency, and thus our competitors might obtain the means and opportunity to oppose the beneficial designs intended in this work for the glory and advantage of our Lords and Masters; that this was the reason why a secret instruction had been given to the Commissioner and he was thereby ordered, upon his return, to make a secret report of his proceedings to His Honour, as would also be done by secret letter to Their High Excellencies; that nevertheless His Honour, as a token of the confidence he placed in the members of the meeting, would have the Commissioner Kroonenberg come in, to let them hear from his own mouth how advantageously matters stand at Bassijn and what futile efforts the English have made thus far. The assembled members, having thanked the Lord Director for the trouble he had taken in this matter and for the overtures made, were likewise of the opinion that just as secrecy is the soul of all important enterprises, so it is especially in this case where so much opposition is anticipated, and that because matters which must pass through many hands are generally in danger of evaporating before they can come to maturity, it would be best to leave the direction and management of the matter in question entirely to the wise conduct of the Lord Commander, of whose energetic zeal, untiring care, and penetrating judgment they already have so much experience; the members consequently requested His Honour unanimously to be pleased to take this burden upon himself and to act further therein alone, as he shall find proper for the interests of the Honourable Company, without speaking further about it in the meeting until the matters shall have reached their full conclusion. After some mutual compliments, the Lord Commander finally consented to the aforesaid repeated urgent request; thanking the meeting for the complete confidence it placed in him, with the assurance that he would make such use of it as was consistent with the honour and greatest advantage of the Honourable Company, and could at the same time serve to the praise and fame of the ministers of this Direction, adding thereto that His Honour would at least inform them of any change regarding all such actions that had to be done publicly, so as not to exclude them entirely from the disposition over matters that must necessarily catch everyone's eye; that in that case, His Honour, judging it necessary to resume the mission under the conveyance of new instructions, thought he could employ no one better for this than the same person who had thus far performed the business to complete satisfaction: to which the members consented, whereupon Commissioner Kronenberg was called into the meeting and told to hold himself in readiness to return to Bassyn shortly. Since the said Kronenberg, among other things, as a convincing proof of the favourable dispositions of the Governor of Bassijn, was not only escorted on his return by a part of the latter's fleet up to these roads, but also brought with him two soldiers, named Joseph Buijdel and Pieter Belleman, who deserted from this garrison on 27 September last, and having retreated to Bassijn along with their comrade Hendrik Hammaker, were handed over to him at his instance / of whom the latter, however, found an opportunity at night to escape again before he was to be sent on board; the Lord Director produced a translation of a heathen letter written by the said Governor to His Honour in favour of the aforesaid deserters, containing that no harm should come to them, since he had surrendered them only on those conditions, not daring to do otherwise according to his faith: whereupon it was agreed to send the first-mentioned two deserters on the ship Luxemburg to proceed with the same to Batavia at the disposal of Their High Excellencies, and for the aforesaid reasons to intercede for them in the letter to obtain a pardon. From Surat under date 4 January Anno 1755 [illegible] deponent to come, that it in his condition did not matter if he were killed, if they persisted in refusing him, whereby the Governor was finally moved to send him to the cadi or spiritual judge, who after some circumstances accepted him and had him circumcised; That subsequently this new Muslim had claimed to the Governor to have an interest of 500 Spanish reals in the cargo of the aforesaid ship, which frivolous claim the deponent not without difficulty settled at last, upon paying a little less than 100 Spanish reals, of which the Cadi gave him receipts authenticated with his seal; That the person shown after that time no more than once again at the [illegible] to go there where the Court is and subsequently to make a pilgrimage to Mecca; the deponent having furthermore heard that the Governor had given him the customary gifts, and provisionally kept him in his service: wherewith the deponent ended this his declaration, testifying the same to be the pure and simple truth, ready to confirm further with the raising of the Quran instead of an oath. Furthermore, the Lord Commander communicated to the assembly that the commissioner Kronenberg had brought with him from Bassijn a memorandum of goods which the Governor there had demanded for trade, consisting of 600,000 lb copper iron in bars, 10,000 slabs of zinc and 500 steel as many manufactured goods as were at hand. And that his Honour had judged it necessary to communicate this important matter to the members, in order that they might not only judge for themselves what considerable benefits the Honourable Company stood to derive from the trade at Bassijn, but also to deliberate to what extent one could meet such a considerable demand, which exceeded expectations, without curtailing the trade here; that there was no difficulty regarding the spices and the sugar, of which one could easily supply the desired quantity, nor with regard to the tutenag, as there was still a good stock of that mineral, which had indeed been sold to the brokers but had not yet been received by them as they had had no opportunity to dispose of it, but that it principally came down to the copper, of which the imported quantity and even much more had been demanded by the Honourable Company's brokers and would be sorely missed; that one must nevertheless not neglect to meet the burgeoning trade at Bassijn, especially in the beginning, and to profit from the good inclinations encountered there, all the more because our competitors, among other false suggestions, had also sought to persuade the Governor that the Honourable Company was not capable of delivering the goods that were needed there; that in order to demonstrate the contrary one must therefore make an effort and send as much as possible, his Honour being of the opinion that, with respect to the copper, one could suffice with that which was brought by the two ships Bloemendaal and Marienbosch; that prudence would further require loading the merchandise to be sent thither into two well-armed ships so as to be able to assist each other in all eventualities, for which purpose one could use the ships Bloemendaal and Marienbosch, now almost unloaded, the Lord Commander being to provide the necessary instructions both to the captains and to the commissioner Kronenberg, who would simultaneously serve as supercargo; and since it was essential to reply to the friendly invitation of Hanna himself, which according to the custom of the country ought to be accompanied by a suitable gift, and moreover the spices intended for Pankraadje Pandet had remained here during the first shipment, and he had only been promised that he would be remembered in the future, his Honour submitted the plan inserted here of the gifts which he judged ought to be sent both to the prince and the Governor. Dutch lead. fine banca. common flat iron - - - - - - - ditto - - - - having been spoken of last month, concerning the appointment of a new chief of Brootchia and the necessity thereof, there was proposed for this, and elected with unanimous votes, the out of employ under-merchant Lodewijk andries de Jever. And since the merchant Marten Huijsvoorn of Amed-abaad, recalled to Batavia by their High Excellencies, is on the point of departing before the under-merchant Johannes Sanderus, appointed chief in his place, will be able to proceed thither, because affairs at Ketsmandui do not seem disposed for it for the present, and Amediabaad cannot well be without a chief, it was submitted for consideration whether it would not require, in the meantime, to send a provisional replacement for the aforesaid chief to Amed-abaad, in order to take over the transfer and the accountability until the arrival of Sanderus; which, on account of the considerable interest which the Honorable Company presently has in the said factory, being answered throughout in the affirmative, there was unanimously nominated for this the out of employ under-merchant Pierre antonie de Pellon. Subsequently there was brought to reading a letter from the Amed-abaad servants, written the 31st ult., wherein they, after the receipt of ro/a 25000:— or ƒ 37500:- in bills of exchange, besides that of the orders sent to them, report that during the month of October there were again collected there: 866 pieces of 18 wiesa 519 pieces of 8 ditto 507 pieces 282 pieces Salempoeris 459 pieces Guinees, and 35 pieces assorted silk Patholen The Honorable Director made known that upon comparison of the successively reported monthly collections with the full contracting, it appeared that there were still lacking only 3602 pieces ponnebegessies of 18 wiesa, 843 pieces Dorrogesjes of 16 wiesa, 245 pieces ditto of 8 wiesa and 1105 pieces Salempoeris, and that the collected linens already amounted to 131 bales; that therefore his Honor considered that, in order to let the Honorable Company enjoy as many returns as possible for the fatherland, it began to be time to order the servants to pack the goods lying in readiness and the chief in particular to be with the same at Tamboeser at the latest by the end of this month, whereupon the Honorable Company's vessels could also arrive there for the collection, and with the same his provisional replacement, the under-merchant Pierre Antoine de Pellon, to whom he could make the transfer: all of which was agreed to by the assembled members, and resolved to write back in the manner as aforesaid, so that the Amed-abaad goods, in so far as they are in readiness, may still be dispatched with the departing ships to Ceylon. The ships Bloemendaal and Marienbosch having finally left the roads on the 3rd of this month with 190:12:— 50 3/6 to sail with a good cargo to Bassein, taking along the commissioner Kronenberg as supercargo, the Honorable Director made known that this had not proceeded without opposition from the Regents, because they, for many reasons, had seen very unwillingly and with much displeasure that a good part of the merchandise that was already on shore was sent back on board; that at first they had refused to grant any permission at all for this, whereby his Honor had been forced to countermand the meanwhile continuing unloading of the ships, in order to bring them to other thoughts by that means, the more so because many goods were still in Marienbosch and nothing had yet been unloaded from Luxemburg; that this had also had such an effect that they had given their consent to the reloading of the required merchandise, except for the copper, which they said they needed here themselves; but his Honor standing firm upon reshipping such goods as he pleased without any exception, the Regents finally consented thereto with much difficulty, and the said two ships having received their destined cargo, among other things all the copper brought by the said two ships, and the manufactured goods of all three, a beginning had been made with unloading Luxemburg. It was the 8th January that the ship De Drie Papegaijen from Gamron arrived at this roadstead, a part of its cargo being destined for Batavia and the rest for this Directorate. We immediately had the goods intended for Souratta, consisting of old copperware, copper in cakes, sulfur earth, flower of sulfur, best cords and assa foetida, Ruynas roots, dried roses and two horses, unloaded and received according to the accompanying inventory under No. 6, and also debited the officers on their account for what was delivered short, in accordance with the latest orders of Your High Excellencies, which was dealt with according to orders, as will further appear from the resolution taken in our session of the 30th of the aforesaid month, which is to come over with the remaining papers and books per the ship Nieuw Nieuwerkerk, and to which we take the liberty respectfully to refer. At the said session it was also resolved to hold the aforesaid vessel for the present and to load it fully with a portion of cotton expected from Ketsmandui, also in accordance with the latest Batavia orders, of which indeed 773 bales are coming over as appears from invoice under No. 7. Money of the past year, by which it was ordered to ballast with salt, instead of using sand as is customary, both the vessel Voorburg and all the other ships which we were to dispatch in this year to the Main Settlement, so we, hoping to have done well, added 244,816 lb or 81½ lasts roughly of that salt to the cargo of this vessel, having received from Persia no invoice or other document regarding the cargo for Batavia, which became known to us only through the verbal report of the ship's officers. We express our humble gratitude to Your High Mightinesses for the order which you were pleased to give to the Senior Merchant and Resident Schoonderwoert, in accordance with his letter of 20 December last, to have the copper brought over in transit; but it was to be wished that the purchase price of that mineral, charged at ƒ 93: 7: — for the old copperware and ƒ 95: 10: — for the copper in cakes, had not been reckoned so excessively high, since for both varieties together on average we could not negotiate more than ƒ 81: 14: — pure money per 100 lb maund, sold for ƒ 81: 14: — pure. Although copper itself is currently in as much demand here as ever, since they are directly engaged again at the Mint in striking copper pice instead of lead ones, the old copperware is nevertheless generally either heavily tinned, or very dirty and burned, and therefore not as strongly sought after as other copper. This also caused us to write to Persia as early as in the year 1752 that little profit was to be gained on that trade unless it could be obtained at ƒ 60: — per hundredweight, which we also repeated in dispatches to the Basra ministers dated 7 February 1753. It is true that the Gombroon Resident Schoonderwoert, complaining of the uncommon and steadily increasing shortage of money in Persia, [illegible] Resident, says that one is perforce compelled, unless one wishes to remain idle with hands folded, to accept goods in barter; but how he could still flatter himself, given their excessive assessment, that they could be sold here with great profits, appears incomprehensible to us, since the latest purchase prices of all dispatched merchandise, with the exception of the dried roses and the flower of sulphur, which latter is 8¾ percent less, differ unfavorably from those of previous years by 3 7/8 to 191 ¼ percent. For this reason, pending further orders from Your High Mightinesses, we intend to enter the deficit against the Company's Gombroon account in our trade books and have a separate heading assigned to it, [illegible] to the deficit. The aforementioned Resident has also addressed to us an original bill of exchange for 30,000 rupees or ƒ 45,000, which he gave to two arriving Armenian women, being the rich heirs of the Armenian Coja Nazir who died at Madras in the year 1740, namely his sister Annam and her son's wife Anna; under surety of two wealthy Armenians who likewise arrived with the 3 Papegaaijen, a bill of exchange for ƒ 45,000.

We have not failed, as soon as the mentioned Passengers arrived ashore, to have the aforesaid bills shown to them, which they also immediately acknowledged and promised to satisfy; which, however, has been delayed until the arrival of the latest Cafila from Bombaij, when specifically the acknowledged by the holders Ellis chief of the English here, Mr. declared that he had orders from Governor Bourchier to send the aforementioned women with their families to Bombaij and to pay the bills; which, however, he later, but up to now not under all kinds of tergiversations and frivolous evasions, has failed to do, so that we have had to let that matter take its course, having no jurisdiction over those Persons. We have thought it our duty on this occasion most obediently to comply with what Your High Excellencies, by your Extract resolutions of the 20th of August last, have been pleased to order us concerning the three packages of bunting missing in the year 1746 bunting that in 1746 from the from the cargo of the ship the Huijgewaard, to the amount of f 1847:13:8; to which end we have the honor to annex herewith, under No. 5, the required authentic copy of the missing later bill of lading, together with a report from the trade transferor regarding how the matter effectively stands, in so far as it has been possible to verify this here from the papers. From the enclosed Copy Indent under No. 4, Your High Excellencies, supplies to the Drie Pape- if it pleases, will also be able to see what was demanded for the use of that vessel by Captain Bastiaan Verdoes, of which, however, no more has been supplied to him than the cited articles, because he testified that he had an absolute need of them; besides a further 3066 lb of Rice, since he demonstrated that, at the request of the Gamron resident, he had delivered one last of that grain, due to its scarcity there, from his own provisions to the officers of the ship the Getrouwigheid, who were in the highest need thereof. This vessel would, in accordance with our resolution of the 10th of this month, have set sail on the 15th directly for Batavia, because, it being fully laden, we feared the threatened accountability if we detained it here until the departure of the last ships, the more so since the mentioned Captain assured us that it were. was not yet too late, according to the latest sailing orders of Your High Excellencies, to go outside and thus avoid the danger of the Angria; but having since learned that this pirate was staying with a good part of his naval force around Cape St. Jan, in order, according to annual custom, to wait for the Persian and Mocha traders, we have found ourselves, for the sake of prudence, obliged to recede from the aforesaid resolution to the extent that we have caused this vessel to wait until the departure of Bloemendaal for Mocha, in order to sail together out of the Gulfs to the west, to the end that these vessels, in case of an encounter, might render help and assistance to each other. Since there were also on board Bloemendaal in all no more than 55 European sailors found, with which that vessel could not possibly perform the voyage to Mocha and back, and subsequently to Batavia, it had already previously been resolved to reinforce its crew pro rata with some European personnel from the other ships; and since the vessel de Drie Papegaijen had contributed its share thereto, we have, upon the verbal representation and request of Captain Bastiaan Verdoes, deemed it necessary to give him 25 Moorish sailors in their place for the performance of the necessary ship's work, as well as having the necessary provisions supplied thereto for four months, hoping that Your High Excellencies will be pleased benevolently to approve our actions in this, and trusting that, by means of the aforesaid precautions employed, Bloemendaal as well as de Drie Papegaijen will have nothing to fear.
