During the meal, toasts were drunk to the health of the friends present, the prosperity of Java under the administration of the aforementioned Lord Governor and both rulers, the Susuhunan and the Sultan, the fortunate success of the Company's arms, and then to the enjoyment of the meal, after which the food was cleared away and a pipe was smoked. His Highness was also informed that His Honour had brought a gift for them, both on behalf of the Company and from himself personally, and tomorrow would have the honour of sending it in with the Commissioner Donkel and Secretary Foekens, if the same should be convenient and suitable to him, over which he showed his pleasure and gratitude, speaking further about indifferent matters until finally at one o'clock, with a glass of beer, one wished the ruler a pleasant afternoon rest and departed, being escorted by him in person, just as at the reception, halfway between the first and second gate of the dalem with the same honour, and conducted home by his children, the Pangeran Adipati and Pangeran Ngabehi, together with Pangeran Natakusuma. While one was still present with the ruler, there was brought thither from Samarang a circular copy and a general missive from Their High Excellencies dated the 10th and 21st of January last, the first speaking of the appointment of His Honour as General over the Infantry in the service of the state of the United Netherlands, along with what must be observed regarding this and the titulature, and the latter of some orders that one must henceforth observe when dispatching that requisition, as well as concerning the brief returns to send them over every three months, and now first 30 to 40 lasts of salt, or as much more as the supply might permit. In the evening at seven o'clock, the aged interpreter Bappa Bastam returned from the Sultan, by whom he had already been summoned at five o'clock, with the draft peace treaty. The Sultan had asked several times during the review, and that even under oath, whether that contract was drawn up in the same manner as the one which the Ordinary Councillor Lord Verijsel (of blessed memory), for whom that ruler still seemed to have a special affection, had concluded in the year 1743 with his deceased brother the Susuhunan Pakubuwana; if so, that he would then gladly confirm himself to it, requesting nevertheless that in the 5th article of the same, the harshness that appears therein with respect to the regents might be erased, reading verbatim as follows: His Highness shall also not constrain any of the aforementioned regents to come in person to the court whenever he is not inclined to do so out of fear or for other reasons; but they shall suffice with sending up to the court His Highness's annual revenues and whatever their lands must contribute, with someone of their family or with another distinguished person from their regency.

In which the Lord Governor, also finding that point somewhat severe and of little consequence, immediately condescended, all the more because such had already been sufficiently decided by Their Honors' missive of 14 November 1752 with respect to the prince; and of which the next day in the morning, Monday, His Highness was notified by the Commissioner Donkel and Secretary Fockens, going to court with the gifts for him, both from the Company and those of no small value which His Honor had added from his own funds, as well for himself as for his wives and children, and likewise for the principal and most distinguished courtiers, who were presented with a velvet jacket and a sash of gold passementerie; for which the prince expressed his gratitude, while the said Donkel and Fockens handed him in turn, in the name of the Lord Governor, the above-mentioned peace treaty, with the request to review and examine the same again de novo, and to check whether, after this alteration, it was drawn up according to the intention of His Highness, so that it might be sealed, signed, and sworn by him with the customary ceremony. To which end they then together stepped from the discussion house into the chamber of the Sultan, where the same, having had the struck-out parts read aloud to him by the interpreter Bappa Bastam, approved the entire contract and thus expressed his satisfaction. His Highness was then further asked whether he could be ready and would prepare to be inaugurated, proclaimed, and hailed on next Thursday, according to his own proposal, as Sultan over half of the Javanese uplands, in the manner dictated by the contract to be entered into; likewise, he was also requested to turn his thoughts to the election of a capable person as administrator of the realm, and to make a beginning with the division of the lands as soon as possible, so that the Lord Governor might depart at the latest on the following Monday; adding thereto that if it might please His Highness to summon Pringalaya regarding this latter matter, that it would also give pleasure to the said Lord Governor. With regard to the inauguration, His Highness answered that it could proceed on the aforementioned day, but that concerning the administrator of the realm, he still persisted in the request already made regarding the regent of Banyumas, and in asking to be allowed to confer with the same once more on that matter with the permission of the Lord Governor; while he promised to speak with Raden Adipati Pringalaya about the division of the lands, in order to make a start and finish of it as soon as possible. The 11th of February having considered, on the one hand, the loyalty shown by that regent during the troubles of the war, and on the other hand, the necessity for the Company's interests that one should have at the Court of this monarch, who only so recently from the greatest rebel and enemy, having come to his senses, has become the Company's friend, a trusted, virtuous, honest, and shrewd man, upon whom one can depend in case of misfortune and always trust that he will look after the interest of the Company and remain faithfully attached to it; and furthermore, that Djajavinata cannot come into consideration for this because of his demonstrated disloyalty, having colluded with enemies on both sides and thus having revealed his fickle nature too much; moreover, also that the Pangerang Pacoediningrat is somewhat too proud and besides is the brother of Natacoesoema; and Maas Rongo again too inexperienced and thus likewise ineligible for that office; he could also, acting according to conscience and conviction, find no person more capable and for the interests of the Company safer nor more trusted in the present circumstances, His Honour then proceeded. The 12th February: On the Susuhunan's side were deputed thereto Raden Adipati Pringgalaya, Ngabehi Sirtanagara, and Captain Abrahams, who having received their mandate to proceed impartially therein, also stood up immediately and went to the residence of the first-mentioned Captain Donkel, in order to make a beginning with the aforementioned division there today. Meanwhile, as the discourse turned to various other indifferent matters, the Lord Governor proposed to the Sultan whether he would do him the honor on next Saturday, when he intended to depart from here again, to accompany His Honor halfway along the road between here and Solo, in order on that occasion to reconcile himself again with the Susuhunan and mutually swear love, unity, and good harmony to one another; to which he was ready and thus having embraced the same, His Noble Highness the Lord Governor on the other hand proposed in return whether he would now also be permitted, after the homage, to go to Mataram to choose a place for his residence, in which respect His Honor said yes, why not, that Major Steenmulder, present here, could even accompany him in this, and herewith, after wishing His Highness a good appetite with a glass of beer, they took their leave and returned home at quarter past 10 with the same ceremony, from where the Pangeran Adipati and Pangeran Ngabehi returned to the dalem under the escort of Captain Van der Poll and Secretary Fockens. All this having thus been accomplished and brought to an end, the Lord Governor, rising from there, took the Sultan by the hand and brought him to the alun-alun, placing him there upon the throne. Article 4. The Sultan shall also not be permitted to elevate anyone to the aforesaid honorary offices of Prime Minister or chief regent, nor to appoint any head or other regents in the uplands, except after prior approval of the highly mentioned Governor-General and Council, to whom the nominees shall be presented in order to obtain their consent, either by the Sultan himself or his Prime Minister, by a letter sent directly to their High Excellencies, or by the Governor and Director at Samarang, after this has been requested and assigned to him by the Court; likewise, the Sultan shall in the same manner not be permitted to dismiss any of the above-mentioned regents without prior submission of the reasons thereof to the Governor-General and Council and having obtained their consent thereto; all to serve as a public proof that the Company and Java shall henceforth be inseparable and as one. The Sultan also hereby declares and assures never to cause the least trouble to any of the regents currently living, nor to call them to any accountability or reckoning over that which occurred during these recent troubles and the conduct they maintained therein; in the same manner as the Company has generously forgiven all the great injustice done to it, he shall also forgive and never take revenge for whatever his subjects may have sinned against him. 41 From Cormandel the 5th of December 1754. 2 From Cormandel the 5th of December 1754 to the detriment of our privileges and prerogatives enjoyed for well over 100 years, alleging that the French nation was confirmed in the possession of Mazulipatnam by an authenticated donation from the Subah of Deccan, and also that the old laws and customs of a land, even all privileges that could have been granted by a previous government, of whatever nature, to native or foreign nations, in trade or otherwise, lapsed of their own accord until it pleased the new possessor to grant them again; but that among those rights and privileges were some that could not be alienated from sovereignty, and if we had profited from such rights under the Moorish dominion, this must then be attributed to the ignorance of that government and not serve as the fundamental ground of their request, since it was one and the same whether sovereignty were violated or the rights established there by the supreme governor of him who was lord of the land, as well regarding minting rights, the lease, justice over the native inhabitant, and the keeping of men or troops in the surrounding places. Saying further that we might wish to bear in mind that, as soon as the French made themselves masters of Mazulipatnam, it was in our choice to remain there to continue trade; we had even departed from there of our own free will; nothing on their part would have made our stay there difficult, and we were still at liberty to do so today; the orders they had given to their commanders and servants would demonstrate that they had nothing more at heart than to live in good understanding with us; but if we could not do so without enjoying those rights which we currently demanded, they regretted to say that, since the very same rights and privileges violated the right and power of their sovereign, they were as little able to relinquish them as to terminate a matter that had to be decided by the French ministry and Their High Mightinesses, and who had also undertaken to do so; they referred again to that tribunal, since the verdict was awaited from there, and believed that we would be of the same opinion. From Coromandel, 5 December 1754. had shown his proof of his deputy status received from here, which was examined for a while by the same and handed back, saying that he could neither read nor understand it; but because there were many gentlemen with Monsieur Moracin, Bloeme had told him that within a few days he would have the honour of coming to speak with him further, which seemingly was received very well, whereupon he had proceeded to the Company's lodge, and as it was then past 4 o'clock in the afternoon, because the mast was rotten, he had the staff raised and the Prince's flag flown, but shortly thereafter two French gentlemen came into the lodge and ordered Bloeme in the name of Monsieur Moracin to lower the flag again, which the same, under protest, having declared he could not do, they had left again, but immediately returned in the company of a sergeant and some armed soldiers, together with a European and 2 to 3 native gunners, which non-commissioned officer positioned himself with the men under his command on the west side of the mast, while a gunner climbed up the mast, lowered the staff and took down the flag, against which Bloeme protested in the most earnest and forceful manner and had informed Monsieur Moracin through those two gentlemen that such violence committed was for his account. In the meantime Bloeme would have drawn up a written protest against this, had he not, beyond all expectation, found himself disturbed by the arrival of the Captain Commandant Monsieur Dukel, who ordered him on behalf of Monsieur Moracin that he would have to leave the lodge and town immediately, against which he opposed him even more and placed before him whether he well knew that such violence violated the free law of nations, since the lodge in which he was belonged to the Dutch Company, and therefore he could report that he did not wish to leave, but the mentioned Captain forced him to depart, whereupon Bloeme immediately sent a message to Monsieur Moracin to be allowed to come to his Honour, but he had him told in a very contemptuous and wrathful manner that he must not come, since he would not be received, but that he would have to depart at once to the place from whence he had come; upon which report the Captain Commandant, taking Bloeme by the hand, brought him downstairs, where he had seen some sepoys standing on the stairs with lances and cutlasses, and having come below, he ordered him to depart immediately without offering any objection, or he would be forced to use other means, against which Bloeme nevertheless continued to protest, but seeing plainly that he had to bow to force, being overpowered by might, he left the Company's lodge in order not to suffer any further insult and ignominy, and departed for Palicol, from where he sent a written protest to the Machilipatnam Commandant, who which 32

Which, together with his aforementioned letter, is respectfully presented in copy to Your Right Honourable Excellencies, with the addition of our humble testimony that the repeatedly mentioned Bloeme has acquitted himself exceptionally well regarding the commission entrusted to him, and thus has made himself deserving of Your Right Honourable Excellencies' precious favour.
