From Malacca, the 26th of August 1757 From Malacca, the 26th of August 1757 were in the past year with Woelkensdorp various passing ships, which supplied them with what they needed, later had to leave behind. Regarding the felling and obtaining of mast timbers and spars, according to the further advices of the ministers of the 28th of September 1754 and the report attached thereto, it appears to our satisfaction to succeed reasonably well here, provided that the same are found satisfactory in use, regarding which we hope to obtain the requested report shortly. But it has surprised us that these could not have been dispatched because the cargo ports of the said vessel were found to be too narrow, under these timbers of 3 spans, at the same time that according to the aforementioned advices of the ministers received here, 17 mast timbers had to remain behind after they were somewhat pared down at the thick ends to Batavia and one in the year 1754 with 8 three-quarter spars sent to Bengal, along with the incorrect reports regarding their thickness, some necessary works being required with the ship Woetkensdorp. We believe that the said vessel is 145 feet long, and we are therefore surprised that mast timbers of such thickness fall here that the same could not be loaded on a ship of that caliber. The ministers shall therefore have to elucidate us on this matter and at the same time specify what length and thickness those mast timbers were. Although the accusations which the naval lieutenant Sybrand Trop has brought against Captain Boudewyn Mole regarding the sale of various equipage goods might originally stem from a desire for revenge on the part of the aforementioned lieutenant, we nevertheless expect that your Honors will not have failed to carry out a meticulous investigation into the matter, as we have well-founded reasons to be sufficiently assured that such fraudulent sales, despite the penalties established against them and renewed so recently, occur all too often, and it is therefore From Malacca, the 26th of August 1757 From Malacca, the 26th of August 1757 on the 29th thereafter, by the ringing of the public bell, forbidden to everyone on pain that offenders, upon discovery here, shall be punished according to the severity of the case. Proceeding herewith to some other matters concerning this Government, we shall briefly set down here our considerations and approvals. We accordingly approve in the first place that your Honors have ordered the ministers of this Government to make known in their letters regarding the gold and silver brought to them both from the main office and from elsewhere, in how many marks of fine it has consisted, how many marks of fine it was found to be, how the mark of fine was calculated, and for what it was sold or minted, desiring that a similar statement shall be made at all other offices where any gold is collected. Pursuant to our resolution of the 26th of July last, it having occurred to us repeatedly for some time that the ministers and lesser servants, both of this Government and at other offices, by their letters to private persons in this country who have no part in the Company's administration and direction, give notice of matters concerning the state and trade of the Company, and this notwithstanding the interdiction which has been made against it and was further renewed by our missives of the 14th of September 1736 and 10th of August 1729, we therefore order all the Company's servants carefully to refrain from such unauthorized correspondence, which is highly displeasing to us, so that we may not be compelled to provide against it by other means. From Malacca, the 26th of August 1757 From Malacca, the 26th of August 1757 [illegible] Farms under the last day of June [illegible] of the year 1756 Having respectfully and dutifully communicated in our advices of the 4th of February last how, at the latest leasing under the last day of September past, the two under [illegible] the plying up and down of the prahus and the timber from the forests were held over until further opportunity for 6 months, because no bidders were found for them due to the troubles at that time, we now follow up by stating that on the last day of June last, after the withdrawal of the enemies, the same were publicly auctioned for the last six months of this current year, the former being sold for 40 and the latter for 53 rixdollars. And whereas Your Right Nobilities, in your letter of the 17th of November past mentioned in the opening hereof, have seen fit to reject the request of the four farmers for renewal and the previous year's request of the six farmers for a remission or suspension, under delay of the complete satisfaction of everyone's arrears, we therefore, at the session of the 23rd of March, tasked the collector and license master Gilbert to summon those farmers most strictly to that end, and recommended that he use all possible vigilance in that regard, whereupon he made it known that the farmers of the sea and river fish, as well as the betel, had already paid in full, but that those of the poll tax of the Chinese were three months in arrears, those of the plying up and down of the prahus as well as the wood each four months, and that of the gambling table two months in arrears. This he further confirmed in a report submitted by him at the session of the 20th of June, adding that he had sought by all sorts of means, yet powerlessly, to bring them to payment, as they had not only made known their incapacity as completely destitute people, but had also handed over to him the four enclosed petitions, adhering to their previous prayer for a discharge with a humble request for a favorable presentation for the obtaining thereof from Your Right Nobilities. Whereupon the Captain of the Chinese, in a separate petition likewise submitted on the same 20th of June, also insisted most strongly on behalf of those of his nation, for the reason that they were put to work without any remuneration, mostly in the building of fortifications, the clearing of forests, and other necessary earthworks. All of which requests, at the aforementioned session, by reason of their foundation and fairness, we have again thought fit to present very humbly to Your Right Nobilities, as we are doing in the most respectful manner by this letter, dutifully communicating that the outstanding farm monies of the former and also current boom farmer, the Captain of the Moors and [illegible] to the amount of 800 rixdollars, have already long since been duly paid. The said farmer having represented at the session of the 5th of February current, by a petition inserted in the resolution of that date, regarding his request for the lease of the Padang creek, how in former years under the jurisdiction of the previous governors he had been tacitly permitted to send servants to Padang to collect the toll of the creek, but that in the past year such was absolutely forbidden to the then farmer by the undersigned Governor upon the strong complaints of the King of Johor; and although he rightly considered himself included under this prohibition, he nevertheless requested that, if in one way or another an opportunity might arise to allow him to enjoy this creek's lease again without hindrance from that King, this might be favorably put into effect. But whereas Raja Kechil during his presence in the past year complained vehemently, yet at the same time, as it seems to us, entirely justly, about this levy as having occurred in a very unfair manner in his country and territory, we have, on account of the absurdity implied in having tolls collected in places to which the Honorable Company has no property rights, and on account of the disadvantageous consequences that could arise therefrom, not only entirely denied the said farmer his request, but have even strictly forbidden him this toll collection under whatever pretext it might be, and this in the hope of a favorable approval from Your Right Nobilities. To whom we further have the honor to offer herewith in authentic copy the written interests against the defense of the merchant and former shahbandar Van Boekom, submitted by the collector Gilbert on the 20th of this month, wherein it is anew affirmed that the aforementioned Van Boekom tries to deny what is more than all too true, namely that he allegedly did not give him, Gilbert, proper reports for the benefit of the farms of the gambling table of the year 1755, whereas the contrary he, Gilbert, is always ready to confirm under solemn oath; that furthermore, from the petition of the boom farmer formerly sent over to Your Right Nobilities for a remission or suspension of a sum of 8000 rixdollars still outstanding at that time, it clearly appears that the pretense of Van Boekom is false when he says that, upon the handover to Gilbert, he had called all the farmers and asked how many months had already been paid, which answer not only agreed with the farm book, but furthermore also the missing monies.

From Malacca the 26th of August 1757 From Malacca the 5th of August 1757 further report from the council concerning the misplaced trial records lower church having been counted out to him Gilbert, as he declares in good conscience that he took over between one and two thousand rixdollars in debts, including the two months of arrears of the lessee in question; requesting therefore, and for the reasons alleged, in order to prevent his total ruin, that he may be acquitted of this deficit, and that proceedings be instituted against this lessee and sureties according to Your Right Excellencies' highly approved order contained in the letter of the 22nd of October 1742, dictating that those who through insolvency are unable to satisfy the debts of the state must pay with their skin, as otherwise such ventures remaining unpunished, other lessees might thereby be encouraged to act likewise. The Court of Justice, having in due time been notified by extract from Your Right Excellencies' respected letter of the 17th of November last of the decision regarding and concerning the misplaced trial records of the sailor Zoegert Pietersz, has once again addressed us by the attached small writing of the 27th of April and requested a favorable recommendation. The churchwardens, having been ordered at the session of the 5th of November last to submit an account of the cost of the new lower church, submitted the same on the 23rd of March current, showing that it has cost thus far a sum of 6290 rixdollars and 41 stuivers, as may be seen, if pleasing, from the accompanying authentic copy. The orphan masters have also, by a resolution taken by them on the 15th of June 1756, made known that the estate of the deceased Captain of the Chinese Tan Hionqua, having been surrendered after his death by his surviving widow Tsianio to the sequestrator, desperate debt that it may mercifully please Your Right Excellencies for this once to discharge the members of that court from the imposed payment of one month's salary for each to the benefit of the poor, because upon further investigation it could not be discovered who was the person who had misplaced it, since each of the members had persisted individually in the report already submitted in this matter in the past year, and it would be a hard thing for the innocent to have to suffer for the negligence of another. that after From Malacca the 26th of August 1757 From Malacca the 26th of August 1757 to be allowed to sell in the burgher boards after its sale, and the 4000 rixdollars received from the ten persons who, as appears from our resolution of the 9th of September 1754, had intervened for such an amount, there was still in arrears a sum of 4769 rixdollars and 29 stuivers, without the least likelihood of being able to obtain any payment from the destitute widow, and therefore requested our decision; as also that their secretary, for cited reasons, might be salaried out of the orphan chamber and the interest of the pupils' money, and that they be further authorized in future to grant the pupils, instead of one-eighth, again three-quarters percent interest, as was enjoyed by them before the 26th of September 1749, because their chamber having been put on a good footing, barring noticeable misfortunes, the expenses could well be borne without harm to the poor orphans. But at the session of the 26th of September thereafter, we took the liberty of referring that board with its three-part request entirely to Your Right Excellencies; as also the request of the brother deacons made at the session of the 1st of November last, namely for authorization for the sale of the so-called poorhouse, because the necessary repairs, the maintenance, and the revetting of the seashore behind the same could not be made good from the rent, and thus only tended to the great detriment of the capital of the poor; all damages arising from their neglect having at the same time, upon the highly revered letter of Your Right Excellencies of the 13th of September and of the 12th of January 1756, been left to their account according to Your Right Excellencies' orders of the 8th of August 1695 and the 6th of October 1706; while we note that the capital as of the last of December 1755 was found to be 25676 rixdollars and 17 1/4 stuivers, or 94 rixdollars and 7 1/4 stuivers less than the year before; and the account of the burghery as of the last of December 1756 was in arrears 24 rixdollars and 10 stuivers, which has its origin in the fact that the native nations in the past year, having had to stand guard themselves because of the unrest, consequently less lease money was received than in other years. The latest commemoration day of the conquest of Malacca was celebrated as usual on the 14th of January current, after on the 12th preceding, on the occasion of the usual annual rotation, such minor changes were made in the burgher boards and lesser officiants as were deemed highly necessary for the service of the Honorable Company and are to be found in the resolution of that date.

From Malacca, the 26th of August 1757. Regarding the chapter of Company servants, we have the honor to note that, following Your High Noble’s esteemed order, Major Jan Jurgen Feber was granted a seat in the Political Council on the day of his arrival, being the 15th of July last. Likewise, on the 18th following, Military Captain Fredrik August van Marschal was furthermore appointed as a member of the College of Justice, President of Matrimonial and Petty Court Cases, and also Outside Regent of the hospital in place of Captain Stephanus Elias van Stek, who has departed for the headquarters. The latter, by reason of what was noted regarding him in Your High Noble’s most respected missive of the 28th of June last, requested by petition on the 22nd of July a favorable declaration as to whether we had ever been dissatisfied with his conduct during his presence here, or whether he had primarily ever refused to obey the orders assigned to him by us, and that if he had given satisfaction in these two requisitions, this might be recorded in the resolution and granted to him as an authenticated extract to use wherever it might be necessary. We could not refuse him this request because no reasons for complaints concerning the matter presented had come to our attention, as the Governor individually confirms under the assurance that he deliberately did not propose him for the leadership of the expedition to Clewang in the month of December last year, because he judged it necessary to retain him by his side in the Castle so that, if in the meantime any orders had to be dispatched to the nearby outer posts or elsewhere, they might be brought to execution with greater promptness. Besides which, Lieutenant Daniel Poppel in the month of July of the past year, in the expedition to Linga, also at the head of our troops, had conducted himself so laudably that one had reason not only to be very satisfied with his conduct, but also to expect a good outcome from the latter as well as the preceding expedition. On the same day, the aforementioned Major Feber and Captain Marschal were commissioned to conduct, with such military officers as they shall see fit, a thorough and sharp investigation into the cause of the aforesaid shamefully and detrimentally ended expedition, in which they are presently actively engaged, the outcome of which we dutifully hope to impart to Your High Nobles soon. Meanwhile, we have the honor to communicate that with the ship Oost Capelle, safely arriving here from Ceylon on the 25th of July alongside his family, the Senior Merchant and elected Secunde Noel Anthony Lebeck took his seat in the Political Council the following day in that capacity and was furthermore appointed as President of the Council of Justice, Political Commissioner, First Church Master, and Parapheur of the Seal. He will receive the transfer of the matters concerning the Head Administrator at the end of this month, just as Junior Merchant Cramer already did with his former office of shopkeeper on the last day of July prior. Since the receipt of Your High Noble’s very respected missive of the 13th of September 1756, foreigners are again being introduced by Collector Gelbert. Meanwhile, the benefited persons, namely Fiscal Gabriel de Lopes, Equipment Overseer Bellemond, First Clerk of Policy and Secretary of Justice Van Leest, and Chief Surgeon of the hospital Meesper, respectfully thank Your High Nobles for the high favors shown to them, just as the Reverend Minister Van Echten in particular expresses his obligation for the emoluments granted to him again. His eldest son, Assistant Johannes van Echten, who has performed his service here at the secretariat to satisfaction, has, upon his earnest request and in the hope of a favorable interpretation, been permitted to cross over with the bearer of this letter. Likewise, according to our resolution of the 27th of April current, Military Ensign Christiaan Hendrik Pietersz crosses over at Your High Noble’s esteemed disposal with suspended salary, because on the 27th of November last, as the officer on guard, being heavily intoxicated and setting aside all due respect toward the Governor and Captain Van Stek, he openly engaged in such punishable conduct before the main guard as is described in the accompanying attestations given by the since fallen adjutant, a sergeant, and two private soldiers. From Malacca the 26th of August 1757. Historical account and request of a certain gunner's mate of Woelkensdorp could not be legally proven to satisfaction here. While the chief surgeon of the Castle, Rudolph Jeeke, following a favorable confirmation, very respectfully requests to be allowed to enjoy the salary granted here, and the master of the blacksmith shop, Andries Dusscher, after 26 years of faithful service and reaching the age of well over 57 years, for the usual pension, as according to the declaration of the respective chief surgeon, due to weakness of sight and other bodily infirmities, he no longer finds himself in a position to be able to serve the Honorable Company properly further; as well as the collective pensioners for the continuation of their pensions, and the visitor of the sick, Willem van Deutecom, to be relieved from here on account of the expiration of his term. The gunner's mate Lucas van Wasbeek, who was stationed on the ship Woelkensdorp, which in the year 1755 at Battoubara had that well-known incident with the Malays, was at that time one of those who went ashore with the boat to see where the massacred skipper Berg with his companions had gone. But arriving there, he was unfortunately captured by the Malays, though luckily preserved in life, and spent a year in exile there under the well-known pirate Sait Osman until, on the 18th of March of this year, there appeared the English Captain Pieter Gallopin, residing in Bengal, who ransomed him for the sum of 150 Spanish reals, leaving it to his choice either to work off that money with him or to depart hither, provided he first signed a private promissory note. Having chosen the latter, he finally arrived here on a native vessel from Queda, and on the 20th of this month addressed us by petition, requesting that the said 150 reals might be paid from the Company's treasury and his wages during his exile be credited to him. The first we have granted, subject to your esteemed approval, because through this misfortune sustained in the service he has become dead poor and unable to pay, and in case of non-payment, in the course of time during similar unforeseen or other unfortunate occurrences, none of the strangers would be found as generous as this Englishman who would ransom such a miserable person and let him go on a mere promissory note. With the bearer of this, the ship Oost Capelle having brought among other things over Ceylon from Souratta 6250 lb putchuck in 31 bales, the same is now sent back with the same vessel in hopes of a favourable approval, because here even for the calculated price of f 141: 1: or rds 58:37: much less with the proper advance can be disposed of; whilst still in the bearer of this was loaded 31897 lb tin, the remaining unsettled points of the description accompanying this, the trade and wage books are to arrive by the next vessel with Meervliet. High Noble, Right Honorable, and Far-Commanding Lord and Lords, As the eyes from everywhere are presumably most fixed upon the native affairs of this Government, these shall, for this time, make a beginning therewith. And in continuation of that matter to be found in our humble letters of the 26th of August past, sent by the ship Oost Cappelle and of which a duplicate accompanies this among others, we have the reverent honor to communicate that two days after that dispatch, namely on the 28th ditto, we again received a letter from Daing Cambodia and Raja Adil of Rembau, accompanied by 220 tampangs of tin as a gift, wherein they strongly insisted on a token of assurance upon which they could rest assured that the Honorable Company truly meant well with the Menangkabaus and Bugis. This having been answered to them by letter of the 30th thereafter as best as possible, and having furthermore spurred them on de novo to bring this weighty work of peace quickly to a desired end, we obtained on the 26th of September a second letter wherein they communicated their sending of some persons hither to meet all the council members at Tanjung Kling, situated on the sea coast north of this city. From Malacca the 18th October 1757 From Malacca the 18th October 1757 were escorted to the garden of the widow of the late senior merchant De Wind, designated for their stay. The following day, being 29th September, our aforementioned commissioners went to pay them a visit, at which time they were informed that the envoys consisted of four persons, namely the panganwa Calang and pangauwa Sitti on behalf of Daing Camboja, and penghulu Binoang and Raja Lello on behalf of Raja Adil of Rembau; that they had been sent by their masters principally, first, to assure the Honourable Company of their heartfelt desire for a firm and inviolable friendship, and secondly, to inquire whether the Honourable Company's inclination likewise tended in that direction, without being qualified for anything further beyond this; testifying that their principals felt great regret over their conduct towards the Honourable Company, but that no one was to blame for this except Raja Alam, as he had incited and partially coerced them to it; that their masters were inclined to come to us in person, preferably by water because the overland route was almost impassable due to heavy rains and thus very difficult and fatiguing; and finally they requested their dismissal and a letter to their chiefs, stating therein how they, through the friendly persuasion of our commissioners, had been brought through this city to the aforementioned garden, since in this they had gravely transgressed against the order they had received, which strictly directed them to go no further than outside and up to Tranquera Gate, and were thus fearful of displeasure. After they were assured by all decent arguments of the Honourable Company's sincere desire for a proper and lasting peace, they departed well satisfied that afternoon with their retinue consisting of circa 150 persons, and early the next morning, being 30th September, the requested letter was sent after them to their masters, wherein they were also informed that, being inclined to come hither by water, they could undertake to do so without fear, as the cruisers would beforehand be provided with the necessary orders for an unhindered passage for them, as has since occurred. Meanwhile, it having been communicated by the penghulu Hakim on behalf of Dato' Bijaya Sura, head of Muar and its subordinate settlements, how Raja Alam was expected there shortly, presumably to escape out of that river into the sea, we sent, pursuant to our resolution of 10th September, the chaloup De Haak thither to prevent this flight if possible; but this vessel having been found unfit for that purpose due to its deep draft, De Standvastigheid was dispatched thither on the 21st of that month, and in the meantime, by publication and posting of notices on pain of death, the transport of any provisions or other necessities to the enemies has been prohibited, as it was learned that such was being practiced only too much by self-interested persons along the river of Muar where some villages were said to have been pro-Company, though others pro-Raja Alam, but according to the letter received on the 13th instant from the aforementioned penghulu Hakim, are now all united never to abandon the Honourable Company and Johor, and also by other routes. And in order that this objective might succeed better, all such goods have thereby been declared confiscable for anyone who might encounter and seize the same, entirely to the profit of the captor, and a copy of that notice in the Malay language has been sent to the aforementioned head of Muar, with the request that, after it had been confirmed with the Johor royal seal, it should also be published there for the information of his subjects. This being all that we can present to your Excellencies regarding native affairs up to now, as we must wait and see whether Daing Camboja and Raja Adil of Rembau will now resolve to come hither, and then what can be accomplished with and between them, and, according to rumors, also the approaching kings of Johor and Terengganu, for the best of the Honourable Company's interests and the achievement of general peace, we shall meanwhile turn to the inner west coast of Sumatra and settle ourselves there for a moment in the Honourable Company's lodge situated on Pulau Gontong in the river of Siak, from where its chief has sent us, alongside his letter of 11th September past, two pantjallangs belonging to Java, provided with the enclosed passes from Semarang directly bound thither, and a request for orders on how to act with vessels belonging there and coming from places where the Honourable Company is established, or around vessels that might appear there from India's capital; whereupon, pursuant to our resolution of the 19th ditto, he is to be instructed in writing to leave both unmolested, while the aforementioned nakhodas, provided with another pass from here according to their desire, have since turned their prows thither again. From Malacca, 18 October 1757 From Malacca, 18 October 1757:— Despatch of the last [illegible] New chief and further reinforcement Annual inventory The outgoing chief Perak, whither per the chaloup De Salapadjang on 27 August last we sent 10,000 pieces of new round Spanish reals instead of the 15,000 ditto requested by letter of 9 July, as this contained almost our entire remaining balance of that specie, so that, in order not to fall into embarrassment, it is greatly to be wished that Your High Excellencies, upon our humble petition to be found in our aforementioned last advices of 26 August to be provided with a considerable amount of that coinage, will have taken favorable consideration prior to the receipt of this. Appointment of a 2nd mate and some privates The chief Schelling having requested by letter of 2 May past to be relieved from there, both for himself and the assistant Faber, the under-surgeon, and some privates, we have accordingly granted the same to the first-named on account of the expiration of his time at the meeting of 29 September, and likewise agreed to replace the under-surgeon and some privates who are inclined to come hither, but to let the assistant Faber continue there for another year to assist the new chief where necessary; to which post, subject to the esteemed approval of Your High Excellencies, we have appointed Ensign Bartholomeus Meijer, who is to depart thither at the first opportunity. Meanwhile, for the account of the outgoing chief Schelling, there has been left the hiring of a certain private vessel for the service of the Honorable Company at 20 rixdollars per month, as he was in no way authorized thereto by us. Foreign nations While regarding foreign ships and vessels we have nothing else to note than the return on 29 September of the English Captain Hamilton Parkinson from a voyage to Siam uncompleted due to contrary winds, now intending for the Coast of Coromandel; item, of John Douglas on 22 August previously from Salangoor, having departed again on the 13th current for the Malay Coast, and both these captains were already mentioned in our last advices; as well as on 28 August from Oedjong Salang, William Ormstrom commanding the ship named Mary, of 350 tons burthen, mounted with 10 pieces of cannon and manned with 40 hands, intending at a suitable time to head for Madras. The Dispenser Frans Ulrich van Moesbergen having demonstrated on 9 August of last year how that of the wheat brought in the year 1755 from Batavia and Surat, amounting to a quantity of fully 29 1/2 lasts, there still remained in the warehouses 26 lasts, which, already being a year old, were being increasingly eaten away by vermin, we therefore, at the session of 9 September following, considering that the Company, by keeping it longer, would have to expect a great loss due to its spoiling, and that the quantity was not proportioned to the daily consumption, resolved to have the same sold by the rentmeester in town by public auction, and to let the Cape wheat run down at most to the purchase price; and this having been put into effect on 10 September last, no more could then be disposed of than 7000 lb of Cape wheat, on which, as appears from the accompanying return, only 2 1/4 percent was gained; but subsequently, the scarcity of rice at the bazaar becoming very great according to our previous advice, the same was, for the relief of the suffering community, almost all distributed and sold publicly among them according to each person's needs, the Cape wheat with an advance of 44 1/2 percent and the Surat wheat with 16 percent; at the session of 27 April current, the aforementioned Dispenser was ordered to pay compensation for the loss occurring on the wheat sent back to the Coast on the ship Woitkensdorp in the past year, amounting to f 396:7:8, and that as the former custodian of that grain; but he has since obtained and presented to us alongside the accompanying copy of the request the two enclosed original sworn attestations, whereby the commissioners who discharged the ship Woitkensdorp in the year 1753 and the mandador testify that that grain was brought ashore spoiled at that time, for which reason he has requested of us in a

And since, especially in the last-passed month of March, the aforementioned shortage of rice began to increase so excessively hand over hand that it appeared of the utmost necessity to devise means that could to some extent remedy the same, all the more because, according to experience at that time, very little of that highly necessary foodstuff was imported from outside, we therefore, at the session of the 1st of April, resolved to send the bark de Kaaskoper and the hacker de Donquichot with the bookkeeper Gustaaf Dirksz and 30 coyangs of salt to Assahan, whither, departing on the 9th of April with an Instruction among the letters already sent to the outer districts, and having returned on the 20th of July, he brought back for it, as appears from the annex report submitted on the 10th of last month, approximately 27 coyangs; waiting for which would have caused great grief, had it not favorably pleased heaven to grant us in the meantime, beyond expectation and even very accidentally on the 24th of April from Mergui, a certain vessel of Surat origin, being a two-masted brigantine, laden with 42 coyangs of rice destined for Cochin, but which, forced by contrary winds and currents, had to seek this roadstead. While from Java and other places and from this strait a reasonable quantity was also brought to us now and then, so that the price, to the great joy of the poor inhabitants at the bazaar, has fallen again from 100 rixdollars per coyang of the common variety down to 60 rixdollars. The provisional assistants Gerrit Leendert Velge and Jan Hendrik van Robbig, both born here, very humbly request by their enclosed handwritten petitions to be favored with the assistant board money, while the assistant Hendrik Albertsz, a quiet and polite young man who has performed his service here at the secretariat to satisfaction, upon his earnest request and expiration of time, was licensed to depart presently for the capital. Thus, on the 19th ultimo, the pay ledger clerk Paulus Rapa was, at his own desire, on account of his debility and poor hearing, discharged from that service to find employment again as before at one of the writing offices, and, subject to the hoped-for approval of Your Right Excellencies, on the 29th following, the assistant Jeronimus Zeydeler was appointed thereto in his place. Furthermore, at the sessions of 27 April and 20 August current, after having undergone examination in navigation, the following were promoted to second mates: the steward Govert van Welle, quartermaster Jan Andries de Vries, and sailor Jacob Hartman, the first two by halving with the wages of ƒ26 and 24 for three years each, and the latter, as appointed to the ship Meervliet, with such a salary as it shall please Your Right Excellencies favorably to grant him; just as on the last-mentioned day the sailor Michiel Bartels, also appointed there, was promoted to boatswain's mate. Further, from the militia, on 10 September last, Corporal Abraham Batenburg and soldier Johannes Berbas, as well as on the 29th following the captain of arms Rudolph Fredrik Eendracht, were promoted to sergeants with the usual wages and a new contract of 5 years, for the first two taking effect on 18 July 1755 when they arrived here as such, and since then also effectively throughout all the troubles performed their service with great distinction and alertness, but the latter from the day of his promotion; as well as on 20 August, upon request, placed into burgher freedom. 131 From Malacca the 18th October 1757 From Malacca the 18th October 1757 [illegible] by letter of the 16th September has informed us to have heard nothing of Weltevreeden, but that Andria Andriesz was still at Gueda, where he had offered for sale his vessel, which was lying on the mud due to leakages, and both here and previously at Salangoor and in the bay of Dingding had maliciously debased among the natives that Radja Alem and Scassil had arrived here from Batavia in order to be appointed by the Honorable Company and with the help of all its naval force present here, the first as King of Pera, and the latter as Regent of Salangoor. The ship Meervliet having been dispatched hither in the past year with Your High Excellencies' favorable qualification to dispose of it in such manner as should be judged most beneficial, serviceable, and necessary for the Honorable Company according to circumstances of time, the same, after returning to the roadstead from the completed expedition of Klewang, was detained because it was impossible to know or foresee in the troubled conditions of that time whether it would not be needed elsewhere, while in the meantime, making a necessary demonstration there to deter the enemies, it also served to cover the defenseless trade vessels of our inhabitants, at a time when those of the Honorable Company found sufficient employment going to and coming from Linggi, Siak, and elsewhere. And as long as one remained in uncertainty regarding and with the enemies, it seemed ill-advised and for that reason, according to the aforesaid qualification, even irresponsible to send that vessel away, and therefore one was well mindful of the very esteemed recommendation of Your High Excellencies to be found in the letter of the 8th of October 1756 regarding the procuring of a good supply of mast timbers. 1741 141 From Malacca, the 18th of October 1757 From Malacca, the 18th of October 1757 Heavy leak. So that, in order not to expose it to a very painful voyage exhausting for the people sailing upon it by dispatching it in the contrary monsoon, being known as a very clumsy sailer, one intended to dispatch it with a good cargo of those spars, tin, etc. at the beginning of the northern monsoon; for which then, all necessary preparations having been made gradually, it was laden with 282452 lb tin, 31300 lb benzoin in 60 cases, 1743 lb elephants' tusks, and 83 mast timbers and spars, of which 39 pieces had only been brought from the opposite shore on the 24th of June, with all of which it would already have departed in the past month, had it not been that in the meantime, and indeed at night when laden, between the 18th and 19th of August during a heavy squall from the south-southwest, a leak was discovered low down near the keel, which has since increased daily, as appears from the annexed written report of the skipper Dries, equipage overseer Bellemont, chief mate Holst, commander of the Spreeuw, and the master of the ship carpenters Van Leeuwen, presumed to be principally under the step of the foremast, irreparable here unless completely unloaded and careened with the keel above water; but since besides the great labor attached to this, a great deal of time would be wasted thereby, it was resolved on the proposal of these nautical and ship experts at the session of the first of the current month to let it proceed on its voyage, reinforced with 35 to 40 hands, provided with another pump, under the escort of the bearer of this, the bark De Spreeuw, as they maintained that thus provided, under God's blessing, it could well undertake the same without danger. But on the [illegible] of this month, with a west by south and west-southwest wind mixed with storm squalls and a high, angry sea, the leak according to the report of skipper Kleynhout increased so much that, in spite of the constant working of four pumps, the water rose to 50 inches, and after all the available crew, both from the Huygewaard and present sloops, were pressed and had worked with the aforesaid four pumps throughout the entire day without intermission, it was found to have decreased again in the afternoon to 32 and 30 inches, but toward evening, notwithstanding a continuous playing of the pumps, it increased again to 40 inches. On the 5th of the same month, the aforesaid commissioners, together with the chief mate Meyer, commander of the Kaaskoper, went on board again.

143 From Malacca, 10 October 1757 From Malacca, 18 October 1757 was by nautical experts the deed of the Batavian done in the year 1755/6 extraordinarily wasted in that Senior Merchant Omhuys present Company vessels on board to have the master carpenter, if possible, chop some holes into the ceiling planking, in order to perceive through them where the leak actually was; yet fruitless, as after the chopping of various holes, as well as a piece out of the step of the foresail mast, they had been able to discover nothing other than a heavy pressure and swelling of water, so strong indeed that against all continual pumping, it kept rising, thus they at that time, as appears from the accompanying report which judged the ship entirely unable to undertake the destined voyage, declared it unserviceable, discharged, and unloaded, which also caused us, at the session of the 6th of this month, to resolve to detain this vessel and unload it rather than expose it, with such a considerable cargo of purchase value ƒ3564:6:8, to such an apparent danger as would occur by its dispatch: meanwhile, and having heard that in order to incur no inconvenience in the roadstead it has been put on the mud bank, and 79445 lb of tin costing, with all expenses as appears from the accompanying invoice, a sum of ƒ26460:2, has been transshipped from it into the bearer of this, while its remaining cargo is to be transported as soon as possible into the Huygewaard, so we very respectfully request that you take a favorable pleasure in this proceeding and honor us with Your Right Excellencies' respected approval regarding this keel, for whose repair, in case it should at any time be found feasible here, we lack the necessary timber just as well as that required for the improvement of the other present vessels, whose actual condition is described in the accompanying report of express commissioners who have inspected the same carefully, over which we therefore very respectfully request by this, while we further take the liberty by the enclosed memorandum to display the highly necessary repairs to the same, supply of equipment goods, ammunition of war, item the carpentry done as well as otherwise on the Company vessels present here during the financial year 1755/6, in which, according to the extract from the specification book, an extraordinary sum of ƒ528:11: has been wasted, for the write-off of which we most respectfully request authorization, not without respectful expressions of thanks for the high favors shown to us in that case the previous year: as the undersigned Governor and Second do separately in the accompanying petitions for such monthly house rent as it shall mildly please Your Right Excellencies to grant them, as through the unfitness of the Company dwellings they have been obliged to move into private houses. While with regard to that residency we can communicate with much satisfaction that this year, in all likelihood, it will meet our expectations, since we have not only enabled it by sending the necessary supplies, but also the inclination of the indigenous population in bringing in their products ensures that pleasant profits can be demonstrated there, as will be shown below. However, we have had to reproach the resident concerning the acceptance of a batch of camphor and ordinary benzoin, which upon inspection was found to be of such poor and meager quality that a compensation of 2520 guilders was charged for the lesser quality against the resident, which we, pursuant to Your Noble High Mightinesses' orders, have charged to the resident to be paid in cash into the treasury, as appears from our resolution of the 30th of March of this year. While in relation to this point, we humbly request that the compensation for the lesser quality of those gums should always fall upon the collectors and not also upon the appraisers, as Your Noble High Mightinesses were pleased to order recently by letters of the 27th of August 1756, because everyone, mostly out of fear of suffering damage, excuses themselves from the appraisal or inspection, provided, however, that they must always be prepared to verify that the appraisal was performed according to their best understanding and with impartiality. Likewise, we have had to show our displeasure about the reckless conduct there regarding the estate of the deceased sergeant Johan Godfried Ziegber, because after the sale of his remaining small effects, the proceeds were distributed by the resident among the creditors without properly transferring the estate to the Curator ad lites; wherefore we have caused the amount thereof, to the sum of 174 rixdollars and 1 stiver, to be refunded and placed onto the death account of the deceased, as shown by our resolution of the 28th of December of the past year. There being no further matters from there to deal with, we shall further report to Your Noble High Mightinesses regarding Ayer Bangis that affairs there have not yet been brought to full bloom.
