The accompanying special remarks regarding the returns received in the Netherlands from this Directorship in the year 1754, we shall endeavor to use as much as possible for our guidance in instructing the brokers and suppliers received in 1754. Being received for the first time, this mostly cannot take place except with respect to the demand contracted beforehand. Mention made. Simon Root, having already departed from here with the ship De Barbara Theodora. Concerning the minting and sale of bar silver, Your High Excellencies, if desired, will find this clarified and, as far as the lack of the necessary papers permits, corroborated by a report that he has the honor to present here with to Your High Excellencies. The answering of Your High Excellencies' aforesaid letters having ended herewith, except for what concerns the ship Rhoon, which will better be suited under the ship matter, we will now make room in this for the extracts from the letters of the High Excellencies of the 12th of April and 12th of October 1755, with our respectful answer to the same in the margin. Copy Extract General letter written by the Honorable High and Mighty Gentlemen Directors commissioned to the meeting of the 17 to Their Excellencies the Governor-General and Council of the Indies in Batavia on the date 12th of April Anno 1755, concerning the matters of Surat. Pursuant to our directive contained at the head of our demand of returns for the year 1756, sent to you with the ships of the 1st consignment of the previous year 1754 or the so-called kermis ships, we transmit to you herewith the remarks on the goods which were brought to our knowledge after the last autumn sale was held, specifically in relation to the articles specified in the margin. As far as the piece goods are concerned, how justified for several years running regarding this on the contrary a sufficient general carelessness in the packing and over all this has taken place, we shall transmit to you, distributed over two ships of the Praesidiale Chamber, goods from which not only the purchase price can be compared with the sale price, with a mark-up, but in which one will also be able to find clear proofs of what was just asserted from the samples of goods, packing slips, etc., appended thereto; our intention is that you shall have to dispatch to Bengal, Ceylon, Surat, and Coromandel a copy of the aforesaid set, (insofar as this concerns each of the said offices) at the first opportunity, nonetheless adding thereto an extract from this our letter, in which we have somewhat redressed and rectified the remarks contained in the set, to the end that the officials might turn both to their advantage. We therefore remark the following. Reports and findings of the goods of Surat with the returns of Anno. At the Chamber Amsterdam: Baftas bleached, poor; chintzes chiaboutras broad, long 12, 13, broad 1½ ells. This article yields no profit, because the work and the assortment are not sent as we order it in our demands. Ditto Surat ordinary broad, long 12, broad 1½ ells. This is a large article, our demands of this must be fulfilled. Niquanias long, long 19 to 20, broad 1 7/16 ells. These niquanias are not of the right sort as is desired here; these must be fine, such as the English Company brings, and which were sold for ƒ16:-. These samples and patterns are not yet among our English pieces to date, and we ordered you to send us goods of this quality, to which we have received neither an answer nor the goods. The domestic unrest generally tending to the prejudice of the Company's trade, it is a desirable thing that here on the Coast everything has remained at peace, and that consequently the ministers of this Directorate have had occasion to dispose of all the merchandise received by them with profit. The profits obtained therefrom in the book year 1754/1755, amounting to the sum of f 559660:8:-, are certainly pleasant, but they would be of considerably greater importance for the Company if they did not flow for a large part from the sale of spices; for as we have repeatedly stated on other occasions, preferred. have 23

From Souratta the 14th of May Anno 1757. yet apply our utmost efforts also to increase the vent of trade goods other than spices: perceive that we are so fortunate as to be able to give satisfaction to Your Right Honorable Worships. And we shall not fail, regarding the returns that in this matter have been handled too loosely by the subordinate offices, to urge them to their duty, as has already more than once been done by the present Director. This we shall, in so far as it relates to us, take as our dutiful instruction. have shown, it is not the spices that must produce the profits in the Indies; that articles of trade find so much vent in Europe that their sale in the Indies is often entangled with real damage, as happens when the selling prices there are not kept in a certain proportion to what the same yield in Europe, since then not only is the Company deprived of the greater profits which it can obtain upon the sale of spices in Europe, but other nations thereby obtain the opportunity to buy up those wares in the Indies and to retail them at a profit in Europe, as we have already experienced in this and that sort, and concerning which we shall explain ourselves further under the matter of Batavia. The profits must therefore principally be sought in other merchandise, and this remains apparent and has turned out so well for the ministers here that the respective demands for Europe in the Indies have not only been fulfilled, but also the 6 percent increase on the cotton cloths granted in the previous year has again been bargained down; gives us special pleasure, the more so because we believe that the ministers were attentive not less to the satisfaction of the quality than to that of the quantity of the demanded goods. And since Your Honors judge that the trade of the Company in the Surat linens can be promoted by forbidding private persons to import and sell the same at Batavia, under such conditions as are mentioned in Your Honors' resolution of the 13th of December 1753, we hope that the orders which Your Honors have established for that purpose will have better answered Your expectation. Nothing encourages us more than to be allowed care always recommended, that the purchase and exactness be inspected, and upon finding that necessary measures be devised to indemnify the Company, as was done in the trial that Your Honors saw fit to make of some Surat bleached and unbleached cloths, regarding which we cannot refrain from remarking here that when we saw that Your Honors, in your letter of the 4th of February 1753, had with great emphasis ordered the ministers of this Directorate to purchase there and to send via Ceylon to the Netherlands 69600 pieces of the said cloths, we believed we could, indeed must, conclude therefrom that Your Honors had a more than ordinary certainty that those cloths upon sale in Europe would yield considerable profits, since from your prudence we could not expect that Your Honors would have proceeded to make a purchase of that importance if the same were done only on speculation, as they say, and [illegible] of the expected success would be; but when that also on the Bengal coarse linens not only in we checked the yields of the aforesaid cloths, we were soon aware that we had been very notably mistaken in the supposition made, at least that the outcome of that trial taken had by no means fulfilled Your Honors' purpose, as appeared from those yields, as Your Honors will find upon examination of the same, that many such sent cloths were sold at a loss, and that those which did yield some profits were nevertheless by no means as advantageous as other cloths of a similar sort. We cite this, not because we disapprove of the taking of that trial considered in itself; on the contrary, it is pleasing to us that Your Honors remain constantly mindful of improving the trade of the Company, and new enterprises can sometimes contribute to that. From Surat the 14th of May Year 1757. spoken, subject to the correction of wiser judgment, in which the Company has not traded before, one ought then to limit oneself to a smaller quantity, so that in case of a poor outcome the damage may be of little importance. Regarding the trade that is carried on from here to other places, we shall not explain ourselves any further for the present, as we are resolved to suspend our judgment on the trade in the Indies until we shall have received your considerations and advice on our preliminary replies to the memorandum of Governor General Mossel on the intrinsic state of the East India Company, sent to you with our letter of the 28th of March 1754; aside from the fact that, regarding the trade to Ketsmandui and Bassoura, for lack of the necessary information we are incapable of forming any judgment as to whether and to what extent that trade serves to the benefit of the Company; and furthermore, that the trade of this Directorate to China has ceased entirely. By our General Letter of the 27th of September 1751 we showed our displeasure that in the year 1749 a parcel of Bengal silk had remained lying unsold in this Directorate, which could not have been disposed of elsewhere with profit. The answer of the ministers in their marginal reply is that, with respect to the silk brought there from Bengal, they can say nothing else than that the orders of the High Indian Government were executed in that regard. From Surat the 14th May Anno 1757, and was present in our meeting, in order from there, if necessary, to call at all trading places along the coast and attempt to sell the cargo of that vessel, as well as to head for Surat with the remaining goods and proceed according to their orders regarding this; so we judged on that day best for the service and interest of the Company to persist in this so far as to instruct the servants further to discharge from such vessel only and with all possible speed the merchandise which they, without counting on extraordinarily favorable times and occurrences, estimated they could sell in a round year over and above that which remained there in stock, so far as they maintained on apparent probable grounds that the same would be out of danger there, and no more or further, subsequently sending the ship directly hither without a moment's loss of time, without calling at any trading places, unless they were assured and could demonstrate that the contrary could occur without danger with respect to such predatory peoples as are seated along the Coast of Konkan, and without prejudice to our trade at Danda Rajapur; in which case it went without saying that the order of Your Right Honourables as it stood ought to be complied with under the direction of the provisional second factor Van der Sleijden, as being best spared there, but not in our opinion if, by doing so, one would have to put ship and cargo at risk, or supply our competitors themselves with merchandise so as to enable them to better stand in our way with respect to the Surat trade and accustom the merchants to come to market with them. All this in the supposition that the management of the traffic with that vessel along the coast would be entrusted solely to a servant not present there, as well as appointed in this Directorship, and therefore beyond all doubt subordinated under our authority; but the aforesaid vessel having arrived there together with our cruising boat, of which more will be said hereafter under the chapter of the vessels, besides the ship Straalen destined for Persia, which, after being provided with water and refreshments, continued its journey on the 16th, our commissioners who had departed with it, the skipper and equipment master Ian Warner Falck and an under-merchant Kroonenbergh aforesaid, together with the factors there, presented the aforesaid orders to the supercargoes Walraven and Van Harn, whereupon the former declared that, having a separate instruction, they maintained they were independent of this ministry, and that those orders had no bearing on them, without allowing themselves to be persuaded to a contrary opinion by a representation that, since there were no ports on or along the coast that they could call at with peace of mind because most are in the hands of the Marathas, who had to be regarded as enemies, they ought to steer for Surat the sooner the better, as this and the further arguments used back and forth, together with their positive intention to go to Bombay to the English to trade, may be seen in detail in a resolution drawn up concerning it and the letter from the said Falck and company, both dated the 11th of March, bound among the Levant papers of the Surat trade, to which we take the liberty to refer; the aforesaid Walraven and company, notwithstanding the qualification likewise alleged to act at discretion, having thought fit to remain lying there some days longer until an answer should have arrived from us, meanwhile strongly urging that the aforesaid Kroonenbergh, as the destined second cargo and being highly necessary in the commission, might transfer to it, which the latter did not deem himself authorized to do without our special order, since he found himself in an unforeseen commission of importance from which he was not authorized to withdraw without our prior knowledge. [illegible] Concerning the vessels belonging here, we have in the first place to report that on the 11th of August last, there having been submitted a specification of the expenses incurred for the repair, or rather total renovation, of the narrow-ship Batavia and its rigging, amounting to ƒ16358:18:-, alongside the justification and elucidation demanded in that regard by the first undersigned from our Equipagiemeester Falck concerning some entries that appeared excessive or improper, we, after attentive resumption of the documents incorporated into the resolution of that date, resolved to pass the same subject to the esteemed approval of Your High Nobles, under deduction, however, of ƒ98:19:8 which, for reasons cited in this resolution, was deemed inadmissible to validate, and provided that 97¼ lb of sheet copper from the old galley of that keel and 67½ of sheet lead from the old pipes of the gallery, with the cost, should be entered into the books, to be properly accounted for by the said Equipagiemeester. Furthermore, on the 24th of January last, the amount for the repairs and supplies of and to all the other vessels in Anno 1756 was likewise passed for write-off, amounting to ƒ11922:16:8 or ƒ1001:15:8 more than the previous year, which, as shown by the report incorporated in our Resolution of the 27th of July last, was caused by the greater defects found in some of them, as upon examination of that account we found nothing therein that could justify a contrary disposition. However, regarding the construction of the new decked horrij De Mosselschulp and its boat, a specification amounting to ƒ13088:3:- having been submitted on the 16th of September last, we deemed it proper, before disposing thereof, to have prepared an accurate entry-by-entry comparison with the expenses incurred for the construction of the open horrijs built in Anno 1741, De Lastdrager, D'uijtwinner, and De Broodrot, with two boats, masts, sails, rigging, grapnels, etc., amounting according to the general specification drawn up at that time—wherein the cost of each separately was as little to be seen as anywhere else—to ƒ16333:10:-, alongside that which was spent in Anno 1744 for raising the gunwales and decking of Lastdrager and D'uijtwinner up to ƒ6318:10:8 or 7502 guilders for each with its boat, at which those vessels come to stand in total, if one set for the small horrij De Broodrot alone ƒ4652:- and thus pro rata rather too much than too little; the amount charged for the bare hull of De Mosselschulp and its boat appeared too large to be ascribed solely to the known present higher cost of materials. In our respectful letter of the ultimate of December of the past year, we had the honor to inform Your High Noblenesses of the insults suffered at this roadstead from the Bassijners and how that action ended without bloodshed on our side, but with abundant dead and wounded on theirs. Since then, the latter has been confirmed by unanimous rumors, which estimate the number of their dead at thirty, among whom four Pandets or chiefs, and the wounded at over 60. and secondly, that the vessels as well as the men could well be spared at the time, seeing as both ships lying in the roads had been unloaded and apparently would not be able to obtain a cargo for another full month, as has already been cited previously under the shipping matters together with its cause; that such an expedition, if it succeeded as well as humanly speaking one had reason to flatter oneself, would noticeably increase the credit and prestige of the Dutch, which had somewhat declined in these parts due to a long-continued peaceful conduct, and strengthen the Prince of Dendarajapour in our interests, as well as take away the courage of the Marathas to undertake anything against him or the Company's goods in his country for the present; From Surat, the 14th of May, Anno 1757. shortages, namely on that of Vlissingen ditto sheet copper spelter Japanese copper wire Chinese alum Vijfhoeks beer Dutch vinegar cloves Lapienenburg benzoin native tell tuit 9: 2/8:¾ arrack api 258 vinegar and the oil, the entire quantity, except that the excess amount of the underweight on the spices above 2 percent has been charged to the authorities at purchase cost, which would also have taken place without Your High Noblenesses' latest written orders in that regard, since by the report of the commissioners, confirmed by Captain-Lieutenant van Kervel with his signature, it became apparent that two chests of cloves and 3 chests of nutmegs, of which the gross weight did not tally, but the tare did, were found to be 1/3 and 1/5 empty, and thus the lack of proper supervision was evident; it having also been approved on that day, for the rest, to sell 74 jugs of Vijf Ringen beer brought by Lapienenburg, as being stale, in order to prevent further spoilage, for whatever it may fetch; to debit back eight bundles or 200 quill pens found short in a chest No. 40 brought by that vessel in outwardly good condition, and of which the gross weight tallied, to the Indies capital at the disposal of Your High Noblenesses; as well as 2 spars bolts of Dutch sailcloth, and 15 lb or 30 skeins of sail yarn destined for this directorship, but according to the statement of the ship's officers employed for ship's use, to charge to the authorities at purchase cost pending Your High Noblenesses' esteemed further orders, for reasons which may be seen in our Resolution, as well as those which moved us to send back the second spar, which was found here to be ridden with cracks, rotted, and unfit for any service, with the same ship, charging the cost thereof to Your High Noblenesses' place of residence; to sell by public auction to the highest bidder one piece of scarlet cloth found heavily spotted and more or less damp, alongside 4 pieces of yellow cloth thoroughly damaged by moths, and all five unfit for gifts; as well as that the shortage found by count in the cargo of Vlissingen was charged to the account of the lieutenant of that vessel, Willem van der Zande, alone: on the Japanese bar copper 22:- r:m [illegible] one has thereby had the opportunity to draw up a finding of what was brought by the four ships, which is also incorporated in our Resolution of the ultimate of March, and shows that of some assortments an extraordinary quantity, namely from 10 to 20 percent of whole ones, was found short, without one being able to state positively whether all the pieces found make up the exact number of whole ones, because a large portion was so crushed that it was impossible to piece them together, although pursuant to the Resolution of the 27th of November last, the precaution was taken not to bring the chests that were outwardly in good condition to the scales, and the gross weight of the few that were weighed, and in which no empty space was found, differed so little that this apparently must be attributed solely to the drying out of the wood; wherefore it was deemed that nothing else could be done but to have the reports regarding what was brought by Vlissingen and Lapienenburg sworn under oath, just as had already taken place regarding those of the two other ships, and subsequently to have the shortages of each assortment written off without an amount of money on the same. [illegible] ƒ385216:1 [illegible] and further, in continuation of this subject, we report that we have already been in negotiation with the brokers regarding the sale of the imported merchandise brought by the Vlissingen and the Lapienenburg, have not yet found buyers, not without the prospect of disposing of all the same conditions except for the powder sugar which they balked at, likewise the manufactured goods for which no one has been willing to make a bid until now, but that the news regarding the ruin and plundering of Delhi and Mattura and the conquest of Agra by the Pathans, which has caused such great disturbance around here that the carts which had come down expressly to transport merchandise in demand in the upper regions have departed empty, and the trade in everything that is not consumed and used around Surat has come to a complete standstill, has frightened them off, and made them choose to bide their time a bit to see what turn matters will take, and what consequences this new violent convulsion of the Hindustani Empire will have for commerce, in which they cannot be blamed. From Souratta, the 14th of May, Anno 1757 2302¼ lb cloth rasps, blue Ahmadabad charges for transport to and from deducted herefrom, as appears below of which last-mentioned item no mention was made in our description of last year, due to an erroneous statement of the remaining stock of the Trade Office; wherefore it was deemed proper to send these aromatics, consisting of a quantity of 371/16 lb, on this occasion to Batavia, charging the prime cost, as no other outlet for them is known here, and there is so large a quantity of them in the city that one cannot flatter oneself with the hope of making back the prime purchase cost for a long time to come; however, the gum lac in pieces, which at the auction held in March last already ended at up to a 28 7/8 per cent loss without any enthusiast having come forward then or afterwards, is to be put up for auction once more and, if necessary, allowed to go at or around a 25 per cent loss; but the benzoin Malacca and half of the orpiment have been sent to Rajapour to see whether anyone can be found there who will offer the prime cost or thereabouts, though until now there is no news that any bid has been made for them. [illegible] The Company's brokers, on the ultimate of August last, besides f 3299:18:8 on account of merchandise purchased in that year 1756 but not yet collected, still being in arrears for the Year 1752/5 in the amount of f 241081:—:—, and having at our session of the 11th of that month again requested a postponement for the settlement of the last-mentioned amounts, for diverse reasons inserted by them in the resolution of that date, granting the postponement mentioned in the said petition, we have granted them the same until the ultimate of December, around which time that old debt was liquidated, just as the other was reduced in proportion as they were able to collect the merchandise. Concerning the sales at the office of Ahmedabad in the year 1755/6, the following was sent to us by the employees: True return of such merchandise as was successively sold and turned over during this financial year 1755/6, with indication of the purchase and sale of the same, item the profits made thereon; namely: 1170 lb cloves 145 1/4 lb mace [illegible] 144485 1/4 lb powdered sugar [illegible] f 49873:6:—: 492:8: 065:18:8 17:14: Added up. Regarding the remainders of trade goods as of the end of February 1757, both here and at the subordinate trading posts, we take the liberty of referring to the accompanying list, which has been drawn up according to the model received in Anno 1755, which is attached to our present requisition of trade goods and necessities, in accordance with our deliberations held on the 16th of the past month, which is attached in extract for Your Right Honourables' esteemed elucidation, in the hope that it will become known that the troubles in the upper lands of Hindostan will be of no long duration. 35 to 40,000, that is: thirty-five to forty thousand pounds of cloves, 25 to 30,000, twenty-five to thirty thousand ditto nutmegs, plump, at least few middling and no lean ones, 25,000 pounds of foelie or mace, 10,000, ten thousand pounds of black pepper, provided it is not old stock, ditto, ditto Benzoin, ordinary white, 15,000 ditto, ditto, 20,000 ditto Chinese, 20,000 ditto Achehnese, 300,000, three times one hundred thousand pounds of Japanese bar copper, or more, 50,000, fifty thousand pounds of Japanese plate copper if the bar copper is fully supplied, and otherwise so much more, 50,000 ditto, ditto tin Bangka in ingots or small pigs, 40,000 ditto, ditto black sifted Bantam pepper from the sugar warehouse, 50,000 ditto, ditto canassers of Batavian powder sugar of the Cabessa assortment, and above all no more, the Company's brokers having testified that they cannot guarantee that a single canasser beyond or above the existing remainder in hand can be sold or, what it really comes down to, taken delivery of before October 1758, as Muscat, Sindh, and other places have drawn little or no sugar from Surat this year, 400 canassers of Batavian candy sugar, 25,000 ditto Hungarian copper, 25,000 ditto ditto Nordic refined copper, 30 to 40,000 ditto Swedish coin plates, 5,000 pounds of Dutch quicksilver, as the market has risen so far that there is hope of gaining a half capital advance, 12,000 boxes of fine green tea, but no common sort, 500 pounds of cochineal, 20 to 25,000 pounds of elephant tusks, Arakanese, Cape, Hainan, and Guinea, 1 to 2,000 pounds of tortoiseshell of 4 to 500 pieces, and above all no more to a picul, or else to be excused, three times one hundred thousand pounds of flat iron in bars, if possible let the bars be somewhat thick and 3 inches wide, 10 pounds of clove oil, 5 ditto cinnamon oil, 100 to 150,000 pounds of Ceylon areca, fresh and good, but no Malayan, 25,000 pounds of Javanese dammar, 100 leagers of arrack api, in case the war between England and France continues, and otherwise only fifty. All of which we humbly request may be completely supplied. Apart from this, nothing has been directly requisitioned from any trading posts. In our dispatch regarding the textiles, we gave notice of the resolution taken by us upon the report of the servants at Ketsmandui concerning the bad quality of the textiles collected there upon the requisition of Anno 1755, to have them all accepted at a price proportioned to the quality, which Your Right Honourables were pleased to approve in your esteemed reply. It would have been desirable if that could have been put into effect, but our order or authorization, according to the advices of the servants of the 20th of April 1756, was delivered there too late. In the meantime, the second, Carel Hen, who had gone to Navsari to inspect the textiles, to accept the sound ones or those that conformed to the samples, and to reject the others, returned from there with 55 bales of assorted textiles that were acknowledged by them as deliverable and therefore sent hither, along with 17 bales of rejects which the broker Jaweertjend requested to be sent hither on his account, steadfastly maintaining that it was acceptable merchandise and that he would thus be wronged in the sorting, as well as uninspected cloths that had come off the loom in the final days. All of these cloths were inspected here by specially appointed commissioners, and reported by them, as appears from the report found in our resolution of the 17th of May of last year, that among the accepted as well as the other goods a great multitude of torn and patched-together pieces were found, and furthermore that in some bales pieces were lacking and in others surplus, that most did not fully contain the required length and width, and that the packing slips were not signed nor was the length or width noted thereon. We therefore thought fit to send a copy thereof to the servants, under a provisional reprimand for such extreme sloppiness as shone through in this matter, and further to inspect and resort all these textiles collegially, piece by piece. This was subsequently effected with such outcome as is circumstantially recorded in our resolution of the 4th of June last, when we resolved to have the prime cost of: 424 pieces of assorted Chelasses, 326 pieces of Naginapaats, and 142 pieces of Bajotas, which were partly pieced together from different remnants and further rejected by us as absolutely unacceptable from the parcels accepted as sound for the Company, reimbursed by the factor Willem Blauwkamer and the second Carel Hen for one half, and likewise by the same

Since the aforesaid Carel Hen, in the letter from the employees of the 3rd of July, on the occasion that the factor Blaauwkaamer showed himself to be innocent in the entire matter because he (since the court of Kets will not tolerate that the factor goes in person to Negger) had not even seen the cloths, testified to be fully convinced that no one other than he was responsible on that account, and therefore requested that since he had the means for cash payment, the entire amount of the rejected pieces together with the pieces found short might be placed to his account and he alone be held liable for the compensation of whatever less the deliverable linens might in time yield on account of the defective length and width, acknowledging himself solely guilty of the acceptance; we, in consideration of the evidence that the fault in this matter notoriously and entirely resided with the mentioned second, have altered our aforesaid resolution to the extent that we have debited him on account for the entire amount of the rejected and deficient linens, or ƒ8006:5:-, and have declared the aforesaid Blauwkamer, as far as depends on us, acquitted of all further accountability regarding that matter with its consequences and attachments, the rejected cloths from the lot of the Company having been sold at the request of Hen at public auction for ƒ4884:5, for which he has been credited on account, and those from the lot of the broker, after he had settled his account in the manner aforesaid, have been delivered to his correspondent here. Under the aforesaid session of the 14th of May, it was also approved to refrain for the present from all contracting of linens in Kets and Nauwer Negger, because it is better for the Company not to come to market at all than with such bad goods, and there was no reason for the present to expect any improvement, for reasons discussed at length in our resolution of that date. And despite the continuous vexations to which the merchant is directly subject, both in the transport of goods and otherwise, and those of the weavers and spinners, who consequently demand higher pay, against which, because of the diverse governments that do not depend on one another, there is no remedy, one has finally, as shown by our resolution of the 17th of May last, succeeded so far that both at this main office and at Amed-abaad and Brootchia contracts were made at the prices of the previous year, with the sole exception of the naginapaats according to sample number 15, which the suppliers testified they could not manufacture at the former prices with red or so-called brown checks, as demanded in the Patria requisition for Anno 1756, because the brown-red dye was much more expensive than the blue and yellow; and which, as shown by the resolution of the 27th of July following, could therefore be contracted for no less than ƒ 165:15:- the corgie, being nearly 5¼ per cent more expensive than the ordinary kind. Because of this difference in cost, which might perhaps not have been anticipated in the Netherlands, we thought it would best agree with the intention of the Noble, Highly Esteemed Gentlemen Majores to have only 2000 pieces, or half, manufactured according to the new sample, and the remainder according to the old sample. Naginapaats with small checks, as have been negotiated by the English, and which are to be obtained for no less than ƒ162: the 20 pieces or ƒ 4: 10:- the corgie more expensive than the ordinary according to sample number 115, of which one pack marked number 176 has been sent with the ship Ruijteveld to Ceylon, and the other is to follow at the first opportunity. To facilitate the fulfillment of the requisitions for cotton patolas, it was necessary to decide at the session of the 28th of January of this year to permit the suppliers to have the same dyed this time with Surat ruinax roots instead of Persian ones, which were practically unobtainable here for any money, provided that they should be as high in color as a sample dyed with Surat ruinax roots that was inspected by us in Council and found to be such that one could see no difference between it and a piece dyed with Persian, and otherwise they would be rejected, as has already, to our regret, had to be done with a large quantity, especially of those of 6:5: and 4 cobidos on account of their paleness. 55.

From Souratta the 14th of May Anno 1757 From Souratta the 14th of May Anno 1757 [illegible] and further established orders Concerning the collection at Brootchia, this year to our regret neither the quantity nor the quality can be praised at all. The former is attributed, among other things, to the rejection of large quantities of various assortments, and yet upon inspecting the returns gathered there, we found far more evidence of too lax rather than too strict a sorting, as can be seen in detail in our resolutions of 20th April, 4th June, 16th December, 23rd February, and 30th March last, the particulars of which we shall not enumerate here to avoid a tedious [illegible] from that prosperity, but content ourselves merely with saying that we could not dispense with discounting by 5 per cent the cost of the coarse Corroots, Tjokria, and long Niquanias for the fatherland in December, the so-called fine Niquanias for the fatherland and the coarse for Cabo de Goede Hoop, and the full black Bafftas for that government received in February, and leaving the same to the accountability of the factors Lodewijk Andries van Jeger and Christiaan Heijdeman, subject to their recourse on the broker, and further sentencing them, for the acceptance of those goods, to a fine of one month’s salary for the benefit of the Batavia Diaconate poor, and ordering that henceforth one of them should always accompany the returns, to attend their examination in person and be convinced that it is done impartially; against which deduction of prices the broker requested that favorable consideration be given to the fact that, notwithstanding the excessive dearness of cotton in anno 1756, he had indeed accepted all the linens at the previous year's prices, but not until he had found that through all his representations in that regard to the first undersigned he could obtain not the least increase, but had to choose between seeing the entire contracting given to the Sourat suppliers, or suffering a loss instead of a profit for a year on the delivery, which were of no effect, which we cannot deny, but did not consider of such weight as to make on that account any alteration to our aforementioned decision, whereby he has by no means been wronged; but upon the request made by the factors to be excused from the continual back-and-forth travel imposed upon them, as it cannot be done without expense, declaring that our notes were sufficient proof for them regarding the state of the returns, we have exempted them therefrom as long as they do not feel aggrieved by our remarks and decisions. Fortunately, this year the factory of Amedabaad was tasked only with providing the demanded 56 packs of karikams and 51 packs of flag cloth, or 107 packs in total, of which the employees expected to have ready toward the middle of this month the packs or slightly more, how far that succeeded; yet the dispatch in all likelihood will not be able to take place without the payment of double toll, since both the Governor and the Marhattas claim that it must be paid to them, and we judge the Company's goods there to be in such great danger as long as the siege lasts, that we think one would do poorly not to get past that if one can thereby secure a free passage for the caffila, while for the insurance of the same fully 7½ per cent is demanded both here and at Amedabaad, and that by insurers for whose security one cannot vouch in the least; wherefore, to the question of the employees whether they should contract the insurance on that footing or dispatch without insurance and along which route, namely via Cambaut, Brootchia, or otherwise, accompanied by a communication that the brokers undertook to deliver the remaining 27 packs at the same cost as the previous ones at Souratta by the last day of May at the latest, we replied that we qualified them to dispatch the goods along the route that they, in the present state of time and affairs, should judge best and safest from the discretion of the Governor, trusting that His Honor would by no means demand of us to let the caffila take the route of Cambait, as we otherwise had to promise in order to bring the negotiations concerning the plundered goods at Jamboeser to success, if the returns would thereby be exposed to greater danger, and that however exorbitant the insurance was, we [illegible] and the insurance having been noted, in this critical juncture it would not be otherwise, if one could fully rely on the solvency of the insurers and the certainty of being completely indemnified by them in case of robbery or plundering, but otherwise cannot see that the insurance would serve any purpose other than burdening the Company, upon a successful delivery, with that much more expense, and that it therefore admitted no doubt that one should follow the example of the Armenian and native merchants, who know very well what their essential interest requires and entails, by dispatching the same uninsured, with the Marhatta army [illegible] agreeing to the validity of the passports [illegible] and sealed, to facilitate which they were also authorized to offer General Damagie and his two primary chief officers a sight gift together with a small present of spices, all of which measures we hope will meet with Your Right Honorable's esteemed approval.
