[illegible] referred to the resolution of the 28th of December, while under this entry [illegible] remains to be reported that the curator ad lites and the secretaries of Justice and Orphan Masters have duly rendered proof and account of their respective administrations, as appears from the reports submitted in this regard with the resolutions of the 20th of May and 31st of October of the past year; Furthermore [illegible] lawsuit, and a civil lawsuit in case of preference and concurrence, which was pronounced by the Council of Justice here at Cochin, but appealed by the junior merchant and shopkeeper Hermanus van der Steeg in his capacity as authorized agent of Mr. Jan Haris, former alderman and former captain of the burger militia of the east side, to the Honorable Venerable Council of Justice of the Castle of Batavia, to which the papers in original are enclosed under flying seal. The militia on this coast is at present very weak, and the state of affairs with respect to a certain northern ruler is worrisome, and for that reason we hope that Your Right Noblenesses will by no means take it amiss that, contrary to the order to send them on to Batavia, we have retained the eastern soldiers here. 137 From Malabar the 24th of March, Anno 1755 From Malabar the 24th of March, Anno 1755 in the quantity of 613004 lb had hindered for several days, but at Colchel the servants quickly laden this vessel with 109331 lb of [illegible] and already on the 10th of December last directly dispatched to Gale. This ship would also not have had to lie so long at Cochin, but in the first five days after its arrival, due to heavy wind and rain, no vessels could sail to or from on board. The yacht Ceilons Voorspoed, which, as appears from the letter of our [illegible] dated the 14th of January last, arrived here at the roads on that same day, because due to severe leakage it could not make the voyage to Tutucorin, we had brought inside this river, and of its principal defects, which are stated in a report to the resolution of the 21st of the said month of January, repaired with the utmost speed, and being provided with the necessary provisions, already on the 4th of February last sent back to Colombo with a party of slaves, coir rope, and cowhides. The sloop Maria Laurentia departed on the 4th of November last with pepper, cowhides, and other necessities to Gale and returned from there on the 13th of January. The yacht Buitenzorg arrived here at Cochin on the 9th of February last and now departs again for Batavia with all the pepper that was on hand here and such further goods as are specified at the foot of this and in the bill of lading; We hope that Your Right Excellencies will be satisfied with the dispatch of the ships, especially of this vessel, with whose unloading and loading, as appears from the attached copy report of the ship's officers, the greatest speed was made; The ship Giessenburg arrived here on the [illegible] current and on the 19th thereafter, after enjoying water and firewood, sailed on to Surat. Resolution annotated. The purchase of powdered sugar of the Maria Louisa. Thanks of the shipowners. The other half to Batavia. The officers of Buitenzorg by the bearer of this. Since the ministers of Malacca informed us in their missive of the 10th February past and at the same time requested us to send that sugar by occasion on to Ceylon, as has already happened on that footing. Provisions and repairs done to the aforementioned vessels Your High Nobilities will find noted down in our resolutions of the 20th December Anno past, the 8th and 21st January, as well as the 12th of this month, whereto we accordingly refer, just as we take for our instruction the received extract of the 12th August 1754 regarding the route that the ships going to Surat and returning from there will henceforth have to take, as well as the extract of the 24th May of the same year regarding the provision of board money etcetera to the arriving crew members. The discharged cargo of Buitenzorg, of which a separate bundle with extracts and other documents lies here annexed, is annotated in our resolution of the 12th of the current month, so that we shall make no further mention of it in this. The extract from the minutes of the deliberations and resolutions in the Council of India on the 8th October Anno 1754, annex the report of Commander Rooseboom regarding the use of kapok stones, we have handed over to our Master of Equipage in order to conduct himself accordingly in ballasting the ships being dispatched from here to Batavia, just as we hope that, with respect to the bearer of this, giving him a proportioned weight of ballast will have been duly done already, according to our recommendation. Desertion remains an unpleasant matter, since from the 15th October of the past year until the end of February [illegible]. The permitted lasts of sugar the officers of Buitenzorg enjoyed in accordance with the attached memorandum, and according to Your High Nobilities' favorable authorization, half of the permitted lasts of sugar was delivered there to the authorized agents of Skipper Hagerop, and the other half was at Batavia on this occasion credited for the benefit of Captain Lieutenant Buysch. Furthermore, the owners of the yacht Maria Louisa express their due gratitude that Your High Nobilities have been pleased to grant them at purchase price the powdered sugar carried thither by that small vessel; and we assure Your High Nobilities that henceforth transport to Batavia on the Company's ships will, as far as possible, be refused to Mohammedan priests, and we might add that it is not improbable that this pilgrimage to Mohammed's grave is undertaken so frequently at present because these pilgrims can obtain such fine opportunities to make the journey at their ease.

The English gentlemen cannot see fit to desist from their pretended privilege, but continue with forcing their passes upon the vessels that have already provided themselves at Cochin with Dutch passes, and for that reason we also constrain the vessels that come with English passes moreover to take passes from our Company, as Your Right Noblenesses have very wisely been pleased to order us. The native bark owners have indeed complained about this, but we have given these people to understand that since the English gentlemen do not respect our passes as authentic documents, they had obliged us to have no regard for theirs either; meanwhile we await an opportunity to give notice of this affair to the government of Bombay, under which Anjengo sorts, and to lodge our complaint in such manner as Your Right Noblenesses have prescribed to us. The list of foreign ships that have visited the Cochin roadstead is to be found among the annexes hereof, with a further list which, since the arrival of the ship Voorburg, has been drawn up in such manner as the extract from the general resolutions of the 28th of May 1754 dictates, [illegible] of the Dom Jean Baptista, which caught fire and blew up at the latitude of Ponnani, as appears from the enclosed copy of an account translated from the French language; these [illegible] at the latitude of Ponnani have been here during this fair monsoon, and also two Portuguese ships named Santa Anna Rainha de Portugal and Nossa Senhora de Vencimento, coming from Lisbon and destined for Goa, and belonging to the newly established Company at Lisbon, of which the illustrious founder is a certain Peliciano Velho of Oldenburg, who is said to have already sent some ships to the Indies, with some particulars of this new company still to be found in the accompanying separate letter; namely appropriate answer thereto from 143 From Malabar the 24th of March, Anno 1755 From Malabar the 24th of March, Anno 1742. [illegible] will be adjusted according to orders. namely to indicate the quantity and quality of the goods which the foreign ships bring, the prices for which the same are sold, and what merchandise is in turn purchased by the foreigners. Ready money we have received from Your Right Noblenesses per the ship Haarlem, 50,000 guilders in ducats, rupees, and duits; per the ship Buitenzorg ƒ 38,150 [illegible] ƒ 39,150 in rupees; and from Ceylon ƒ 100,000 in 19,000 Dutch ducats, so that at Cochin and the subordinate offices there is in stock a sum of ƒ 490,000. The stock of ready money is large, the demand amounts to ƒ 600,000. Since from the stock no money will be demanded from Surat, one calculates to be able to petition from Batavia for a full year, as presently done, ƒ 160,000. We calculate that from the sale of merchandise will accrue ƒ 200,000; against that, the funds required for the purchase of pepper, cardamom, and other articles are estimated at ƒ 450,000, and for the payment of the daily expenses, salaries, and so forth, taken at ƒ 400,000, as is further specified in the incoming demand. A sergeant, a corporal, and [illegible] in the year 1736 obtained a salary of 20 guilders, having requested the rank of bookkeeper and having this favorable testimony from all his respective superiors that he has always been a very capable individual of the Pay Office, we have, in consideration thereof and to show the employees that one can make one's fortune through attentiveness and diligence in the Master's service, promoted him to bookkeeper at ƒ30 per month under a new contract of 5 years, in the hope that Your Right Honorables will not disapprove of this arrangement and appointment of ours. From Malabar The 24th March Anno 1755 From Malabar The 24th March Anno 1755 knows and also well understands that it is not in his interest, whose friendship will always be necessary to him in order to choose his, since almost the whole of Malabar could make Travancore into his preservation; We seek as much as possible to maintain the balance of affairs and hope that Your High Excellencies will always enable us, in case of need, to protect ourselves and our property. Although on the one hand one must seek to offer that prince a new draft peace contract, the outcome of which remains to be seen, and even though, in view of the circumstances in which the ministers find themselves, one might for once give in and ratify it, his Highness has absolutely insisted that as was stipulated by contract, there must be delivered to him annually as much ammunition of war as the value of 100 Candies of goods, and ammunition of war against an advance of 152 Per Cent, it would nevertheless not be prudent to make a yearly custom of it, and therefore we would not hope that the Travancorean will also insist on that in that new contract, but keep himself satisfied with cash payment for the pepper to be delivered. Meanwhile, the Cochin kingdom still stands through the braveness of the [illegible] Berkencoor, whom Travancore intends to pursue, but if these two kings should yield, then we fear for a speedy ruin of Cochin, which in all likelihood would have been able to be preserved had the Cochin king not acted against the good counsel of the Company's commissioners, and had the king of Travancore with 35000 men not approached close to Cochin, and thus in the middle of committing all hostilities against that kingdom, the dispute between the Cochin king and his eldest uncle, having arisen through the rendering of a verdict by the Brahmin jurists, having ostensibly reconciled with the king because they knew no other means to get rid of the Travancorean's friendship, holds in suspense and gives no time for his progress. Meanwhile it gives us reason to hope that it will not turn out so badly with the Cochin kingdom when we consider that the king of Travancore, though people flatter themselves that His Highness wishes the Company well, and however much he is currently still out to conquer the Cochin realm as well, causes concern whether that prince, continuing in this manner, might not eventually make himself master of the whole of Malabar, and then also play the master over the Company, or at least cause very detrimental consequences for the Society to arise therefrom. Meanwhile, we are also of the opinion that since faintheartedness reigns so strongly over the Malabar princes that they cannot be moved to oppose him with a combined force and to check him in the progress of his conquests, the Company must adhere strictly to the assumed neutrality. By all political means the balance of affairs should as far as possible be maintained; on the other hand, one must also not fail to take the precaution that one might be able to withstand him if necessary. And in that regard, it has appeared to us with pleasure that Your Honours have dispatched to this Commandement 200 European, 30 native soldiers with the necessary biscuit, and we hope that with the arrival of the same good service may be rendered, the required [illegible] having been added, which old [illegible] the Company formerly allowed to happen without anyone making the least movement to insult a Company. Having arrived here from Coromandel, the bark Het Loo, with 103 packs of diverse linens requested by the Persian servants, in order to take in at Cochin pepper, cardamom, dry ginger, ammeneke or ambel melosk, and in the company of the Surat ships to continue the voyage to Persia; and whereas upon inspection it was found that the said bark had various defects that required repair, and besides that, according to the notice of the Master, some packs on board had become wet, the Commander had immediately given orders to bring the bark into the river and the packs ashore for inspection, in order to examine and repair the discovered defects accurately, as well as to have the wetted linens washed by the washermen and repacked properly; which conduct the members completely approve, and further resolved with His Honour to let the aforementioned bark sail onward to Persia with the pepper and other trade items specified in the Batavian letter of the 15th of November 1753, in company with the expected Surat ships; although His Honour gave notice in this regard that, by all appearances, all the trade goods that one has for Persia In compliance with Your Right Honourable's very respected orders, we, the undersigned, went on board the Company's ship Haarlem, lying here in the roads, to inspect the defects of that vessel; so we have the honour, after the inspection was made, to communicate to Your Right Honourable in this our very humble report, that the said vessel will need to have four seams calked on both sides of the hull on its lower and upper deck, as well as all around on the outboard side; and whereas the ship's officers testify that when at sea its hull was very leaky forward in the bow, which they presume and believe to be under the breasthooks and in the stem, Right Honourable, Commanding Sir. From Malabar under date 24 March Anno 1755 From Malabar under date 24 March 1755 The servants of Cannanoor report in their letter of 30 December of last year that Canarese rice would have to cost 105 rupees the last, if it were delivered at Cochim for the account and risk of the sellers, which from Commani [illegible] The resident of Pananij gives notice in his letter of the 7th of this month that, being inclined to ship about 20 corgies of cowhides to Cochim, the kielikaar of the place had prohibited him from sending anything away, before the Talchenoor had arrived, which prohibition on the transport of Company's goods, under the pretext of the Talchenoor's absence, is again a proof of the Zamorin's ill disposition, which will compel us, the Commander said, to take recourse to reprisals by making the subjects of the Zamorin here at Cochim pay double toll, as that course has already been indicated by Their High Nobilities, but hitherto not taken, for the reason that one flattered oneself that the people of the Zamorin would maintain a friendlier conduct toward the Company, although one was more and more disappointed in that good expectation. The trade and pay books of this Commandery, having been brought into council together with the reports of the commissioners and carefully reviewed, it was found that the commissioners have duly examined the books; that no special mention needs to be made of the outstanding debts and other entries which have been adopted in the specification. The undersigned, having been ordered by Your Right Honorable in the Council of Policy on date 14 December last, in accordance with the honored orders of Their Nobilities the High Indian Government at Batavia of 30 July and 19 October 1753, to examine the trade books of this Commandery of 1753/4, whether all entries of expenses and other write-offs are legitimate and agree with the granted warrants of Your Right Honorable concerning this, as well as to draw up a general statement of the burdens, and whether the expenses could not be reduced in the future and economy observed in that respect, likewise how the outstanding debts stand, namely for what causes, to what end, and by whose order the same were lent out, together with the condition of the debtors, and finally how matters stand with the accounts in surplus or in arrears, etc., take the liberty, according to their humble judgment, to demonstrate to Your Right Honorable herewith: That we made a beginning with the ledger books of Cochim.
