From Cabo de Goede Hoop, the 23 Jann: 1756. heavy cannon with the lighter vessels awaited there to be discharged, have been shipped in the bearer of this, [illegible] to be placed reasonably well in the ship Leckerland, whereby the same has been put in a state to be dispatched today alongside the other two keels. While 't Hof d'Uno and Barbera Theodora are to be dispatched as soon as practicable. Furthermore, for the reasons cited in our humble writing of the 26th of Septemb: last, the following crew along with ammunition and goods were lightened from these three keels now departing, in service of the respective return ships, namely from: Bleijdorp 20 heads of seafaring men 2 pieces of cannon of 3 lb balls 60 round ditto of 3 lb balls 1000 lb gunpowder De Geregtigheid 25 heads of seafaring men 2 pieces of cannon of 3 lb balls 20 pieces [illegible] 60 round ditto of 3 lb balls 1000 lb gunpowder Leckerland 2 pieces of cannon of 4 lb balls 20 bar ditto of ditto 1000 lb gunpowder Having had to resolve to provide the return vessels lying in the roads with various pieces of heavy cannon as well as the accompanying shot of 12, 8, and 6 lb balls, we, considering that besides the breach of peace by the Algerines with our State, affairs in Europe are presently in such a state that from the received and successively confirmed reports from the Fatherland, it was almost indubitably to be established that the disputes arisen between England and France have by now already burst into a full war, our Republic might easily already be engaged in that war before the arrival in the Netherlands of these return ships presently here, and on that account it becomes all the more necessary that the aforesaid precious keels are placed in a state of defense as much as possible, therefore had to resolve to lighten further from the ships to be mentioned hereafter the following, namely: From Blijdorp 2 pieces of cannon of 12 lb balls 20 pieces of bar shot of 12 lb balls 20 bar ditto 240 round ditto of 6 ditto From De Geregtigheid 2 pieces of cannon of 12 lb balls 6 [illegible] 80 ditto bar shot of 12 lb balls 240 round ditto of 6 ditto 20 [illegible] From Leckerland 2 pieces of cannon of 8 lb balls 20 pieces of bar shot of 8 lb balls And in addition to that, to add to the aforesaid return vessels present here—notwithstanding the fact that they have been manned more strongly than ordinary—some crew if needed, in order to be able to use the cannon properly and thus to obtain the required service from the same in case of need, trusting that your Right Honorable Worships will be pleased to approve of this for the alleged reasons. Also, the following products of this country have been shipped here into these three keels now departing, namely: In Blijdorp 25 leggers of Cape wine 5628 lb butter 8 half aams of Pontac 10 small cases of apricot jelly 7 small pots of preserved ditto In De Geregtigheid 25 leggers of Cape wine 4871 lb butter 1 aam of pickled artichokes 1 half aam of dragon-tarragon 10 small cases of apricot jelly 8 small pots of preserved ditto In Leckerland 40 leggers of Cape wine 5 lasts of rye 1 1/37 lasts of fine barley 5 mudden of peas 1 basket of young broad beans 5722 lb butter As appears further from the bill of lading and invoice made hereof and accompanying this. And since the standing grain crop that was recently in the field, through the blessing of the Lord, has again turned out reasonably well, we hope therefore to be able to fulfill in full the petition made thereof by your Right Honorable Worships, as previously cited. Meanwhile, we have the honor to transmit to your Right Honorable Worships herewith two sealed letters containing the secret signals and flags that shall fly from the Lion's Head and Rump here during the coming year 1757, as well as two ditto for the island of Ceijlon, with the respectful request that your Right Honorable Worships may be pleased to have the same forwarded to their proper address.

Which is also forwarded herewith via the ship Leckerland, a certain copy of a sentence from the Council of Justice of this place, stating that Carelsoe and Michiel Matreuw of Mariendorp have been condemned, the first for three and the other for two years, to labor without wages in the Honorable Company's ropeyard on the island of Edam, for which purpose they are now being sent forward with the aforementioned ship Zeckerland; while a certain native named Bappa Carim, who had been exiled hither, is likewise returning to Batavia on the aforementioned vessel due to the expiration of his banishment. The former soldier of the ship and slot of Castelen, Martinus van der Hluijs, who due to his indisposition had to remain behind at this place, as we had the honor to advise Your Right Honorable Grand Worships in our humble letters of the 10th of October last, having since that time very urgently come to petition us by the request accompanying this copy that, whereas he had learned here at this place that his mother in India had passed away and that through this death his presence in the fatherland was necessarily required, permission might accordingly be granted to him to return thither on one of this year's return ships; we have taken the liberty to grant him this, yet however on the condition that his wages, which were immediately written off upon his stay here, remain further written off, and he shall also be permitted to take no baggage with him other than a single sea-chest, in the hope that this may not be taken amiss by Your Right Honorable Grand Worships. However, we have the duty to bring to the knowledge of Your Right Honorable Grand Worships that since the dispatch of our above-mentioned most dutiful recent writing, the following ships of foreign nations have arrived at this Government, namely: 1755. 4 December: Le Saint Contest, French ship, Captain Lavigne Buissen, mounted with 20 pieces of cannon and 184 men, which set sail from Port L'Orient on the 6th of September last and departed hence for Pondicherry on the 20th of December following. 1755. 18 December: La Siana, French ship, Captain Rosboo, under whose command the same, carrying an armament of 20 pieces of cannon and 100 men, having departed from Pondicherry on the 7th of October of last year, sailed onward from here to France on the 20th of this month. 29 ditto: The Hardwick, English ship, Captain John Samson, having been equipped with 28 pieces of cannon and 100 men, which ship, having departed from Madras on the 28th of October last, continued its voyage from here to London on the 8th of this current month of January. 1756. 2 January: Le Maurepas, French ship, Captain Hanmoer, mounted with 20 cannons and 200 men, having put to sea from Port L'Orient on the 6th of September of last year, and departed from this place for Pondicherry on the 20th of this month. 15 January: Fredrik Louis, Danish ship, carrying 16 cannons and 68 men; which, under the command of Captain Adolph Gener, set sail from Tranquebar on the 16th of October last and is due to proceed hence directly to Copenhagen. And concluding this herewith, after having commended Your Right Honorable Grand Worships' highly esteemed persons, along with the important interests of the Honorable Company, to the protection of the Almighty, we remain with due respect, Right Honorable, Grand, and Noble Worshipful Gentlemen, [at bottom:] Your Right Honorable Grand Worships' very humble and obedient servants, [signed:] R. Wherewith concluding this, we commend your Right Honorable Grand Worships' much esteemed persons, along with the important interests of the Honorable Company, to the protection of the Almighty, and remain with due respect, Right Honorable Grand Worshipful Noble Born Sir and Noble Sirs, below stood, Your Right Honorable Grand Worships' very humble and obedient servants, was signed, R:t Tulbagh, S: Swellengrebel, P: V: Reede van Oudshoorn, R: S: Alleman, W:t Heining, C:l Brand, Cornl:s Eelders, I:s de Grandpreez, in the margin, In the Castle of Good Hope, the 24th of January 1756. Authentic copy of the report of the commissioned members from the Council of Justice of this Government who tasted the aforementioned wines shipped in the vessels Ruyteveld and Keukenhof and found them in good condition. Where the two and [illegible] of this place, having set sail from here recently, we have had the honor to consign to your Right Honorable Grand Worships our last respectful letters of the 23rd of that month, to which, taking the liberty to refer, we can inform your Right Honorable Grand Worships that since [illegible] on the roadstead the following three Honorable Company return ships have arrived, namely: 1756. February 4th. Wildrijk with 1 dead, 3 sick, which set sail from the Ganges on the 15th of November past. February 7th. De Spaarsaamheid, 2 dead, 13 sick. Same date. Overnes, 1 dead, 7 sick; having departed together from the Bay of Gale on the 20th of the just-mentioned month of November. No. 6. Two enclosed letters by the ministers at Gale addressed to their High Nobles, the Gentlemen of the High Indian Government, and brought here with the ships Overnes and Spaarsaamheid. From Cape of Good Hope, the 10th of February Anno 1750: Herewith we take the liberty to send enclosed to Your Right Honourable Excellencies per Keukenhof and Ruijteveld the two last secret notes regarding the signal flags that will be flown for the security of the return ships during the upcoming year 1757 from the Lion's Head and Rump here, as well as two sealed packets directed by the Gale employees to Your Right Honourable Excellencies and brought here per the aforementioned forward ships De Spaarzaamheid and Overnes; as also, regarding those who came over with Brouwer, the copies of acts had to be made for a few persons who had to be corrected by us on that ship subject to the further approval of Your Right Honourable Excellencies, to which we respectfully refer. Lastly, as duty requires, we must note that on the 24th of January last, the English ship Delawar arrived here, mounted with 20 pieces of cannon and 140 heads, which, having departed from Portsmouth under the command of Captain Thomas Winter on the 1st of November past, now lies ready to sail again to steer towards Madras. Regarding which hulls, pursuant to what we already had the honour to inform your Right Honourable thereof, we shall now dutifully record that their small arms as well as artillery and further ammunition of war, having been successively examined by specially appointed commissioners, what was found defective thereon was properly repaired and each ship was furthermore supplied with as many pieces of cannon of diverse caliber, sharp ammunition, and gunpowder as they required to be in a state of good defence, as demonstrated by the reports of the aforesaid commissioners accompanying this; and as on all the aforesaid hulls, in accordance with their charter, some crew members were required beyond those with whom they arrived here, in order thereby to be able to use the artillery properly in every respect and to obtain the required service therefrom, and that regarding this it was determined by the chief officers that when the ships of 136 and 140 feet were manned with 130, and those of 150 feet with 145 heads, this number would then be sufficient for the aforesaid purpose: 197 heads have accordingly been distributed over and placed upon the same in order to bring the crews of those hulls to the aforementioned specified number; and whereas the aforesaid hulls that departed from here were furthermore properly provided with all further necessities, both of provisions and equipment stores, and they have thus been able to pursue their voyage from here with complete peace of mind, we therefore hope that they may arrive safely and prosperously without meeting any disasters in the harbours of our beloved fatherland. But regarding the leakage that was found on the Ceylon return ship the Spaarzaamheid, notification concerning the [illegible], we must dutifully inform your Right Honourable that this was caused solely by a general weakness throughout the entire body of the ship, and accordingly could by no possibility be made tight here locally; yet since it was affirmed by the authorities of that vessel that the aforesaid leakage had already been continuously noticed on the voyage from Batavia to Ceylon, as well as from there hither, without the same having worsened at sea in the meantime, and for that reason they raised no objection to continuing the voyage from here further to the fatherland in that manner, it could accordingly be unanimously resolved by us, together with the often-mentioned Commander Vrugt and further ship officers in a combined meeting of the 23rd of February last, to allow the mentioned ship the Spaarsaamheid to pursue its voyage from here in company with the remaining ships, as your Right Honourable may see from the humble missive and the annexes belonging thereto which we had the honour to consign under date of the 1st of this month with the frequently mentioned return ships to the Right Honourable Gentlemen Major in the fatherland, to which we shall for the rest most respectfully refer. Yield of profits and dealt. dispatch of the small vessel Carried forward ƒ 3638:6:— ƒ 27535:12:8. Expenses of ships, arising from the provisions supplied to the Company's outgoing as well as returning ships of salted beef, as well as furthermore for peas, beans, vinegar, and more wine than previously to the return ships in particular; all having occurred in accordance with the orders. Paid ships' wages - - - ƒ 4772:11:8 this lesser amount arising solely from the fact that the distributions of monthly wages made this year to the crews of various ships were so much less than in the preceding year. Total ƒ 4116:17:8 ƒ 45700:9:8 less - - - - ƒ 18244:17:— While it furthermore appears from the aforesaid Trade Books that the net profits and the country's revenues yielded ƒ 136554:14 and thus ƒ 16670:— less than in the previous financial year, which was caused by the following contingencies: Firstly, that a considerable number of the Company's slaves having died due to the smallpox mentioned earlier, a great quantity of their livestock also perished during the winter; Secondly, due to the lower yield of the lease monies; And lastly, that the farmers, not having dared to come from the country for fear of the cited smallpox, the payment of the recognition monies for the loan places, etc., as well as the satisfaction of the tithes, have consequently fallen into arrears; however, since these two items, amounting together to ƒ 11726:8, are to be settled in the new books, the actual deficit in the yield of profits would therefore amount to only ƒ 4943:12. [illegible] of Justice here against Council ditto small ditto saucers less than the permitted write-offs have been found short, the aforementioned Captain Lieutenant Govert Welle and the Lieutenant Willem Leffens, who had been appointed thereto, in conformity with the order, the first for 1/3 and the last-mentioned for 1/3 buyout price, are to be credited to the account of their wages, just as your Right Honorable Worships will be pleased to observe in further detail from our resolution, of which a copy is annexed hereto, taken under date of the 16th of this month; alongside which also goes the copy of the report that, according to your Right Honorable Worships' esteemed orders, was delivered by the often-mentioned Captain Lieutenant Welle regarding the daily operations concerning the unloading and reloading of the frequently mentioned ship Vreedestein and the hindrances that were encountered in both; as well as a certain copy of the sentence passed yesterday by the Council of Justice of this place, whereby the soldier Jochem Kleijn of Oldenburg, being sent with this vessel, was sentenced to labor for the term of 2 years without wages in the Company's ropewalk on the island of Edam. Batavia To as aforesaid per the provision ship Vreedesteijn The carrier of this, the provision ship Vreedesteen, having as yet been unable to continue its voyage from here due to hard southeasterly or contrary winds, provides us the opportunity dutifully to bring to your Right Honorable Worships' knowledge that the small French ship La Cybele, which departed under the command of Captain de Trivan with an armament of 12 pieces of cannon and 63 men on the 28th of November of the past year from Port L'Orient for the Senegal River on the Coast of Guinea and from there on the 1st of January of this year for this place, running aground on the east or opposite shore of this bay on the 19th of this month while attempting to tack into the roadstead against a southeasterly wind. This incident having occurred at nightfall during fair weather and calm seas, it seems one must conclude that the aforesaid ship ran aground at the aforesaid place due to ignorance and gross carelessness by sailing too close to shore; and notwithstanding that by the first undersigned Governor, at the request of the captain of the ship Le Saint Charles present here, with two country boats 16th March De Burgt van Embden, Prussian ship Captain Carel Glaatski, which set sail from the Canton River on the 9th of December of the past year with 30 pieces of artillery and 156 men, and is due to proceed directly from here to Embden. From Cabo de Goede Hoop, the 22nd of March 1756. country boats, an anchor and rope were sent to the aforementioned stranded vessel to see if they might still be of service in saving the ship, and that the said Captain also went there in person with one of our country boats. However, nothing could be accomplished to assist that vessel, as it had already burst, all the masts had been cut down, and moreover it lay so far up on the beach that it was impossible for the aforementioned country boats to reach it. For this reason, the frequently mentioned Captains, foreseeing that the ship will be entirely shattered by the first rough sea, have taken off all the crew and placed them on the aforementioned ship Le St. Charles in order to be conveyed with it to Mauritius. The frequently mentioned small vessel La Cybele having been destined for the French colonies on the islands of Mauritius and Mascarenhas, and having been laden only with some wines, flour, and other provisions for the same, not much of value will consequently be salvaged from this cargo. For this reason, its Captain, having immediately expressed his thanks for the detachment of soldiers that had been stationed on the beach near the ship by order of the Governor, both to prevent all coarse disorders by the crew assigned to it and to ensure that no washed-up goods might be stolen, the said detachment has consequently been withdrawn again, leaving there only a sergeant and corporal with six men to prevent all hindrances that might be caused by any ill-disposed or greedy persons to the men whom the French have hired here to salvage as much of their goods as will be possible. For the rest, we cannot refrain from informing your Right Honorable Sirs that with the frequently mentioned stranded French vessel, the unfortunate news was brought to us that the royal Portuguese capital and residential city of Lisbon was for the greatest part overturned and destroyed by a very severe earthquake on the 1st of November past, as your Right Honorable Sirs may, if pleased, observe in further detail from the enclosed extract of the Paris Gazette dated the 22nd of the same month of November. After this had been written down thus far, just now at nightfall the Bengal return ship Hercules arrived at this roadstead in a very desirable condition without dead or sick, which, having departed from the Ganges bound hither on the 17th of January past with the ships 't Casteel van Tilburg and Den Gouverneur Generaal, became separated from the same on the 28th of that month. On the other hand, the following personnel as well as ammunition supplies have been lightened from the aforesaid hull for the service of the return ships, namely: 40 heads of seafaring personnel 2 pieces of Cannon of 6 lb balls 2 Reams of cartridge Paper 1000 lb Gunpowder. A packet under flying seal described pay account per the ship Cattendijke for Batavia No 29 expense account of what the bearer hereof has received at this place underneath: In the Castle of Good Hope the 8th of April 1756. signed: C: L: Neethling First Sworn Clerk Batavia To the same as mentioned above per the Ship Cattendijke Having had the honor under dates of 19 and 22 of the just departed month of March, by the provision ship Vreedesteijn which departed from here on the 31st of the same, to write to Your Right Honorable Excellencies as the copies of those letters accompanying this will show, we shall, in the hope of their safe delivery, take the liberty to refer to their contents to avoid prolixity herein, and now dutifully record that, in conformity with what was advised in the first-mentioned missive, all possible haste having been made with the unloading of the outward-bound ships Cattendijke and Vlissingen and their reloading with wheat for Your Right Honorable Excellencies' capital, the first of those two keels has thereby been enabled on this date, permitting fair weather and wind, to turn her bow toward Batavia, and the other will also be able to be dispatched thither within a few days. And as we had the honor by our aforementioned dutiful letters, among other things, to bring to the knowledge of Your Right Honorable Excellencies the safe arrival here of the return ships Amelisweerd, De Hercules, Sloten, Haarlem, Nieuw Nieuwerkerk, and De Getrouwigheid, we can now furthermore advise regarding those keels that they were likewise mustered today, in order subsequently, weather and wind permitting, to proceed on their journey to the Fatherland, those from China and Bengal in the same manner as was done concerning those of the first dispatch, and properly provided with further war munitions; and moreover, in order to bring their crews to the specified number, 206 heads from this Government have been distributed among them and placed aboard, so that these keels having thus been put in a state of good defense, we nevertheless hope that they may arrive and land safely in the ports of our beloved Fatherland without hostile encounters and freed from other disasters; while meanwhile the remaining consorts of Amelisweerd and De Hercules are daily looked for with longing. Replying with all respect to Your Right Honorable Excellencies' honored letters of November of the past year and 19 January of this year, we shall now write that the pay account of sea captain Willem Houthuijs, who commanded the ship Sloten, having been debited for the amount of ƒ5922 in accordance with Your Right Honorable Excellencies' honored order, we shall furthermore not fail to carry out the order to deal with the Javanese Soera Troena and Kea Banja, relegated hither and arrived from Bantam, in accordance with what has been written regarding them; as well as, upon the arrival of the ship outward-bound annually for Bengal, to instruct its commanders successively to touch at Nagapatnam and there disembark all the military personnel they might carry for the Bengal Directorate. As you may further observe, if you please, from the attached extract of our Resolution of the 30th of the often-mentioned month of March. And since your Excellencies the Right Honorable have not only been pleased to possess that special goodness, in consideration of the large number of slaves of the Honorable Company who came to die of the smallpox that raged very severely here in the past year, to send 50 head of bondsmen, both males and females, hither, but furthermore also to establish this salutary order that among the same or other slaves to be transported none may be sent except those who have already endured the aforesaid contagious disease, we therefore find ourselves obliged to inform your Excellencies the Right Honorable that the smallpox has now entirely ceased, having come to cease entirely with the beginning of the cited last-past month of March; on which account, pursuant to the proclamation issued on the 11th ditto, a general Day of Thanksgiving, Fasting, and Prayer was celebrated yesterday.
