15 West Coast, 24 April 175 Sumatra From Sumatra's West Coast, 24 April 175 for the Resident proceeds very slowly due to the continuous illness of the craftsmen there, and for that reason we have resolved, in order to bring this to an end, to recall both the woodwork and the carpenters and to prepare everything here in such a manner that, by driving in the wooden pegs, it can be erected in a day or two, and thus much more expeditiously and economically than by continuing in the hope of improvement and having to disburse needless wages and subsistence money to those people. Meanwhile, for the revival of trade in general, both there and here, we believe that the country's utmost necessity requires that the products of camphor and benzoin, also falling due there, should by no means be rejected with contempt, but on the contrary must be accepted in barter for one thing or another. For what improvement can one then hope for, in order to divert the native from the English or to have them fulfill their contracts, if one does not provide them, in exchange for what their land produces, with that which must serve them for food and shelter, such as salt and iron, the latter for the plow in the rice fields. Touching this important point, alongside amicable intercourse with these peoples, we take the liberty, subject to the submissive correction of wiser judgment, to state that the well-being of our Lords and Masters depends upon it, wherefore we also made no difficulty in our meeting of 24 January last in qualifying the Administrators for the acceptance and dispatch of a parcel of gums recently brought here from the northern quarters by From Sumatra's West Coast, 4 April 173 From Sumatra's West Coast, 24 April 1737 by peoples who for years have not been here to trade. However, we beseech Your Right Honors to provide us again soon with an ample supply of merchandise according to our requisition now departing, because the little that is still held in the warehouses today will soon be turned over, just as we have caused to be done publicly by auction with a parcel of household sorts which remained lying interest-free in the magazines and yet still rendered their percentages, in such manner as has been detailed in our resolution of 24 January last, and in that of 11 February following, the price current of the cargo of linens brought by the Sparenrijk, which on average yielded well over 52 percent. But it is astonishing that the Parcallen and red moris, which formerly, or rather in the year 1754 with the ship De Jager, were brought here and yielded a capital profit, can now achieve no more, although set at the same price, than well over 23 percent; and likewise the brown and blue moris received last year by the Naarstigheid, which then rendered 40 1/4 percent and now only 8 1/3 percent. Yet one disposes of the unpopular goods as much as possible alongside the popular, and thus makes up for it, as appears from the Guinea common blue, which on the other hand rose again to 77 7/8, and moreover, with that assortment, the other goods find buyers. For the incompetence of the Resident of Adjerhadja causes him immediately to send back as unvendible whatever does not sell quickly, without trying with gentleness and friendliness whether the one cannot be sold mixed with the other, as is executed here without the slightest trouble. However, not wishing to weary Your Right Honors any longer with his doings, we shall only add here that his residency of Adjerhadja does not fulfill the calculation made by him some years ago regarding the cultivation of pepper. For according to his contention and promise in letters of 26 September 1754, an extract of which is appended hereto among the enclosures under No. 7, the lands of Indrapoura and Adjerhadja should already have delivered in the year 1756 a quantity of 60000 lb, whereas on the contrary, in the last two years they have yielded no more than well over 20000 lb. Nevertheless, as the increase, both here and there, proceeds gradually, it will turn out as we had the honor to communicate to Your Right Honors in our letters of 23 April 1755.

West Coast, 24 April 1757 From Sumatra From Sumatra's West Coast, 24 April 1757 that this matter was handled by us with great zeal, and to communicate the president, or Prince, to Their High Nobilities, and that in continuation it is found to differ little from our thoughts put on paper several times, for anyone who is familiar with the almighty lazy nature and customs of the local native people here and has any knowledge of this Coast will have to agree that the aforesaid calculation of the Ayer Haji resident is just as much of an imaginary nature as a shipload of that desired grain is to be expected from here in the first two or three years. While in continuation of this, we have the honor to answer the extract most recently received by us: Extract In the handling of the affairs belonging to this office, we have taken into further consideration the advice and reports which Your Honor has given us from time to time regarding the state of affairs at Natal and the harmful consequences which may result for the Company from the unrest arisen there. And having further examined Your Honor's secret resolution of 15 August 1754, together with your secret missive to the incoming chief Van Herzeele of the 22nd of the aforesaid month, we have found that the orders given by Your Honor were so well adapted to the circumstances of time and affairs that we fully conform thereto, commending the said chief Van Herzeele to execute the orders given to him with zeal and circumspection according to his ability, the success of which we shall await with longing. We have subsequently also considered the conditions upon which Your Honor thought fit, at the request of the ministers, to grant the patent for the establishment of a trading society here for the term of three years, and which we, by our missive of 8 October 1753, permitted Your Honor to prolong for one more year; on which occasion we endeavored to ascertain what greater advantage the Company would actually enjoy from the establishment of that Society, but of which we have nowhere been able to discover any real evidence. However doubtful it now appears to us whether the Company will indeed find its account in this new establishment, and whether on the contrary it will not serve to prejudice its inherent private trade with greater authority than private individuals can do, we are nevertheless willing to suspend our judgment until we shall be further informed by Your Honor as to what success that Society will have had, and particularly what use or advantage the Company derives from it; to which Your Honor must add an exact list of all those who have any share or interest in that Society. In the meantime, we leave it to Your Honor's disposal to prolong the said patent for the term of one, two, or at most three years, nevertheless under the serious recommendation that Your Honor shall keep a watchful eye on the progress of that Society, and finding that the Company is not thereby noticeably more advantaged than it was through the free trade as we permitted it, Your Honor shall then dissolve the said Society. From Sumatra's West Coast, 24 April 1757 that with respect to Natal, all assistance both of ammunition and cash as well as good counsel was provided, as appears in general from our successive ordinary and secret advices, and as further worked upon in continuation, in particular through two separate letters sent by the first undersigned on 10 December and 24 February, but without positive orders to drive the British by force from their usurped places, and because nothing can be accomplished if the native is not assisted with European military force, vessels, and ammunition, since these base West Coast peoples cannot stand against white men, as experience has shown time and again; besides that it is very difficult to undertake anything against that quarrelsome nation, but awaiting the orders in this regard with much longing, we hope to bring it to a good end. From Sumatra's West Coast, 24 April 1757 From Sumatra's West Coast, 24 April 1757 unable to meet the demand in that regard, and your Honors having ordered an opulent supply here at the coast, we shall cause the same to cease, and reopen the free trade on the former footing. Regarding the sappanwood and wild cinnamon: Since, according to your advices, the sappanwood found here on the coast is of better quality and lower price than the Bima or Siamese variety, it is pleasing to us that your High Noblenesses have ordered an unlimited quantity of it, expecting that, according to the measure of its supply, the annually required quantity of the other sorts will be reduced, so that in accordance with our recommendation the importation of those dyestuffs to the Netherlands will not be increased excessively. If the market price should become excessively high beyond the limited price, we dare so little flatter ourselves regarding the gathering of that wood in small quantities. That your Honors, through the shipment of 10000 lb of wild cinnamon to Surat, have wished to make a trial of what success its trade might have there, affords us satisfaction as a token of your attention to the advancement of the Company's trade. In this, however, one must proceed with caution so that through the sale of the wild cinnamon no prejudice be brought to the venting of the better sort. The assurance which the ministers in their missive have again given, that the pepper cultivation will finally meet with the desired success, and that your Honors will before long see the ships return laden with pepper instead of ballast stones, as they have repeatedly shown that this was not as far off as previously maintained, but that it has nevertheless made a beginning which, through good oversight, increases reasonably upon continuation—of which the small parcels of it sent over were the first proofs—and by continual exhortations to the inhabitants of this country, we are not without hope to see this important matter in time in full bloom. We hope that this will finally be fulfilled in fact, as it becomes tedious to see their letters constantly filled with fine promises and broad statements that are seldom brought to any reality. We appreciate nonetheless their continuous attention, both to the advancement of that crop and to the improvement of the gold trade, having seen with satisfaction from the quantity of planted pepper trees and the ample gathering of the aforementioned mineral that their efforts applied thereto have not been entirely fruitless. For the rest, we recommend them to pursue with redoubled zeal the improvement of the state of this office by reducing expenses and increasing profits, and to make it answer to the hope given to us thereof. In compliance with your High Noblenesses' order regarding the complaints from the residency of Bengkulu, we had the fiscal investigate the bad conduct of one of our commanders at the roadstead of Mukomuko, and we now have the honor to inform your High Noblenesses in that regard that the second mate and commander of the bearer of this letter, the pantchiallang De Overmaas, Albert Bosch, having touched at the said roadstead due to a scarcity of water, was forced to leave it again by a suddenly arising squall from the south without being able to make payment for what he had been accommodated with by the Resident, Mr. Robert Tack, upon request, as appears from the report made thereof by his Honor in our meeting of 30 March of this year, a copy of which is enclosed herewith among the annexes. Referring thereto for brevity's sake, we note in continuation of this that we have debited the said Bosch at the session of the first of December of the past year for the buyout price of 1 last and 31 measures of salt, and 135 lb of long flat iron, which he delivered short on his cargo brought from Batavia, amounting to a small sum of 216 guilders and 10 stivers. On the other hand, we have, subject to your High Noblenesses' approval, by resolution of 24 January last, granted the military Captain Visboom, in view of the present repair of his dwelling house inside this fortress, eight rixdollars house rent, which we shall also cause to cease again after the work is done. West Coast of Sumatra, the 24th of April 1757 Findings of the trade books from the [illegible], Anno 1753/54, we have the honor to reply that we cannot fail to request Your High Excellencies herewith that the emolument of 16 rixdollars for the entertaining and receiving of the native chiefs, which was permitted as ordinary expenses in the Household Memorandum, but according to the opinion of the visitor-general would have to be reimbursed, may not only remain as such, but even, at the discretion of Your High Excellencies, be increased again to 24 rixdollars, as in former times, because the aforesaid 16 rixdollars are not sufficient, as the native is constantly on one's neck and carries off a tidy sum with their covert begging, in addition to which the ambassadors from the Minangkabau court are also maintained by the Commander and are necessary here to keep peace and quiet with the highlanders and everyone in a good humor, so that trade may not be hindered by any obstacles; which we hope may merit a favorable reflection from Your High Excellencies, as well as the petition of the second administrator Landsius for the remission of such 2287 guilders and 2 stivers as was imposed on him and the widow of the merchant and first administrator Willem van Rhijn regarding the gold sent from here in the past year, in which, it is believed, the Company suffered no loss, all according to his petition to Your High Excellencies accompanying this among the enclosures. Bugis soldiers Simon Cornelis de Jong (alias Abdul Carram Antjol) and Isaak Aron (alias Abdul Rahim), for desertion and the corrupting or rather abducting of slaves, with the cord; as well as the male slaves taken and seduced by them, Cupido Sineijcha and Poulo Chinco of Nias, the first with a flogging, branding, and twenty-five years in chains, and the latter two each to a flogging and five years in chains, of whom the first-mentioned Cupido has already been sent per Sparenrijk, and the two others are employed here on the public works; and finally the sailor now crossing over, Hermanus Louis, also for desertion from Adjerhadja with six of his fellow comrades, with a flogging and five years in chains, all according to the judicial papers now being transmitted, to which we respectfully refer for the sake of brevity. However, that would not compare to what it would have been if those goods, most humbly requested in a further requisition, had been received with this ship Sparenrijk; that would not only in profits and capital, but in engaging and accommodating the merchants, have produced considerable progress, which through an irresponsible hand, envy, false, and untrue reports, currently is set back in the Honorable Company's precious interests. In addition, from an Extract of Your High Nobilities' highly revered missive, I have seen to my sorrow and with astonishment that it is a slight matter for the Council of Padang to report untruths to Your High Nobilities; for two consecutive years they have dared to attempt considerably more, but nothing is spun so fine that it does not finally come to the sun. My patience must endure. From the aforementioned Extract it appears to me as if the named Council must have submitted to Their High Nobilities that Ayer Hadja was subordinate to the Sepoelohbandar, yet the accompanying Extract from the description of Sumatra's West Coast, lying in their own Secretariat, can show the contrary and put them to shame; for Ayer Hadja has belonged to Indrapura from ancient times, but having severed itself therefrom arbitrarily in the year 1682, by the Lord Commander Joan van Leen, with the consent and agreement of the Sepoelohs, it was chosen and acknowledged as a kingdom or Raja of Ayer Hadja by itself. In the year 1696, under the authority of the Lord Cornelis Beernink, Ayer Hadja was garrisoned with men in the meantime, the better to separate the Sepoelohbandars from Indrapura in such a manner, to keep a watchful eye on both, and also to observe the English. From Sumatra's West Coast, the 1st of March 1757 From Sumatra's West Coast, the 15th of March 1757 to write down and say that that is so, but the native government has been well pleased with how the head of the lodge has moved, but they are currently very much against it and also wish to be placed under Padang, saying that was their ancient custom, whereas the king hereabouts has always been a very faithful servant of the Honorable Company and exerts himself with all his might to remain in the favor of the Honorable Company. To encourage the cultivation of pepper he even, contrary to the nature of the Malays, works along in the pepper gardens, and he also had to encourage others all the way to Padang. Therefore, in order to distinguish him, it was most humbly requested of Your Right Honourables, so as also to make the others outside my district ashamed and instill ambition in them so that they might follow his example. In a few years he will come riding with coach and horses, whereas the other bloodsuckers and opium pushers all the way to Padang will not even be able to afford a water buffalo cart. Resulting from my disposition and persuasion this year, instead of constructing fine carriage roads as on Padang, to get 30 to 40,000 pepper trees planted here and at Indrapoura, notwithstanding that the Lord Commander seeks to extirpate this on every occasion, which causes some more trouble and sometimes grief, but will not deter me. That they want to have Adjerhadja fall under the Sappoulobbtse is likewise a low-minded arrogance, in order thereby to subordinate me and the native regents of Poelo Chinco. Wherefore the chief there immediately wrote decent and discreet words to me, which he had not done previously. And finally, that regarding the pepper which I obtained to be planted with great difficulty, they might become suppliers of it to the Commanders, as appears from the enclosed Malay letter from the Lord Commander. He writes to the penghulus of Songotoeno, a small negorij one mile from here belonging to my district, that they had to bring their pepper to Padang, being 5 to 6 very arduous days' journey, which has brought my entire region into murmuring, so that they would rather ruin the pepper gardens than plant more. Having finally discovered the cause, I comforted those people, telling them to rest assured that such would not happen, having promised most humbly to submit it to Your Right Honourables for redress. Concerning the pantchiallang the Overmaas: it was here indeed 8 days earlier than the ship, but the resident Coenraad Meertens had gone to Poelo Chinco to close his books from the shore. Consequently, upon our arrival nothing but one last of salt had been unloaded yet, with the result that we could first unload the ship and only then the pantchiallang, using an unrepaired old cargo prahu in which Your Honors could store no more than 6 to 8 packs of linen. The pantchiallang had also, according to the statement of the second mate, become very disabled at sea on the voyage from Batavia due to bad weather, having no adequate equipment. He therefore requested assistance at Poelo Chinco, but instead of assistance he was answered that he should come to the roads there and they would help as far as possible, as if he could go overland with the pantchiallang or needed nothing so far out at sea. Being perplexed by this, he could not risk much either, but had to wait for good wind and weather until the 8th of October. Having undertaken his voyage, he was forced to return to the roads here on the 18th and once again on the 28th, as the said vessel had met with an accident and had not always remained off Poelo Ringe. Whose fault would it otherwise have been? And to burden me with this is unreasonable, just as it is an incompatible accusation that I am too independent and do not need to obey their orders. How would I want to dismiss myself from a Council of which I became a member through the favor of Your Right Honourables upon my most humble request? I had the honor to send to Your Right Honourables in most dutiful submission the original letter from which they wish to enforce this. Had they had but half a proof, they would have sent me to Batavia under arrest at once; that was their aim and desire. For that one is placed partly under Batavia and partly under Padang, every servant of the Honorable Company, even a soldier, can tell: if he is summoned by Your Right Honourables, they must let him go, consequently.

From Sumatra's West Coast, the 1st of March 1757 From Sumatra's West Coast, the 1st of March 1756 Roadstead and further consequence, partly: Just as plausible is their report regarding this roadstead or fairway, which has been navigated cleanly for as long as the Honorable Company has been on this coast, but is presently being represented as maliciously foul, merely out of a certain anxiety. To surrender my letters and papers and send them to them for despoilment cannot agree with the Honorable Company's interest and my own, whilst they place themselves against Your Right Honorable's highly respected orders, as well as upon every occasion and faction, until a favorable decision from Your Right Honorables. Not sending copies of letters would otherwise fall short in defense of the truth. Wherefore I most humbly beseech Your Right Honorables to observe and test this for merely two years, allowing the vessels to call here, and to most favorably send the goods according to my most humble requisitions, just as I am still expecting and requesting the remainder of my further requisition (with a capable Assistant). If those 33 bales newly received per the ship Sparenrijk are sold within two months, it must not be without desirable trade, especially since presently a desired occasion presents itself to wrest the trade out of the hands of the English, while they have not yet had a ship at Moco Moco and have little trade left. Finally, I take the liberty to request a house carpenter for one year in order to build the previously requested pepper and salt warehouses, as well as a new gate, and, should it please Your Right Honorables, to authorize me to place a warehouse on Pulau Ringgit, so that in foul weather the vessels can be unloaded and loaded from there, and in good and fair weather bring the goods vice versa ashore and the pepper to the island. Jacob Mossel From Sumatra's West Coast, the 15th of November 1757 Batavia To His Excellency The High Noble, Severe, Highly Esteemed Lord General of the Infantry in the service of the state of the United Netherlands, as well as on behalf of the same and the General Chartered Dutch East India Company, Governor-General, together with The Right Honorable Lords Councillors of the Netherlands Indies High Noble, Severe, Highly Esteemed Lord and Right Honorable Lords The ship bearer of this having been discharged of its return cargo of the Ouwerkerk, and its officers having been charged on account for the shortage delivered to the sum of ƒ58:14:—, we are letting that vessel return with all speed, all the more to grant Your Noble Excellencies the enjoyment of the fine quantity of gold and pepper mentioned at the foot of this, the ordinary description of this Coast being due to follow with the gold and pepper in the month of January next. Passed on per this vessel over his Reverence and qualified person, the Reverend Minister Boppius, for whose assignment we express our humblest thanks to Your Noble Excellencies, this congregation having been brought into a remarkably flourishing state through the zeal of his Reverence. While Captain-Lieutenant Visboom and Fiscal de Valbert also cross over, which latter has here furnished sufficient security to satisfaction for such sum of rd:s 1367 7/8 as the same must reimburse here pursuant to Your Noble Excellencies' highly honored orders received by letters of the 2nd of August for his enjoyed share in a certain confiscated English ghunting, on the grounds that we, subject to Your Noble Excellencies' favorable approval, have taken the liberty upon his departure to the capital, upon request by our resolution of the 31st of August last past, provisionally to excuse the same from cash payment here, in order to beseech Your Noble Excellencies that he may be favorably liberated from that reimbursement out of singular grace. The 96 corgies of coarse linen mentioned in our respectful letter of the 28th of April last and Your Right Honourables' aforementioned rescript of the 20th of October, 1756, the purchase of which Your Right Honourables were pleased to approve in your honoured letter of the ultimate last, consisting of: 2 packs of Ponnobogesjes of 2460 threads, long 27, wide 1 1/3 @ 6:- 12 ditto dorogesjes of 1920 ditto, 2/5 ditto, 1 1/15 @ [illegible] Recently sent by the ship Ruijteveld via Ceilon to the Fatherland [illegible] to accept them at proportionally lower prices than the contracted ones, to excuse them from the fulfillment of the Fatherland demands, and to keep them for India, as well as, just like the cloths negotiated for the main office, to have them stamped, of which a beginning has been made with 2 packs of fine Niguaniasses from Brootchia for the Netherlands, received on the demand for Anno 1756, of which more will be spoken below under the main section of the collection of returns at this office. Concerning the elephant tusks and the tortoiseshell received here from Cochin China and Batavia in the year 1753/4, we take the liberty to refer to our Resolution of the 23rd of February last, wherein is inserted a further report regarding the same that clearly indicates the weight of the pieces. Pursuant to what was noted in our respectful letter of the ultimate of December of the previous year, all the former stock of fine Ceylon cinnamon, beyond what is needed for two years for gifts and consumption, has already been sent with the ship Barbara Theodora, and thereof, without charging for the cost, 625¾ lb entirely tasteless, which was found here among a parcel of 1569¾ lb from Ketsmandui, and mentioned under the main section of sales in our respectful letter of the 28th of the previous year. In answer to Your Right Honourables' question why benzoin is demanded anew if there is no profit on it, we have the honour to report that good quality benzoin here, whenever the supply is not too large, can always be sold with passable profits, but that the parcel of so-called ordinary white and black which in the past year had to be disposed of at cost price, as appears from our letters of the 24th of December, 1755, and the 2nd of March, 1756, was very bad in its varieties. For Your Right Honourables' favourable reflection on what we took the liberty to present to the same regarding the costs supported by the Ahmedabad provisional factor De Bellon during the escort of the cafila thither in Anno 1755, and the license which Your Right Honourables were pleased to grant for the writing off of 293 canassers of powder and candy sugar, shipped from the ship Giesenburg in a hired hovrij that was captured by the Sultanpoor Coolies, and of the ƒ3300:- in net ransom for the two hired hovrijs, the Hartloper and the Hoop, taken by the same and the Sangian pirates in the spring of 1755 on the voyage to Kets Mandui, we express our gratitude. But since, as appears from the letter of the servants at Mandui of the 20th of April last, the last-mentioned vessel could not be obtained in the state in which it was taken for the stipulated sum of ƒ2250:-, but the bare hull alone with a mast and rudder for ƒ2100:-, and the servants therefore, as appears from the specification inserted in the resolution of the 17th of May last, had to spend another ƒ1109:8:8 on it in order to have it brought over sea so that it might be returned here to the owner, we humbly request to be permitted to deal with the excess amount of ƒ957:9:8 in the same manner, as upon reviewing the aforementioned specification we could not see that any avoidable expenses were incurred. In our formal description of the 28th of April, 1756, [illegible] regarding spices in Anno 1752/5, one might wish to insinuate as if it resulted from a defective fulfillment of our petitions that we had no more on hand than the sold quantity, for although our demand of cloves was not completely fulfilled, we must nevertheless acknowledge that the quantity of 80105 lb allocated to us is so large that we had as little reason as intention to give notice of anything of the kind; that the full quantities requested of the other spices were sent completely, and that one also had enough of them, indeed even having left over a remainder of mace and cinnamon; so that our statement of having had no more spices in stock than were sold is only applicable to the cloves and nutmegs, of which latter spices the brokers still had a remainder from the previous financial year which they also disposed of in Anno 1752/5 and upon which we calculated when drawing up our demand for Anno 1754, just as the lesser sale compared to Anno 1754 principally relates to the cinnamon.

From Souratta, the 14th of May, A:o 1757. monies of the [illegible] travel expenses whereof, because of the increase of its price, in the entire financial year only 786 lb, or 4123¼ less than in the previous one, was sold; therefore we respectfully request pardon for our erroneous or overly general statement regarding this matter. It was very pleasing to us that our arrangements with regard to the expenses of the subordinate offices and travel expenses have met with Your Right Honourable's honored approval, and since then it has been deemed appropriate, subject to Your Right Honourable's honored approval, to place Dahajapour on an equal footing with Amedabaad with respect to expenses, and with Brootchie around travel expenses, for reasons discussed at large in our resolutions of the 11th of August and the 23rd of February last past. The undersigned Director, having informed himself through various persons as to how matters actually stand with the trade to Sindij, concerning which Your Right Honourable was pleased to require his considerations—which merchandises are in demand there, how much one can approximately reckon on being able to sell there, and which products the country yields, or are brought there for sale from other regions—has in that regard gathered the following: 1. That if one sells anything there on credit, one has an incredible amount of trouble collecting the outstanding monies. 2. That it is therefore ill-advised to carry on any trade there, except by way of truck or exchange of one good for another. 3. That although formerly 20,000 lb of lead or more and indeed 12 to 15,000 pounds of iron could be sold there per year, it is nevertheless ill-advised to bring any of those two minerals, because the subahdar is accustomed to appropriate the same without paying more for it than comes into his head. 4. That one cannot reckon on selling more than 500 canassers of Javanese powder sugar per year, although in some years a thousand or more are consumed, as this depends much on an ample or scarce supply of Bengal sugar, which at its highest is estimated at two to three thousand bags. 5. That besides the aforementioned quantity of powder sugar, there could also be traded there in a profitable manner: 10 to 15,000 lb of tin 10 to 12,000 lb of elephant tusks 2 to 3,000 lb of cloves 1000 lb of cinnamon, genuine Ceylon, provided it may be sold for 80 stuivers the lb or below that, but otherwise not 500 lb of mace 8 to 10,000 lb of sappanwood 2 to 3,000 lb of white benzoin 1000 lb of red lead 4 to 500 lb of cochineal 500 lb of cubeb pepper 50 to 100 lb of European or Jeddah saffron 25 to 30 pieces of fine scarlet broadcloth and no other colors 100 to 200 bales of cotton, when the market for that spun yarn is cheap here and dear in the realm of Kutch, which is separated from it only by the Indus; so that this wool cannot be considered a fixed article of trade. 6. That Bengal silk will now also be a very sought-after article, since the English usually sent two small ships annually directly thither from the Ganges, which were partly laden with silk on freight for the account of the Khatri merchants. 7. That with those small ships there was commonly also brought a parcel of: Waxed cloth Long pepper 1000 lb of ginger whereof the quantity that could probably be sold annually could no more be stated than that of the silk. 8. That the principal return article is the putchuck, which is not produced in the country of Sind, but is brought there from Lahore and Multan. 9. That in addition there is produced and to be obtained there saltpetre of a far lesser quality than the scarce Indigo, which was formerly brought from there to Souratta annually in a quantity of 2 to 300 maunds, but often cost just as much as one can obtain the Agra variety here, which does not have to yield to it in quality, whereby for seven or eight years now the import has ceased entirely, being mostly bought up by the English and transported to Bassora. Shawls or blankets, very fine but expensive in proportion. Asafoetida, which is brought there from Persia, but is currently at a very low market hereabouts.

From Souratta the 14th May Anno 1757 Sintjoura a type of salt, that finds its vent in Souratta, but is of too little monetary value to constitute an article of trade for the Company, as also now and then some Grains and Butter, of which the prices in some Years differ so little to the good with Souratta, that after deduction of the costs there is virtually no profit on it. 10. That it swarms so much with Pirates between this place and the Indus, that no native vessels dare to pass the fairway without taking passes from the principal ones, with which they still can pass only with great difficulty, because of which now for several consecutive Years not ten have come hither from Sind and departed thither, instead of the 100 that one formerly saw sailing back and forth, so that one seems to have as little need to fear that the market there will be spoiled by the natives, as the same is to be expected from the side of the English. 11. That there are some assortments of Linens made there which, though not useful for the Trade in Souratta, might nevertheless be of service for other places of India, and of which one could therefore have some corgies traded as samples for trial, to be sent to Your Right Honourables under notification of the cost at the first opportunity. For all which reasons the first undersigned, under correction of wiser judgment, believes that even if the ship het Pasgeld, which as he is informed has arrived from Masquetta at Tetta the capital of Sind to trade, should find no favorable market there, one ought not, in case the troubles that have arisen in the upper lands of Hindostan do not extend to this province but everything remains quiet there, to let oneself be rebuffed thereby from once making a further trial of the traffic around that region with the hooker d' Jonge Jacob and one or two small vessels, or at least with the latter, laden with a suitable cargo, for which purpose one has two capable and linguistically skilled subjects at hand here, namely the junior merchants Johannes Sanderus and Hendrik Kroonenbergh, of whom one of the two together with a capable clerk could be employed as Commissioners, it being certain that such an expedition with two or at most three vessels, even if it did not answer expectations, will be of little detriment to the Company, and one will at least thereby find means for obtaining the necessary quantity of Radix Pootjoek for China and Japan, which aromatic root has not been brought hither from Sind in this and the preceding year, the English having managed to make themselves masters of everything the country has produced, such that there has been no getting at it even for the correspondents of the Company's brokers, except at prices which they were not assured of being able to obtain for it here in return, so that one not only had to purchase excessively expensive goods for China and Malacca in the past year, but has even to this day made fruitless efforts to obtain deliverable goods for even just a part of the Japanese requisition, for which there is accordingly little prospect. [illegible] for what reason we have allowed the officers of the ships Luxemburg, Marienbosch, Papienenburg, 't Huijs te Boede, and Middelburg here and at Dendarajapour, and of Bloemendaal in Mocha, to suffice with the oath of clearance on account of the shortfalls found in the cloves and nutmegs, we have the honor to remonstrate that this was done on the basis of the Regulation on write-offs and entries of the 25th of August 1752, wherein no limitation of two or more percent is to be found, but on the contrary it is stated in express terms that the true shortfall on the same must, if necessary, be confirmed by oath, validated, and nothing may be charged to the account of the officers except in the case of apparent lack of proper supervision; we being of the opinion that by the words "if necessary" it was to be understood when the shortfalls are excessive, and yet there is no apparent lack of proper supervision, and that the finding of an extraordinary short-weight cannot pass for an apparent lack of proper supervision if no other circumstances concur therewith, which we can in good conscience declare have not appeared to us, but rather reasons to establish the contrary; for if these excessive shortfalls, as we readily admit, were to be attributed to poor supervision, one could hardly explain why precisely on all the ships the short-weight on the nuts so remarkably surpasses that on the cloves, for had it occurred through theft and consequently also through apparent poor supervision, then surely, Right Honorable Sirs, on one consignment the short-weight of the one, and on the other that of the other spice [illegible], but that on the nuts was greater on all of them, just as it would also be very coincidental that, precisely in one and the same financial year, all the ship officers would have exercised poor supervision, which is nonetheless required to substantiate that assertion; for the short-weights are not only from a single ship but from all, and not only at this Main Office, but also in Mocha and at Dendarajapour have been extraordinary; for the rest, upon the submission of the findings of Middelburg and 't Huijs te Boede, the present Director indeed raised some objections against validating the same, but by a presentation of the foregoing, and that in this Directorate the short-weights on the spices have always been disposed of in that manner, and no disapproving remark thereon had ever been made by Your Right Excellencies, allowed himself to be dissuaded from persisting so far in his contrary opinion as to have a record kept thereof, so that he, now finding himself in the same case with us, also humbly requests with us that this our defense, as containing the simple truth, may be regarded with a favorable eye and considered: that not only in the years 1744/5 and 1748/9 large shortfalls also occurred on the spices, and the passing of the same, provided the oath of purge was taken, was not disapproved by Your Right Excellencies, certainly out of consideration that, when the cloves are somewhat stale, and the nuts, like all those brought in recent years, are very worm-eaten, it is impossible to make good the true shortfall with two percent or thereabouts; but also that the ministers at Nagapatnam, having reported in their advices of the 24th of August 1755 that they had passed for write-off 6 1/16 percent on the cloves delivered at Sadraspatnam with the ship Persijnenburg solely out of consideration that they had been in that keel for a long time, Your Right Excellencies, by their rescript of the 9th of June 1756, were pleased to declare that they found nothing to remark upon either in their adopted decisions on the discharged cargoes or in the entries and write-offs made, as it had appeared to Your Right Excellencies that everything was handled according to the orders and the regulation, just as we also, upon all that is dear to us, can testify to have done nothing in this matter other than that which we, for the reasons aforesaid, believed to accord with Your Right Excellencies' honored intention. Likewise on the 6th of this month to place under attachment all the retained and still to be earned salaries of the junior merchants Sanderus and Van der Sleijden, remaining in effect until Your Right Honourable's final decision in this regard shall have been received, and this for the first-named to the amount of ƒ2585:1:8:- and for the other up to ƒ697:6:4:-, being as much as their shares in the accountability amount to, according to two reports submitted by the Chief Administrator, objection of some members which are inserted into the resolutions of the aforementioned date; but as the members Kellij, Rujerti, and Van Ebbenhorst made known on the 19th and 30th of March that they considered themselves aggrieved thereby, because the division also regarding the delivered landings of Luxemburg, Lopierenburg, Marienbosch, and Bloemendaal, over which disposition had been made during the old means of subsistence or before the ultimate of February last, was done in eight equal parts, whereas nevertheless it had appeared repeatedly, and in particular from Your Right Honourable's missive to Bengal of the 13th of September 1756 it clearly appeared to entail your honoured intention that all indemnifications for matters that occurred during the same must be made pro rata of each person's share in the commissions on the purchase and sale, and consequently a junior merchant who in this Directorate has not yet enjoyed an eighth part of what has been allocated to a Director could in no way in the matter of accountability be placed on an equal footing with the same on the grounds of objections raised, with a request that in case, contrary to hope and wish, any indemnification should result from this matter, the distribution might be made pro rata as the former Director De Roth and the other council members had participated in the aforementioned means of subsistence, just as on the other hand they could well agree that the indemnifications since the cessation thereof ought to take place again on the previous footing, namely head for head in equal shares, we, although their contention in that regard was judged not at all unfounded, considering that it does not yet come down to any indemnification, but only to the provision of security, and there is consequently still time to request and await orders in that regard, judged it best hereby to request that in case of unexpected necessity, they may be supported with Your Right Honourable's honoured approval. Meanwhile we shall not fail to comply properly, and as we hope still on this occasion, with what was further required in this regard in Your Right Honourable's honoured last letter, when its enclosures, which we expect from Rajapour at any moment, shall have been received by us. concerning the sale of the powdered sugar, over their shares. in the city who directly attach the same, outside the Company's brokers, who are never of substance here. We have not offered this, as we well know that on the condition of immediate collection and payment we would not succeed with them, and therefore judge it better not to let them see that one is so very embarrassed with that sweetness; but we shall not fail, according to Your Right Honourable's salutary recommendation, to make every possible effort to restore our independence from those servants whenever the slightest opportunity presents itself, and are obliged in this regard, as honest men, to give this testimony of the truth that, to our knowledge, no merchant of substance who wished to purchase anything directly from the Company was ever turned away, but that most merchants, having been intimidated by the vexations of the regents, and on the other hand the Company's second broker Mantchergie Gorseeje having found the opportunity to make himself indispensable to the regents and, although holding no public office, to penetrate so far into the government of the city that he is generally regarded and feared as one of the actual regents, for some years past now no single merchant has dared to present himself to buy anything from the Company outside of their channel, their timidity going so far that not only do no natives dare to make any bid even at the Company's public auctions if they are not encouraged thereto by the Company's brokers, but one has even had to postpone the auctions once or twice because those servants forgot the warning given to them and consequently went to the Durbar instead of appearing there, so that no merchant appeared at or near the table after the bell had already been rung three times, with the result that we were forced together to return home without having accomplished our business. What was ordered with respect to the sending over of the demands and consignments could not yet be observed this year, because the ship the Barbara Theodora had already departed before the receipt of Your Right Honourable's honoured letter of the 30th of October 1756, but will henceforth be complied with without fail. Your Right Honourable's recommendation regarding the procurement of the cotton for Bengal we thought fit, among other things, to keep secret at the aforementioned session, as appears from our secret resolution of that date, because the new crop, which otherwise is already harvested in November or December, is only now coming in due to the unusually late rains, being still much more expensive than last year, but nevertheless falling due to a lack of buyers to transport that yarn to Bengal, and it therefore appeared very probable that and declaration subject 17.

From Surat, 14 May Anno 1757. accounts fallen. that the market, provided one did not arouse the monopolists through untimely eagerness in order to keep it at a high price, would become lower than the past year, although the harvest has turned out completely inopulent; wherefore, thinking that the heaviest matters must weigh the heaviest, although the time for the dispatch of the ships already began to run short, we resolved to remain indifferent regarding that article until there should be no prospect of a further decline, namely until well into the end of March, when we succeeded in that regard in such manner as will be treated in its proper place in the continuation of this letter. With the claim of the Moorish seafarers who have been imprisoned by the Angria, and of the widows of the fallen, matters have not run to such an extent as had been thought, so that one hopes to be able to stop with the payment of what remained due to them upon their departure from Batavia; but since no specification of provisions or hospital expenses has been received from the ship De Vreede, and consequently one remains in uncertainty whether any provisions were made to the Moorish seafarers stationed thereon before their departure, just as to those of Wimmenum, we decided at our session of the 22nd of the previous month, upon a report submitted by our pay bookkeeper, to withhold one month of their wages, or as much as those of Wimmenum received, until we shall be elucidated in that regard. Meanwhile, without an increase of wages, the necessary crew has been obtained for the carriers of this letter, though subject to Your Right Honourables' approval, instead of one crew of fifty, two crews of twenty-five each were engaged, on the remonstrance of the ship officers that they would then be of greater service at Batavia. The purchase of the Storax Liquida in Anno 1751 by the then Director, afterwards Extraordinary Councillor of India Johannes Pecock, having occurred without the presentation of samples in the meeting, it has now, in obedience to Your Right Honourables' command, been resolved to have the charged amount of f 1601:19:8 counted into the Company's treasury by the attorneys of Madam his widow. Regarding the paragraph in our respectful letter of 20 April of the aforesaid year, speaking among other things of the Mascarene coffee brought here with the French ship La Clotilde, the first undersigned guided himself in good faith by what he found noted thereof in the brief minutes kept at the secretariat for description, per memorie, and fully agreed with what had been related to him in that regard by his predecessors, only adding on his own part that it did not equal that of Mocha in quality, which no one who has tasted the one against the other will be able to deny; yet he found it ill-advised, upon such loose foundation, immediately to make a requisition for Javanese coffee, which occurred to him to have been sent hither once in earlier years, and to have lain unsaleable for a long time; and now, upon the receipt of Your Right Honourables' rescript, having inquired further into the quantity which the said ship brought, together with the sale price, and how the buyer fared with it, he has perceived that he did wrong to Your Right Honourables without it being reported to him now as a positive truth that the quantity only consisted of three to four thousand pounds, and was bought for five rupees per cento by an Armenian merchant, who, not being able to dispose of it here, was forced to seek an outlet with it by sending it to Bassora. The findings received alongside Your Right Honourables' esteemed letters concerning the trade books of this Directorate of Anno 1754, with Your Right Honourables' marginal dispositions and remarks in the margin hereunto properly answered, not only showing in detail which resolutions were taken at our aforementioned meeting of 23 February last, both regarding that matter and with relation to the premium of f 933:12:- granted to the Honourable Visitor-General for the errors etc. that would have been discovered by his Honour therein, but also which motives and considerations moved us thereto, we shall, to prevent useless repetition, take the liberty to refer thereto, only noting here furthermore that on that day, having also deliberated over some charges received by separate invoice with the ship Ruijteveld, we in the first place approved to debit the Junior Merchant Van Ebbenhorst, in view of his known insolvency regarding the cash payment of the compensation imposed on him as former first transferor of the lodge office at Batavia amounting to f 2887:16:-, for that amount on his pay account; on the other hand, to cause to be paid into the Company's treasury by whom it concerns the deficient soap found in 25 boxes brought from this Directorate in Anno 1755 per the ship Nieuw Nieuwerkerk; and furthermore to write off the charged sums on account of freight charges paid to various naval officers, amounting together to f 2802:18:-, to past-year profits and losses, and the f 4904:12:- in wages paid to the native militia returned from this Directorate to past-year burdens and expenses, but to recharge back to Batavia f 103:4:-, being the stamp and dispatch fees of the commission of Sea Captain Simon Flijn and companions, for reasons recovered.
